My grandson, Vinny, LOVES all things Ricky Ricotta. This "fun book" is no exception. There are lots of activities to keep an 11 year old Ricky Ricotta fan occupied during his summer visit with grandmother. A great value.

My eight year old loves it.

My son was given this book as a gift and has fallen in love with it. The story is simple to follow and loves the flip-o-rama feature. Flip-o-rama is real cheesy, but hey what kid does not like cheese. You flip through the pages to see the action animated. At first my son thought the book was to thick, but with awesome illustrations and flip-o-rama it is a quick read. Go for it. I already bought another six of these books. Anything to keep the kid off the tv (sorry dtv).

I have read both this book and the first in the series and LOVE them. I have re-read them many times and have been looking for the third installment since I was in high school. It is very disappointing to find out that it was never published. Diane, PLEASE finish writing the series! It makes me sad to know those characters are languishing without the resolution of the plot.

WONDERFUL. - I'll pay for a rough draft even of the third!

This book was a gritty, involving book about the civil war. I only found this and the first one by going to Gettysburg book shops. It's a shame because Ms. Carey, they are AMAZING books. If anyone reading this review is interested in any small way in American history, you will find these books difficult to put down. If Ms. Carey even has a rough manuscript of the third, I'd pay $20 to see even that! Please write it?!?!

I lied...I haven't read the book. However, I HAVE been in touch with Diane Carey, and she says that the publisher made the decision to abandon the trilogy due to some unrelated internal problems. She expressed that same disappointment that you all seem to; the series was very special to her. Count yourselves among the fortunate to have read the first two installments...I can't find them anywhere, despite my determination. In the meantime, Diane Carey also writes prolificly in the Star Trek genre. I imagine the very idea would put some people off, but I encourage you to give her Star Trek novels a try, particularly "First Frontier" and "The Great Starship Race". She is a genius with action sequences, and an emotional maestro. I doubt that anyone would be disappointed, and if you are a Star Trek fan, you will be overjoyed.

Charles Stanley is brilliant. I've read and heard so much from this man I can't properly review this book (borrowed last year) ... and his stuff blurs together for me. He talks about his life, tough childhood, and struggles ... he has a knack at meeting people where they are and giving spot on strength. Such a godly man he might freak you out if you are not ready for him. He was divorced. He keeps stuff real. This book helped me after I left my husband. I had little strength, fears, stress...this man helped greatly. Now I listen to him every morning without fail...and I LOVE music, but he gets me to flip over.

A classic

I stumbled across Charles Stanley preaching on the VCY America network early on in my quest for truth at the turn of the millennium ... and almost immediately came across this heart-warming book. I'd heard the phrase "Let go and let God" before; with this volume, Dr. Stanley showed me how to do that.

When you watch the Olympics, remember that Chill that goes down your spine when you see someone do the impossible? I had that feeling repeatedly reading this book. You follow the Mighty Atom through his childhood, learning valuable life lessons with him, that serve you both well. You picture in your mind's eye what it must take to bend steel in your bare hands, break chains across your chest, and other impossible feats. This tiny man who performed feats of strength into his eighties, through sheer willpower and determination....

I've never read a more inspirational book. I can see why copies are almost impossible to find.

If I could own only two books, one would be my Bible and the other Ed Spielman's remarkable biography of Joe Greenstein, a.k.a. The Mighty Atom.

Here was a man who exalted in life, exuded life and understood life far, far better than most.

Do you have problems in life? Who doesn't? After you read this book you will be able to take to heart the words of the Atom's protege, Slim Farman: "I never had to prove to him that I was somebody. He told me I was."

And the words of Joe Greenstein himself: "There is no such thing as a little man, and nothing is impossible."

Whatever it takes, GET A COPY OF THIS BOOK!

A Tall Man, The Strongest in the World...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-03
In his prime, Joseph Greenstein was the world's "strongest man" physically and billed as 'The Modern Hercules,' 'The Young Sandow," and 'The Ancient Samson' all in one -- The Mighty Atom, though he never did fly out of a canon. He rose from the ghettos of Poland, in Eastern Europe, to become the most famous of the weightlifter-strongmen ever.

