Great book if you are interested in implementing programs into your kitchen. The author is a chef at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston, TX. He talks about how he motivates his staff and the programs he has in place in his kitchen. Really great motivator for an inspiring chef.

As a chef in the industry over the course of 27 years, Chef Carroll displays his passion, leadership, integrity, and most of all, his reverence to the profession. He is committed to passing on his gifts and talents to others as well as himself. I commend him on his written works, but also seeing his operation, it's also his life works. Chef Carroll leads by example and shows each and all "servant leadership."

I just had the pleasure of reading Chef Carroll's book and also of visiting inside of his kitchens, personally. Let me say that I hold myself a good judge of cleanliness and organization. Having been a Sous Chef for State Dinners at the White House for many years and also in the US Navy as a Chef for 21 years - Chef Carroll takes top toque on me! It was clearly evident to anyone that the items he shows and teaches in his book - are evident and working in real life. There is no fantasy here.

Also, one could not help but notice that the US Culinary Olympic Team trains at River Oaks Country Club, where Chef Carroll leads as the Executive Chef. I have had the honor of watching two of Chef Carrolls own Chefs in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg and Erfurt, Germany. This was during the World Culinary Cup and Culinary Olympics. Chef Carroll, I am so proud to know that team members work here with you! What an amazing leader he is.

I can't say enough of the fact that here is the perfect book for chef students to be studying in all culinary schools. Leadership is not management. Holding oneself to inspiring younger team members, not expecting respect each morning - but earning it each day - here are the hallmarks of true Steven Covey leadership.

As a former Executive Chef to the President of the United States of America at Camp David - I would highly recommend this book at the top of my list. I would love to see it twice as thick and hardback - like a textbook!

Sincerely,

This book is a no-nonsense, straight forward handbook on leadership. Chef Carroll is clearly an expert in his field but what surprised me was how his leadership experience in a pro kitchen carries over to different business disciplines. While individual examples were specific to the culinary field they are easily transferable to almost any business situation. His focus on intensity, staff development, and delivering a winning product provides timless lessons and a strong foundation for new leaders. I pass on many "leadership" books, but this is a great keeper to compliment a leadership library for any young manager looking to take it to the next level.

Unless you are in the restaurant industry, comprehending what it takes to be successful is quite difficult. Certainly there is a need to run an operation profitably, and that in itself can be a monumental task, but before profit comes a focused, well run kitchen. When it operates efficently, watching a kitchen in the heat of service can be very similar to focusing on an orchestra under the direction of a competent conductor. When it operates poorly, the kitchen resembles a cross between Dante's Inferno and the gates of hell.

A well built team of serious culinary professionals, focused on food and service will always lead to a financially successful business. At the head of this team you will always find a confident, well-versed, competent, compassionate, quality driven leader.

Chef Carroll, a highly accomplished culinarian shows us how he has been able to make his mark as one of the finest cooks in the country while systematically running some of the finest clubs in America.

This book is truly inspirational, easy to understand, well-organized and a perfect addition to every serious culinary professionals library.

Teaching can become a grind. When that happens it can grind you down. Don't let it happen to you. Seek out the pearls of fun, humorous insights and pleasure that occur each day, if you look for them. This book is full of really clever cartoons - the kind you see in better magazines - about the teaching experience. I use these cartoons for my bulletin board, to remind me that teaching can be fun, for my intra school memos, to make sure they're read, and for my Powerpoint presentations to get the audience interested in what I have to say.

The author is not only a fine cartoonist but an astute observer of teachers and teaching. As a teacher myself, I never knew that the profession could be seen as an endless source of humor. Now I approach each day with a new perspective on the profession. I have placed a few of the cartoons on my bulletin board and they attract staff members. The kids like them too. I really enjoyed this book.

I am a teacher and I think that this book should be required reading every day before a teacher enters the school building. Effective teaching is all about the right attitude and this delightful compilation of cartoons about the profession, will help you look at daily teaching situations in a new way. These 'New Yorker' type cartoons are really funny and display a knowledge of the teaching profession. Each cartoon is a gem. I have placed two of them on my class bulletin board. Reading this book has helped me stop taking myself so seriously and start relaxing and enjoying what I love to do best...teach!

Reading Dr Guillory's book, I found myself looking at a totally new arena in the workplace. Many concepts and thoughts that can improve employees relations at any level in an organization. Much, much more then the trendy books recommended by most of corporate America today. A "must read" book for those looking for the missing connection.

