I read this book when I was 12. The difficulty level is not very high so anyone looking for something challenging might look elsewhere, but any hockey or even non-hockey fan looking for some light reading would enjoy this book. You might want to have a little understanding of the game of hockey so you can follow some of the parts about the actual play. The characters are fun and and the dialogue witty. More conservative parents may want to look at this series before allowing their children to read it. Overall the whole series is fun to read, most of all the two books about Woodsie.

Billy's dad is every players worst nightmare. He intrudes on practices, yells at the coach and comes into the locker room and help Billy put on his gear. Mr. Fowler isnt sure Billy has to put in two weeks of summer camp while the other teammates are doing just one. Should he be Mr. Intensity all the time. It's clear Billy needs help standing up against his father. WHat are teammates for anyways?

Boot, the Wings great right wing is great crusing the margins and sneaking in a shot when least expected. But midway body checking is allowed. Boot will not hit and he is the only one on the team that is being creamed. Will he hold back as long so he doesnt get respect or even worse lose his place on the Wings?

Fun Book to Read

Normally this isn't the kind of book I read as I'm more into fantasy, but I really enjoyed this. I loved the characters who were very realistic. The reason I took off a star is because as I said up above, I like books to be a bit longer. I'd definitelly recomend this book to anyone who is looking for a good read.

This isn't the kind of book that I normally read; I usually lean more towards fantasy, (CS Lewis, JRR Tolkein), but this was very well written.
The book is set in Yukon, Canada, and is the story of a young girl who dreams of mushing dogs. The imagry is beautiful, and the storyline is clear and captivating.
If you're looking for something to read to your children, any age, this is definitely worth looking at.
The reason for the four stars (as upposed to five) is that it IS a children's book, and not something I would normally read.

Ever confused with prices and functions of the different options and accessories of your loved truck to buy? Does it make you wandering how much the dealer want to profit with a specific option? This book can answer all these questions. It provide a comprehensive list of these options and accessories-- their function, description, invoice price and MSRP price. Also extremly useful is the review section for each model. It is very helpful for me as a novice to truck. But I think even if you have a long experience, you will also find the review section a good assistant for deciding your next truck to buy.

This follow-up to "The Moccassin Goalie" is awonderful story about growing up, loving hockey, teamwork, and gettingalong. This story takes Danny, the moccassin goalie, from where we left off in the original story, through the championship game. The illustrations are dreamlike and evoke memories of growing up and skating outdoors. The story teaches kids to work together, try hard to overcome handicaps, and to cherish the times you have together. My five year old son chooses this book on many, many story times. I don't mind at all. It's just as enjoyable with repeated readings. END

Interesting glimpse of how a daredevil Winter Olympic sport was born
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-23
The sport of skeleton makes for one of the world's greatest unwritten stories.

Upon telling people I'm a skeleton slider they almost invariably respond "skeleton? What's that?," only to be left wide-eyed upon learning that participants dive headfirst onto a sled and plunge at speeds of 70-80 mph down a mountainside ice track for a minute of sheer thrill (or terror).

Such elements make for a captivating story, as recounted in Headfirst, the first-ever book on this daredevil Winter Olympic sport. Author Robie Vaughn (former director of the sport's American federation) recounts the wild adventures of pioneering American athletes (including himself), as well as his leadership role among enthusiasts who successfully lobbied to add skeleton to the 2002 Olympic program, thereby boosting the sport's worldwide popularity. Along the way, Vaughn and his colleagues overcame serious obstacles, particularly jealous bobsled officials who actively subverted their efforts behind the scenes.

Despite Headfirst's merits, readers seeking a simple and up-to-date overview of the sport (i.e. profiles of current star athletes, how to take lessons, etc) may find this book lacking. Resembling an autobiography, the book instead devotes tremendous ink to Vaughn's circle of family and friends, his successes as a Texas oil-and-gas executive, as well as his exploits in activities such as mountain climbing. Coinciding with Vaughn's greatest involvement in the sport, Headfirst is primarily set in the years 1997-2002, leaving readers in the dark about the sport's major developments in subsequent years.

Despite these limitations, Headfirst is a worthwhile reading for those seeking an insider's glimpse of skeleton's arrival on the Olympic stage.

A good read!

Headfirst encapsulates all that is revered about Olympic competition. Great athleticism and determination are the recognized qualities of any athlete in pursuit of Olympic gold.

The ability to compete on this worldwide stage is the dream of many athletes. For skeleton athletes the dream seemed inaccessible, as their sport had not been recognized in Olympic competition since 1948.

Seemingly far removed from snow and extreme sports, Dallas businessman Robie Vaughn saw an opportunity to "add new blood" to the Winter Olympics. Determined to find a way to enter Olympic competition, the author discovered this little-known sport of sliding on a sled not much bigger than a cafeteria tray, navigating a mile-long track at speeds often exceeding 80 mph--headfirst. From his first slide down the run, he was hooked.

Combining his passion for the sport and his keen business acumen, the author navigated through seemingly endless obstacles to achieve his dream. One taste of victory came in getting the sport reinstated in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Like any good success story, Headfirst details the personalities and politics encountered on the way to glory. I felt a sense of pride when the story culminated with members of the USA Skeleton team accepting their medals, the first in over 50 years.

Armchair Interviews says: Although trying to remember all the acronyms and names was somewhat challenging, this intriguing sports story is worthy reading if you like people who accept and overcome challenges.

Still useful after all these years...

This is the only book of its kind, and one badly in need of updating and revision because it was published so long ago. Winters offers a historical overview of intercollegiate athletics in the community colleges, tracing the evolution of the NJCAA and the split of the California community colleges to form their own athletic association. Most significantly, the book offers a historical roster of community/junior college alumni who went on to Olympic and professional sports careers. Much more could be done today to add to and fill in gaps in this work, but this is the single most significant piece of historical research ever published on community college sports and the thousands of great athletes produced by two-year schools nationwide.

Blaise tells a very inspirational story about his life and all the challenges that he was able to overcome to follow his dream. Blaise used football as a way to communicate when he was unable to talk plainly. He tells how he never gave-up and continued to believe in himself when no-one else would. Blaise had a vary successful football career and is now a successful speaker. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is a great illustration of where heart and determination will get you in life. Blaise Winter, from day one, had to overcome many problems. From his cleft palate to his stubborn high school principle and coach, Blaise battled against all who didn't believe and reached his life-long dream....playing in the NFL. If you are feeling down on yourself or have little confidence, read this book and allow Blaise Winter to inspire you.
