This handbook is set up intuitively so you can look medications up like you would a word in a dictionary. Explanations are very concise, although it took me a little while to understand all the clinical abbreviations.

I purchased this book because it's a standard reference book for us dietitians. Even so, my family and friends also use this book to research their current prescription medications. The information is easy to follow, even if you're not a healthcare professional. The back of the book contains additional handy reference pages, such as the normal ranges for many blood tests and common causes for out-of-range test results; dietary sources of vitamins, minerals, oxalates, and phytic acid (especially important for people with certain chronic illnesses to know); and a list of meds that are affected by grapefruit. I feel this book can be very helpful for people who need to cope with chronic illness(es) that require dietary adjustments and/or multiple prescription medications.

This book was required for a nutrition class, and it's quite a wonderful resource. Everything is neatly labeled and in order, making it easy to find the medication and all interactions/warnings. A great resource for anyone who wants to understand more about the meds they are taking, or for those who care for them!

Awesome Pocket Book Guide - Great for those in Dietetics
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-13
I'm currently a Dietetic Intern. This book has been, and still is, a useful pocket book guide that I use everyday for my internship. The book has almost all the medications that I currently deal with in my clinical rotation. The type of information that this book gives are as follows:

1. Alternative Name(s)
2. The drug's affect
3. Diet (with our without food), what foods to avoid with the med (ie. grapefruit)
4. Oral/GI affects
5. S/Conds
6. Affects on Pregnancy
7. Blood/Serum affects
8. Urinary affects
9. What to monitor
10. Ways to be adminstered (the drug)
11. and more

Additionally, the book provides (what I find to be very useful) are Lab Values, their normal ranges, and reasons why they might be elevated or below normal limits.

There is more within this pocket guide.

The only thing I don't like is that it says "Pocket Guide"; it's not really that small, it's quite big. Don't expect it to fit in your pant pocket. It will fit in your lab coat pocket, but it's quite still big. I suggest to carry it with your binder. Just don't misplace it; I've done it many times already on the different hospital floors.

I highly recommend this food and drug medication guide -- especially those in the dietetics profession.

I also submitted a poem for this (my first) and am also on the first page of my copy of the book. It does make me feel good and I'm impressed that the publisher would go to the trouble of doing that for everyone who submitted. I'm curious though, did everyone else receive an "Editor's choice award", as well as a "Poem of the Year" award with their submissions?

Overall, this book contains many great poems from people all over the world. I thought that the quality of many of the poems were better than many of those who have entire books published with their work. Naturally there are some that are not that great, but overall, if you like poetry this is a nice addition to your collectionl

Proud to be one of the poets who contributed to this anthology. My poem Two Girls was the first thing I ever tried to get published. I wonder if I just got lucky. I wrote it in a way, you can't read it fast or it may sound confusing or incorrect. I'm a lover of language, and phrasing things in ways people aren't used to hearing them phrased. Never thought it would even get in the book, bringing up homosexuality and all. It even looks atheist if read the wrong way, and without thinking about it what it really means. That... was the sign I needed to keep going with writing. There are so, so many different kinds of poems in this book. Going through this for the first time, I kept ripping off parts of a tissue and sticking them in the pages, cause I didn't have a bookmark, so I could come back to the poems... well I ran out of tissue, so there are a lot of great poems in there! What I like about it is that I'm in the same book with people who have contrasting, or slightly different views/beleifs. (obvious by the poems) Diversity is a good thing in an anthology. I can recal a *hilarious* poem, and a poem that makes you want to just curl up and cry in a corner for days... in a good way. Theres poems that make you want to praise and celebrate, and there are poems that make you really need to think. I couldn't dream of a better anthology that I would want my first published thing in. I didn't even think I'd get in this one. You never know.

Anyhow this would make a great holiday gift for any lover of modern poetry. There's a poem in this book for anything you can imagine. It's just a beautiful display of self-expression, wisdom, rhythem, and pure emotion. Definately add this to the collection.

Yes, I am also on the first page of the copy I bought. I had a feeling that each poem and poet got their copy with the first page belonging to them. My friends did not think the publishers would go to that trouble. Interesting. The book over all is very good in my opinion. I have enjoyed the other peoms and it seems to be well bound. My poem in this book is "SHARING" by Robin Williamson. Has anyone been published in more than one? Do only the people that buy a book get published? Would recommend "Forever Spoken" to all who enjy poetry. "Thank You" remember, frredom of speach is so important.