Spirituality: A New Paradigm for the Workplace

In THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS, Thomas Kuhn suggested that the evolution of science was marked more by epistemological shifts than linear developments over time that reflected unchanging truths and practices. After Kuhn's analysis, scientists would never again be able to do "business as usual." William Guillory's work represents a similar epistemological shift, and like Kuhn's REVOLUTIONS has the potential to change the way that business is envisioned and actualized, literally challenging the business of "business and usual," and introducing an element that has yet to be fully explored in the numerous works that articulate transformative business practices. The future of business, for Guillory, is defined by one idea/practice: spirituality. SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE: A GUIDE FOR ADAPTING TO THE CHAOTICALLY CHANGING WORKPLACE is William Guillory's contribution to the emerging conversation of how to effectively transform business and implement practices that will be responsive to, and inclusive of, empowerment, diversity, and organizational coherence. Guillory challenges some of our most sacred beliefs about difference and division: self and other, individuality and collectivism, and of course, spirituality and materialism. It is a book that offers a new vision of leadership, one that values intuition as much as observation, and the spiritual as much as the material. William Guillory's vision is, indeed, integrative, and reflects his own personal challenges and transformations. Guillory is the CEO and founder of Innovations Consulting International, and a highly sought after authority on facilitating organizational transformation, managing diversity, and creating contexts for individual empowerment. His work with organizational change and diversity led naturally to his own transformative self-reflections, reflections that moved him beyond the material concerns of a career to the spiritual possibilities of exploring his own deeply embedded life interests. He writes in the prologue of SPIRITUALITY of an experience in October of 1985 that changed both his life and his mind. "Words flowed through me at a rate with which I cold hardly keep pace. There were phrases and concepts I had never heard before, pouring into my consciousness." Those words and phrases, he relates, challenged one of our culture's most sacred division, the separation of the spiritual and the material. Guillory believes that this division needs to be understood, addressed, and ultimately healed if organizations are going to be able to adapt to accelerated change and potential crises. The multiple ways of addressing this division are revealed throughout the book, in both the titles and the contents of each chapter. Chapter one discusses "The Living Organization," and offers a biological metaphor for understanding organizational evolution. Chapter two "Spirituality as a source of wisdom," addresses directly the main focus of the book and offers both definitions of spirituality and examples of how it is reflected in specific business practices. Chapter three, "People--The Only Sustainable Competitive Advantage," discusses the difficulties of personal transformation within organizational contexts that privilege material over human resources, and illustrates how individuals can successfully empower themselves to become agents of change. Chapter four, "Service--An Unconditional Commitment to Others," points to the value of challenging and redefining our conception of ourselves in relation to others, and the potential that committing one's self to service can have for both individual and organizational transformation. Chapter five, "Organizational Self-Awareness--Know Thyself," explores the critical connection between communication and culture that defines the problems and possibilities of organizational change and development in an increasingly diverse and global business economy. Chapter six, Wisdom--Your Soul Connection," illustrates the importance intuition and personal self-reflection for overcoming limiting conditions and actualizing performance potential. Chapter seven, "The New Leadership--Spirituality," explores the critical need for visionary, transformative, and spiritual leadership, and how these approaches reflect both normative principles and practical outcomes. In the final chapter, "The Future--A Call for Action," Guillory challenges us to rethink the world of work and our place in it, and the impact of our personal and professional works on the world in which we live. Guillory paradigmatic shift invites us to consider what David Bohm described as the "implicate order" or reality, the many diverse and seemingly divergent principles and practices that implicate us in each other's lives and, ultimately, in the planet itself. Although the titles of Guillory's chapters suggest at first glance an exploration into the realm of the esoteric and the transcendent, the chapters themselves reveal concrete and down to earth discussions and examples of spirituality at work in the work place. The book is very accessibly written, and does an excellent job touching on many of the emerging theoretical discussions of organizational change and development without being "theory laden." The use of personal experiences and narratives also serve to make the book extremely practical in terms of presenting concrete examples of spiritual practices. Each of the chapters also offers exercises and measurement instruments for facilitating self-reflexive explorations of spirituality in the workplace and in our lives. While at first glance this may seem like a strange mixture of science and metaphysics, a kind of "lichert scale spirituality," the exercises if take seriously serve as provocative catalysts for further understanding, and recognizing the necessity of a paradigmatic shift toward the spiritual. Guillory suggests that the economics of self-interest and personal gain have placed the planet in a tenuous position, one requiring radical change and personal transformation. SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE offers an alternative paradigm for re-conceptualizing and re-creating the way we do business with each other, with the planet, and with ourselves. The articulation of a new paradigm is perhaps the most important contribution that this book makes to the literature on organization change and development. Unlike many of the texts in this genre, however, SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE forces us to delve deeper into the mechanisms of culture and consciousness that undergird our business organizations and economic institutions. This is an important and provocative book that will makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how organizational change and personal transformation will be the keys to business competitiveness and development in the 21st century.

