This was an excellent book; well researched, well written, and well organized. This book provided a remarkable contrast to "The Cathedral and the Baazar", which, while interesting, was generally poor in its organization and far too biased to take seriously. Although the author is obviously biased towards open sourse, this is the most objective book I've read coming from the open source community. Rosenberg often objectively points out the challenges the open source debate will face legally and philisophically in the near future. This is a great reference book for anyone interested in the open source debate.

Open Source: The Unathorized White Papers is a real contrast to the other more well known book I've read on the subject, The Cathedral and the Bazaar. While Cathedral and Bazaar reads like a series of unorganized USENET posts and random musings, Open Source is very well organized, and professionally written and edited. It contains up to date and accurate information about a range of topics relating to open source, including history, examples of businesses, and licensing.

The book's coverage of licensing is easily the most complete source for understanding a very complex subject. There are so many misconceptions of what licensing means in terms of software that the book is a must read if you either run a software company or are considering investing in one.

The only issue I have with the book is its description of the Java programming language as not having "a community". Being on the board of directors for the local Java User's Group I naturally take issue with that characterization, but for the sake of brevity, as well as sticking to the topic at hand, I will refrain from bringing out the voluminous amount of evidence to the contrary. :-)

For disclosure, I must admit to having met Mr. Rosenberg in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. This isn't hard to do, considering he attends meetings of nearly every technical group I can think of, and is an expert on "people" networking.

Clear Insight into an Emerging Market Force

This book presents an excellant overview of the open source development arena: who is playing, why they are playing, where are they headed, etc. It also provides an excellant grounding in the forces that shaped the movement, as well as the individuals who found themselves leading a movement (when they really thought they were just good programmers).

The book is well written and organized, with interesting side stories that provide a drill-down view of key areas. There is also good discussion of the strategy that is behind the key players in the game today, as well as insights into emerging opportunities.

For anyone who wants a good overview of this revolutionary method of software development, this is it.

An Insider Home Run

Review Date: 2001-03-20
Sometimes a home run is little more than a hit causing an increment tick to a stat, but once in a while it's a powerful work of art that changes the game--Donald Rosenberg's book is the latter. It is, by far, the best book on Open Source written to date.

As someone involved with open source strategies at a large corporation in the computer industry, I found Donald's book to be objective, insightful, and current which reflects an intimate knowledge of someone on the inside.

The level-headedness of this book makes it an essential read for anyone trying to understand the counter-intuitive nature of open source or protect themselves from the FUD, emotions, and convoluted conversations that plague Open Source.

A good starting point on Open Source.

This book is a compilation of essays on open source from the author. He covers the origins and history, as well as a responsible coverage of the licensing models. While there is an over emphasis of Linux, it does talk about various business models that can be used in the open source context. It also includes the text of some of the major open source licenses.

I am considering operating a cabin for winter rentals in Big Bear, California. This book had useful tips and a great overview for how to get started. I especially appreciated the online marketing tips. Looking forward to a future edition to get into more detail about operating a B&B, or in my case, a cabin rental.

The first third of Ms. Painter's book is a reality check for aspiring innkeepers. The middle third is for any innkeeper that needs ideas on how to increase business. The last third, which gets the five star rating, is a well organized overview for the web/internet neophyte like myself. I have already inplemented some of her suggestions and am eagerly awaiting results. Kathy@gracehillbandb

I am thirlled with this new book. Competing titles do cover the basic steps to opening a B&B, but this book takes you way beyond the basic business details and then gives the information you need to understand how to market an inn on the Internet. This is HUGE! This new book is a comprehensive guide for anyone wanting to get "heads-in-the-beds" at a new inn or an exisiting one. I love the secton on increasing Web site traffic and how optimize your Web site from a marketing perspective -- something lacking in the other titles on this hospitality subject.
PROS:
*All the business basics are there in the first few chapters.
*Experienced innkeepers have added tips and hints for success.
*The Internet is explained in great detail, as it relates to innkeeping.
*The marketing on the Internet guidelines are well explained.