I watch Dr. Becker's program "Your Health" on World Harvest TV, (on my computer as can't get it off air any more.)

This book is the compilation of his years as a holistic doctor as well as M.D. who used what he has put in his book to help others help themselves get well. (He himself used what he wrote to aid in his own overcoming cancer). I firmly believe we are not only what we eat and drink, but what we don't. This book will help you, like it did me, discover which is which.

I recommend it with my whole heart.

FREEDOM'S JUST ANOTHER WORD is a riveting memoir, chronicling the Author's journey toward discovery, self-discovery, an honest faith and ultimately freedom - through confronting the fear and pain in the truth of an abusive past. His courage and determination led him to find healing and the ability to forgive and move forward to reclaim his life.

A must read for anyone who suspects he/she may need to embark on such a journey, anyone who has done so, or anyone who knows someone already on that journey. You will find hope and encouragement to stay the course to the end, which is Freedom.

An extraordinary journey of a man confronting what most of us (children of alcoholics and/or violent parents) are afraid to confront. I would recommend this book to everyone, no matter what their upbringing was/is. An insight into what really goes on behind closed doors. Hats off to Dan for brilliantly bringing this to publication. I can't wait for the next one in the series!!!

In his remarkable work, "Freedom's Just Another Word" Dan takes the reader back in time to meet a sweet 17 year old boy on the brink on manhood. His rite of passage is negated by a drunk father caught up in his own battle with daemons.

Dan's strong spirit and deep love brings him through to adulthood where he solves the puzzles that have plagued him. Even though friends and family love and support him, Dan craves the nurturing love of his emotionally absent father. His self worth diminished, Dan sinks down to the bottom of a complex pit.
Recognizing his own pain, he is able to identify it in others. He forgives those who cheated him, and in doing, releases years of suppressed and unresolved anguish.

Dan starts out in this memoir as a loving boy called Danny who endures much emotional and bodily pain. He takes us with him on his journey as he eventually becomes whole again residing within the strong spirit of a man. I couldn't put it down.
This is a journey of great courage; a must read for everyone.

The words of Janis Joplin never rang more true. "Freedom's Just Another Word" is a story about hitting rock bottom. Dan L. Hayes lost his father, his job, couldn't find another and things looked like they couldn't get any worse. He had nothing left to lose, and he tells his journey, one which is both emotional and spiritual about his rise back up to something that most people would call a life. "Freedom's Just Another Word" is a riveting read, sure to give readers something to ponder.

This book is a lifesaver sometimes. It's enabled me to avoid cranky kid meltdowns in public places several times over. I keep it in the glove box of the car so we have it on hand for waiting in line, dr. office visits, waiting at restaraunts, airplane trips, etc. Anytime kids are antsy and complaining about waiting somewhere- pull out this little gem and get them busy with a distraction. Review Date: 2007-11-05
Coming in at a small size of 4-inches wide, 6-inches tall and about an inch thick... this book is worth quantum times more than its size. It should be delivered by your family's stork on your kids' third birthdays! It's a must have for every diaper bag! It's even as critical in your minivan as gasoline!

The opening line is a quote from Cesare Pavese, "We do not remember days... we remember moments." And, this book is meant to create a lifetime of childhood memories in those everyday life events where we all have a few moments to spare (many of which you don't realize you have!): waiting for food in restaurant, waiting in line at grocery store, waiting in a waiting room, long drives, short drives, even when mom and dad are just plain ol' busy, etc.

Here's some examples that I'm gonna randomly open the book and include:

Once the waiter takes your drink order, choose one family member as a guesser. The rest pass a penny from person to person underneath the table until the drinks arive. Once they do, everyone puts their closed hands on the table. The guesser then must guess who holds the penny. It's not rocket science. It's quick. It's fun. And, it beats watching the kids try to color on the back of the menu with the lousy yellow restaurant crayon that breaks into 50 small pieces!

Waiting forever for the doctor to arrive? Have your child draw their body double on the crinkly white paper that covers the examination table. Color in eyes, nose, clothing, where it hurts, etc. This makes the time go faster and distracts the discomfort your little one might be having that brought them to the doctor in the first place.

Got a drive the kid's aren't looking forward to? Have one come up with a secret category in their head (billboards, blue pickup trucks, cars with something on their roof). Each time you pass it on your drive, your child counts out loud the number of times they see their category item. Everyone else must guess the category. The correct guesser goes next.

