What a Love Story! Anyone who watched the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City couln't help but feel for this young couple who skated their hearts out only to have their Olympic gold snatched from them by judges with their own political agenda. We will always remember their tears of sadness, then their tears of happiness when it was decided they did deserve a gold medal around their necks! The fact that they are a couple in real life made the story even more sweet. This book, while short on words, is not short on pictures which makes it well worth the money. These are two young people who definately have their hearts in the right place and they deserve every good thing that comes their way!

Nice story of the Olympic champions

How nice for these skaters to be remembered in print for something other than one tough moment in their otherwise stellar careers - the Salt Lake Olympic Judging debacle. Smith gives a warm, intimate account of Sale and Pelletier, from their early training to their close personal relationship and other athletic triumphs. Recommend for fans of this pair, figure skating, and anyone who wants to learn more about this charming twosome and their REAL story....not just one moment.

2 Thumbs Up!!

This book has some great color photos of Jamie Salé and David Pelletier. It also has good detail on how they each got into the sport of figure skating. There were a couple problems that I had with the book:

1. The other did not write original captions for the pictures. They are exerps from the text.

2. The author wrote that Salé and Pelletier received scores of 5.7's and 5.8's from the judges for their long program. They actually received 5.8's and 5.9's.

Not the greatest guide to ice skating! There is a lot on what you should wear and look for in skates, but as far as the skating goes. . . There's practically nothing in it! But what's in it is written well.

I love winter anyway but this book was a very cute and light read. The character of Kristen was great and someone I could relate too. All in all the book was a quick no brainer that was very enjoyable to read.

This book is about Kirsten, a senior in high school, who goes to live with her older sister, Gretchen, for a couple of months. Gretchen is a divorced 24 year old with a 3 year old son named Brett, so when she fell and broke her leg skiing someone had to come help with things around the house. Lucky for her, Kirsten was nice enough to come help out.

Now, there's two brothers who help out with shoveling snow outside Gretchen's house. One seems to hate Kirsten while the other is nice and is helping her out with learning how to ice skate better. Then things change and she likes both brothers. What's a girl to do?

I highly recommend this to any reader. You don't have to be a teen to enjoy this fun light hearted romance.

I really liked this book because it is about a bunch of teenagers having fun!!
Kristen is an eighteen year old girl that goes to help her older sister. Her sister, Gretchen had just broken her leg and needed some help taking care of her three year old son, Brett. While Kristen is up there her friends come up for New Years. It is a tradition that her and her friends make a list of New Year resolutions. One of Kristen's resolutions is to get a boyfriend and bring him to Groundhog Getaway. Meanwhile she meets a really nice boy named Sean whoshe really likes! The next morning she thinks she hears Sean shoveling outside. She jumps out of bed to go greet him. She nearly tackles him with a hug when she finds out it isn't Sean it is his twin brother, Conor. Conor seems a little selfish and rude so Kristen isn't really attracted to him. Sean goes away for a week so Kristen tries to become friends with Conor. By the time Sean gets back Kristen doesn't know which boy she really likes. Sean asks Kristen to the Snow Ball and she says yes! While she is there she meets up with Conor and they decide to leave the Ball because they aren't having fun. While Kristen and Conor are on their way home Kristen asks Conor if he would go to Groundhog Getaway with her and her friends. He answers quickly saying yes! They both go and have a great time together!
I recommend this book to any girl that likes books about problems in a relationship because that is what this book is about.

I am actually living for the summer in one of the towns (Elim) that is along the Iditarod race trail. In this book, Tim Jones chronicles the 1979 race which he followed by small prop plane. His book gives an excellent combination of suspenseful race details, villiage histories, and quirky biographies of the people associated with this great race. Fascinating reading for anyone on the "outside," as Alaskans call the people of the lower 48. Expose yourself to a different world and read this never dull book. I found myself racing to the finish just like the participants - on little sleep, exhausted, but exhilarated.

I'm a NOLS grad and was asked to do a class for our local Boy Scout troop on winter camping and snow shelters. I picked up a copy of NOLS Winter Camping and found it to be a fantastic resource. The illustrations were very helpful and the instruction was well organized, easy to read and use. The kids are going camping this weekend and they will be sleeping in a snow cave.

Good but could be better.

This was a very good book for somebody who is just getting into winter camping. The information is solid and reliable, and it is laid out in a very readable fashion. I have other books by Buck Tilton, and his writing style is always very engaging, Unfortunately, my initial excitement that NOLS (The National Outdoor Leadership School) had finally brought out a guide to winter camping, was dampened by the basic nature of the material. I look to NOLS to challenge and expand my knowledge base, and although I am an experienced winter adventurer, I am hardly an expert. I was also disappointed that what are known as "traditional" winter travel and camping techniques receive almost no mention, except for two scant paragraphs on snowshoes.

As I stated, the book is good, and is a worthy addition to any winter recreation library. But if you are just getting into the activity, I would steer you towards Stephen Gorman's "Winter Camping, 2nd Edition" (1999, Appalachian Mountain Club) as a better guide on how to get into what is referred to by some guides as "the undiscovered season."