CON:
*The author just begins to explain blogging, I'd like to see more on this topic.

Options: Perception and Deception : Position Dissection, Risk Analysis, and Defensive Trading Strategies

Best book for options traders.
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-04
There are basically two types of options books: mathematical
books on valuation that tend to be filled with solutions
for ever more exotic contracts, and books for traders that
go over the practical workings of positions in various
concrete scenarios. Cottle is definitely of the second type.
There's not really much math in it, unless you're intimidated
by three-dimensional graphs. What it does have is an incredible
wealth of insight, from experience, into the tricks and the

exceptions--the rent-a-call, the dividend plays, contract
risk and post-expo deltas, complicated synthetics, the
interrelations between greeks.

That said, what moved me to write a review was to take
exception with a previous reviewer's comment: "No lazy
editing or prose here". The prose is okay, but the editing
is worse than lazy--it's horrendous. Flipping my copy open
at random I come to p.151-152 on Break-Even analysis. Try
finding column 7 in exhibit 4-23, or the supposed arrow in
column 4. It's all a mess. That's an extreme case, but
throughout the text, it's hard enough trying to pick up
the bond options lingo (futures in 32nds but futures-options
in 64ths--all "ticks"; and the different multipliers for
indexes and futures), without having to deal with missing
words, inaccurate references, etc, etc. But ultimately, working
to figure it all out gets you to understand it all the better.

With five years of floor trading as an equity options market
maker, and having read and reread and rereread... Natenberg,
Baird, Hull, Connolly, Cox Ross Rubinstein, Chriss, Taleb--and
others--I'd say Cottle is clearly the best book. That said,
however, I don't know how much use a non-professional--someone
who doesn't manage a large, actively traded book of options--
will get out of it. It should be intellectually rewarding if you
can figure it out. Maybe inspire you to go look for a minimum
wage clerking job in Chicago, NY, Philly, or SF to get abused
for a year or so and then maybe get a badge.

Excellent insights for the seasoned options trader

This book is certainly not a tome to learn about the world of options. The author gets straight to the meat of the attributes of options, and the repercussions of the risk they entail. So, I would certainly not recommend this book to a beginner - confusion and discouragement would likely result. However, once one has read some more straightforward option books, and gotten enough of a handle on options to have a good intuitive grasp of ideas like their volatility, multi-position strategies such as spreads, etc, then this book opens up serious opportunities. I'm very impressed with how the book is organized, the completeness of material, the examples (sometimes real-world based, which adds interest to a potentially dry subject). Much of the meat behind the materials is (rightly) mathemetical, so beginning calculus, and plenty of algebra and a fair amount of analytic geometry are definite prerequisites to really get a good understanding of the underlying concepts of ideas like "the greeks" and all the wonderful (2 and 3D) graphs presented. Lastly, I was very impressed with the accuracy of the data. No lazy editing or prose here. If you are contemplating becoming a "serious" options trader, by all means, read this FIRST. The price is small for the potential impact on your effectiveness in options trading. If you are already a serious trader, based on Cottle's observations (the "Perception and Deception" part of the title is no accident - consider the myriad implications of synthetic positions) I'd still be surprised if you don't learn something. I've read or scanned an estimated 30 books on options. I haven't found a peer for this effort.

Although this original text was written for professional market makers, it proved to be a valuable resource for sophisticated retail investors and hedgers. I therefore created a new book, "Coulda Woulda Shoulda" (available for free download at www.riskdoctor.com) which borrowed about 80% of the original text and added more tools for non-professionals including an email dialogue with a relative novice, spanning 2 months. Most of the strict market making tools have been removed but will be resurrected in book 3; "Taming Your Portfolio" due out later this year.