He was a slim 5'4" body builder, weighing in at 145 pounds; the photo shows him as a young man showing off his becepts. In vaudeville at the Apollo Theatre he was billed as Joseph Green. He looked like a freak in bushy hair and Tarzan outfits complete with matching headband and funny looling shoes which strapped up his leg to the knee. That must have been the style in 1909. In his act, he straightened out hourshoes, crushed spikes in his hands, even had strong teeth -- bit through iron bars.

He used Asian techniques of concentration, Jewish mystical writings, and a natural begetarian diet. Who said it akes eating meat to make one strong? He later developed a more balanced body physique. Joseph appeared on Coney Island, the playground of the world, as shown in the movie, 'Inside Daisy Clover.' At Madison Square Garden he put on a martial arts show.

We all have an inner strength with the potential of a brick-wall. It doesn't take meditation to surpass hurdles, but a strong-as-iron determination to prove you're right. When I started out in PTA as a young mother, 5'l", 97 lbs., as a local unit president, I was given the honor and silver platter from the female school principal who called me a "brick-wall." Unlike those who preceded me, I did not acquiese to her rein over fund-raising profits. We paid for necessary items such as a paved area and playgfround at the school but would not finance building repairs -- that was the responsibility of the school board. I learned my speaking ability by appearing before them (and getting my way through friendly persuasion) on occasion, and conducting the PTA Meetings. As Regional Director, I visited and informed units throughout thirteen counties, which included the famous Tullahoma, Tennessee -- near Lynchburg.

Joseph was such a sensation that articles about him appeared in 'The Sun,' 'New York Journal,' 'New York American,' 'New York Telegram,' and 'New York Post,' as well as 'Buffalo Evening Times.' He proved that sometimes little is big and here's great strength in small packages.

Finally acknowledging his Jewish heritage, in 1978, he appeared with his protege, Slim Farman (who towered over him), in a black tunic with a Star of David over the chest. He was an old man, age 85, with white hair, beard, and mustache. He had achieved "the impossible."

Ever heard of man bite through tempered iron with his teeth...or hang from an airplane by his hair? Just because you may not have heard of Joseph "Mighty Atom" Greenstein or his accomplishments it does not mean you should ignore this book, quite the opposite in fact. I got this book as a young child in the 1980's and have read it many times. A riveting and inspirational read. Anyone interested in sports, martial arts, nutrition, spirituality or just looking for a self help guide would be wise to read this. A fascinating life with lessons for all of us...not just philosophical but practical too. Joseph Greenstein was not only the strongest man in the world, he was a giant of a character...raising a large family and much money for charity, providing health lectures and products for thousands of poor Americans. If I had just ten books on a desert island this would be one of them.

POV of a teenage boy we all know

Review Date: 2007-07-19
Storky is a fun book written from Michael "Storky" Pomerantz's point of view in diary form. It was fun to follow the daily happenings of this freshman boy. He starts out with a journal on the computer and then figures out someone may be reading his personal thoughts, so decides to just type the pages and print them out, but not save them.

Storky's sister reveals some of his inner most thoughts, showing that she was the one reading the journal. Being of nerd fame, all Michael wants to do is get through his freshman year of high school without being noticed too much.

Storky tries very hard to be accepted by his father, who lives outside the home--and tries to accept his mother's antics and deal with the mixed-up, crazy Jewish family traditions all while trying to maintain a semi normal life. Every day is a new adventure for Storky, right up until the end when his mother meets and marries his dentist. All through the dating process, he wants to hate Dr. Berman but finds he can't hate a man who has befriended him in the only way he knows how. Michael ends the school year planning another person's life and gets the girl, not the one of his dreams or that he thought he would get--but someone better.

Armchair Interviews says: Most of us can relate to that freshmen year in high school. Nice story from boy's point of view--written by D.L. (Debra).

