Fresh perspective for all

Interesting book! The whole concept of addressing inheritance from a non-monetary perspective is fresh (in a book). The book's attempted development about a process may be especially good for a dysfunctional family, but it also brings focus on the good habits and traditions of the functional family, even when no money is involved. Whatever the personal relationship to the described stories, every reading "family" can benefit from a personal exploration through the questions raised.

This book is very helpful. I would not just suggest this for parents, but children who know that down the road, they will receive an inheritance or come into wealth. It gives examples of the pitfalls that can come if you are not prepared for this life changing event. It is fun to read, and well thought out. Great planing book.

Have you read everything there is to read on parenting? Have you become bored with the same old books on how to raise your children? Then it's time you read "Beating the Midas Curse". This insightful collection of stories, ideas and introduction to "The Heritage Process" will enlighten and delight those parents interested in their family's future generations. Being lovingly known and understood by those critically important to you during your life AND after. Leaving your indelible influence with those with whom you have shared soul-touching experiences. Immersing yourself in the thrill of genuine mutual respect with your immediate and extended families. Being forever remembered by your lineage for who you were and for what you stood. If these statements are a big part of who you are or who you want to be, then reading BEATING THE MIDAS CURSE is a must.

This book's six-step experience, called The Heritage Process, is your path to significance. However, your experience must be guided by someone trained by the authors' forward-thinking organization, The Heritage Institute. Why? Because this is a what-it-is book, not a how-to. Many months, even years, of on-going training by your leader are required for you to successfully arrive at your life-changing destination. If you identify with the person described above, your life, too, can arrive at the SIGNIFICANCE you want . . . and need.

As an avid reader of hundreds of books on wealth transfer planning, I rate this book as one of the very best. As an estate planning attorney and wealth counselor, I understand that a family must pass on its values before it passes on the value of what it owns. Beating the Midas Curse shows how to crystallize family values into a compelling vision supported with engaging family stores that heirs can share and reflect upon as they make decisions to leave the most meaningful legacy.

An excellent account of life growing up and practicing law as the first black lawyer at Ground Zero of the voting rights movement. The book provides interesting insights into life in the South both before and after the cataclysmic events of the 1960's in Alabama. It also provides a unique perspective on the development of a law practice in a hostile environment.

This is a wonderful book detailing the experiences of an individual that contributed to the transformation of our nation during the civil rights era. It is a must read by anyone interested in U.S. history, history of the south or just what it's like growing up in a small Southern town. A great book and I recommend it to anyone regardless of age or race.

Black in Selma is an extraordinary book and gives the reader a superb mental depiction of Selma and times of the 1940s to present day. I read it from cover to cover in one day; I simply couldn't put it down. The racism that African-Americans endured is incredible!

Great information about political strategy behind the civil rights movement and historical details that you won't read anywhere else. As an activist and organizer, I learned a lot from this book.

The book shows the sheer guts it took to do these things when the outcome of the civil rights movement was not at all certain. I also appreciated the way the book remembered important and courageous people, some of whom risked their lives, and who might otherwise be lost to history. I hope Mr. Chestnut writes another book.

Being 13, I'm pretty picky, but this book was awsome! It's so in my shopping cart! I love how the Clocks are so smart, they can make everything out of anything! This book really appeased me, because I love models and mineature things, an the thought of moving, living, mineature people is so thrilling! I really liked how they made a hot-air balloon out of a strawberry basket, a fountain pen, and a plastic (or toy, as it says in the book) balloon. Soooo coool! I'm SO reading the other books (I've already read the book and seen the movie "The Borrowers").

A Timelessly Appealing Fantasy, Part 4

The Borrowers Aloft is Mary Norton's fourth installment in this captivating series about small people who lead hidden lives borrowing from "human beans". Pod, Homily, and Arrietty Clock are now living in the miniature village of Little Fordham, built in the back garden of a retired railroadman and maintained by the eccentric but very kind Miss Menzies. Once again Arrietty, who is now sixteen and learning more and more about the world, becomes a bridge between the worlds of borrowers and human beans. Unfortunately, another human couple with a rival miniature village have spotted the borrowers, and one night they kidnap the Clock family and hide them away with plans to put them on permanent display as prisoners.

Mary Norton's powers of description and her ability to imagine the ingenious methods the borrowers use to survive and eventually escape their predicament are as enchanting as ever. Although the world of the human beans impinges a bit too long on this story, so that it seems to take forever to actually find out what the borrowers themselves are up to, this is another fine story. It was apparently written with the intent to make it the last in the series, but fortunately a fifth installment eventually arrived.

