Very interesting account of an Eurasian American college student's search for his ancestors in China. This book is a real page turner, even for those who have no interest or knowledge of China. Travelers will get a realistic overview of the Chinese history and culture. Very Funny! Well worth the price!

This book was so amazing I read it twice! It is a funny, witty, educational story which really makes you feel like a part of the author's journey. His story is honest and fullfilling. The reader does not even need know much about China to be greatly entertained. I would suggest this book to anyone. I hope the author writes again...Horray for Beadle Lu!

This book combines the funniest "travel stories" I have ever read with lots of useful information including history, very practical travel tips, and a wonderfully insightful analysis of how recent changes in China have affected her people. The author steadfastly avoids any and all "travelogue cliches"- his account is all the more hilarious (and informative) for its brutal honesty.

In addition to all of this, there is a delightful plot twist (related to the title) that is both touching and hysterically funny. (And good plot twists are sometimes hard to find in travel memoirs.) This is one of the most entertaining books I have ever read!

Maybe it's because I'm something of a nature girl, but something about this book just tugged at my soul. And to think that the basic idea is to get us to learn basic signs of woodland animals. But even as this goes on we get a lovely story about a pair of siblings wandering in the beautiful snowy woods, an aura that lends itself through the pretty narrative and the drop-dead gorgeous illustrations that lend themselves to all perspectives. The ending is sweet, and I love the extra page that gives basic animal facts.

Two children have to go sledding without a sled. On the way they see evidence of animals and guess what they were. Would have been better if the illustrations would have shown the footprints, when appropriate. Saving grace: the blurbs at the end that explain how the children knew which animal had been there. Contains excellent black and white illustrations and will be of interest to the students from the 3rd grade through the 7th grade levels.

This is the most comprehensive book I have come accross describing all the aspects in one's job search. One will find valuable information in regards to the job search: learning (or finding out) about oneself, defining both personal and professional priorities, self-marketing aspect of the job search, outplacement services, recruiting and networking efforts, interview process approach and salary negotiations. Book is a gem and it gives very valuable reference material information on other books valuable for job seekers and professionals; as well as inventory of reputable recruiting firms and other useful information. A wonderful read...informative.Photographs are ready for framing. Definitely will inspire you to begin to collect Indian clubs. As stated by Gerard Wertkin, Director, Museum of American Folk Art, "(Alice Hoffman) has recovered an all but forgotten subchapter in the history of American sport and, at the same time, helped us appreciate another aspect of American artistic creativity. Hats off to her!" I agree with Mr. Wertkin and the following reviews: Antiques & Auction News, "A colorful exercise in collecting,"..."documents the "life" of this colorful and practical form of exercise...a charming addition to any antiques library." Antique & Collectibles News Service, "Inside Antiques, Good Reading,"..."we love (this) book...a folk art gem." Antiques Review, "The Bookshelf,"..."Superb color photographs...Fascinating archival material." Denver Post, "What's Up,"..."If you're searching for the most unusual art book of the year don't overlook Indian Clubs." Maine Antiques Digest, "Books, Calendars, CD-ROMS,"..."a case for Indian clubs as folk art." The Star Ledger, NJ, "A new life for Indian clubs,"..."new coffee table book...If TV infomercials had been around in their heyday, chances are the physical fitness mavens of the day would have been pitching Indian clubs in the same way abs machines and treadmills are endlessly hawked now."

Alice Hoffman has uncovered a forgotten piece of American history and inspired me to begin collecting Indian clubs. Hoffman has written an informative book complete with stunning photographs and personal reflections.

Indian clubs now prized for their sculptural, artistic merits were once a must for every man, women, and child who hoped to obtain physical and spiritual well-being in the late 19th, early 20th century.

It's amazing to learn that Indian clubs were once thought to be an exercise that would stand the test of time. Hoffman has shown they have, not as muscle builders but as a collectible.

If you're interested in learning something new and not afraid of becoming an Indian club collecting addict as I have since reading this book, I suggest you order Indian Clubs today.

