Should be on the shelves of any library catering to food professionals.Review Date: 2008-04-02
Useful; lots of off-the-beaten-path drinksReview Date: 2008-03-17
Ever wonder what the difference is between Irish whiskey and Scotch whiskey or a lambic and a lager? Or whether that bottle of tequila is still drinkable? Do you know what V.S.O.P. stands for? Want to brush up on your skills as a sommelier? Whether throwing a fantastic party or tending bar professionally, this is an indispensable reference to keep on hand.
Ms. Mellema provides a rundown on setting up a bar complete with lists of how much and what kinds of alcohol and accoutrements to buy, and offers tips on management including how to obtain a liquor license and the different types of insurance policies the prospective bar owner is likely to encounter. But the real meat of the book is the nearly comprehensive listing of drink recipes. While I do have to take off points because there's no recipe for a mojito (there is a recipe for caipirinhas, though), I was really impressed with how many off-the-beaten-path drinks are included. I ran several of the more difficult drink requests past my favorite local bartender and they weren't even in her book!
But although I've discovered several new drinks I love and learned a few new toasts, my favorite part of this book is definitely the final chapter in which bartenders talk about their favorite (and most hated) things about their profession. I have a lot more sympathy for bartenders now, and I won't be ordering frozen drinks anymore!
The Professional Bartender's HandbookReview Date: 2008-02-17
Mallema offers her readers an indepth, but straight-forward, look into the bar business, whether that be in opening a bar or club or in setting up the at-home bar. It's a great read for both the beginning bartender and the entrepreneur.
Useful information abounds when it comes to the different types of beers, liquors and wines, pairing wine with food, using bartending tools, slicing fruit and pouring an accurate shot. There's information on how much liquor to buy for a party to how to determine profits when purchasing an alcohol establishment. Entrepreneurs can get a good idea of what it will take to open their dream bar, from choosing a theme and furnishings to financing and researching liquor and labor laws.
And, with a section on drinking games and toasting suggestions, the Professional Bartender's Handbook is way more than just a collection of recipes.
5 stars

You (or Someone You Know) Needs This BookReview Date: 2007-12-24
As for recipes, the book has 1500 of them, from A Bat and a Ball to Zuma Buma, with a separate section for non-alcoholic drinks. Over 200 pages filled with recipes! None are indexed, only alphabetized, so if you're looking for various martinis--from apple to vodka, you could be skimming pages for awhile.
The book starts with the basics about liquor, like the difference between Haitian and Jamaican rum, how wines should be served, etc., There's even a chapter on drinking games and toasts--what more could you want? Everything you need to be a fantastic bartender is right here.

