The inside scoop on the ultimate beach resort experience!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-14
I recently returned from a trip to Cancun with my husband. This book was the ultimate guide to where to stay, how to save money, all the romantic getaways, and inside advice on the best day trips and best water sports. It rained a few times while we were there, and this book came in handy when we couldn't find anything to do.

Old Honolulu's Remarkable History
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-07
As a long-time resident of Honolulu (23 years) as I was growing up (we moved there in 1965), I developed a great love of Hawaiian history. This fine book, with its wealth of photographs of the early days of the late 19th century and early 20th, is a treasure. The written history is also very informative and well done. If you are interested in the development of Honolulu, the passing of the Hawaiian monarchy and Honolulu as it once was, this is a fantastic book. It made me sad for what Honolulu has become and wistful for days long past...

A Glimpse Back In Time
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-19
This book was a real find for my family who has recently become a summer resident at Virginia Beach. This resort has changed faces so many times over just the last couple of decades, it is a real treat to see the transformations over the last century. The photographs tell the story themselves but author Yarsinke adds much feeling and background with her narrative. This book is a wonderful photographic history for those familier with the Va Coast and those who are simply U.S. history buffs. Our family has put this on our beach house coffee table to always remind us of the background stories of our vacation spot.

Great Guide to RV Parks
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-23
We have used Wheelers RV Resort and Campground Guide for years and have never found another guide as comprehensive, reliable and easy to use. If you are looking for the ideal companion to your camping or RVing adventure, this is the book to own. Plus, you can make reservations via a toll-free number at any of the RV resorts or campgrounds who advertise in the book. But don't think this is just a book of advertised parks. Virtually every campground in North America is here, even small county or state parks. With clear directions on how to find them. And if you ever find a campground not listed there is a form in the back to send in. You can even help the publishers rate the campgrounds one to four stars using the same form. It is the only guide which asks its users to help keep the ratings accurate.

Highly recommended for anyone who likes to take to the road. Whether you have an RV or a tent, this is a great resource.

RATINGS BY ACTUAL TRAVELERS
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-15
What I like most about Zagat Surveys is the fact that, although Zagat works with travel agents to get information about the properties that are listed, the actual raters are not publicitists or travel agents. They are, in fact, people who have stayed at the resorts or hotels being rated, people who have stayed there, eaten there, used the facilities such as pools and spas, and who have experienced the hotels' service, both good, bad, and indifferent, and have no vested interest in reporting what they like or dislike.

Propertiy ratings cover the following categories: Rooms, Service, Dining, and Public Space. Costs given are the high season rack rates for standard double rooms. Since the ratings are averages of a great number of responses, individual biases probably don't affect them very much.

Properties are listed by country, city within the country, where applicable, and then in alphabetical order.

For convenience, there are a great number of cross references such as: Golf, Hiking, Historical Interest, Pet-Friendly, etc., and even by availability of Fireplaces.

Comments are those of people who have stayed in the properties, and range from raves to "rants."

All in all, If you are looking for an upper end hotel or resort almost anywhere in the world, this Zagat Survey should be of help.

Chris is insane, but in a good way.

It took me a while to discover Christopher Moore, but when I did, I had to get 9 of his books (excluding Lamb, so far) and read, read, read! Of the 9, The Stupidest Angel is my 2nd favorite. The book takes all of the quirkiness, hilarity and absurdity of the cast of characters introduced in his novels, Practical Demonkeeping and The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove, and brings them to the pinnacle of madcap psychosis. Out of 5 stars, I would actually give this book a 6. When you sit down to read this book, get ready to expect the unexpected and wonder, "did he just say that???" I certainly hope that this cast of misfits and oddballs appears again.

somewhat surreal, somewhat silly, wholely enjoyable

Readers will get the most out of this book if they have read other novels by the author, because this one incorporates characters from almost all of his previous works. In effect, even though the story itself is new, it's a "greatest hits" package of interesting people culled from Moore's earlier efforts. You can still read it without knowing the characters (as I had about three Christmasses ago) but it probably won't be as "fun."

As with most of Moore's works, a slightly macabre sense of humor is needed, so if the idea of a zombie Santa doesn't already have you chuckling, you probably won't like this.

I will say that the ending hit one of my major writing pet-peeves, but sadly I can't explain that without giving it away. However, the rest of the book was humorous enough to make up for that, and admittedly it probably is the only way the book could have ended, especially if Moore plans to revisit this setting in the future.

All in all, recommended, especially as a Christmas present to those sick friends of yours whose favorite holidays are either Haloween or April Fool's.

I normally really enjoy his books, but this one really didn't appeal to me. Being familiar with the characters and location was fine, but the story lacked his usual creativity.

I have read 3 of Moore's other books. This one pales in comparison to his usual output.

Moore takes his usual writing characteristics and exaggerates them. This creates a book that is boring and unreadable, unlike the pleasantly quirky books he usually writes. Moore has a gift for taking various different threads and then making it all fit together. Not so here. The story feels weak and disconnected. The characters are not believable either. They are polarized to the point of being absurd.

Perhaps this is the effect Moore was going for. If it was, then it was not my cup of tea.
