After reading this inspiring book, we have found courage to shred the slopes ourselves. The author obviously has a true love of skiing himself, and we think he is way overdue to write a companion piece on Hillary Lind, and to check out the wild slopes of Alaska. We look forward to reading future books from this outstanding children's author! Kudos from Juneau!

Interesting, inspiring children's book.

The Story of an Anti-Hero
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-23
This is an excellent book and very well written. It is the story of an anti-heroine who is easy to admire, but very difficult to like. My children disliked Street's arrogance, her disdain for training and the negative attitude that robbed her of the complete success that could have followed her natural courage and abilities. It is nevertheless a great example to show young women how to believe in themselves, to persevere in the face of setbacks, and the importance of courage. The author did an excellent job of portraying how very far Street could have gone if she had accompanied her courage with judgement, and her confidence with kindness. It was particularly inspiring to my daughters.

Quebec Rocks! I just don't get the hockey...

Quebec City Crisis was a book that I enjoyed, even though I do not like hockey. I rate it four stars because, being a non-hockey player, I do NOT get the hockey games they play. Roy MacGregor forges books that are both mystery and hockey.
I have read Mystery in Lake Placid, The Night they stole the Stanley Cup, Terror in Florida, Ghost Of the Stanley Cup, and Sudden Death in New York City. Same thing, all good books, yet all uncomprehensible hockey games. My favourite character was Bart Lundrigan, the mysterious newspaper person.

The tounrament where some famous hockey stars like Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur and Wayne Gretzky first showed the world their talents. Now it is time for the Screech Owls to do the same. The dream trip turns into a nightmare. Travis is asked by a newspaper to keep a diary and someone sabotoged it. The fans start booing them and the Screech Owls must find a way to find the culprit. Will they find him in time?

I think this book is excellent, i have read all the screech owl books in order up to this one, except i read Nightmare in Nagano before this cuz that wuz the only one my friends had that i had cuz we had to do a report. I haven't finished the book yet but i will be finished the book at the end of the month. I love Roys books and i absolutly adore the way he describes the hockey games that the Owls play (i play hockey in real life). I love the way roy has hockey and mystery genre into one book and how all of his mysterys actually make sense after all the hockey games and investigations. I love the mysterys and i plan to read the rest of the owls books (even if i can't keep up with the pace they are being made). Thanks roy for the many great books! Keep reading and never stop writing all those books that i adore soo much.

A great book! It's suspenseful and fun to read about when the Screech Owls, a 12 year old traveling hockey team, travels to Quebec City for a hockey tournament. They didn't know it, but there would be trouble ahead. This mystery is a great book for both fans and players. I play hockey and find this series to be very addicting. You won't be able to put this book down.

Scooby and the gang are headed for a weekend of skiing and winter fun at the Big Pine Ski Lodge. However, when they arrive the slopes are abandoned and the lodge is almost empty. Rumors and sightings of a snow monster have scared most people away. But, Fred, Daphne, and Velma aren't scared of anything (Scooby and Shaggy are scared of just about everything) and have a hunch that the snow monster isn't what it appears to be. A fun and entertaining book that I enjoyed reading. I especially liked the scenes with Scooby and the snowballs. Kids will probably enjoy this book as will any Scooby-Doo fan.

Definitive volume on winter travel

I bought this book when it was called the The Winter Wilderness Companion: Traditional and Native American Skills for the Undiscovered Season this revised edition is even better with new plans for a traditional wooden toboggan and more trail-craft tips.

I've used the plans to make my own mukluks and mittens with great success and can throughly recommend this book for both beginners and experienced outdoors folks alike.

For those who are really serious about learning winter skills, it would be worth checking out the Conover's website at northwoodsways.com

Although the book is evocatively written with phrases like "...frosted hair makes long haired women look like fairy-tale damsels and bearded men like hoary old walruses..." there is no lack of attention to detail, with meticulous research and dirt-time experience. The Conovers are arguably some of the most experienced winter travel guides around, and this book is testament to that.

Fine successors to Calvin Rutstrum

Review Date: 2007-03-22
I happened across this book while looking for a Calvin Rutstrum book. I am a fan of old Cal's, particularly the great Paradise Below Zero, and read that it was cited in Snow Walker's Companion. I had also just purchased a large wall tent with a wood stove, and had been on a "shakedown" winter campout/Nordic ski trip, and have become quite interested in that type of winter camping. More the "old trapper" style of winter doings than the high-tech ski backpacking type.
This book fills that bill to a T, and to boot it truly carries on the Rutstrum tradition magnificently. Rutstrum had a lot of practical "northwoods" material, but he was shy on detail sometimes, and there is some stuff in his books outdated even for the modern "throwback".
This book is chock full of detail, along with fine narrative. It actually tells you how do most things you will need to do. And it is terrific to find a contemporary book that isn't afraid of the axe, fire, and gun; one that shows that you can be a great lover of the wilderness, our priceless environment, and a hunter, too. They put it very gently so as not to scare anybody off!

This book teaches real techniques based on native practices. No fancy technology or yuppie gear, just how to be comfortable in places most people fear to go.

This book is also footnoted and referenced in many other winter camping books, always with much respect.

