This book is a wonderful tribute to the gradeur of an amazing time in American History. These hotels are just spectacular, they really just don't have the masons or the desire quite frankly, to build buildings like this anymore. The black and white images in this book are simply breath taking, they are so crisp and elegant. The reader really gets a feel for what the hotels looked like at their inseption, at the time they where inspired. The Jazz Age was an era of unbelieveble wealth for a lucky few and they enjoyed spending it and expected only the best, there was a real sence of America starting her accendency to greatness and the affluent wanted to show that the best of America could rival anything in Europe, this was the catalist for these sumptuous hotels. The Jazz Age is of course long gone, but we have examples, like these grand hotels, to remind of an era of opulent wealth..and no income tax.

You can't really tell this from a website, but its a woman's dream for a book. The cover is made of this rubberish material, with the words from the cover almost engraved or pressed into the book. Really creative. Inside holds the secrets of the bests spas all over the world, and reading it you just HAVE to figure out how to get to these places so you can feel just as nice as they say you will! If you are thinking about going to a spa resort, this is a must-have resource. You'll be able to decide exactly where you want to go, and the book has all the contact information neccessary in an index at the back. And if you just want to be whisked away for a day-dream, this is a great resource for that too! Not only is the text very helpful, but the pictures are beautiful as well. Enjoy!

This is a well written book, very informative and interesting. The author obviously cares about the City of Waukesha and it's history. It's quite a different town today, of course....but the author does a great job taking you back to a time where springs were abundant!
John Schoenknecht is an award winning local historian--you won't be disappointed with this book.

My only regret is that this book is out-of-print; however, if one is planning a ski vacation anywhere in the Alps, this book is priceless. Claire Walter, of Skiing Magazine, lists ski areas for each country as a chapter. Each area is decribed succintly including statistics and trail maps. Each resort is rated from 1 to 10 for snow and skiing conditions,apres-ski, other sports and value for money. The pictures of each resort area make one drool! We have used it 4 times and it works. Pray for a new publication of this guide.

Natural Mineral Hot Springs - the (nearly) complete list

It's almost impossible to find one spot, even online, that tells you every place in the world where you can enjoy such delicious natural spring waters. In California, we are fortunate to have Desert Hot Springs so close by. The Europeans have enjoyed their benefits for eons. Italy even makes them available to all its citizens as part of their entitlement to good health. Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, have many, even Mexico has. So many are listed here for us so that we Americans, too, can know from which to choose to go. This book is a rare treat.

Healing Waters: Missouri's Historic Mineral Springs And Spas is a straight forward history of the use and development of mineral springs in Missouri from 1800 to the 1930s. From the earliest spa traditions in America and Missouri's frontier spas to the businesses that flourished bottling mineral waters, the nature of mineralized groundwater resources, the repercussions of establishing saltworks at the state's saline springs, and more, Healing Waters offers a thoroughly researched, in-depth historical tour. Healing Waters concludes with a survey of why mineral springs fell into disuse, with a particular eye on how discoveries in microbiology and biochemistry led to a general repudiation of mineral water health benefits in favor of drug-related treatments. An excellent sourcebook, as approachable to the lay reader as to the historian.

There is a growing tide of publications bearing photographs of Palm Beach County in the Flagler Era. In sympathy with the "Kennedy" review, there is something about 'Historic Photos - ' which gives it an extra appeal. It may be the contribution of Seth Bramson which carries with it a good bit of style. Of especial interest to this reviewer was the picture of the legendary Royal Poinciana Hotel, which I had not seen before. Truly, it was a beautiful structure. We all should like books to be cheaper; but for the entire package (Mr. Bramson, choice, and history), this one is worth it.

Turner Publishing has raised the bar again with Historic Photos of Palm Beach County. They couldn't have done a better job with author Seth Bramson. Although I am not from Florida, I have read the book and found it to be extremely informative. Just reading this book makes me want to at least visit Palm Beach County! This would make a terrific holiday gift for anyone who loves books.

Judicial Selection Method Is Important

This book presents arguments that the manner in which state Supreme Court Justices ascend to office, either by public election, Gubernatorial appointment, or legislatively selected, impacts their tendencies to decide cases in several legal areas. This conclusion differs from general Political Science thought that the manner in which Justices are picked for office makes little to no difference on how they ultimately decide cases.
The author concludes that groups with little political and/or economic power fare best with Supreme Court Justices who are appointed. This is important as members of these powerless groups require innovative state Supreme Court decisions to obtain remedies they have been unable to achieve from conservative leaning federal courts. Elected state Supreme Court Justices tend to make more traditional stances and sun the innovative decisions.
The book examines state Supreme Court decisions on similar issues in business law, criminal law, and family law in six states: two with elected Justices (Pennsylvania and West Virginia), two with Gubernatorial appointed Justices (New Jersey and Connecticut), and two states where legislatures select the Justices (Virginia and Rhode Island). 36 issues were chosen. This is a statistically signficiant sample size. Considering the multitude of decisions these courts make and the subjectiveness in comparing decisions where specific facts may vary, the argument can continue as to whether these conclusions may be broadly reached and whether these differences would occur in different times. Still, this is a remarkable study that combines case studies and backs these studies backed with statistical evidence. It is highly recommended to those wishing to learn more about Supreme Court decisions.