I read Options: Perception and Deception at least 3-4 times before many of the advanced concepts began to sink in. This is not a book for an options novice; in fact, I would suggest that most people read Natenberg's book on options prior to engaging in this incredible text. While many of the advanced 3-D graphs were beyond my grasp, I particularly liked Cottle's description of "real world" options positions, how he executed them and how he managed them throughout their duration. Of particular interest to many readers should be the concept of "gamma scalping", and the section on wingspreads and adjusting positions. This text is so far beyond "mainstream" options books, that words do not describe how important this book will become.

In Colorado we have the PLACE Exam for Principal licensing. However there are no official study guides for the test. I purchased this book after failing the PLACE and found that the TExES Domains are almost identical to the PLACE. Dr. Wilmore also gave great test taking strategies that were extremely helpful. I used these strategies on the provided practice test, and two PLACE Practice test (one for Principal and one for Superintendent) and scored a passing grade. Then I applied them to the actual PLACE Exam and passed!

Great book for all listening professions

Review Date: 2008-08-10
What struck me as a foreign language teacher were the references to the communication problem between doctor and patient as one analogous to the speakers of two different languages, each attempting (or not) to speak intelligibly to the other. The metaphor was not limited to foreign languages per se, although that came up too, but also to different artistic languages: the one med professor had his students go to an art museum to observe paintings "so they could observe patients". The idea is that the doctor is to bring the same heightened engagement with this "foreign language" of painting to his patient, the same sensation of non-understanding that requires all the compensatory observational zeal one can muster -- so that one will be alert to and comprehend the language of his patient's body, the "different kinds of red". (46) Similarly jazz musician Sikou Sundiata only began to comprehend his doctor when he learned that he, too, was a drummer, a percussive artist who could read the tones of his chest the way the artist could feel the rhythms of his drums. But then there were the direct mentions of foreign language: again Sundiata: "Using medical language with doctors was kind of like using my high school French when I went to Paris." And while some of the doctors encouraged him, helped him with the words he didn't know, others wanted to "leave that kind of talk" to them. (99) Finally, my favorite of these references is Richard McCann's "My Body, My Story", where he actually defines the TWO languages being spoken, one the language of medicine by the doctors, and the other the language of his body, "because what you're hearing is me. It's me." (89) And he compares himself to the doctor's Spanish cleaning lady, to whom the doctor explains how to run the dryer in English, and then, in a gesture of grace, says "Gracias" to her. That line is what strikes me as so important for ALL the listening professions: that one learn to bend out of one's familiarity, acknowledge the "other" as valid, and move, however clumsily, toward communication in a language other than one's own. It is a kind of alertness and engagement, borne of the conviction of the limits of the doctor's own knowledge vis-a-vis his patient's "language" -- i.e. his unique "body narrative" -- that this book wishes to awaken. I find it very touching, I think, because the need for that urgency is so much larger than the needs of good medical practice. It is, in a way, simply the need for grace, for "bending a little my way", for loving one's neighbor, for learning foreign languages in the most extended sense of the metaphor, in order that "grace may abound".

There's more to listening to a patient then just comprehending the words coming out of their mouths. "Patient Listening: A Doctor's Guide" is a guide for doctors to understanding and interpreting patients' complaints. Better listening, claims author Loreen Herwaldt, creates a better bond between doctor and patient, and improves the quality of treatment all around. "Patient Listening" is a recommended read for all physicians and community library health collections.

The Patient's Voice

What a novel and remarkable way to write the patient's voice. Dr. Herwaldt has captured the essence of the many aspects of the clinical encounter by distilling interview transcripts of well regarded published authors into what she calls "found poems". She has created a very useful tool for all of us to teach the patient's voice. Eminently readable, this book should be a must read by all medical students and clinicians. It is truly one of the best texts for informing the clinical encounter that I have read. Its simplicity is its beauty and brilliance.