Written in the journal-entry style a' la Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging, this book will make anyone who has ever been a high school freshman laugh every few pages. The diary follows the first year in high school for Michael "Storky" Pomerantz, as he tries to lose his nickname, get a girlfriend, and learn about making the right choices in life. Unfortunately he is not only saddled with a useless divorced Dad in the throes of a mid-life crisis, but other calamitous events in the life of a 14-year old: the uncontrollable male body part he nicknames "Rex" (who causes embarrassing things to happen while he is trying to impress girls at the blackboard with his Spanish skills), a mom who begins dating (gasp!) the pudgy family dentist, a friend who introduces him to alcohol, and Michael's own age-appropriate musings and wonderings about sex. First-time author Deborah Garfinkle (note that the publisher uses the "J.K. Rowling-don't-let-the boys-know-it-was-written-by-a-woman" name change), gets right into the head of a smart, sarcastic and sensitive young teen with great skill. The character of Michael is unmistakably Jewish and living a very middle-class, 3-times a year, Reform Jewish existence in San Diego. Librarians: beware of the maturity of the themes, but know there are many young high-schoolers who will be passing this hilarious book from hand to hand and waiting most impatiently for the certain sequel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I wasn't sure how I would do with it, what with it being a YA novel, but let me say that it was probably one of my favorite reads of all-time. Mind you, I have to rank it as I would The Warriors in my all-time movies: Though it is one of my favorite flicks, in ranking it, I have to rank it with ALL variables mixed in. :)

That said, I think folks of all ages can enjoy this one. Even folks who don't like to read.

Now Mike Pomerantz aka Storky is a freshman in highschool and is going through some normal teenage things.

I thought this was a well written book for a female women, but unless you have some real bad hormone problems most guys arnt like that(or that much of a pervert) So If Your A Girl And You Have Read This Book DO NOT THINK THAT EVERY GUY THINKS LIKE THAT.

This book was a highly entertaining book and slightly disturbing on my part but yeah...Well I would Highly Recomend This Book To People :)

This book was very informative. I learned a lot about the Down-Low life style from a woman's point of view. I have read On The Down-Low by J.L. King and it seems as if there were details left out that would be very helpful in learning about the difference between a man being curious and actually being on the D.L. This book was very interesting and I would recommend this book to all my friends also I would read the next book that Joy Marie writes.

i dealth with this back in 1991-92 while in high school. my high school sweet heart thought he'd use me as a way to prove he wasn't gay. i felt i was the only woman on earth that had gone through this and turns out that i'm not. TSUTATDL (acronym for the title) is a must read for all women. this episode in my life prompted me to write Blind Temptations the Seduction of Sex, Lies & Betrayal. At one point i was Chante so i know how it feels to find yourself in this painful situation.

i love the begining where there were DL profiles and telling us what to look for. the terms they use with the meaning was another helpful bit of advice. Although, due to my experience i can spot a man on the DL a mile away. i still learned a lot from this book and didn't know it all when it comes to the DL like i thought. i met these women at the BEA and they gave me this book for free. i wished it was out when i needed it back in the early 90's but everything has it's season and this is book couldn't have come at a better time!

i hope women take heed of this invaluable info and stop going on looks alone. you have to look deep before you leap as Judge Mabeline would say; especially, if your man was on lock down for any extended amnount of time. you never know if he became someone's piece or made someone his, because he's not telling simply because he feels his manhood will be challenged. trust and believe he didn't stay behind bars all that time and didn't engage. Get tested ladies make him get tested time his foot touch the land of freedom and even then still make him wear protection until at least 6 months of negative testing has gone by.

Nothing but the truth!

We have heard the calling for empathy from brothers on the down-low. Many of these men agonize over their lifestyle choices. Some down-low exposes that share similar points of views, while enlightening, have left something to be desired. This book shatters the polished shield of the down-low lifestyle.

Easily read in one sitting, The Straight-Up Truth provides eye opening details from the dl mans perspective. This book gives real life examples of statements made in their own environment and cracks the codes amongst the jargon.

What about the women? Will no one tell their story? Will no one understand their pain and tough decisions they are forced to make? The Straight-Up Truth gives these women, who have been betrayed, a voice. Life experiences are shared by several women as they deal with denial, depression and desperation once finding out the truth.

If this book does nothing else it teaches women to use and trust their intuition. This book also implores women to use their right to make their own choice while begging them to be informed about the choice they decide to make. This is not just another book about the down-low lifestyle. What you don't know can kill you. Every woman needs to read this book so that they can be educated. This book does not bash, it does not judge, it simply educates.

Women who have any sort of suspicions about their significant other might find some useful information in this book.
Single or married this is "need to know" information that might end up saving your life!!
Please don't be afraid to educate yourself on this subject and apply the knowledge.
So open your mind and pick up a copy of the book!!

