(1) It clearly described the RFP process from start to finish - and RFP development is a process with a defined life cycle.
(2) The author goes well beyond the immediate objective of writing an RFP and managing the process by including thought-provoking material on post-award vendor management. This material sometimes escapes the RFP development team who is more focused on getting to the award milestone without thinking about the post-award ramifications.
(3) It's not boring - the writing is lively, and the material is presented at a fast pace. The pace, however, does not leave gaps. Every facet of the RFP process is covered in sufficient detail.
In addition to the above, the approach set forth in this book is consistent with best practices in RFP development. I especially like the copious checklists, the RFP roadmap, and the way illustrations are skillfully used to reinforce concepts and advice.
Note that the focus of this book is information technology and software acquisition. Some of the material is unique to those domains; however, the basic principles and RFP process can be used for virtually any type of RFP, from office services to purchasing furniture.
Overall, this is the one book I recommend for RFP development. If you are an IT professional, regardless of role, the chances are you will be involved in this process at some point in your career, making this book a valuable addition to your library. If you have recently been assigned to an RFP team you should get this book as soon as possible, and use it as your compass and blueprint if your organization does not already have a formal RFP process in place.

Writing these documents is not a big deal, however to make the customers read
"Use Case"-documents and provide feedback is much more difficult. But without feedback
it is not possible for a developer to write correct requirement documents.
I ordered this book because I liked the word "collaboration" in its title. It implies
the importance of working together with the customer in order to get the requirements right.
As I expected the author concentrates much more on the process to elicit proper requirements
rather than on the notations of requirements models such as UML. The best way to collaborate
with customers is to have structered meetings the so called workshops.
The book is divided into following three parts: "1. Overview of Requirements Workshops",
"2. Requirements Workshop Framework", "3. Requirements Workshop Design Strategies". Especially
the 2nd part contains a lot of detailed information and sometimes it is difficult not to get
lost. But part one and three are quit easy to follow.
Only in part one is a chapter which describes the different requirements models.
They are categorized according to their view, focus and level of detail. After reading this chapter you
know when to use which model. "Use Case"-Models are the most popular requirements models.
However, there are software projects in which other requirements model are more appropriate.
This chapter gives you an overview of the 19 different models.
Although a brief summary of every model is provided there is no example. If you want to know
the details of these different models you have to look for other sources of information.
The rest of the book concentrates on the prepartion and facilitation of workshops. A lot of useful
advice is given on how to manage people, content and processes in a workshop. Most of the
content of the book is aimed at facilitors of workshops. If you have nobody in your company who
has the necessary skillset to facilitate workshops, the author recommends to hire someone from
a consulting company, who can do this for your workshops.
On the author's website there several useful templates and guidelines which help you make your
workshops more successfull.
This book is a recommended reading for everyone who is responsible for the success of a software project.
How to do requirements workshops that work?Review Date: 2006-12-10
The author provides a framework for organizing requirements workshops. The framework is based on getting six Ps right. The Ps are "Purpose, Participants, Principles, Products, Place and Process". For each step it describes typical things that need to be done. First establish a share purpose. Find the right participants for the workshop. Set the principles and ground rules. Decide what work products to create (the book provides an excellent overview of work products used in requirement analysis). Define the requirements for the location and decide where to hold the workshop and decide the process to hold it.
In each steps, the author provides great tips and insights from her experience in facilitating workshops. In the later part, some strategies of requirement analysis are presented and the book ends with some case studies.
Overall, the book is well written an easy to read. The requirement workshop framework, at times seems overly complex and certainly would need to be tailored to the specific situation. However, I think this could not have been prevented when talking about a generic way of holding requirement workshops.
In Agile Development, requirement workshops are one way of doing requirement analysis and spreading the requirement analysis over the whole project. For these kind of workshops, this book is probably the only reference, eventhough the book itself does not cover this very well. Therefore "requirements by collaboration" is a must read for anyone who wants to do requirements workshops.

I can just sit with this book for half an hour any time. It is a wonderful combination of humour - "Airplane travel is nature's way of making you look like your passport photo." (Al Gore) - might be my favourite. But there is also the deeply profound and quite moving.

This is a must read for pilots or ANYONE interested in flying or connected with the aviation industry. It is NOT a " sparse, flowery book of aviation poetry," - it is a very thorough book of aviation history in the form of various quotes. I would estimate that there are approximately 1000 quotes contained in this easy to read format.
This book makes a WONDERFUL gift for pilots and those who have always been fascinated with flying. However, unlike most books that contain a few poetic lines on each page - this book centers more around historic and literary quotes. Although it is more than a "coffee table" book, it is certainly a book that would easily interest most guests.
"Slipping the Surly Bonds" is divided into 14 areas and has an index for easy referencing. Areas of interests include: First Flights, Magic and Wonder of Flight, Air Power, Combat, Predictions, Piloting, Safety, Space, and Women Fly and more.
As a female Vice President of two small Aviation Companies, I have often searched for gifts for pilots, etc. who have been difficult to buy for. I have never gone wrong when purchasing this book as a gift.