Patient narratives

Review Date: 2008-04-01
There are an increasing number of physician authors who are sharing their stories, etc. in books and articles in the lay press. To this mix, is Physican Listening, an unique and remarkable book. Dr. Herwaldt has taken patient, some of whom are physicians, stories and transformed the prose into poetry. Hence the listing as editor. The poems are moving as they tell stories of patient experiences with physicians, some good and some not so good. While the book is targeted at medical professionals I truly believe they have just as much relevance to the public at large. Further, the perceived magical physician-patient interaction is somewhat illusory. As some of the poems highlight, physicians are patients too and, like my own personal experience, that does not necessarily give one an advantage. In fact it ought not be. Ideally, and recognzizing that we are all individuals, every patient experience ought to be excellent. It is the hope of the editor that in sharing such stories that we physicians and other health care professionals develop better insight into and empathy for the patient. By this measure this book is a great success.

In closing, and to address any perceived conflict of interest, let me note that Dr. Herwaldt and I work at the same institution but have rarely had any professional interaction, including the focus of this book.

Although this was written as a guide for physicians and educators, there is much to recommend it to a wider readership. These are the actual narratives of illness, transmuted by a deft lyrical touch into "found poems", attributed to the teller as author. Each author has a unique voice, yet the poems reveal as much about the listener as they do about the author. In a poignant dedication page, Dr Herwaldt dedicated this book to those who shared their narratives with her, and then named several who died before the book was published. I have been privileged to hear medical students at the University of Iowa stage these as performance pieces. Those students, and any who attended the readings, have surely been changed by the experience. I know that I was. I would recommend this book to anyone who is intrigued by the interaction between patient and physician.

PATRON SAINTS tells the story of a people thrown into hell on earth after the worst natural disaster in American history and how a professional sports team, of all things, helped them return to normalcy. Using an oral history approach, author Alan Donnes creates a mosaic of voices that take the reader on an emotional journey from the depths of despair to the triumph of victory, not just on the playing field (which the Saints did), but in the hearts and minds of the people. More powerful than WE ARE MARSHALL or REMEMBER THE TITANS, PATRON SAINTS is the most inspiring story to come out of the Crescent City since Katrina and may well be the most inspiring sports story ever told. In the words of everyone from a 12 year old boy to the President of The United States and from players to fans, PATRON SAINTS gives us all a reason to cheer. We dare you to read about the team's and THE PEOPLE's return to the Superdome and NOT tear up. This book reminds us all why sports is so important in our lives. PATRON SAINTS is for the serious football fan and, maybe even more so for those who wonder why cities fight to get and keep professional sports franchises. Read PATRON SAINTS and see how the SAINTS gave New Orleans a reason to BELIEVE.

PATRON SAINTS is currently being developed as a major motion picture to be filmed on location in New Orleans.

This is more of a compilation than a novel. I bought this for my husband, who is not normally much of a reader, but he couldn't put this down. He read alot of it out loud to me, because he was so interested in the stories. I finally told him that I would read it myself when he was finished, which I did, and really enjoyed although I am not a football fan. Who couldn't be a fan that year? It tells the story from perspectives of all sides, and tells of the inspiration that came from unexpected places and inspired unexpected people.
This is definitely a must read for New Orleanians, who lived this, and understand what that Saints season meant to us. But also for others who weren't there and don't live here to understand why it meant so much.

Amazing Account

This book gives an amazing and accurate account of how the New Orleans Saints inspired and motivated the City of New Orleans and its surrounding parishes. As someone who went to that Monday night game against the Atlanta Falcons in the newly renovated Superdome, I cannot begin to describe the emotions I and many others experienced that night. Seeing the Saints run onto the field was my "Katrina moment." It was then that I knew things would be alright. The Superdome had always been a place to go to have fun. It was not that horrible place seen by so many people after Hurricane Katrina. To see the Saints return to the Dome turned a negative back into a positive for me. It was just one more step on the path back to normal.

That night my brother and I parked the car and began walking to the Dome. The walk took us through neighborhoods that had not yet been gutted. It took us past buildings that had water lines almost over my head. I thought about the people who walked that same path to the Dome after the hurricane hoping for refuge from the devastation. I got a lump in my throat and began to cry. This walk, however, was different. This walk was positive and determined. It was prideful, and it had purpose. We were walking to the Dome to bring it back and to bring our Saints back. Fans walking to the Dome were not just fans, we were family. We were family members from all over the New Orleans area who were brought together to welcome home a team many of us believed might never return. That night we were going to show the world that New Orleans - our home - would also return. We needed something to believe in. The Saints gave us that inspiration. We believed in them, and they seemed to believe in us. It was a powerful year.