ESSENTIAL READING

Review Date: 2008-10-02
This book penned by two women who had their own personal experience with down low men is an EXCELLENT resource. Instead of just telling their story they sought out all the pertinent information on this `taboo' subject. This book houses a collection of personal stories told by those who lived them, actual online profiles of men on the DL, a list of warning signs, two interviews with real life men on the DL and much more. I was surprised at how informative and `straight-up' this read was. Many people shy away from subjects such as this but the truth is - it is reality, and the more you know the more you can protect yourself from falling victim.

The purpose of this book is to bring the issue of the down low man to the forefront of the minds of women as it is often swept under the rug. There are several books out there claiming to bare all about the DL, but I have not come across one as informative, straight forward, or realistic as this. I cannot stress enough how much more effective this book is than ANY fiction book re-telling a story about this subject. Realistic, cut and dry - between the covers of this book lays an abundance of real information. Kudos Joy Marie! This is truly essential reading.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy represents some of the most original, funny, spellbinding material that I've ever read. The first book contains the most creativity, but the least linearity because of the original format (radio shows). The second and third take off from there and create a crescendo of momentum that I wasn't able to put down (I quite literally read all 5 books within a few days time). The last couple of books might be the weakest, but that's mainly because they must follow such incredible prequels. I cannot overemphasize the entertainment that this series offers. The Hitchhiker's Guide represents a true genre-bursting collection. While at first glance these books might seem to appeal mainly to science fiction readers, they actually have very little in common with sci-fi and readers wishing for a sci-fi environment and story may not find what they expect. These books should appeal to any reader, but those old enough to recall some of the 1980's will especially be able to understand the author's period and setting.

Showcases an aircraft that flew just 164 times

With any theatre of war in the past century, control of the air has been paramount to ultimate success on the battlefield. The resulting aviation arms race has been one of continuous, non-stop technological innovation. One such sterling example is the high-altitude rapid response bomber aircraft such as North American Aviation's XB-70A Valkyrie. Co-authored by military aviation experts Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis, "Valkyrie: North American's Mach 3 Superbomber" showcases an aircraft that flew just 164 times, but was so spectacular in its concept and execution that it became an iconic example of what was technologically possible, only to be scuttled by the political and fiscal conditions that dominated the 1960s. Profusely illustrated with 100 color and 500 black-and-white photographs, "Valkyrie" provides a superbly detailed history of this remarkable and impressive aircraft, making it a highly prized and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, community, and academic library Military Aviation History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

In all the years of interest in this aircraft, this is the first book where I have seen photos of the cockpit, and even detailed diagrams of same. It looks similar to the B-52 cockpit, which I flew for 24 years. Best documented book ever on the B-70.

Best book, by far, that I've seen on this aircraft and this aviation era

I have been interested in the B70 for decades. I read earlier reviews of this book which were critical of the book's publishing quality. If there were any, I certainly didn't notice them.

This is a well written, exceptionally readable book about a fascinating aircraft developed during the apogee of US aviation history. The book had just the right mix of text and photographs. My only regret is that I waited so long to buy the book. This is a MUST for any aviation buff's library.

The Best Book on the XB-70 Yet

This book was the best book I have ever read concerning the XB-70 bomber. Not only do the authors give facts on the XB-70, but they give additional data concerning the events and aircraft that led to the eventual evolvement of this aircraft. The footnotes are numerous leading creedance to the information provided. Volumes of technical data and actual check lists are included as well as actual pilot reports of the flying qualities of the XB-70. If you are a pilot or aviation enthusiast, this is the book for you.

An amazingly comprehensive view of the B-70 project and other military projects that were associated with it. It's a glimpse into a frantic period when weapons systems were evolving so rapidly and the stakes couldn't have been higher... nuclear annihalation.

As the US and Soviet Union jockey furiously trying to allocate their finite resources to the most promising weapons, the B-70 emerges as the last gasp of the high speed high altitude manned penetrator school of thought... just as unmanned ICBM's and SAM's render this idea untenable.

Although this book is written entirely as a rather detached factual account, the result is remakably dramatic. The stops and starts and misdirections that our government takes desperately trying to stay "ahead" of the Soviets gives a glimpse of how highly charged this issue was.

The book is well-written and well-researched. Not to be missed.
