Healing Waters: Missouri's Historic Mineral Springs And Spas is a straight forward history of the use and development of mineral
springs in Missouri from 1800 to the 1930s. From the earliest spa traditions in America and Missouri's frontier spas to the
businesses that flourished bottling mineral waters, the nature of mineralized groundwater resources, the repercussions of
establishing saltworks at the state's saline springs, and more, Healing Waters offers a thoroughly researched, in-depth historical
tour. Healing Waters concludes with a survey of why mineral springs fell into disuse, with a particular eye on how discoveries
in microbiology and biochemistry led to a general repudiation of mineral water health benefits in favor of drug-related treatments.
An excellent sourcebook, as approachable to the lay reader as to the historian.

Judicial Selection Method Is Important

This book presents arguments that the manner in which state Supreme Court Justices ascend to office, either by public election,
Gubernatorial appointment, or legislatively selected, impacts their tendencies to decide cases in several legal areas. This
conclusion differs from general Political Science thought that the manner in which Justices are picked for office makes little
to no difference on how they ultimately decide cases.
The author concludes that groups with little political and/or economic power fare best with Supreme Court Justices who are appointed. This is important as members of these powerless groups require innovative state Supreme Court decisions to obtain remedies they have been unable to achieve from conservative leaning federal courts. Elected state Supreme Court Justices tend to make more traditional stances and sun the innovative decisions.
The book examines state Supreme Court decisions on similar issues in business law, criminal law, and family law in six states: two with elected Justices (Pennsylvania and West Virginia), two with Gubernatorial appointed Justices (New Jersey and Connecticut), and two states where legislatures select the Justices (Virginia and Rhode Island). 36 issues were chosen. This is a statistically signficiant sample size. Considering the multitude of decisions these courts make and the subjectiveness in comparing decisions where specific facts may vary, the argument can continue as to whether these conclusions may be broadly reached and whether these differences would occur in different times. Still, this is a remarkable study that combines case studies and backs these studies backed with statistical evidence. It is highly recommended to those wishing to learn more about Supreme Court decisions.

My mother was visiting with me and was telling me what a good book this was for building our trust in God and then at the
end of the book the publishing company had omitted 16 pages from 105 to 121. She really enjoyed the book and would like to
read the omitted pages. Could you please help us to secure this pages. Thank you and God Bless.

Scranton Times-Tribune, July 31, 2007
by Libby Nelson
At first, Alan Sweeney's postcards were just something cheap to collect -- a quarter or two apiece, $5 if the card was really rare.
Now the Lackawanna Historical Society president has turned some of his 35-year-old collection into a book exploring the history of resorts in the Pocono Mountains.
The book, "Journey Along the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad," uses postcards dating from the 1880s through the 1930s to show the development of the region's resort industry.
"I like to do stories that people don't know a lot about," said Mr. Sweeney, who has co-written two other books about local history. "Very few people knew about the resort industry, how big it was at the time in the Poconos. Those are the stories that I like."
When Mr. Sweeney began his collection, he chose postcards from places that meant something to him: Lake George, where his family vacationed; Scranton and Lackawanna County; Moosic Lake, where they had a cottage. He chose Pocono Mountain cards because his first summer job had been at a resort there, he said.
He bought cards from estate sales and flea markets. At one point, he had more than 10,000 cards.
"I've sold of a lot of them because I didn't know what to do with them," Mr. Sweeney said.
He kept the cards from Moosic Lake, which he used for his 2005 book, "Gateway to the Clouds: The Story of a Short Line Railroad, the Scranton, Dunmore, Moosic Lake Railroad -- 1902-1926."
He also kept the cards from the Pocono Mountains and, after publishing "Gateway to the Clouds," Mr. Sweeney began considering a use for them as well.
He had begun researching Pocono Mountain resorts in the 1990s, but had never finished. After publishing "Gateway to the Clouds," he began the research again, using local libraries and historical societies.
The result was the story of a century of vacationing in the Pocono Mountains, beginning in the 1840s and continuing up to the beginning of World War II.
"We all heard about these inns, boarding houses and resorts, but we never actually saw the old ones," Mr. Sweeney said.
The book has sold about 400 of its initial 500 copies, he said.
"You don't make money on local books," Mr. Sweeney said. "You have 12 million copies of the Harry Potter book. We sell maybe 1,000 or 1,500."
Mr. Sweeney will be promoting the book through lectures and book signings throughout the region.

All right - let's just get this out into the open. I love - no, LOVE, Knoebels Amusement Resort. A lovely, family-owned
park in Elysburg, Pennsylvania, it stands as the ideal traditional amusement park, filled with historic charm, thrills for
the adventurous, and romance for the nostalgic. It's a landmark in my book, and I'm ecstatic that a pictorial book on its
history and present times has been published.
Knoebels is, indeed, a park that embraces its history, still owned and operated by its founding family. Vintage rides, many of which are considered the best of their kind, coexist peacefully among newer examples, and everything is enhanced and embraced by trees, campsites, a roaring creek and the mountains of Pennsylvania. This book celebrates all of these wonderful aspects that make Knoebels so special, spanning from the early days right up to today. Harry J. Deitz delves deeply into the Knoebels family's stories of old, exploring the events, personalities, mishaps and decisions that combined to make the park what it is. The chapters are arranged beautifully, and graced with many great old photos, ranging from the early 1900's through modern times.
Whether you're a die-hard Knoebels fan, a lover of old amusement parks, or just appreciative of the role that such parks have played in the American cultural landscape, this book is for you. So much information, so many wonderful images, such great stories - it all makes for a most uniquely enjoyable book.