Though I cannot even begin to describe the true emotions felt during that football season, this book does a great job. I loved reading how the players and coaches felt and how the team was just as inspired by us as we were of them. Just like a previous reviewer, I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever pulled for the underdog. It's a remarkable read.

Told through interviews with everyone from Quarterback Drew Brees to fans of the Saints who lived in New Orleans during the rebuilding of the city, Patron Saints covers one of the greatest, TRUE underdog stories in all of sports. The interviews with Saints players and coaches are fascinating, and provide a unique insight into what actually went on behind the scenes during the unlikely Cinderella season. But what truly makes this book special are the interviews with the fans; real people who convey how important this team was to the residents of post-Katrina New Orleans. Patron Saints gives the reader a "view from the gallery;" a chance to share in how the Saints' winning season was able to uplifit the spirits of an entire city where so much had gone wrong.

There are very few true sports stories this great (that of "Rudy" Reuttiger and the Marshall football program come to mind). But this book isn't just for Saints fans, or even football fans; it's for anyone who has ever rooted for the underdog.

This book was very helpful to me. It helped make up my mind about what career path to pursue. The authors give insight into the history and future of the PA profession. They give numerous charts and graphs showing statistics on the PA profession as compared to other professions. I especially found it helpful that they compared the Nurse Practitioner to the Physician Assistant, which are two very closely related professions. Before having read this book, I was pretty sure I wanted to become a PA. After reading the book, I further considered the possibility of the NP career. The book definitely is a must read for prospective PA's. I don't think that it would be as enjoyable for current PA's or current PA students though. The information is a bit outdated as far as how many PA programs are accredited as of today and so on but that's to be expected. However, overall, I do recommend this book very much.

Utilizing this book for a course in Health Delivery Systems bring the PA concept clearly into focus for PA students. Practicing Mid-level practitioners, healtcare manageres and physicians will gain a greater understanding of the roots, current utilization and future possibilities of the Physician Assistant. Well-researched and written by two "experts" in the field of Physician Assistant history, utilization and economics. Recommend highly for personal collection or booklist.

The most clearly written and comprehensive book about PAs

This book provided a fascinating and educational read about the Physician Assistant (PA) profession. It included information about history, development, current status, educational process, clinical roles, legal aspects, financial aspects and future direction. The book was remarkably comprehensive, clear and concise, citing hundreds extensively researched studies. As a graduate student in PA studies, the book was of special interest to me. However, the thorough exploration of the dynamic relationships of PAs with other health care professionals and health care organizations leads me to believe that the book would be of interest to a myriad of persons involved in health services delivery and management.

The quintessential resource for the PA Profession

Clear, concise and interesting reading. The authors have compiled the most recent data on the profession and present it in a thoughtful and logical fashion. A "must-read" for prospective and current PA students, graduate PAs, physicians and administrators. This book will answer ALL the questions.

This was a great referance tool for most of the abbreviations used in aviation... only dissapointment was that there were no airport codes in the book!

This book has helped me win many beers on several overnights by stumping the "Most Experienced" pilots online. Keep 'em coming!! I'm looking forward to future editions.

Finally a small reference guide with thousands of aviation abbreviations.

Now I can learn and impress my "expert" friends with my new knowledge. The terms PAPI and CAVU for example, were easily deciphered by me recently when someone asked what the exact meanings were. Also, the weather section is full of abreviations that I now can understand pronto. I would recommend this book for any person in aviation.

The MOST important book for every pilot's flight case!