Dr. James Thogtam: A classic book for those in the field

WITH THE SEVENTH EDITION OF BRAUNwald's Heart Disease, the editors have accomplished an impressive feat: improving on an already classic text. With 36 new chapters and full-color figures and photographs, the new edition is substantially altered in both content and appearance. Compared with the rather limited color-plate photographs in the sixth edition, the color photographs, figures, and tables in each chapter significantly enhance the new text.

Informative chapters on the foundations of cardiovascular medicine remain, including detailed discussions of history taking, physical examination, and electrocardiography, topics often overshadowed in an era of rapidly progressive medical technology.....

The seventh edition of Braunwald's Heart Disease would be a worthy addition to the medical library of any practicing cardiologist, cardiology fellow, or health care practitioner with a special interest in heart disease.

A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ALL SEASONS

I met Victoria live one night while surfing the internet. I am a single parent father. I have had great difficulty in my life and have battled many problems over the years.

She sent me a note without even knowing me or what I was going through and called all my emotions right on line.

Over the past year she has supported me through wonderful notes of inspiration, motivation and prayer. She has given me the boost that I needed on those very dark days to pull myself out of the barrel...lol.

It took me a couple of times to get through her story because it's so powerfully emotional. The tape came into my life at just the right time. It gave me a different perspective on my life and my problems.

Victoria is a wonderful lady who is full of compassion, understanding and unconditional love. She is like sitting down with a dear friend.

PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO GET THIS AWESOME LIFE CHANGING TAPE.

My love and thanks to Victoria, Alan

The power of this audio drama with all the sound effects is something I have never experienced before. WOW! What a display and what a story.

It took me about 4 times to get through the story as I was so overcome. I have since played it over and over again. I have found that when I feel a little down I can pop it into my tape player and I'm back on track hummming a song and being grateful for the life I had as a child and now as an adult.

My prayers are with you Victoria and thank you for stepping out and sharing this awesome story with the world.

I am a member of Charles Stanleys Church in Atlanta Georgia and I have shared it with some people who totally agree that it is truly an anointed testimony of someone who was touched by God and His messengers. I say messengers because I believe all through-out your life God has sent heavenly messengers and earthly encounters to bring you to where you must be today.

Love and blessings, Sue

I am speechless! What a story! An amazing story that is one of the most incredible and believable Angel Stories I have ever heard.

Over the years I have read many angel authors books, but I have never read one such as this one. I was overcome with joy, sadness and a real sense of being with Victoria as the story was told. SHE IS AN AWESOME AUTHOR! The way she tells the story , the words she uses makes you feel the ice hitting you in the face, smell the wildflowers and feel the gut wrenching suffering.

I cried, I laughed and I longed to be where she was as Angels sent by God touched her life.

I sure would love to meet this wonderfully, inspiring lady. I wish you Victoria all the blessings heaven has to offer for I know God will truly pour them down upon you. Your suffering has been for others and you have honestly shown through your story that you understand that.

THIS BOOK IS AN AWESOME TESTIMONY for anyone going through trials, or to give as a gift to uplift, and motivate others. I HIGHLY SUGGEST IT.

DON'T PASS THIS ONE UP.

God Bless you Victoria...your new follower...Catherine

I know Victoria personally and have first hand heard of her experience. When I think of the trials she faced during what should have been the most enjoyable years of her life, it is so painful to know that she endured such horrible tests, instead of the joy and love that should have surrounded her! Yet,God had a hand on her life and a purpose! He had His Heavenly Angels walking with her through each and every trial! Her name Victoria was anointed the day her mother named her as she truly was Victorious through these trials! I doubt few have survived such trials as she has. It is such a blessing to know that God will use us if we are willing. And He surely did use her. Your hearts will be lifted when you read of her struggles and pain as it will surely make your own burdens appear much lighter. Thank you Victoria for sharing your life with us! Many lives will be changed when they hear your testimony presented in this awesome audiobook. I remember the day we listened to it. We cried and laughed as you can honestly feel the Holy Spirit touch your heart as you wait on the edge of your seat to hear what happens next! I love you and I pray that God will use this tool to save many who are depressed and alone walking those same streets today! God Bless you dear sister, Connie Jones

I cannot remember when I have ever been so moved by a story. The way Victoria writes is nothing short of annointed. The power of the Spirit of God pours through this story. I cried, laughed and was so overcome I felt I could not even move.

I cannot wait for her upcoming childrens series for I know parents and children are going to be taken on a "heavenly excursion."