William Guillory has hit the nail squarely on the head. It is about time that someone has been able to give solid thoughts as to how one can adapt to the ever changing workplace, while maintaining and enhancing spiritual values.

With consolidation being the main focus of companies across North America, the pressures and anxiety are at extreme levels. William Guillory gives employees and executives a fresh insight into dealing with these changes.

This is a must read for anyone who is experiencing change or chaos in the workplace. It is a must read for everyone!

Spirituality in the Workplace is a truly inspirational book that encourages individuals and organizations to incorporate their values and spirituality into their work endeavers. The powerful ideas inside this book show how we can align the spiritual, mental and physical components of our lives to become more fully functional in the workplace. Although the focus is on values and individual development, Bill also makes a strong business case for using these principles to create excellence within an organization. His real life examples and creative insights make this a interesting and motivating read.

With the increasing trend to introspection in Western society and inquiry into sources of personal meaning in all areas of one's life, it is not surprising that the place of spirituality in the workplace is also being examined. The past 5 years have seen a number of books appear on the subject; many of them fall into a couple of categories: they are broad and fuzzy surveys of the topic, or they try to define what spirituality SHOULD look like. This is inherently flawed because spirituality is a manifestation of personal belief and a reflection of corporate culture. Dr. Guillory's book is one of the very few I have seen to take a different, and I feel proper, approach. First, Dr. Guillory is by training a chemist and yet he tackles a nebulous topic like spirituality with ease and familiarity. He effectively applies a scientific rigor to treatment of the subject but never becomes preachy or inaccessable. The volume is clearly written, well organized, and has a VERY strong take-away for the reader, who can complete exercises in the book to the formation and manifestation of a personal belief system and apply that to a work setting. Throughout the process, Dr. Guillory seems to accompany and guide the reader through the exercises. It is as if he is writing from within a spiritual context, rather than standing on the outside looking in. This volume has a wonderful mix of information and applications, as well as illustration of schematic and thought-models, that serve as a springboard for further inquiry. I found this book stayed in my head long after I had closed the cover. The examples of how corporate leaders had developed their own corporate spirituality were inspiring and believable. In conclusion, I loved this book because it was practical, direct, entertaining, and enlightening. It is a roadmap and guidebook that others can use to navigate through a murky topic with ease.

This is a well written, balanced guide for improving your interpersonal skills. Although written for healthcare professionals, it is very readable and anyone could pick it up and enjoy it.
I have been very pleased with the improvements I have made in my life and my practice since I have read this book. It is not religious or anything. It clearly defines what we need to do so that we will be liked, that's all. Then, it gives example stories. Some of the stories are really funny, too!
It is well written, fast, easy reading and very sage.
(I review it anonymously now so no one knows the secret of my transformation and how poorly I used to relate to other people! I plan to give this book to several nerdy colleagues.)

Dr. Diering provides the sensitivity, compassion and passion to which every heathcare provider (and patient) should aspire. This book is beautifully written and should be required reading for every medical student, physician, nurse, EMT and everyone else working with patients. If everyone took this book to heart, patient satisfaction scores would sore. Our healthcare is the best in the world but without taking the time to listen and respond, we fall short. This book will not only change the way we practice but also the way our patients respond. Finally, if you want to reduce medical malpractice suits, read this book.

Love Your Patients!: Essential Behaviors That Enrich The Lives Of Patients & Caregivers by Dr. Scott Louis Diering (a practicing emergency medicine physician in Maryland, where he is also a Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland medical school) persuasively argues that it is love, respect, and humility which lie at the heart of the successful medical caretaker whether that caretaker be a doctor, a nurse, or a paraprofessional. This thesis is wonderful illustrated by a series of true life stories. Of special note is the final section titled "The Art of Agape". Enhanced for the reader with extensive references and a "user friendly" index, Love Your Patients! should be mandatory reading for the students of every medical school and nursing college in the country.