Review Date: 1998-06-05
This book is comprehensive, yet small enough to fit perfectly in your flight kit or case. The first chapter explains the meanings of thousands of initials and abbreviations. The second chapter makes weather briefings easy to read. Chapter 4-7 includes additional codes and symbol (transponder codes, military designations, slang, and memory joggers). This is a one of a kind book which every pilot should carry in their flight case!

The starting point to select, install, operate or control specific Machinery is to learn and understand about its principles and technology. I am an Electronics Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Oil and Gas Industries. As a result I have been involved with Chemical and Mechanical Engineering issues related with both gas and steam turbines in a day to day basic. This handy reference has proven most useful and time saving when in need of information or a shortcut to solve problems.

This "quick-reference" guide offers you authoritative information on the operating characteristics, efficiencies, design features, reliability, and maintenance of Steam Turbines. Absolutely a must have if you work with steam turbines.

We as users of the PSM with years of experience in the quality and measurements world tend to over complicate the measurement system we develop. This book is a yardstick and is a good tool to ground you when you are creating the measurements. It keeps your mind in the more simple and effective road to resolving the issues. Remember the old saying, "Keep it simple stupid (KISS)!"; this one helps guide you to accomplishment of this goal.

This is a good solid presentation of the subject that gives a good overview of the several types of approaches to measurement. While I would prefer that the subject matter also focused on software engineering as well, it does a good job of what it was created to cover.

This is a good read for anyone thinking about employing metrics for software projects. I have read several books and articles on metrics, software and program managment, in the last 6 months and this one of the few which was worth reading. Text is easy to read and the message and methods are presented in a straight forward manner. No, you will not find any amazing breakthoughs in software project managment in this book. What you will find is a good foundation for adding metrics which add value to software program management.

There is a wealth of material available from the PSM site, including the PSM Insight application and PSM Guidebook. However this book is not redundant because it is structured as a clearly written introduction to practical software measurement, that includes excellent guidance for implementing it into your organization. In addition, the 304 pages that comprise this book manages to convey the information contained in the existing PSM documentation, and does so much more succinctly.

I found the most valuable parts of this book to be the clearly described measurement model, and the way the authors distinguish between data that is useful to projects and organizational data collection and analysis. This material places PSM in context and is a sound starting point for an organizational SQA initiative.

The case studies reinforces the mechanics of PSM, and also contain advice and pointers for implementing enterprise-wide measurement. Although I've been following the PSM initiative almost since its inception and have read all of the copious materials available, I still gained much from this book. If you're establishing an SQA function or striving for CMM level 4 or above you'll find this book invaluable. The URLs provided will lead to even more material, including a free Windows-based software tool that fully supports the practical software measurement process.

The Standard for Software Measurement Programs

I would rate this book ****** if it were possible. If you are looking for material on how to start a "software metrics program", look no further. This is the ultimate reference on software measurement initiatives. The PSM method is compatible with the CMMI (Measurement & Analysis Process Area) and the foundation for the ISO/IEC 15939 standard. All of the authors are recognized authorities in software measurement and process improvement. Dr. Barry Boehm (COCOMO author) has written the foreword. The PSM process is sponsored by the DoD and the U.S. Army. The book itself is comprehensive, well-written, and easy to read. It provides ready-to-use templates such as "Measurement Construct Template", "Project Measurement Plan Outline", and "Data Verification Checklist". Chapter outline:

1 - Measurement: Key Concepts and Practices
2 - Measurement Information Model
3 - Plan Measurement
4 - Perform Measurement
5 - Analysis Techniques
6 - Evaluate Measurement
7 - Establish and Sustain Commitment
8 - Measure for Success
Appendix A - Measurement Construct Examples
Appendix B - Information System Case Study
Appendix C - Synergy Integrated Copier Case Study

Note: Appendix A provides 14 detailed, complete examples of measurement constructs ("metrics"). Appendixes B and C provide 2 comprehensive case studies (approximately 60 pages).

It would require at least a 2-day workshop to address all the information provided by this book (probably at 10 times its price). You can't afford to miss it if you are more than casually interested in software measurement. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
