This well-written account of the intermingled lives of several lifelong friends who come together after the death of one of them is gripping and extremely compelling. The fact that it is set in the place of my birth (New York City) made it come that much more alive for me. Even though I live in the South, New York City will always have a place in my heart.

Ross weaves their life stories - their passions, idiosyncracies, sexual escapades, secrets and individual directions each one of their lives have subsequently taken - into a dramatic, well-paced and very believable story that will draw you in and keep you captivated from the very start. A MUST-READ for those with a penchant for drama, suspense, a little humor and a love for the element of surprise! E. Lynn Harris, MOVE OVER - Lin Ross is up next!

Simply brilliant...

Author Lin M. Ross is the first writer that has ever effectively gotten me inside the mind and heart of the homosexual. In his book, The Moanin' After, he took me on a vivid trip, a vision so real I was there - lost in the downtown, uptown, funky, crazy, wild, scary, ecstasy pill popping, boozing, shooting up, jazzy, dancing, desiring and groping she-males all day and all nightlife, the go-for-broke and break-you-it-will bizarre, biggest beast of a burg called the Big Apple. There I lived for a fantastic while, inside the body and life and times of main character, David Richmond.

During my life experience as David, I have AIDS. My best friends, all my lovers, even my enemies - are dying. I am dying. I am caring, swearing, snatching joy, loving, crying, feeling lost and afraid and angry and remorseful and vengeful, and yet blissful often enough to want desperately to live on, to love, to be. I desire to be real, to be me, and to not tolerate or give out any BS. Life is too short and precious for any trace of phoniness. I spit in the face of disingenuousness. I kiss the face of truthfulness; I caress and embrace real love, no matter the form or gender in which it is presented to me.

Ross' characters are superbly crafted. Complex and multi-dimensional is an understatement. One can immediately tell that this author is a poet. His prose is poetry in devotion - an eloquent, profound and beautiful dedication to truth and honesty in writing. The sentences sometimes dance across the page like a brilliant ballet dancer, other times they storm and rage from left to right and back again with the ranting, scathing, insane curses and howls of a madman.

And through it all there is the moaning. David, and his three other fellow former members of a youthful "flash in the pan" one-time hit record producing singing group - a brief fame that brought wealth and success and/or opportunity to all but one, the spiteful, jealous, selfish, self-serving and plotting for vengeance "Browny," are all seeking that elusive deep "Blue Moan." What is that "Blue Moan?" I'll let you discover that for yourself. It is the essence, the meaning, the moanin' of it all. This is a marvelously crafted work, a tell-it-like-it is story of men who love men, who love women, who love life, who hope and grasp and moan and groan and live and die in the desperate search for meaning, for moaning ... for living for, and finding, true love.

Bravo Again, and Again......

Having been in delight mode upon finishing Manhood, since Mr. Ross had invited us, through his poetry and his brilliant writing, to a world I felt so familiar to, stories and situations he told kept reminding me of me, of my friends and our life stories, thus blowing my mind, page after page, chapter after chapter. It was as if my youth and my friendships were being validated in poetry and exquisite writing...The book had ended so soon, or I had been so into it, that I was caught by surprise when I reached the last page.

Having recognized those who made my youth what it was through David, Face, Browny and Ty, I wanted to savor the memory, the joys, the heartbrakes and the music, and more importantly, the streets of New York as they were when it all happened, Mr. Ross vividly brought back into our present the past that helped many of us shape the life we now live, and the way we live it...

And then I started the Moaning After: I was so delighted to re-live a- not -so- distant past in words of exquisite expression and poetry. I got caught in the story as deeply as I was in Manhood. The Moaning After went into these characters future, into a more mature group of young men moving on with their lives (and deaths), again making it strikingly similar to what remains a recent past in the lives of many of us out there.

But this time around, I took my time, I needed to savour Mr. Ross's writing to the fullest, I needed to let his poetry fill-up my mind, my heart and soul, and once again, Mr. Ross delighted me throughout The Moaning After.... I was particularly touched over the fact that, as these characters life details and situations started to emerge, we could identify with details and events in our own lives, hidden somewhere, down Memory Lane.

Mr Ross, through the Moaning after, once again touched some of us profoundly, "killing us softly with his words", his poetry, his story line, and exquisite handling of the English Language.

