Very good book if you don't know which beach resort to go to in Mexico. We knew we were going to Ixtapa but had never been to Mexico before. This book had the most comprehensive information on Ixtapa compared to others I looked at on the shelf. Written very lighthearted, honest and to the point. Good general information in the first couple of chapters about traveling into Mexico and what to expect (money, food, customs, culture, etc.). I found that the information was very acurate in its referrals in all areas (restaurants, lodging, places to go, night spots). I will keep this book to help me make a decision on which place to visit in Mexico next trip!

for the Olympics. This is an excellent pre-travel reference for anyone planning to attend the Summer Olympics in Sydney this year. The historical background will help to bring the city to life, from its beginnings as a penal colony to its growth into one of the world's truly great cities.

Sydney started out as a landing place for convicts from Great Britain. But from those humble beginnings, it has grown into one of the world's great cities. This is a "must read" for anyone planning a trip Down Under any time soon. The insights provided by the author will help the Australian visitor have a much better understanding of the city before him. With the Olympics coming soon to Sydney, the timing of this release couldn't have been better. This is a book worth the investment of time and money. You'll enjoy it.

I'm in my 20's and live in the rural midwest. A far cry from the late 1800's settlement in Maine that the author writes about. Jewett's stories are more character sketches than plot driven prose. For some, this may be boring, but for me - there were times when the sentences she wrote were perfect ... quotes to write down and revisit after the story. Significant words for today still. The stories detail rural life - island visiting, gossip, fishing, romance, a ghost story, patriotism and more. The book is like a walk down a small town's main street - things to see and hear, but nothing if you don't look.

I got The Country of the Pointed Firs at my library before I consulted Amazon reviews, and really knew nothing about it except the publication date and that the setting is in Maine. After reading it, I came to Amazon to order a copy and was absolutely amazed to see no reviews! So here I am and believe me, this little book is a stunner. When I began reading it, I liked it, but put it aside to read something else. When I picked it back up, the more I read, the more involved I became and this time I just didn't put it down. I truthfully COULDN'T put it down - I was almost hypnotized by the rhythm of the words - literally rocking with the flow of the pages! I have never experienced this with a book in my 60 years or reading. When I finished the book, I immediately started back on page 1, and re-read the entire thing. Although it's about a time that we can only imagine, I found myself filling it with post-it stickers to mark sentences and pages that are personal and uncannily timely.

Justice, for the Innocent and the Guilty

Review Date: 2002-05-28
The book documents certain cases of Gardner's "Court of Last Resort". This court is the highest of the land, which Gardner felt was not the Supreme Court of the United States, but the court of the people of America. The book documents several cases of men who found themselves tried and convicted of crimes. In many cases, they were innocent. In other cases, they were guilty. Gardner's task force served the cause of justice.

What is most astounding about this book is the insights as to how things go around and come around. In this case, Gardner argues against life/no parole sentences for "habitual criminals". 50 years later we see the same kind of laws passed, life/no parole for "3 strikes" offenders. Right or wrong, it's just another issue that resurfaced in a different form.

Living in North Lake Tahoe for over 33 years cross-country skiing has become one of my great passions. In the winter months I spend four to five days a week skate skiing for fitness and pleasure. After all this time I figured I knew just about all I needed to about the ski areas in and around my home, but was I wrong. A short time into Tim's book I had already gathered new information and ideas for some exciting excursions both close to home and a day trip away. I would recommend this informative, fun book to both experienced and novice cross-country skiers. Also, if you have thought about cross-country skiing but haven't had the chance to try it, this is also the book for you. It will help you make some good decisions on where and how to start this great sport. Now, get out there and have some fun!

Great guide to Sierra Nevada XC skiing

With brevity and charm, Hauserman shares his thorough knowledge about local and regional cross-country ski areas. (There are 13 between Mt. Shasta and Yosemite.) Anyone yearning to get out there on skinny skies - either as a novice or as a veteran looking beyond the everyday workout - should buy this book. For beginning skiers, Hauserman breaks down the complexities of this oft-misunderstood sport and tells where to get more help on the web or at local ski shops when you need it. For veterans, he provides ski maps, directions, resort highlights, activities and even a little natural history. The chapters and guide entries are straightforward. During his two-plus years of field research, Hauserman explored thousands of kilometers of trails and ate in every resort restaurant (for research, of course!). He checked out local lodgings and interviewed managers and local skiers. The end result is a book that clarifies details and whets appetites for the best of the Sierra Nevada's groomed resort terrain.

this is a wonderful book for anyone who grew up in the saranac lake/adirondack area. it brings home lots of memories of the area and days gone by. i found the photos extremely interesting. for anyone who grew up in the area, as i did, you will find yourself transported back in time to houses of your friends or houses you may have occupied growing up here. i found this all very nostalgic. the text is extremely informative. you need not be interested in tb to enjoy this book, but it does give you a interesting background of tb and the growth of saranac lake.