The book's even loaded with cool little tips. Got kids who can't sit still? Keep them in the car as you drive through the drive-through. Once you get your food, unload them. Go inside and eat immediately from the sack vs. the tray!

Buy the book to get the other 321 great ideas. It's cheaper than one hour's worth of babysitting! And, your kids will remember these moments with you forever!!!

Allegorical Apples

Review Date: 2008-01-30
Dead mothers are always a good plot device. There is nothing like the absence of a mother to create a suitable amount of angst, heartache, uncertainty, and self-doubt. Think of the Alice books by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, where the first couple of books in the series are driven by the fact that pre-teen Alice is growing up without a mother, surrounded by men in her family, and suffers the nagging fear that she is not approaching the formative years of her life with due female influence. And more recently we have had the mother-less Bee from Being Bee, and Jack from The Night Tourist. Now there is Evie Adler in K.L. Going's The Garden of Eve. Her mother is ten months dead from cancer, and Evie is left with her botanist father who has never appreciated--or even understood--magic the way her mother did. He is too much of a scientist to put much stock in fairy tales, or stories in general. When he takes on the job of trying to revive a dead apple orchard in Beaumont, New York, far from their Michigan home, Evie is resentful. They move into a house right next door to a cemetery--but the only cemetery Evie cares about is the one back in Michigan, where her mother is buried. Her father devotes his time to the orchard--but all Evie can think of is the magic garden she used to plan with her mother, a perfect garden with magnificent trees and noble beasts where the three of them would always be together. When Evie is given a seed supposedly from the Garden of Eden, Evie thinks she has her chance to find that perfect garden, and consequently find her mother, too.

There is a lot going on in this book, some of it allegorical and some of it just old fashioned mystery. There is the boy Alex, whom Evie meets hanging around in the cemetery. Is he really dead, as he claims to be? Is the orchard where Evie's father toils really cursed, or has it simply been abandoned? When Evie plants her seed and enters the magical garden--by way of eating an apple, of course!--is she in Eden or is it a trap? There is another Eve who grew up in Beaumont and disappeared many, many years ago. What happened to her? And will Evie find peace after the death of her mother?

Some of the pieces in the book are tied together a little bit too neatly, but for the most part this is an engaging and thoughtful book. Evie is disillusioned without being broken. The father is pragmatically devoted to his work but all open-hearted and open-minded business when Evie needs him most. The supporting characters range from saintly (the dead mother)to utterly convincing (Alex). Readers who like their books with magic and symbolism will enjoy this.

Since her free-spirited mother Tally's passing, Evie has given up her belief in magic and nearly all the activities she had loved to partake in with her mom, like painting and reading bedtime stories. Then another difficult change occurs when her father decides to move them from their home in Michigan to Beaumont, New York. Evie doesn't want to relocate or forget about the memories of the life she once had with her mother nearly a year before. However, her father is anxious for a fresh start.

When Evie and her father arrive in rural Beaumont, Evie can't help but feel a little uneasy about the atmosphere of the place, with its blackened, gnarled trees and seemingly perpetual quiet. Then, when picking up the keys from Maggie, the sister of previous owner Rodney, they learn that many people believe that the town is cursed because of the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Maggie and Rodney's sibling, Eve, and the fact that the once-vibrant orchard's appearance changed shortly after.

Evie's father (a "realist," as he refers to himself) dismisses the story as superstition and thinks that, with his skills, he could help bring the trees and, in effect, the town back to life. Meanwhile, to Evie's dismay, she discovers that their new home is near a cemetery, which is where she meets a boy named Alex, who claims to be a ghost. Despite her initial skepticism, Evie can't help but be intrigued by him and his determination not to be forgotten. Then for her 11th birthday, she receives an unusual gift left behind by Rodney. Along with the story behind the supposed curse and a little help, Evie begins to piece the clues together that may put the past to rest, while revealing some surprises about herself and those she cares about.

On the surface, THE GARDEN OF EVE may appear to be just a whimsical mystery, but underneath is a poignant story about keeping a hold of family, hopes and dreams, even if they don't always seem to be in reach.

Evie grieves for her sensitive and imaginative mother, angry that her practical father has taken her far from home to a lonely house by a cemetery. As her father tends to a blackened orchard, Evie befriends a dead boy and an elderly woman who gives her an ancient seed that brings the children to an alternate world. Evie dreams of finding her mother there, but instead discovers the love of her father.