I look forward to more, and will be paying close attention to his future books to come out on shelves, looking forward to the delights he has accustomed us to....

No doubt, L.M. Ross is one of my favorite authors, as I am one of his fervent and delighted readers.....

Manhood continues in the 2nd book.......

If you enjoyed Manhood: The Longest Moan by L.M. Ross, you will love the sequel, The Moanin' After!!! This new book picks up where the last book left off and fills in the details of some of the situations that the first book left a question mark on. This book also goes deeper into the life of the deceased Tyrone, as well as into the life of David, Tyrone's best friend after Tyrone's sudden death. This book also introduces a new and mysterious character Kindred, in a masterful way that only Lin Ross can. He has a way of weaving his lyrical prose and puts in a mysterious mode, but then reveals the mystery later. You will find closure for some of the characters of the first book. In my mind, reading Mr. Ross' books is like mentally watching a movie that you can't move from your seat on. Your eyes are glued and every page there lies a surprise, a new detail that you did not expect. His work is genuine and very relatable. I own both of his books and count them as 2 of my prized literary assets. Thank You Lin Ross for creating these characters who have so touched my life; and please create more works of genius!!!

First the good points. This book is well written. I liked the poems. I liked Ms. L'Engle's descriptions. It starts out interesting and gradually gets more complex. It was fun to hear echoes of Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which in the aunts' bickering.

And now the rest:

Given how many of them there are, the characters are well developed enough, but I would have liked to find out more about a couple more of them. By the end of the book the only character that had started to feel real was Ron. Even the narrator seemed flat.

Most damning I can't figure out what I was suppose to learn. Race relations are complicated? That everyone has secrets and skeletons? That people, especially old ones, have a lot of facets? What was the purifying fire that Stella faced? Was it supposed to make her love more worthy of this unknown husband about whose return we're supposed to be overjoyed? (There are even hints that he might not be 100% on the right side.)

I obviously missed something that the rest of the reviewers saw. Things get more and more intense and dark and end with ... hey! even MORE dark plus some violence. That's the sort of climax we get every day in real life. I expected more from Ms. L'Engle, and I am irritated that I spent so much time on this book.

Thsi is book a wonderful discovery I made. I love L'Engle, she is a phenomenal author with quick wit, and a mixture of science, faith: always a great story. This novel is no different. I loved the imagery and the setting: a beach in turn of the century South Carolina. The story centers around Stella, the young British bride of Terry, her American husband. She is sent to live with his family in South Carolina, as Terry goes off on a secret mission for the US State Department. Since it is the south and it is the turn of the century, the civil war and it's aftermath is as much of character as the people themselves.
Stella soon discovers that Terry's family is not all it seems and as she gets to know them and they her, she discovers some horrible past experiances and secrets that arre still effecting the family today. The novel is full of wit, literary refernces: Her Great Aunts play a wonderful guess the quote game. However, it has a very dark side and only after she has gone through love's terrible side can she and the famlliy come out on the other side of the sun. I can not reccomend this book enough!

Astonishingly good work of Fiction. With a Message.

Like many other reviewers, I was exposed to Madeleine L'Engle's work through "A Wrinkle in Time." I have reread most of her Children's work and then started through her Adult work. While "The Small Rain" (her first novel) and "A Severed Wasp" (one of her last novels) were excellent and well-written, nothing prepared me for the brilliance and imagination of "The Other Side of the Sun." Right from the first chapter I was drawn into the fascinating story of the post-civil war south and all its lingering conflicts. I found all the characters completely believeable and compelling, especially Honoria and the Aunties. Even minor characters were completely fleshed out and interesting.

I found myself newly fascinated with the Author. What kind of a person can dream up such a complex and beautiful storyline and fill it with such amazing characters? The complex story never became predictable or trite. What a refreshing and thoroughly entertaining piece of work. In my mind, it is L'Engle's best.

Meet the Reniers

An elderly widow, Stella Renier, returns from her husband's funeral to her family in the American South. Before facing the rest of the family she and her grandson spend some time together at the family's coastal estate, Illyria, where she relates to him the story of her arrival there as a young bride many years before. Stella had traveled to Illyria to await her husband's return from a mysterious and dangerous mission. She found herself struggling to understand both the alien cultures of the antebellum South with it's strict and confusing rules and the family with it's long history and many secrets. She finds help in the most surprising places including her husband's long dead grandmother.