I just hope that if I were going through what she went through I would have the courage to keep going with the faith, hope and joy that she continues to live with today.

May you always find an angel of God at your side.

Best Wishes for a great writing future.

I read "The Children of Green Knowe" a year or so ago, and I just finished this second book this afternoon. I was so completely submerged in the engrossing story and I can't wait until I have time to read all the remaining books in the series. Beautifully written, effortless (for the reader) characterizations, and a mysterious and charming plot that weaves generations of children together as they live and love Green Knowe and all its ages of family. Fantastic. I can have no higher praise for these books that to say that have a kinship with the best of children's fantasy and fiction and they belong on the shelf next to the Narnian Chronicles.

A lovely story, a real classic.

While from a literary perspective, this is no masterpiece, it nonetheless captures a unique portrait of early twentieth-century Italian immigrant life. My great-grandfather, Nicolo, worked with tile in Philadelphia around the same time of the setting in this book. Many of the stories I've heard growing up make more sense now having read di Donato's novel.

The writing is stilted at times (di Donato's attempt to make the English sound Italian), and he allows his characters to go on angst-ridden rants for far too long. But there are numerous gems in this piece. I wholeheartedly recommend it -- to Italian-Americans to learn a little more about their heritage and to all others to catch a glimpse of early Italian immigrant life in America.

I had the privilege of spending an afternoon at the Long Island home of Pietro Di Donato many, many years ago when a friend of mine, John Liscio, took me to visit. Mr. Di Donato's father, I was told, died when he fell into a vat of cement back in the days when there were no labor laws to protect workers. The book was shaped from this incidence. Powerful book, and an even more powerful man. Both left an indelible impression.

This is the finest book I have ever read about Immigrants. As an Italian American it is especially rewarding. If made into a real film (not like the cheesy 1949 version)it could be a masterpiece -- it could be to Scorsese what Schindler's list is to Spielberg.

One note -- wait to read Fred Gardaphe's introduction until after you read the novel as he gives away a lot of the story.

Howard is a master story teller and his Conan series and extended series by Jordan, Lin, and others, are a testiment to Sword & Sorcery. He has few equals in this genre. I have been looking for years for a bound anthology of his early & mid-year Conan works but there are non to be found. Even most of the paper back versions are currently out of print. Possibly the PB's will not produce the revenue needed for a reprint, but I am willing to bet a comprehensive anthology would have a large following and would be a sure thing for the lucky publisher that took a chance on it.

Robert E. Howard's famous barbarian hero journeys among the nations of the Hyborian Age in this anthology of stories, seeking his fortune and reveling in bloody adventure. I devoured several of these anthologies back when I was in junior high school and was pleasantly surprised to see how well they hold up now. His prose is muscular and direct, his characters brutal and equally direct, as befits the world in which they live. I was surprised that Conan is actually a secondary character in some of the original stories, such as "The God in the Bowl," a Sherlockian tale with the Cimmerian as one of the suspects. Although all of the tales written by Howard, either whole or in part, are strong, the pastiches produced by Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp are weak. The lengthy "City of Skulls" is particularly egregious for its careless dependance on wild coincidence--wandering through the darkness of the sewers, Conan and his companion chance upon a secret passage that leads directly to the chamber of an evil king just as he is about to sacrifice the heroine. How sloppy! Howard's "Rogues in the House" is the highlight of this collection.

Valiant Effort

Review Date: 2000-11-27
What we have in this series of books (starting with Conan, and proceding through Conan The Cimmerian, Conan The Wanderer, etc.) is an attempt to put the stories in chronological sequence, filling in the gaps from the late Howard's notes. It's a valiant effort, both respectable and respectful though it's certain that whatever demons possessed Howard and allowed him to write as knowledgably (even "truthfully") about Conan as he did do not possess Carter and de Camp.

It's too easy (and fruitless) to criticize the effort for that. The series gives you a look at Conan as he grows and matures, and presents as cohesive a picture of him as any literary (or even actual) character ever documented. Aspiring fantasists would do well to read this for an idea of how to build a lasting character.

Beyond that, the stories are just plain fun. Violent, of course, with a smattering of non-graphic... (less here than in other books), and lots of good weird stuff. Because these are short stories, you don't get the kind of cliffhangers you get from a "Tarzan" book, but you do get non-stop action from one of the best. And that ain't bad.