succinctly and simply, uses his wise words of the everyday in the workplace to create useful knowledge for the day-to-day practitioner of organizational and relational leadership. His book is well-crafted and offers realistic lessons for anyone interested in becoming a "catalytic companion" at work and play. All the "white" space he uses in the page layout allows the reader to comfortably insert themselves into his message and get the meaning of the book from within. And, it's internet interactive too. Great job, Mr. Joyce, I've already ordered ten copies

Stephen uses the ant and the anthill to illustrate and contrast the difference between the ways of nature and how most individuals act. We need to realize that "at the most fundemental level all natural system are cooperative rather than competitive". The ants, while a very basic life form, by cooperating can accomplish wonders. Humans on the other hand, while extremely complex and highly developed, struggle in so many areas of life simply because we compete with each other rather than collaborate.
While the book's primary purpose is to teach the value of collaboration, it really is much more of a manual for developing or improving your life. Stephen starts with examining our belief system. "Our belief systems control the way we live. Beliefs make good servants but poor masters." Too often, we let beliefs master us, instead of being our servants.
The book is filled with meaningful quotations tied to the subject being discusses. There is a wealth of wisdom in the book. There is really so much wisdom that it would be difficult to absorb it all in one reading.
Some of my favorite bits of widsom are:
"The only happy people I know are the ones who are working well at something the consider important." Abraham Maslow
You can "survive any how if you have sufficient why." Nietzsche.
The book is well written, easy to read and has very important exercises at the end of each chapter. Also there are references to his website for "Go Deeper" on many subjects covered in the book.
The world is changing. The old system of command and control no longer works. If you are going to survive and thrive in today's more complex world, you must learn to collaborate. This is a wonderful guide to the new paradigm.
One word of caution, reading it is not enough. Take action on the lessons that are contained in the book.
Sorry to buck the trend of gushing but. . . .Review Date: 2007-08-29
To be clear: "Collaborative Intelligence" is a GREAT way to market the stale old cliches of teambuilding. And no one who does leadership or organizational development should EVER get points taken off for writing the obligatory book to accompany the lucretive consulting gigs. But try as I might---I really couldn't find anything really new here. NOT that Joyce is putting anything out there as new. He is very respectful of citing his sources. And he does add value making the work of Senge or Sharmer perhaps a bit more accessible (although I always found the Senge "Field Books" to be extremely accessible. And "Presence" is a book I'd call brilliant.)
As it appears this book will sell---perhaps he can now afford a ghost writer or even an editor. There is a conceptual muddiness that runs through the book. One quick example: Joyce cites "Perception" as being one of the 5 elements of Perception. (page 30). On page 129 he introduces a question (and it is an important one) that he tells us "runs through the whole book." Mr. Joyce---why did you wait till the middle of the book for that?
That's the frustration---the guy really is good. The book really has a core sense of having a message that is vitally important on all sorts of levels. But the book itself is full of half formed, cliches (see the chapter on "Communication")and platitudes that get in the way of his message.
Look for his NEXT book. I'm betting that should he decide to partner with some of the folks he's read---he'll have something important to say. Maybe even something new and conceptually sound.

All the nagging questions I had about a process I didn't understand--even some issues I didn't know existed--were laid out in a very clear, friendly, and enjoyable format.
I had read some reviews on this site saying that Cynthia Shapiro does free consultations and even calls back on the same day. I found myself in a confusing situation during a job offer (a company I like, but at a much lower rate than they advertised). This new third dimension includes, among other things, "acting to ensure the right parties have been involved, in the right sequence, to deal with the right issues that engage the right set of interests, at the right tables, at the right time, under the right expectations, and facing the right consequences of walking away if there is no deal."
Here is real-world example of acting to ensure the right parties and the right sequence: A US firm was looking to establish a joint venture in Mexico and had identified three potential partners (one excellent, one good, and one that barely meets the set criteria). Should this firm start negotiations with the best prospect, and if those negotiations fail, then move to the next, and so on? Or wouldn't it be far better if this US firm makes it known in the industry (in Mexico) that they are looking for a joint venture partner, and induce these three prospects to come to the US firm? Negotiating simultaneously with the three potential partners was indeed better, especially that the US firm set up the negotiation conditions whereby the three Mexican prospects were rushing to compete for the joint venture!
Although this book introduces a third dimension to negotiation, the other two dimensions are also well covered by the authors, with a large number of real-world examples. The second dimension covers designing value-creating deals, including the traditional concept of enlarging the pie, and how to make lasting deals. The first dimension focuses on the tactics at the negotiation table, including problem-solving tactics such as shaping perceptions, setting ambitious target prices, interpersonal skills, cultural empathy, and many other tactics familiar to those who have read traditional negotiation books.
In short, 3-D Negotiation is a welcomed addition to the topic of negotiation, especially due to its strategic approach to negotiations. I particularly like the idea of backward mapping the negotiation process, starting with the desired target or outcome, then mapping all the parties, their interests, no-deal options. I was also intrigued by the authors' philosophy and the 3-D strategy of: "Let them have your way", as well as their concept of "Zone of Possible Agreement".
Although this excellent book is written with important and complex deals in mind, the 3-D approach can be indeed applied to simpler deals and negotiations. In fact, the reader will find a large number of examples of negotiations ranging from the simple ones such as buying a car or a house, to the more complex ones such as negotiations between countries, or among large international organizations.