Chapters flow from one to another with suspense that should not frighten the "average" child. My fifth grade daughter and I read this aloud and thoroughly enjoyed the fresh, natural dialogue between Evie and the strange boy, the mysterious magical happenings and the realistic relationship troubles between father and daughter. This might be a good book to read to upper elementary or middle school children dealing with the loss of a parent, or even a sibling as the boy grieves the loss of his brother, but might be disconcerting to some younger children.

The storyline is creative and although the last chapter does wrap up a little too well, we are glad that Evie finds a final, surprising connection to her mother.

Gertrude and the Printed Page is an intriguing novel, incorporating equal measures of mystery, governmental takeovers, political espionage, interpersonal relationships -- and a large dose of morality. The author takes a peek into another lifetime and introduces us to a world where civil liberties and basic human rights are in jeopardy.

As a writer, Mr. Alpert reveals a genuine passion for books and freedom of the press and, with this story, truly pays homage to the printed page. Well-conceived and imaginative plot, with warm, likable, effective characters ... a valuable tale to read for anyone who doubts the importance of freedom and the integrity of the written word.

My co-author and I recently traveled to Sugerloaf, N.Y. for a leisurely day of shopping in the quaint little craft shops the town is known for. While we were there, we passed a table where a delightful gentleman sat, peddling his wares. It was, of course Stanley Albert, and we shared many thoughts about writing and publishing, as well as life itself. To make a long story short, My co-author bought "Gertrude and the printed page" from Stanley, and as we drove home, I began reading the story out loud as she drove. Comprised of short chapters, the book was easy reading. There were not a lot of detailed descriptions to get bogged down in. Just a simple, free-flowing tale of the last bastion of printed word in a country that resembles the USA. Laced with mystery and dialogue that is both simple yet realistic, Stanley weaves a tale of intrigue and disturbing social situations that culminate in an exciting, very satisfying ending. The perfect book to read at night before retiring, Gertrude and the Printed Page is a must read. Stanley states that he has two goals. "To contribute to humankind through writing about controversial and ethical challenges, and to write 100 books by his 100th birthday. We wish Stanley a long and colorful life, and concede that he has already achieved one of his goals.

Stan Alpert, a master of creative fiction, writes this innovative novel on the subject of the first ammendment. This book foretells life without books, through depiction of a nation in which books are banned. Most interesting is that Mr. Alpert crafted this tale long before the internet became an integral and paperles part of our lives. An intriquing novel well worth reading.

I read this interesting book about the first amendment. I think the book makes a veryimportant statement about censorship and where censorship can take us. I was impressed with the fact that the book gives no time in which it takes place. It only speaks of a small window of time and one can use their imagination as to how the world got to that place. Censorship and burning of books is not unheard of. Hitler did it and look where it lead. How grim the world would be without the colorful words of the printed page. No one has the right to censor. No president, no mayor - as it does terrible harm. Thank you Mr. Alpert for telling me about Gertrude and making me realize how lucky we are to have freedom of the press.

This is a great book for the very young who are just starting to read. The text has repetitive elements which makes it great for a child's sense of accomplishment. They continue to learn new words in each new spread, while also repeating some of the words that they have just learned in the previous spread! The text is fun to say out loud, too. The text describes the illustrations well, and the illustrations always have a little something extra to share about the story in them. You can find new little details in the artwork with each reading. Last but not least, the artwork is absolutely adorable - the illustrations are very funny, sweet and cute!! These characters are full of expression and charm. You can't help but enjoy this book - it will see a lot of repeated use with children who are just learning to read!!

So cute!

A very cute book, beautifully illustrated. The author has a great sense of style and her illustrations are lush, but simple (sounds like quite a contradiction!).

"Ghost Eats It All!," by Janee Trasler, is a great example of pure Halloween fun. Aimed at the toddler set, "Ghost Eats It All!," features a greedy ghost and a quiet, resentful, hungry Frankenstein.

Ghost eats ice cream, an egg, an apple, pizza, candy, and cake in front of Frankenstein. Frankenstein becomes more and more hungry and more and more angry at Ghost's insensitivity, so he finally takes action, scaring Ghost away.

It's a simple tale, but toddlers will love looking at Frankenstein's facial expressions as he becomes increasingly upset by Ghost's selfish consumption of all the sweets. Perfect read-aloud fun for the 1-5 year-old crowd. Happy Halloween!

Intended for the very young, this book can be made enjoyable for the entire family by reading it aloud.
It's simple, cute but funny while delivering the message to share your food with your friends or else there could be consequences!