Reading Cracking the Corporate Code (CTCC) is like having conversations with the best mentors in the world.. When I first read it, I was in the middle of my fourth year as an associate at a major law firm in Silicon Valley. I was one of very few blacks, and I was struggling through work assignments and feeling so alienated. It was CTCC that gave me the confidence to look honestly at my law firm environment. As an American lawyer in London, I often feel isolated in an alien culture, even though everyone is speaking English. CTCC was given to me by a colleague who knows Judy Turnock. I was surprised to find how much I identified with the experiences of the corporate executives interviewed there. What they shared has given me even more respect for what so many people have sacrificed to make the promise of America a reality. It also made me proud of my small part in the cultural change underway in every workplace. I find myself turning to CTCC again and again. Wherever you work, read this book.

Indispensable Guide for African Americans

A Black business book classic that I recommend reading is Cracking the Corporate Code : The Revealing Success Stories of 32 African American Executives by Price M. Cobbs and Judith L. Turnock. This book delivers truth in a disarmingly no-holds
barred fashion.

The truth about advancement in the corporate world is that the unwritten, unspoken rules and values are often more important then those that are written and spoken. The challenge for African Americans is that the rules were created for and by white men.

This book receives my recommendation for both what the book does and for what it doesn't do.

The first half of the book is tough to swallow as an African American because you hear the stories of young, idealist Black men and women entering the corporate world on the heels of years of Civil Rights unrest and newly minted gains. They are pioneers in business and the business world proves to be as dangerous as the American frontier was to the pioneers that left home to settle here.

These new entrants into corporate America face abuse, back stabbing, hurt, rejection and subtle as well as outright racism. Through it all, they manage to keep a proper perspective, excel in their respective careers and prove to many in the business world that Blacks have a place at the corporate table, that we can turn a profit in the white man's world of business.

Now, these executives are stalwarts of business giving sage advice to all who will listen. The stories they tell and the advice they dispense is as invaluable as having 32 mentors unified in guiding you successfully through your career. They openly share their experiences and feelings about them at the time. Have you ever had doubts about your ability, felt persecuted and put down because of your race or have you felt the sting of subtle racism and not known what to do? They have and
they share that with you. This gives the book a sense of sincerity in its efforts to benefit the reader.

The authors teach the skills to overcome the blows to one's ego that happen to everyone but are often complicated by the color of our skin. Have you ever wondered if someone's intention to help was sincere(an honest gesture to assist) or slightly racist(you need help due to your skin color). The authors tell you the skills they developed to perceive these subtle differences.

What Cracking the Corporate Code does not do is try to provide a step by step formula to success. The book decribes the loneliness of success experienced by these Black executives, the ambiguous nature of corporate power and the reality of "unwritten rules" in every business.

The authors recognize that a cookie cutter approach will fail the reader. The real keys to success are embedded in the stories of the executives as we read about their rise to power.

As I expound on to a great extent at www.blackwealthnow.com, core sets of skills are what separate the winners from the losers in business and finance. This book recognizes that African Americans require all the skills whites need to succeed as well an additional set of skills to thrive as Black men and women in a hostile (though there has been improvement) business world.

A few of the skills learned in Cracking the Corporate Code include reading unwritten rules, playing the corporate game, building a base of supporters, cultivating a network and wielding corporate power.

32 African American executives each with decades of experience giving advice and sharing wisdom on these critical issues and more makes Cracking the Corporate Code an indispensable success guide on the bookshelves of all African Americans at any level and in any business.

I'll end here with a quote from one of the African American
executives from the book.

"None of us has gotten here on our own. We may have busted our butts, worked extremely hard, made lots of personal sacrifices, and brought some talent and ability to the table. I believe all that is true, but we didn't do it alone. We've all had people who have been there either directly or indirectly and made a difference."

Insightful Advice for Rising [Black] Executives

Over 250 Black men and women have risen to senior positions in major corporations. Along their climb, these leaders have learned, grown, achieved, and influenced as highly effective executives. They have overcome the challenges of being Black, complicating the normally difficult path of moving up the corporate hierarchy. That's the primary story of this book. At least, that's the premise of a book subtitled "The Revealing Success Stories of 32 African-American Executives."

All that aside, I gained a lot from this book. I'm not Black. I'm not a high level executive of a major corporation. I'm a Certified Management Consultant. I help executives do a better job as leaders. To give developing executives the answers they need to succeed, I'd recommend careful reading of this book. Page after page delivers valuable lessons in a captivating way.

The design of this book is quite effective. Chapters headed Ambiguity, Managing Your Demons, Fitting In, Reading Unwritten Rules, Making Your Mark, Managing Relationships, and several aspects of power weave meaningful lessons together into a amazing package of advice. Cobbs and Turnock teach through their own words, illuminated beautifully by mentoring lessons from the 32 selected executives. The role models are liberally quoted, giving them a powerful platform to share their experiences and advice with readers. Their testimonials give so much to those who follow them.