The book exceeded all my expectations as a comprehensive discourse on Flip Chip technologies. It is extremely difficult to write a book that caters equally well to students and professionals alike, but the author seems to have succeeded in the task. For professionals in the field of electronic packaging, the book is an invaluable and comprehensive resource whether to refer a quick topic, or to study a concept in detail. It is also very up-to-date, complete with current international papers. For students, the fluid style makes good reading and the important concepts are explained thoroughly. Finally, the informations are very useful, and sometimes even lead to contemporary research issues.

As someone who was in the industry, and currently working at the University of Oxford - I can say that the book works great for both. Altogether, an excellent and timely book for electronic packaging people!

A Great Value to the Packaging Engineers and Researchers

It is my pleasure to see our friend, John Lau, having another book (this is John's 12th book) published in the area of electronic packaging. The flip chip technology was developed more than 3 decades ago. However, due to the cost and reliability issues, flip chips were not yet widely adopted in the packaging industry. With the recent development of underfills and low-cost substartes, the aforementioned issues have been substantially improved. The present book appears just in time to promte the flip chip technologies to the packaging industry once again.

The 16 chapters in this book cover a wide spectrum of flip chip technologies. Following the introductions in Chapters 1 and 2, it is a pleasure to find a full chapter focused on lead-free solders. This is an emerging area in electronic packaging and should deserve special attention. Chapter 4 is another important subject in this book. Without high-density PCBs and substrates, the applications of flip chips would become very difficult. Chapter 5 introduces flip chips with conductive adhesives. This is mainly for chip-on-glass (COG) applications. The next three chapters provide abundant information regarding underfill encapsulation. In particular, the analyses and discussion for imperfect underfills are rather unique. After a brief chapter on the thermal management of flip chip on board, a comprehensive coverage on wafer-level packaging is provided. This is another highlight in this book. Several wafer-level chip scale packages (WLCSP) are introduced and the technlogy of wafer-level metallization and redistribution is discussed in depth. Chapters 11 and 12 concern two special topics: via-in-pad (VIP) and Direct Rambus (RIMM), respectively. The provided information is rather new. The next three chapters are focused on three forms of plastic ball grid array (PBGA) packages. Although two of them use wire bonding as the chip-level interconnect, they serve as good references for the comparison with solder-bumped flip chip PBGA packages. The last chapter of this book gives plenty of experimental results from failure analysis. This information is very helpful for understanding the failure mechanism of flip chip assemblies.

In summary, the present monograph is a very good reference book on low-cost flip chip technologies. The information is unique and up-to-date. I enjoy this book a lot and find it very helpful to my research work. It is a great value to the packaging engineers and researchers!

Low Cost Flip Chip Technologies

Review Date: 2000-03-13
As the electronics industry is being driven by market demand to produce multi-functional, high-performance, miniature, and light-weight products, flip chip technology has been identified a key enabler, as well as a core technology for future electronics products. Although there have been numerous studies on this subject, they are scattered in different sources of literature and thus make it difficult for any one who would like to obtain a general, systematic, and comprehensive understanding of this technology.

This book comes just in time to fulfill the need and, in my opinion, is a best-in-class in the area of flip chip technologies for organic boards. Its 16 chapters cover a full spectrum from theory to application and provide scientists and engineers with an excellent, most up-to-date reference in flip chip technologies.

The book discusses major applications of flip chip technologies in direct chip attachment, wafer level CSP and plastic BGA, together with numerous examples of packages either being widely used in industries or emerging as a trend in the future. Each technology is discussed in detail from various aspects, such as design, PCB requirements, manufacturing, material, thermal management, failure analysis, and reliability, along with comprehensive references of literature. In fact, most of them represent previous work done by the author, who is not only a leading expert in electronic packaging industry but an active author of more than 10 books in the area of electronic packaging.

I found this book extremely useful to my research in electronic packaging technologies and thus highly recommend to whomever might need to understand and apply this technology to their work or studies.

Review Date: 2000-04-07
I found this book an excellent one for engineers in research and development department, such as the packaging R/D team I am associated with. For an R/D engineer, this is a perfect reference book to get a brief idea about relevant technologies in every aspect of flip chip packages and the advantage/drawback of one technology over others. This is important as for most of the development teams wafer level packages and flip chip technologies are still under development or in the trial run stage. Further, as cost is always the primary concern for essentially all the packages, including, of course, flip chip packages, this book does offer a lot of kits and alternatives for R/D engineers to choose which material and process technology should be the most suitable for them to develop. This book also offers many types of new flip chip and wafer level packages, along with abundant up-to-date references in each chapters, that can stimulate a good engineer and trigger new ideas for either new improvement or inventing new packages for their specific applications.