This book first came out when I was about the same age as Lissa, and having the same problems with being excluded from social cliques in school. I recently re-read it, and as the pain of that time in my life came back, I realized just how much the book helped me to realize that cliques weren't the be-all and end-all of my life...I only hope that the girls who did that to me also realized it in time.

This is a great book for girls who are dealing with cliques.

This book deserves to come back into print. It's a great read, and it deals with a topic that faces many girls in fifth and sixth grades - the cruelty of cliques. I recommend it to the girls who form the cliques and the girls who are excluded by them.

Lissa is smart and funny, but she's also made an enemy of Debra Dobbins, the most popular girl in her class, partly because Debra stole her three-color pen. All of a sudden, Lissa has no friends and is excluded from Debra's exclusive FUNCHY club. Lissa is caught between being her own person and being like everyone else. Lissa's reaction at the end of the book is wonderful. This is an extremely enjoyable story. Definitely worth reading!

A fascinating look at the lives of sailors of the past

Review Date: 1999-10-20
This book gives an extremely interesting account of the lives of sailors of both the United States and Britain in the age of sailing and steam-powered ships. Through artifacts gathered by nautical antiques collector (and founder of the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia) J. Welles Henderson, we discover what valued most to these men (and a few women) and get a taste of how they passsed their time. An extremely impressive array of images shows their handicrafts (scrimshaw, macramé, etc.), as well as pointing out the dangers and drudgery inherent in the sailors' lives. Topics cover everything from discipline at sea and sailor's misbehavior on shore to acts of piracy and available medical care. Both naval and merchant service experiences are explored. I only wish such a comprehensive volume had been available when I did the research for my novel A Star to Sail By, which features a sailor of the clipper ship era. I would recommend this book to anyone with a love of sea lore and a nostalgia for the age of the great sailing ships.

A life of collecting to understand a sailor's life.

Review Date: 2000-03-24
Welles Henderson started his maritime history collecting as a schoolboy when he invested 50 cents in the USS Constitution, aka Old Ironsides. His first piece was a small anchor, his reward for his contribution to the preservation of this revolutionary war masterpiece. After many years of collecting memorabilia of the sailor's life he started the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, now the Independence Seaport Museum. His intense interest in the shipboard life of Jack Tar comes out in the many illustrations, most in color, many drawn or painted by sailors. Most of these illustrations are of items that he has collected in his world travels. For those interested in the romantic adventures or the dull drudgery of shipboard life in the 19th century this book will be a welcome voyage.

James, the Sermon on the Mount, and 1 Corinthians 13

I became acquainted with Dick B. in a Bible fellowship. I spent almost a year with him in Hawaii, and I learned about his intense interest in the biblical roots of early A.A. I certainly heard him speak over and over about how the early AAs considered the Book of James, Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, and 1 Corinthians 13 to be absolutely essential to their program. But Dick didn't elaborate much because I don't think he had completed his research and analysis. But then came this book. It is a detailed study of the verses in the three Bible segments in comparison with relevant ideas in A.A. literature. I felt as if I were being introduced to the real "old school A.A." which had such great success and where Dr. Bob, the leader in Akron, repeatedly mentioned these three segments of the Bible in connection with A.A. The mystery is over. Here's a book that told me how and why James, the Sermon, and Corinthians were so important to the cure of alcoholism the A.A. pioneers achieved.