For those familiar with L'Engle's other works this one does not feature either the Murray/O'Keefe or the Austin families of her more well known works. The Renier family is alluded to, though, in some of these works. As always with L'Engle's works the characters are compeling, drawing the reader into the complexities of their lives, eliciting first a smile at their eccentricities and then a tear at their sorrows.

This lesser known work is a treat for a L'Engle fan or a wonderful introduction to this marvelous author, in either case it is a story that will stay with the reader long after the last page.

A book to read through to the end, and then read again.

Innocence can be a deadly thing. So Stella Renier, nineteen-year-old bride from England, learns when she reaches her new husband's home in South Carolina. It's 1910, and the veterans of the War Between the States are growing old. Yet the conflicts that war failed to resolve - along with some new ones created by its aftermath - simmer just below the surface of the coastal community surrounding the house called Illyria. That house will become the one place Stella regards as home throughout her married life, which is destined to be long. We know this because elderly and recently widowed Stella narrates the story for her adult grandson, during another era of turmoil in the American South. But in 1910, as she comes to Illyria without the husband she's barely had time to wed - sent to his family while Terry Renier sets off on a secret assignment for his employer, the U.S. State Department - it's a fantastic house in an alien country. And her husband's family are, of course, strangers.

How can Stella, who grew up at Oxford, understand the basics of keeping herself safe in a place where she's expected to treat the first Negroes she has ever met as if they were members of a different species? How can the girl reared by an agnostic father grasp the conflict between the powerful Christian faith of Honoria, a one-time African princess who takes care of everyone at Illyria, and the dark spirits invoked by the "Granddam" in the desperately impoverished black hamlets just inland from the beachfront homes of the Reniers? Stella doesn't even know the significance of robed horsemen who ride by night. But her husband's people all know it. And so does the English-educated black physician whose danger she increases with every innocent gesture of friendship.

"The Other Side of the Sun" is a book to read through to the end, and then read again. It has much to say about the nature of faith, of fate, of aging, and of human love. But most of all, it's a well-told and compelling story about characters as real as any I've ever met on the printed page.

There are many books out there for educators of gifted children, but this book is by far the best, most comprehensive book for those of us parents who have the unique opportunity to have profoundly gifted children. It will guide you through the child's psychology, sense of motivation and educational obstacles and opprotunities. If you have a gifted child, you many not have to look any further than this book for all of your resources. Give this book a try before you by others.

On a daily basis, I conduct evaluations of children with behavioral, social, and/or learning challenges. When I discover that a child is gifted, the first resource I share with parents is A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children. This guide is very comprehensive and easy to read. It provides an entry point into the field of giftedness. It helps parents begin to have an understanding of their child's needs. The guide includes resources for further study. If you are a parent of a gifted child, this is a must read!

I was afraid that since my children are only 3 and 2 that this book would have nothing I could apply to my daily life (yet) but I was wrong. If you are like me and have children that you feel in you gut are just smarter, more intense and brighter than other children (past that of just a regular proud parent thinking their child is the smartest child on the Earth) then I recommend this book. It has real suggestions to try for discipline which is where I needed help. I also just wanted something to definitively tell me, "Yes, your children are not just bright - they are gifted." and I think I got my answer from this book.

I combined this book with Raising Your Spirited Child and it made what I was dealing with so clear and I knew I was not alone.

This is a comprehensive book for anyone who has a gifted child. It is also appropriate for anyone who works with gifted children (teachers, psychologists, etc.).

Amazon incorrectly lists this book as 'Out of Print'. It is not. It is available on the Barnes & Noble website, the Borders website, the publisher's website, etc. The only place it is not available, apparently, is Amazon.

I also highly recommend getting the CliffsTestPrep for the Generalist Ec-4. It has 2 full length practice tests and is also GREAT! I passed my test the first time with a 280!!