On the other hand, it is also a very suitable reference book for a packaging class in the graduate school level. For students with material or chemistry/chemical engineering background, they can very much understand two-thirds of the contents. As to students with mechanical or electrical engineering background, with instructor's guidance, they can also grasp this part of knowledge with reasonable effort. For the rest one-third of contents that involves the use of the theory of fracture mechanics and finite element methods, most students should also be able to understand the spirit without much difficulty through the instructor's explanation.

I strongly recommend it to everyone who is working in electronic packaging and interconnetions. I am sure you will find it useful!

Mr. Eisenmann has compiled his years of "hands on" experience into this book. Although the information contained within the book applies to most types of rotating machinery, it's focused on high speed process machinery with journal type bearings. I've read dozens of vibration analysis books and none even comes close to this one. It is a must have for any vibration analysis who needs to understand non rolling element bearing type machines.

Excellant !!!!!!

I'm a working mom with very little time. The topic of this book appealed to me - how to be successful and reach goals by doing a little bit each day. Maxwell's twelve suggestions for daily goals make you definitely think hard about how to focus your energy. I found I could focus on a lot of change using his program and suggestions. You can incorporate these goals into a busy life.

The audiobook format was key for me. Audiobooks help me read when busy. The narrator had a nice voice, and the sound quality was very good. I highly recommend this to busy moms everywhere!

A great guide for changing your life!

You won't be disappointed by John C. Maxwell's helpful guide to time management. Maxwell's strategies will work for even the most time crunched people. Maxwell's program teaches people how to prioritize 12 things that truly matter and how to follow through daily in these areas. It is easy to feel as though you lack the free time to affect any change in your life, but Maxwell shows how devoting small amounts of time in the proper way can make all the difference. The audiobook version seems especially helpful for the book's audience - people with little free time. You can listen while stuck in traffic or cleaning the house, and figure out how to reorganize your life at the same time. Narrator Lew Grenville is an experienced performer and you might recognize his voice from National Geographic or the Discovery Channel. His voice is authoritative, clear, and pleasant to listen to, and meshes well with the subject matter. At a playing time of 3.5 hours, busy people should find this audiobook well worth their (multi-tasking) time.

Short but powerful book on making the most of each day!

The basic premise of this book is that the secret to your success is determined by your daily agenda.

The author has a list of 12 areas to focus on daily that he believes are critical to success. He calles them the "Daily Dozen." They are:

1. Attitude
2. Priorities
3. Health
4. Family
5. Thinking
6. Commitment
7. Finances
8. Faith
9. Relationships
10. Generosity
11. Values
12. Growth

He spends a chapter on each of the Daily Dozen. For each, he notes what decision he has made in each area. As an example, for "attitude," his decision is "I am going to keep a positive attitude and use it to influence others." Then he provides suggestions on how to incorporate the items critical to success into your daily life.

He makes the great point that what you become is the result of what you do today. The only way to change your life is to change what you do daily.

This is a great little book that packs a powerful punch!

I've been working on geochemistry and hydro-geochemistry for the last three years and this book represent an "easy-to-follow" compendium of the most usual problems and situations that you can find on field. The author's explanations to some problems are quite ingenious and help to solve, in a practical way, most of the difficulties that you can find in real natural systems.

A Fun Approach to a Complicated Subject

The authors have managed to take a subject that can be dry and intimidating and make it readable and enjoyable. I have been in the consulting business as a hydrogeologist for 20 years, and found that I needed to review "the basics" due to a career change to Water Resources. I found the book to be well organized, well written, and especially useful were all of the examples provided. I think it would be a very good book for students (those just starting out) and for those, like me, who need to review subjects, such as "aquifer hydraulics." And, the chapter "How to Get Along with Driller's" should be mandatory reading for all students of geology/hydrogeology/engineering.

This book should be required reading by every professional entering the field of hydrogeology - especially those with limited experience in groundwater science. the authors present the material in an easy to read format as though they were mentoring entry level geologists. A job well done.

I've been working as a geologist for an environmental firm specializing in UST remediation for about six months. Having been working in a tangentally related field for six years, I needed a quick refresher. This book is providing that refresher - it will also prove an excellent reference for years to come. I found especially useful the portion on slug testing - my old college texts discuss slug testing but in a highly theoretical and impractical manner.