I know and have known quite a people who worked with Sonja or were as close a friend as she would permit and this book seems to confirm all that I've heard over the last 40 years. I met Sonja in 1963 in Pittsburgh at the opening of the Pittsburgh Arena. Despite all her shortcomings as a person, there was something about her that fascinates me as a skater and as a person. Anyone interested in skating should read this book.

A STUNNING BOOK

As one of the critics says; this i s indeed a pageturner... However, there are numerous faults facts in this book. Among them includes that the film IT`S A PLEASURE was a Fox film. Wrong, it was produced by International and released by RKO. Several critical comments on her films are stolen from among others Leslie Halliwell, a notable filmcritic and the ONLY bible for moviebuffs until internet movie database came along. Stories of Sonja and Tyrone are also way over the top; the talk they had in the dressingroom - how did Leif Henie and Raymond Strait get hold of t h a t? Leif was still in Norway at the time. However. There are several items that distinguish this biography; the stories by Sonja`s secretary Dorothy Stevens in particular... It is true that in creating the ice-skating star Sonja Henie, her father created a monster. But in the long run Sonja suffered from it. She was never taught to be a normal person. And indeed: She gave Norway a place in the sun and donated with her third husband Niels Onstad the Henie-Onstad ArtGallery near Oslo. U should visit it if u came to Norway. All of Sonja`s medals and trophies are in a well-guarded room and photos etc from her films are displayed in a huge basement. It must never be forgotten that she gave our nation a great deal - indeed giving the community of Bærum a home for retired people. U WILL see this reading this book that she was a trouper - a woman who was taught to fight and be competetive. And everything she tried her hands on - became lucrative.

Einar Svensson has put an amazing level of effort and care into producing "Ski Skating With Champions: How to Ski With Least Energy," and it shows.

Trying to capture Cross-Country Skiing technique and be comprehensive yet concise, is nearly an impossible task for a written work, multimedia, or video. Einar Svensson has contributed an important work to the sport.

If you are a serious xc skier, then you have to have this book as a reference on your shelf. I do.

Extensive Work

Review Date: 2000-08-24
A lot of work went into writing Ski Skating With Champions. It dissects ski skating like no other book before it. Many intermediate level skiers will find it thought provoking.

The expert and elite skiers many find a variety of technical errors, or that the text is overly complex - lacks a consolidated and simple understanding of skiing, but for the sport racer the book is a good one to have on the shelf. I also recommend "Tao of Skiing" which takes an entirely different approach.

Detailed, analytical approach
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-15
Mr. Svensson's book presents detailed analyses of 17 skate skiing techniques and more. I really liked that each technique was presented in a several different ways. Anyone who has teaching experience knows that two different students may find different approaches to a subject more effective. As to 'technical errors' found by 'elite skiers' I have a feeling nordic skiiers are like musicians. It is said that the only thing two musicians can agree on is the incompetence of a third. Indeed there are a variety of tweeks and variations on each technique that will prove to be effective for each skiier. This book provides ample material for a starting point. This is a really amazing book.

Too Technical

Review Date: 2008-04-02
This book is way too technical for the average reader. If you are a professional, then you should check it out. I'm not really sure if it would be helpful since I'm not a professional, but the book really analyzes every aspect of performance in snowboarding. It is not too enjoyable if you are not that into snowboarding and even if you are, you would not probably want to read it. Pictures are nice, though.

Extremely in-depth reference to snowboarding

Review Date: 2001-09-19
I received this book as a birthday present. After browsing the table of contents you start to realize its depth. It's broken down into three major sections: racing, freeriding, and freestyle.

The book goes over the mechanics, but also heavily focuses on mental aspect of snowboarding. It explains methods on how to visualize and execute. It even recommends external activities, like Yoga, to bridge the gap between body and mind.

I felt the best value of this book were the sections on overcoming and controlling fear after a serious injury. Which, unfortunately, I know a lot about. It also stresses the seriousness of properly rehabilitating after injury/surgery.

This book is for people serious about snowboarding. It probably isn't suited for 11 year old children. After reading some sections, I almost felt like I need further explanation from a psychologist to completely understand what I was reading.

Overall, great book.

With a color illustration on each page the book appeals to younger children, but the words are about right for 6 - 8 year olds. The book captures the excitement of a close game. The players are girls, but who cares! My 7 year old read it by himself and loved it. We are going to buy a copy to donate to his class. It is the best basketball book for this age range we have found so far.

We had purchased this book for our daughter a few years ago...Daddy is a basketball coach, so, needless to say, basketball is our life! Our daughter loved this book and it has been read aloud many times - a great book to read together. By now, the whole family knows the story by heart!

When our son was born, we got the book out to read to him & he immediately loved it, as well. But, Sissy was worried about her favorite book being destroyed by her little brother - so we had to purchase another copy :) Our son is only 17 months, but this is one of his favorite stories.

Incidentally, I believe the story was co-authored by Bill Martin who worked with Eric Carle on classics such as "Polar Bear, Polar Bear." The illiustrations are great - now if they could just release it in a board book format so it will hold up to my little one...

Definitely recommended for any basketball fan!