Janice Nath's book is the first textbook I actually read cover to cover. I not only passed the test on my first attempt with a 284 but I learned things I hope to use in my future classroom. The book is set up in sections based on the content areas covered in the test and gives an excellent review of the overwhelming amount of information a grade school teacher needs to know to be an effective teacher. I was really at a loss to know where to start studying for this test as the subject matter was so diverse. This textbook gave me direction. I got it only two weeks prior to taking the test and read every page. If you choose to purchase the book I hope you enjoy it just as much and good luck on the test. In fact I liked it so much I just wrote my first review on Amazon so others nervous about taking the test will get the help they need. :)

i have been reading books by bodie and brock thoene since i was a junior in high school. now that i am a senior in college, i still enjoy rereading their older books and discovering their newer books. i believe it is safe to say that you can never go wrong when you choose to read any of their books.

what is especially interesting about this book is the tremendous amount of detail in it and the complexity of each and every character, from
"Caro-line" Jensen, to Jefferson and Willa-Mae Canfield, to Grandma Amos and even to little Joey Tucker.

and what blesses me even more is that, unlike other Christian or non-Christian authors, she does not compromise the name of Christ. in fact, faith in Jesus even with all the craziness that happens in the world (good and bad), is the whole point. that when one puts their faith in Jesus and tests it against everything good and bad in this life, it always proves itself true and strong ("Never will I leave you or forsake you"-Jesus the Christ). i always learn something new, historically and spiritually, when reading thoene books.

two thumbs up!

From atheists, I've read Russell, Sartre, Nietzsche, Sagan, Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, and Antony Flew (when he was an atheist). From Christians, I've read Craig, Zacharias, Sproul, Strobel, Pascal, Lewis, Blomberg, John Dickson, and Moreland. Although both lists of atheists and theists have good writers who can make vivid points, none is the teacher like Geisler.

Norman Geisler and Bocchino are not poets. They are straightforward and the powerful imagery of their book is using phrases by the authors mentioned above. However, they have packaged a very good text with a wide breathe of knowledge and connected the fact that beliefs have consequences. Those consequences will spill into all aspects of our lives no matter if we realize it or not. This book basically shows the logical sequence of philosophical premises with regards to major worldviews and how those worldviews, if honest and logically consistent, will play out in fields like science, law, morality, and education.

This book is a must read for all students in a secular environment, and for anyone seeking a reasonable defense of the Christian faith. Evolution and moral relativism are not satisfying answers logically or practically. Geisler does a masterful job of removing the scientific underpinnings of evolutionary faith and establishing a well reasoned defense of Intelligent Design. He further takes on issues such as justice and absolute moral standards vs. relativistic morality and judicial philosophy. THe last section of the book points to every man's need for Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord and establishes the Bible, as God's revelation, as the only proper epistemoligical starting point.

A must-read!

This book sat on my shelf collecting dust for nearly 6 years. It wasn't until I found myself as a first-year teacher needing a strategy to refute evolution and a darwinistic view of our world that I even felt compelled to pick it up. This book is an excellent resource...logical, methodical, and sound-minded in its application of reason to matters of faith. I highly recommend it just as strongly to one longing to worship the Lord God with all his mind, as to another who is still unsure of the intellectual credibility of the Christian faith. In terms of books that have changed my life, this title will rank with the best of them...only coming in behind the Bible itself, and C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity.

I loved this book. As a stay at home mom, I felt all the things the author expressed, but was couldn't formulate it in to words myself because I had stuffed it all to make due each day.
Great that it was from the husbands perspective and every man that has a stay at home mom for a wife should read it.

A delightful read!

This is a must have for anyone in the corporate world. Written in terms that people who spend most of their time at work will understand, this book outlines how difficult it is to run a household (especially with children). Even without children, it is easy to prioritize work and not focus on "running your marriage". Great book, perfectly describes the dynamic between husband and wife and what can go wrong.

WANT TO KNOW WHAT TO GIVE YOUR GUY FOR VALENTIN'S DAY? This book is your best bet. Give him a glimpse of how your life intertwines with his, and why understanding each other is so important for a good healthy family life. It's fun to see how a man tackles the challenges of taking on a woman's roll in the household. Check it out! The authors sense of humor is refreshing!

Ladies, treat YOURSELVES to the best birthday present, anniversary present or Mother's Day present and buy this book for your husband, boyfriend, partner, or significant other to read. If you've ever felt your partner take you for granted, and who hasn't, then make sure they read "What happended to the girl I married?" In it, Michael Miller takes us along on his self-imposed journey asking the question that all working husbands of part-time or full-time stay-at-home wives ask, "WHAT DOES SHE DO ALL DAY?" Obviously thinking it isn't taking care of the laundry, groceries, cleaning, dinner, bills, or most importantly - HIM! You will laugh at Miller's self-deprecating AHA moments, when the tables are turned, and he becomes the stay-at-home-dad. He learns along the way, with tenderness, love, and good humor, just where the girl he married went. Lucky for us, he's willing to share his journey.