This handbook has all of the fundamentals someone needs to know to understand not only the basics of manufacturing, but also the extensive jargon and many interdependent disciplines involved. If you are learning about the industry, this is a good guide. In the interest of full disclosure, I did contribute to the handbook - see the supply chain section!

This hanbdbook was comprehensively written. Contained many fundamental analyses and methodologies that manufacturing engineers may need to know. The author did not assume extensive mathematics or industrial know-hows in preparing this book. I recommend it for all manufacturing engineers as their personal work bible.

This new handbook from McGraw-Hill sets the bar high in the wealth of information on manufacturing engineering in the over 60 chapters it contains. Each chapter has been carefully selected for it relevant content in today's global manufacturing environment, and it is clear the author of each chapter is an expert in their field. It is easy to read, and while you want to at first read it from cover to cover, it is organized to allow quick access to just the right information needed. Mr. Geng has done a fantastic job of bringing these experts together to produce a single-source reference. I highly recommend it to anyone, engineers or technicians, desiring to learn and apply the latest manufacturing technology.

I really enjoyed this well written summary of Marcus Allen's life and his extraordinary career in football. If you are at all interested in football, this book would be a great choice. He starts from the beginning telling us about his family and his hometown. He then describes his life as a high school football player. He goes on to talk about the transitions he had to make on the field from defensive back to quarterback and then to running back later on in his career. Marcus really goes in to depth when he describes his years at U.S.C and the heisman trophy. He emphasizes his dedication towards his health and the team. Marcus says in the book that playing backup to Charles White helped him more because he got to see greatness right before his eyes in Charles. Charles describes the felling of being drafted to the Oakland Raiders. Marcus shows his dislike towards the teams manager Al Davis and describes conflicts between the two. Marcus goes into great detail of the games and the situations that occur off the field on both the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs. It is very interesting to see the relationship between Marcus Allen and Mr. and Mrs.OJ Simpson. He talks about the OJ trial and how he handled it.

I REALLY ENJOYED READING THIS. MARCUS DOES A GOOD JOB DESCRIBING HIS CAREER WITH THE RAIDERS AND CHIEFS. HIS CRITICISM OF AL DAVIS AND RAIDER ORGANIZATION IS EXTREMELY INTRIGUING. ALSO INTERESTING IS HIS DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE OJ MURDER TRIAL AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH OJ AND HIS WIFE. THIS IS WELL WORTH YOUR TIME.
A MUST READ.

He shows an amazing insight into what really goes on in the dirty world of american football. To the specifically vindictive nature of Al Davis towards Marcus, to the heartfelt news which so totally devasted him upon learning of the revelation of O.J.!! Written we a great deal of intelligence almost as if he was a best selling novelist. Definitely makes you support the Chiefs whenever they play the Raiders, even though i support the Seahawks. Maybe now Marcus has retired he will put pen to paper more often, I certaintly will purchase any of his material.

Excellent insight to the Raider organization!

After reading this book, I was amazed at the things that went on between Al Davis and Marcus. How Marcus stayed in Los Angeles that long amazes me. This book covers Marcus' life before football, during high school, at USC and the heisman, and being drafted by the Raiders and then ending up at Kansas City. Marcus talks about the O.J. fiasco and how it changed his life. This book is excellent for any football fan and shines light on the dark side of being a Raider.

This is not your typical Professional Jock Worship book, primarily because (1) very little of the narrative is taken up with descriptions of individual games or plays, (2) Carlton Stowers is an excellent writer who portrays Marcus well, and (3) Marcus himself is an intelligent and thoughtful person who has had a fascinating life to date.

The real heroes of this book are Marcus' parents, Harold (Red) and Gwen Allen, who put the necessary time and effort into providing their children with the integrity that has made Marcus successful.

This is a book of contrasts and conflicts, the first of which are with Al Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders. Marcus despises Al and is candid in describing his reasons. Anyone who is not familiar with Al Davis might think Marcus is exaggerating, but those who are familiar with him will find the criticism reasonable, if not understated. Corroboration for his descriptions of Al's eccentricities may be found in "Slick: The Silver and Black Life of Al Davis" by Mark Ribowsky [ISBN: 0-02-602500-0], a highly entertaining biography that is now out of print but may be available through a used-book service.

The other interesting contrast is that between Marcus and his friend O.J. Simpson. As Marcus described Nicole Simpson's death and the subsequent murder trial, I kept asking how these two men, similar in so many ways, could have ended up so differently. As I said at the outset, the real heroes of the book are Marcus' parents.