The new "Snow Walker's Companion" is the third version of Garrett and Alexandra Conover's "Winter Wilderness Companion (2001) and "A Snow Walker's Companion" (1996) and although much of the material is the same, Garrett told me in an interview that it was time for a revised text. In the five years since they wrote the "Wilderness" book there have been a number of significant changes in things like portable stoves (now can be bought made of titanium), GPS navigation and some other skills and gear; Suppliers have gone out of business and new ones have come into the marketplace, and some equipment and clothing that was not available commercially, is now. Stone Ridge Press, the new publisher, has added a new section of color photos and the journal of the first major trip that the Conovers made on snowshoes, towing their supplies on native sleds. All through, the book remains highly readable, enjoyable and thought-provoking. I felt the size of the "Wilderness Companion" was better for carrying in a pack, but that little quibble aside, the new edition is one of the very best winter camping books out there.

Steven Gerrard - wow what a wonderful football (soccer) player. And guess what? He can write as well. Very good read; interesting; informative about his growing up; his career at Liverpool and as an international star for England. He doesn't pull any punches; names names and praises and criticizes as he sees fit. Most sports autobiographies are rubbish particularly for someone who is in the middle of his career but this one is worth the time. Nice photo inserts as well.

Candid and Entertaining Sports book

As an American who loves watching the Premier League games every weekend, I have become a huge fan of Liverpool. Reading this autobiography of Steven Gerrard helped me gain insight into the depth of the football culture from youth leagues to the professional ranks in England. Gerrard's story is a fairly typical young boy achieves his dreams tale, but he is engaging and the book is lively and highly readable. His competitiveness and drive come through on every page and the background on some of the better known personalities in European football were very enlightening to this Yank since we obviously don't get the coverage here.

Trial by Basketball is the Slaughterhouse Five sports book. It's a fascinating history into Laker coach Tex Winters rise from garage band gymnasium roots, college sucess, the amazing Bull Run to current Los Angeles Laker status. As a Long Beach State 49er booster and renewed Laker backer, I recommend TRIAL strongly to fans from N.Y. to L.A. The authors unique style is a keenly accurate flashback account of Tex Winters classic career with insights into the world of sports and life as it is! A humorously intriguing One of A Kind Biography. The book equally satisfies the golden age Wilt Chamberlain transition era as well as the Rodman, Kobe X'er generation. Review Date: 2000-05-08
Bender's succinct, edgy style carries the reader through Winter's life while racing down the court with Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, and other NBA giants. Bender tells it like it was--no holds barred. Winter's coaching philosophy of discipline, hard work, fairness and individual intergrity comes alive as we watch him lead individual players to become not only the best players they can be, but also the best men that they can be. Bender brings basketball personalities to life as we watch them struggle to learn Winter's famous "triangle offence" and to balance their individual desires for achievement and glory with Winter's emphasis on the ultimate good of the whole team.

The pace is fast, and the anecdotes and behind-the-scenes tidbits entertain as we go with the teams through Winter's unprecedented 53 year professional career as a coach. From Kansas State, Washington, and the Houston Rockets to fourteen years with the Chicago Bulls, and the current LA Lakers, we travel the backroads of behind the scene basketball. Bender gives us the inside story on the conflicts, the joys, and the frustrations of coaching mega-stars with mega-egos while trying to teach them values of character and integrity.

This book would be a perfct gift for any high school athlete. Bender gives the reader deep insights into not only the sports psychology that Winter uses, but into the secrets of what it really takes to be able to uphold personal values in the rip-roaring jungle of professional sports.

I loved every minute of this great ride, and if you love basketball, you will too!

Must Read for Triangle Offense and Tex Winter Fans

Review Date: 2000-04-30
I started the book on Friday and finished it on Saturday (a real page turner). Bender does an outstanding job covering Tex Winter's Life up to and including his joining the LA Lakers in 99. The book covers the life of a 78 year old basketball guru (the Master of the Triangle Offense) and spans his 50+ coaching years at the college and professional level.

Bender's writing style is well balanced...and is completely honest. Tex Winter's coaching philosophy is covered with frequent quotes from Tex Winter's 1962 Coaching Book, the Triple Post Offense.

Some readers may see this authorized biography as kind of a "Forest Gump of Basketball" due to it's basic story telling of Tex's as a folksy, nice guy with a willingness to tell the "unvarnished truth".

More importantly, the book serves as a useful reference tool on how a person should face conflict and live life in a stressful world. Bender writes a biography that illustrates the importance of good character, hard work, integrety, having a sense of humor, and not taking yourself too seriously.

Basketball coaches will find the book instructional with the many lessons learned from a coaching career spanning 7 decades...specifically it descibes how a coach deals in a competitive must win environment.

I especially liked how the book started off and closed.

Foreward is by Phi Jackson. MJ, Pippen and Rodman fans will enjoy the second half of the book which deals largely with the Chicago Bull years (some new stuff too). As Mickey would say, "Try it, your Like It" or better yet, just read it!

It's obvious that the author has perused plenty of climbing books and learned from the successes and failures of others. This is a gorgeous book, with concise route descriptions that are informative without wrecking the adventure of the climbs themselves. The photos are clear and useful and the book is well-organized. I have climbed a few of the longer routes in Cody as well as several in Montana and have yet to find any inaccuracies. 99% of the book is about routes - the obligatory stuff about local ethics and history is interesting but brief, unlike some guidebooks that fill half their pages with Leave No Trace advice.

Highly recommended for all ice climbers interested in seeing the Yellowstone ecosystem from high on an ice climb!
