A fun little book for little ones who like to skate or are young fans of ice skating. (I wouldn't really call it a book, it's more like a mini playset-type of thing.)

A good history lesson

Review Date: 2006-08-01
This book was okay for an elementary/middle school child's library. It contained more historical information of world events than actual information about the games played by the 1980 Olympic Hockey team. Very little information was given about the players themselves or their sentiments at the time.

A decent guide for planning a vacation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-21
This book seems to have been written solely for a family vacation. The information on hotels and prices is invaluable and the after ski activities mentioned for each resort are a nice after thought, but what it seriously lacks is a guide to each mountain's slopes. An attempt is made but comes up short throughout the book on each ski area to give hints on where to go. An addition of a trail map to relate names to for each area would be a great improvement. Needs to talk about the SKIING!!

This book is a little dated now, but I still use it for figuring out how to get the most skiing for the money. I haven't found anything else like it out there.

Review, but very interesting

Anyone that is a beginer, or just wants to know how to snowboard, should read this book. It informs you on how to snowboard on a basic level. Some of the things it teaches you is carving, falling the correct way, ollieing, and tricks. This book also gives information in different types of snowboarding, such as slalom racing, boardercross, hafl pipe, and dryslope competition.

For me, being a snowboarder for three years, going on four, I only give the book three stars, because I already know most of the information the author is trying to give you. For me, this was like a review type book, but i still thought that it was interesting.

Not The Best

Review Date: 2005-12-18
Spends way too much time on sanding skis, using klister, conditioning wooden skis among other outdated or rarely used items. Not a thorough enough book for the skiing enthusiast and not simple enough for the basic skier! Needs more time spent on the newer glide and kick waxes and their application. Plus the review of snow crystals is more complicated than it needs to be. Get "Complete Guide to Cross Country Ski Waxing" by Nat Brown its a better guide, especially valuable if you're an enthusiast.

Wayne Gretzky

I'm writing about the book I read in Social Studies. This book was farly good. This book talked about Wayne's life. It said that when he was a little kid he moved to Toronto to get away from all the paretens who's kids were mad that he was always scoring. At a young age Wayne played hockey with his grandmother. Wayne was also great as a young boy. Wayne was 18 years old when he started to play hockey in the NHL. Wayne has 40 Reular season records. Wayne played for 4 different teams. Wayne Gretzky is the greats or one of the greats. I think that if you like sports you should read this book.

Trail recommendations for Colorado X-C skiers and snowshoers
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-22
Clear and attractive book, but scary, because some of the advice is not suitable for inexperienced or beginner snwshoers. Skiers can consider tackling 10 to 20 mile trails in winter and at high altitudes, but that's too much for anyone new to winter in the high country--especially misleading because the author rates some of these as novice to intermediate.

Great survey of parks, but not a source for winter hikes.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-04
I give this book 3 stars because it *is* a good book - just not really for winter hiking. It is filled with short - usually 3 miles or less - walks around the Seattle area. It is more or less a survey of Seattle-area parks. I enjoyed Harvey Manning's opinionated writing style as usual, but it's not the same fare as their usual 100 Hikes books.

In summary - if you're looking to enjoy Puget Sound parks - in any season - this is a great book. If you're looking for real winter hikes that involve packing a backpack, lunch, and getting in a good trek in the woods away from people - look elsewhere.

Olympic Gymnasts of the World
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-20
All gymnasts, even beginners, work very hard on their goals. This book shows that no matter what size you are, you can be a good gymnast. If you're big and powerful you are probably good on floor and vault, or if you're light and flexible you're probably good on beam and bars. This book also shows that gymnastics is a team sport. This book is great and interesting. It shows different gymnasts from different places and different methods. There's all different ways of doing gymnastics, that's what's so cool about it. Read this book!

Good, but too many errors
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-13
The problem with this book is that although it features good biographies and very nice pictures of several female gymnasts, it has way too many typos and errors. If careful editing and consideration would have been made before publishing the book, the book would probably be a far more enjoyable read. Anyways, this book includes biographical sketches of female gymnasts such as Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Vanessa Atler, Svetlana Khorkina, Kristen Maloney, and some others that I can't remember. It also has a chapter with a brief history of gymnastics at the beginning. The biographies include very nice full-color pictures along with a brief list of highlights in each gymnasts's career. Overall, I thought that this book was pretty good, but I would have rated it more if it was more accurate and had less mistakes.

The Worst of the Worst of Gymnastics Books!

Review Date: 2003-01-13
Clearly, Rachel Rutledge does not know how to write a decent book of gymnastics. I have read many more that were far better then this one. There is wrong and left out info, (Who says that Kim Zmeskal was on the 1996 Olympic team, and why did Ms. Rutledge leave out Amanda Borden, the team captain?!) Also, there are misspelled words. Vanessa Atler's name is NOT ZVannessa! Plus, why does Dominique Moceanu have to be included in all the gymnastics books I read? She is a wimp and in my opinion, a very bad gymnast. (Sorry Dominique Moceanu fans!) The only thing I thought was good about this book were the pictures. Save your money for a better book.

A rushed, but interesting book

I liked the people in this book, but there were incorrect facts and many typos. If a little more effort would have been put in this book it would be excellent.

TERRIBLE!

I am totally in love with gymnastics, but please, don't ell me that Kim Zmeskal was on the '96 Olympic Team. Nor that Vanessa Atler's name is spelt ZVanessa! I love the pictures, I hate the inaccurate info!!!