Should be legally required reading to get married!

This book is filled with so many 'oh my god, that is me' moments that it made me wonder if it was written about me personally. It is short on pop-psychology platitudes and long on practical, real life views into a topic that seems to be on the mind of almost every guy I know. The author's wry, sardonic humor makes it incredibly easy and quick to read, but be prepared for a good look in the mirror! Not only is this book an absolute must read for anyone wondering what happened to the fun and romance in their relationship, it should be required reading to get married in the first place.

I, too, read Yellow Eyes, a book gotten from the Weekly Reader, in the sixties. I will always remember it. It touched me so well that about two years ago I set out to find a copy. I found an original copy and paid 45 dollars for it. It was a bargin In my eighth grade English class I wrote a poem about it and received an A.

His long teeth glistened in the sun.
Dead upon him was my gun.
He knew that I was armed and frightened.
His tail twitched. His musclles tightened.
Then in one long single bound,
He knocked me flying to the ground.
Now all the birds around him sing.
He has proven he is king.

The first thing I ever wrote thanks to Rutherford Montgomery.

I still love anything with his name on it, but I will never forget Yellow Eyes.

I read this book when I was in elementary school (going on 43 here!) and until a year ago, I had this book in my collection to pass on to my kids, but sadly it has disappeared. I used to love this book and I love reading books about animals and believe it or not this book made me cry as did the book Snow Dog and Old Yeller. I even did a report on Yellow Eyes when I read it for school.

Still influenced decades later!

I read this book when I was a kid and remember it as one of my favorites. Recently I found it in a box of old books at my mother's house and brought it out to read to my kids. They where just as spell bound as I was. It is one of the most successful books at seeing life through the eyes of a wild animal without huminizing the animal. It does harken back to a time when the govermant paid people to kill animals rather then preserve them. That is a little confussing to kids but is a valuable history lesson.

"Yellow Eyes" is the first book that I can remember picking out from my school library, back when I was in 2nd grade at Des Moines Christian School. I remember this distinctly--I had to give them my last name in the library and I did not know how to spell it! Like other reviewers here, I can remember feeling for this cougar as it made its way. It imparted in me a deep respect for nature. To this day, the cougar is my "favorite animal", no doubt largely due to the influence of this tale. I bought a copy for my own son to read.

Its typically difficult for me to actually review an anthology. I don't like to delve too deeply into one particular story because I would do so to the detriment of the other tales in the book which also captured my attention. In this book it would really be unfair because so many of these stories were so creative and fun that focusing on one in particular just isn't possible.
From the short story that cries to be fleshed out into a full sized novel to the self-contained punch you in the mouth tidbit, this book is packed with a great cross section of new zombie tales from authors I have seen plenty of before to some new folks. Though not all of the stories resonated with me on the same level my belief is that if you love zombie fiction you will find more than enough here to make you feel as if this book was well worth the investment.
I do love the traditional zombie tale: a basic life and death struggle with death, and un-death, seemingly unstoppable. There are plenty of the traditional tales here along with a wide array of the unexpected and creative that demanded as much of my attention and appreciation as the more traditional stuff.
Sorry, but I cannot give a preference for a favorite story. Too many stuck with me long after I was done reading this book. Lets just say I have more than one favorite to choose from in this collection and I would bet you will to.

You want Zombies, Gore, and Violence? Get this book! The publisher put together a truly unique blend of voices to create a fantastic collection of stories. They run the gamut from traditional to just plain weird, but weird in a good way.

The short story is, sadly, a dying (erm, undying?) breed so appreciate it when a great collection comes along. My review refers to the Kindle version of the book.

Zombology is a must have for fans of the zombie genre. The stories look at zombies from new and different angles. Some really get the reader thinking, "What would I do if there was zombie apocalypse?".

Thank goodness for the short-story format, or else I never would have been able to put the book down. When I reached the end of the last story, I was actually kind of sad. Need more braaaiiins...Guess I'll have to wait for the next selection from Library of the Living Dead Press.