The James Club attraction, A.A. & the Book of James

Review Date: 2006-11-20
For a number of years, author Dick B. has presented pieces on early A.A.'s Christian Fellowship, its stress on Bible study and prayer meetings, and the importance of three segments of the Bible. These three segments are: (1) Book of James. (2) Jesus's Sermon on the Mount. (3) 1 Corinthians 13. And Dr. Bob said at a talk in Youngstown, Ohio that AAs start their day by reading one of the three. He also said that all three were absolutely essential in the original program. Dick B. therefore felt it was specially valuable for AAs, 12 Steppers, and Christians to have before them a verse by verse study of each of the segments, and a specific correlation of those verses to portions of A.A.'s Big Book and Twelve Steps that borrowed from them. This James Club book was a long time in coming because it necessitated an examination of many different A.A. sources--Anne Smith's Journal, the devotionals, Dr. Bob's library, the Oxford Group literature, Quiet Time literature, Step Guides, and Big Book study works to bring it all together. Dick also felt it important to include materials discussing the Book of James itself and the probable authorship of it by the Lord's brother. He also added materials on A.A.'s United Christian Endeavor roots which help to explain how the Bible achieved such a prominent role in the early fellowship. And here's a book that allows you to do what the pioneers did--study these books themselves. Have a ready guide to the relationship between the verses and A.A. writings. Use it as a tutorial for your study group. Realize it can be a catalyst for organizing Big Book/Bible study groups now that there is an in depth study of these three core Bible sources of A.A. ideas. I welcomed the new insight Dick's presentation gave me on patience, God's wisdom, temptation, being a doer of the Word, the significance to James of "love thy neighbor as thyself," the core idea of submitting yourselves to God and resisting the devil--knowing the devil will flee from you, the important 5th chapter on prayer and healing. Then the materials in the Sermon that were direct sources of Step ideas. And finally the principles from Corinthians, such as kindness, truthfulness, tolerance that have become embedded in A.A. thinking and language.

Dick B.'s recently revised title, The James Club and the Original A.A. Program's Absolute Essentials, 4th ed. is a book that every A.A. member, study group member, church group, treatment center, or counselor should have in their personal library. In Dick B.=s The James Club and The Original A.A. Program's Absolute Essentials, 4th ed., you will find all the important verses from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 to 7), the Book of James, and 1 Corinthians 13 discussed, analyzed, and presented in terms of its specific relevance to A.A.=s ideas, Big Book, Twelve Steps, and the cures in Akron=s Christian Fellowship. This is a perfect book to utilize in personal study groups, Christian treatment programs, recovery groups, church-related groups, etc... because it reveals the real history of Alcoholics Anonymous. It also is an important reference title to study each bible verse associated with early A.A.'s very high success rate, and the book describes how the early A.A. members utilized this material in their recovery.

The James Club and the Original A.A. Program's Absolute Essentials, 4th ed. is a must-have for Christians in recovery. If you are interested in the true biblical roots of A.A., then you will find that this book will answer all of your questions. I personally think that every single treatment center and recovery group today should have a copy of this title. This title alone has jump-started a new movement in American called, The James Club. People in recovery groups today are utilizing this title in their groups to learn and discuss the biblical origins of A.A. and how they can utilize those principles in their own recovery. I cannot say enough about this book. You will have to buy a copy for yourself to see how great it truly is. It has my recommendation for the recovery book of the year award (if there is such an award)!!! Thank you and God Bless.

Susan Lightwater is a person who is definitely in tune with the spiritual power that is sweeping the world. The messages that her guides are sending to her are those same messages that are touching the consciousness of every spiritual seeker and meditator on the planet. The message is that we are One and that Love is at the core of all Life. Susan presents these messages with clarity and definition. She is truly in touch with Divine Spirit. Susan has achieved an enlightenment that most are not consciously aware of. Rodney Groves, author, Journey to Enlightenment, Jacaranda Press, Oct 1998.

I read this book about 10 years ago with my previous book club. I had a hard time following it. This time around, I enjoyed it. It is hard to follow, but if you split the names up. And think what they did, it may help.
The story is about mother's and daughter's relationships. Mostly, the asian mother's being able to relate to their daughter's which they did not seem to do well. The mother's did not understand them and the daughter's did not understand their mother. I would recommend this for anyone who has a book club.

This is the story of four Chinese families that centers on the Mothers and Daughters in each unit. It reminds you that you come from somewhere and the influences of culture and family and situations makes each of us who we are. It also speaks volumes to the fact that Mothers are human beings, and definitely worth getting to know better.

The writing is wonderful! Amy Tan is very witty and engaging. She creates very vivid pictures with her words. This is an amazingly real tale that I highly recommend. No wonder it spent 9 months on the NY Times Bestseller List! The only drawback is that I would have preferred to read in trade paperback format.

This is one of my favorite books....ever