The primary target of this book might be considered rising executives from diverse backgrounds. The demographic description goes far beyond Black men and women. Everyone can gain from this growth tool. I particularly commend it to young people in college and even in high school. You will learn, be inspired, and be freed to achieve far beyond where you ever thought you might go.

My copy of this book will be donated to the library at Hiram College, the Ohio liberal arts college that gave me the boost to achieve what I have in life. I trust it will inspire others to reach for their highest potential.

A heartwarming story. Not only the story of one man's courage and determination to overcome the challenges of near total paraplegia to become a successful artist-----but also the story of the generosity of spirit that he encounters in the benefactors and friends that he meets along the way.
The author brings us into this "Creative Odyssey" and with clarity and wit enchants us and puts us in touch with the best the human spirit has to offer, filling us with warmth and hope and the appreciation of life's gifts.

This is a very well-written character study describing life in the first half of the 20th century. It would be of specific interest to people who enjoy history, particulary first and second-generation Americans in the Northeast.

Floyd is a fascinating character and well worth the time spent learning about him.

Does one's inspiration and motivation for living a meaningful and gratifying life get any better than this? A Creative Odyssey is a real story about how two very special individuals, Richie and Floyd, met despite distances and backgrounds far apart, resulting in a captivating combination of courage and caring. It is a story that had to be told. Author Dick Rotelli had a huge advantage in relating the human bonding aspect while interweaving much of the history of the times and locale of Framingham, Massachusetts. Richie was the author's dad.

Floyd Walser, stricken as a young man with polio, refused to allow his adversity to become an obstacle in experiencing a rewarding and productive life as an accomplished artist. Richie, a neighbor and mechanical wizard, one of Floyd's closest supporters, provided not just a spirit of hope and friendship, but took his mechanical ingenuity to the next level in building several apparatuses that would miraculously facilitate Floyd's mobility- including a fishing boat in which Floyd spent many enjoyable days on a nearby pond.

An interesting assortment of historical photographs sprinkled throughout the book capture the colorful flavor of the times and the closeness of an immigrant Italian family, while much of Floyd's remarkable artwork demonstrates his true genius. Dick Rotelli has a down-to-earth style of writing that effortlessly conveys the intended message of his story; a message of courage, human kindness, generosity, caring and of course, family pride. This is a must read for anyone who needs a little inspiration now and then.

"A Creative Odyssey" is the engaging narrative of a young Texan man by the name of Floyd Walser who answers adversity with courage, and finds meaning in a life of art. It is also the story of his inspired patrons - the Greenes, husband and wife musicians who bring a young Walser to Massachusetts to live with them and to study art at the famed Museum School in Boston. Lastly, it is the story of Walser's neighbor Richie Rotelli, and how the courage of a disabled man facing life without excuses can inspire the generous support and incredible ingenuity of a man and his family. This is a true story of Americana, with threads of interesting historical detail supplied by the author. The most compelling aspect of the book is the human drama - how people respond to challenges, whether their own or someone else's. This is not history writ large, but the rich history of extraordinary people you find next door to you. This book should resonate particularly with residents of Framingham, Massachusetts, where most of the story is set. Well-researched, the book is written with a personal, refreshingly unmannered voice. The book is illustrated liberally with examples of Walser's art, and with many interesting period photographs.

America in its Infancy

America was still young, when this story began. Hardships were common among the general population. Immigration from Europe was still heavy in the early part of the Century, and the story is alive with the kindness, and helping of recent immigrants.
It brought back so many memories for me, things I had forgotten, about how good family and neighbors could be for and to each other.(It is especially interesting, if you grew up in Framingham, with Fred Bortolussi, Henry Belloli, and Richard Rotelli, as I did.) Here was a man, Floyd, born over two thousand miles away from New England, who came as a stranger, and ended up being supported, loved, cared for and encouraged, by total strangers who in essence became his family. It is more than the story of Floyd Walser and the Greenes, who took in Floyd Walser , it is the story of the neighbors, the Rotelli's, the Bartolussi's, the Belloli's and especially Richard Rotelli, who invented an electric wheelchair and a boat for Floyd, and of Carlo Belloli, who was with Floyd to the end. We can not forget the author's part in this story, obviously he was awed and impressed by the interaction of the people involved in doing what we are here on earth to do. Give of ourselves, our love and caring, to help others learn to overcome the obstacles in their lives. Truly an all American story, garnished with history, as it was occurring around us.