Lots of material and codeReview Date: 2003-01-20
Chapters on networking and RMI were very useful.
It helped me to understand Jini, though I got a lot of help reading other textbooks in parallell.
Issues on agent techonology were very interesting.
A complete, detailed, well-written bookReview Date: 2001-09-04
His writing is detailed, explaining how things are done and why they're done that way; after reading this book you will have an excellent understanding of Jini. For example, the detailed discussion and the several examples on UDP multicast and how it is used in the Discovery protocol was quite fascinating. I found the case study chapters, accounts of real-life applications of Jini and JavaSpaces, to be very interesting to read as well.
Overall, an inforative, highly readable book aimed at advanced developers.
Very readable for practitionersReview Date: 2001-01-31
The language is disarmingly simple and straightforward without being mired in pure fact. That's harder than it looks. This book is also the most natural walk-up to discussing Jini that I've read. The author's treatment of dynamic stub downloading, in particular, doesn't worry if the reader can hold the mental process in his head; it explains the concept once, then provides a checklist for putting the sample code in motion. Repetition is the mother of learning.
Take the title seriously; it's for "professional" readers, but take that to mean practitioners of the language and distributed computing. The "aha's" in this book will escape anyone who thinks typing in the code will reveal all. It definitely helps to bring some background to the party.
The typos per page grow as you go, but they're not too distracting. The usual is a missing "the" or "is," but I didn't see one that sacrificed meaning. I hate to concede this point entirely to the reality of whiz-bang technical publishing; I think proofreaders just ain't what they used to be.
Jini development through example and applicationReview Date: 2000-09-29
While the core of the book is firmly focussed on Jini technology (and the related JavaSpaces) together with the development utilities and tools that surround it, the complete picture is provided by two other sections that start and end the book.
First, there is an extensive discussion of Java and related networking technologies. This is important in order to situate the discussion of Jini itself and understand its position in the broader computing field. In particular, RMI and CORBA are introduced at the start to provide a context, and to show how they complement Jini on the one hand, and can be used with it on the other. This is very good if your familiarity with these is limited.
Second, the final section contains several application descriptions that show both the kind of applications that might be constructed with Jini, and how the power of Jini can be used in effective and novel ways. These chapters are written by people actually involved in Jini systems development, and describe real systems rather than toy educational examples. Specially interesting to me was the Paradigma agent framework, itself opening up an interesting set of possibilities for further development.
In summary, the book covers background and complementary material, Jini fundamentals and case-studies, all in one coherent whole. Backed up with real code examples throughout, it is an excellent place to start both for the Jini developer and also for those seeking a good source of information on Jini and related technologies. Perhaps most interesting, however, is the variety of illuminating applications that provide a valuable source of ideas and inspiration.

The Professional Pilots' Career Guide is not just for wanna-be's and newbies. There is a lot of valuable information for those who maybe considering shifting career gears by branching off into a different flying job. The book also includes a section on the do's and don'ts of interviewing for the job and on resources available on the Internet.
Anyone interested in getting started (or moving up) in their professional pilot career should consider reading this book to get the edge on their competition.

If you want a job as a pilot, don't know whether to try for a small or large carrier - Wonder about prerequisites to fly airlines, wonder about pay scales on small or large carriers --- Its In There
Wonder about how to look and act at a job interview - Important websites for pilots--Its In There.
I only wish that I had read this book before I applied for my first flying job, it would have helped me to find the proper track, and follow it.

Best book I've read on motherhood yetReview Date: 2002-02-01
I also think this would be a great book for any young woman who wants to "have it all" to read. It really does give a realistic picture of both worlds, work and home, and helps you think think creatively, and sensibly (love how Lewis, before she got pregnant, thought that the first year of her baby's life would be a great time to sail around the world!). Yes, combining motherhood and career can be done, but as these women show, you've got to be creative, you've got to be true to your instincts, and you shouldn't give a hoot about whether you've got a glamorous enough self-description to impress people at cocktail parties!

His method for meditation and achieving the alpha state is better than any other method I have tried. Like anything else, it takes practice, but he does give helpful examples of how people use his method to improve health, diagnose medical problems, and develop ESP, just to name a few.
Like he states, you probably want to read the book all the way through first, then go back and re-read the key sections to learn the process. He even has a checklist which shows what pages describe the various techniques. Makes you want to take one of the Silva seminars.
Excellent book.

Initially, I was apprehensive to even speak to a suspect, prospect, or an existing client, until I finished reading the book at least once. I was fearful that if I had not, I may say or do something that would prove fatal to yet another sales call.
In all the years of education, self help books, seminars, and motivational speakers, I have finally found an author who hit the mark for me. Thanks Bill.

The BEST Proposal Guide Available TodayReview Date: 2008-06-09
The layout of the material is excellent, making it a ready-reference for casual use also. There are many different examples, best practices, and suggestions that are very helpful, even for small businesses. I also like the way the book is bound - it's a plastic spiral-bound hard cover, which makes it so that you can easily lay the book open (flatter) on a desk.
The interesting thing is, I liked the book enough that if I get the chance, I may take the class they offer (especially if they ever bring it to Hampton Roads, VA). If the book is this good, the class surely must be of value as well.