My son is 18 months old and loves books, so I picked this up for him at work.
It immediately became his favorite book. :)
The illustrations are adorable (I love poor ghost stuck outside the window) and the story is the perfect length for squirmy toddlers.
He looks at it by himself and yells "BOO!" when he gets to the page where monster scares ghost into sharing.
Cutest. Thing. Ever.

It's a history book and a cookbook all in one. The biggest selling point for me is the accuracy of the recipes. Can you believe it contains a mincemeat recipe that actually contains meat! That's a rare gem these days. If you love food history as much as you do a good dish you will want to own this book.

As someone who loves to cook and is fascinated by early american history, I was extremely pleased by the content of this book. It is not merely a cookbook but a history book as well. This book can be enjoyed by children and adults equally.

Wonderful! Curtin and Oliver put together a unique collection of exquisite and easy to follow recipes. The history behind the national holiday is also explained with interesting details and complements nicely the culinary section. Whether the reader wants to learn more about the tradition or wants to impress friends and family at the dinner table, this is the book to read!
Giving Thanks. A book to have and a book to give!

This is a fun book. The book has great trivia and history, and a great variety of the old traditional recipes. But along with that, are the recipes created by the different cultures of our "Melting Pot", who adapted their own wonderful tastes and flavors to their Thanksgiving celebration. This year, my family is going use only recipes in this cookbook to make a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.

I read the Crosswick Journal series before being buying this treasure as a Christmas gift to myself a few years ago. I was already a fan of Ms L'Engle. However, this book brought her into a new realm. I followed the readings quite faithfully during two yearly cycles. I must say that they provided my those glimpses of grace that were needed during that very difficult time of my life. These are only glimpses because they are relatively short and easy to digest over breakfast. However, as so often happens, glimpses open doors that reveal so much more. My faith in the God of Creation was reaffirmed through this book. This God accepted me as I was (and am) and affirmed me as good. What more can one ask from a book of daily reflections?

Thank you Ms L'Engle. I'm proud to call you a fellow Episcopalian!

Glimpses? Oh, so much more!

L'Engle does something here that few devotional authors dare. She not only supplies answers and inspirations, she poses questions. Questions without easy answers. Questions that penetrate to the heart of true faith in God.

Does she qualify as a mystic? Yes, in that she moves outside the world of pure rationalism.

Is she a Christian? Yes, in the sense that she believes upon Jesus Christ as the savior and as the only begotten Son of God.

Is she an agnostic? Yes, by her own definition. She says that by confessing agnosticism, she is only confessing that she doesn't know everything. She refuses to lie or pretend otherwise. Yet, in the midst of not knowing, she still believes in the God that created the universe.

This devotional breathes life into a sometimes stale genre. L'Engle's openness might challenge, even offend, some. But for those on the limits of faith, those hanging in amidst life's tragedies and unexpected miracles, "Glimpses of Grace" gives a little more grace to move on. This is classic and poignant writing. One closes the pages filled with a greater awe and greater mystery regarding the love of God.

Since Christmas of 1995 my wife and I have used these fabulously interesting readings from GLIMPSES Of GRACE to buffet us from the storms of everyday life! As one quite perceptive reviewer speaks of her as a Mystic and Yes, she asks good questions. Her readings relate to the living of all life in the face of Belief and Doubt.

One reading from May 20th she is doing an afterschool seminar for high school students and is asked by a brilliant young lady from Harlem, earlier from Panama: "Mrs Franklin, do you really truly believe in God with no doubts at all?"

"Oh, Una, I really and truly believe in God with all kinds of doubts... But I base my life on this belief." Another topic that often arises in her readings is that of Death and Eternity. After one student is saying that it seems lately "there's death everywhere..." Another answers, "Is the price too high? Are you afraid?" These lead to the titles of "We Die Many Deaths and A Metaphor for the Afterlife." Her simple yet clear approach seems to come down from the power found in Creation... that Life is a Gift and where there's Life there's Hope!

This is truly one lovely, consistently inspiring devotional book by an awesome fearless lady! Sincerely retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

Madeleine L'Engle has written many wonderful books for both adults and children. Her work is very provocative and most thoughtful. You glean something more every time they are read... GLIMPSES OF GRACE takes the best passages from her books and reveals more contemplative insights. This Daily Thoughts and Reflections is cross-referenced by topic and title. GLIMPSES OF GRACE can be appreciated by Madeleine's fans as well as someone who is not familiar with her work. I keep an extra copy on hand as I have often given this book as a gift. Highly recommended!