I first read this book 16 years ago. I have never forgotten it; it is one of my favorite books. Why? It blends architecture with medical necessity, family issues and social needs at the turn of the century. The idea that people could be cured (or not) by the winter weather of Saranac lake, with its extremely low humidity and extreme cold (40 degrees below zero days not uncommon), made tubercular people leave their children and families to go north to this tuberculosis treatment hospital while living in the town of Saranac. They'd bundle up in a cure cottage's glassed in porch, lying on an Adirondack cot made of wood, a cross between an ultra-sturdy deck chair on an ocean liner, and a hospital bed. Robert Louis Stevenson lived in his own home in Saranac lake, and Christy Mathewson was treated there also (He died of TB.) The history of tuberculosis is interesting not just from a medical, but an historical and social point of view. Anyone who enjoys architectural history will find this coffeetable style book of black and white photographs and informative text interesting. This Adirondack area is one of rich history, with the cure cottages of Saranac, the large country "cabins" of the rich New York city moguls, the Olympics in Lake Placid, and the artistry of outdoorsman Frederick Remington. This book is a wonderful addition to your historic architecture collection. It brings a long-forgotten chapter of medical care and historical architecture to life.

Dulcie's Gift by Ruth Langan
Harlequin Historical # 324 - July 1996

The three Jermain sons have returned to their plantation on Jermain Island, discovering that their parents are deceased. Remaining is their father's sister. Each man bears emotional scars from the war they are returning from. After a bitter Atlantic storm, the oldest brother sights a small boat adrift off shore. To his amazement the boat bears three woman and four children, all badly shaken from their journey. With the aid of Cal's brothers and his aunt, they quickly take in the castaways.

Dulcie will keep safe her little family of orphans, no matter what. She's taken them all in and offered whatever she could of the little that was left after the pillage of the war. When evil came to her door and threatened to destroy them she did what needed to be done. Dulcie must hide the truth from the generous Jermains and prays that evil doesn't follow from the mainland.

This is one of those books that when you finish it you simply say WOW. Ms. Langan writes a very powerful story. Every character is so complete that you feel that you know them all to their very hearts. The tragedy of war has left them all in deep emotional pain, and yet together they heal their hearts and find that the future can be happy again. The chemistry between Cal and Dulcie is wonderfully written; their love story is truly heart touching. A most excellent read!

Ruth Langan's Dulcie's Gift was the first romance novel I had ever read. It has been seven years since, and I still can't get enough from her. The caracters come alive before your eyes. This book gives you another view of the south after the civil war(differant than Scarlet's and in my opion more realistic). Cal and Dulcie show the best and worst that love can give. They open their eyes and others to truths neither can see on their own. This book is a great example of what love can endure. It was my first look in to the romantic world of books and has remainded in my library ever since. I definitly recomend you read it, own it, and love it.

I just finished reading both of Brown's books on the New York Times best seller list, and Richard Crabbe's book is every bit as worthy of making the list. Richard combines a descriptive, sometimes violent but thoughtful style of writing that puts you in the hunt for Jim Tupper in what must be a breathtaking part of the country- It's fast, sometimes furious and a quality mystery/thriller... Dan Brown, you have company!

In August 1889, Mohawk Indian Jim Tupper kills a Manhattan construction site foreman. Although the police catch him, he breaks free when the Black Maria he?s transported in has an accident. He buys a bayonet before making his way by boat to his home in the Adirondack Mountains where he signs on at the logging camp owned and run by industrialist William West Durant.

At the same time Tupper is making his way home, New York Detective Bureau Chief Tom Braddock and his family vacation at the Prospect House resort hotel. Tom?s son Mike has taken up with the housemaid Lellie and when she is murdered, the local doctor thinks he is the killer. When Tom learns that via telegraph that Tupper is in the area and the maid was murdered by a bayonet, he believes Tupper is the killer. Tom sets out to bring this killer back so that his son?s name will be cleared, but the savvy Indian leads Tom and the authorities on a difficult chase that leads to a greater tragedy for all concerned.

THE EMPIRE OF SHADOWS is an action-packed historical thriller that gives the audience chills, thrills and a sense of adventure. Throughout the whole story line, readers will feel as if they don?t see the full picture because the audience senses there is more than just a killer on a rampage yet everything points to one killer in plain sight. That magic and the ability of Richard E. Crabbe to bring to life a bygone golden age that will never be seen again turns this work into a breathtaking tale.

Just got this book. All I can say is that it's great. Gave me lots of ideas for places to take a fishing vacation that I hadn't really considered before. And when they say for ALL budgets they mean it! There are some real bargains in the book as well as some super nice places. They've even listed places you can only hike to or ride a boat to or take a plane.... Highly recommended!

My wife bought my son and I copies for Christmas. It's been an indespenable help! It's easy to locate a place that meets the requirements of those traveling in your party. I've never thought enough of a book to take the time to write a review, but Simpson did his homework so you don't have to. The descriptions listed contained all the info I needed, plus some. I've already made reservations for my spring trip! It's a bed and breakfast so my wife is even looking forward to this trip. TRAVELING FISHERMEN NEED TO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS BOOK BEFORE THEIR NEXT TRIP....
