Speaking as a child abuse defense attorney, life would be much easier if social workers would learn the mistakes they can make resulting in false disclosures of child abuse. My job would be much easier if the results of these interviews were more reliable. This book shows how and why social workers need to use proper interview techniques. It's a great book from a defense attorney's standpoint to cross-examine a social worker with, but if every state mandated this book as training for social workers in the first place, we would have fewer cases in the system, and more reliable evidence.

I wish I had read this book the first day it came out. Very good protocols. Very effective strategies. Speaking as a law enforcement investigator assigned to these cases almost exclusively, there is not a better book I've found yet.

As a teacher, I needed this for a classroom resource. It was unavailable for purchase from the printer, but I was able to get it on Amazon for a terrific price.

I serve the National Association of Investors, Corp. (NAIC) as senior contributing editor and director, online resources. I clearly have some bias, but feel that this text is a wonderful tool for launching teenagers on a lifetime of successful strategic long-term investing. We reviewed this text in the April-2000 issue of "Better Investing." In a nutshell, there's exceptional promise in helping our young people get started. Combine a little discipline with youthful imagination and the sky's the limit. The book delivers on its promise and merits consideration by any visionary educator and/or parent looking for effective support.

A very informative biography of Melvil Dewey. Full of fascinating facts and interestingly written, I highly recommend this title, especially to those in the library world.

The author, Wayne Wiegand, has written the definitive book on Melvil Dewey. He tells us how Dewey accomplished so much in his lifetime. We also learn of some of the less than admirable qualities of Dewey. I found the following parts fascinating: the rise and fall of the Lake Placid Club; his difficult time at Columbia College; riding his bicycle to work on a regular basis; his ownership of Library Bureau; and the development of the Dewey Decimal System. I really felt that I knew Melvil Dewey after reading this book. The author relates the successes and the frustrations of Dewey. No one has had a greater impact on librarianship in the English speaking world than Melvil Dewey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn about Dewey. The author is to be commended for a truly outstanding biography!

Illustrated with a scattering black-and-white photography revealing the natural beauty of the land and the hardy spirit of the people who live there, Island Folk: The People of Isle Royale lives up to its title with its chronicle of memories that tell how the island transformed from a simple fishing village to a popular destination for tourists who come by boat or seaplane. Especially recommended reading for anyone preparing to see Isle Royale for themselves - or for armchair travelers ready to savor the next best thing to visiting Isle Royale's residents in person.

The author, Peter Oikarinen, is a lifelong resident of the Copper Country and is intimately associated with Isle Royale and its people, past & present.

It's a fabulous look at Island Life before the takeover by the National Park system, centering on its commercial fishing history & families.

This book has been long out-of-print, however, it is now available again via the University of Minnesota Press in a better format that contains additional material.

I just returned from Isle Royale as Pete's assistant, he having been hired there as a contractor; as such, I was able to see the Island like very few people can, priviliged to tag along with the finest mentor around, Pete Oikarinen.

From the time we shipped off from Houghton, MI aboard the Ranger III (with everyone ashore yelling at Pete "Did ya bring your keppu?") to the time we returned to Copper Harbor on the Isle Royale Queen (courtesy Capt. Don Kilpela), I was amazed not only by the size of the Island but the friendliness/helpfulness of the National Park staff, the frequent moose sightings, the opportunity to fish for lakers in such fantastic, unspoiled settings and yes, the ability to lay eyes on some of scenes as described in this book, Island Folk.

Do like I did and read this fine tome, then sail the Big Lake to Isle Royale ... satisfaction guaranteed.

What an extensive encyclopedia of information from A-Z! Complete information in easy to use format with information from propagation, pests and diseases, maintenance, garden cultivation, harvesting, companion planting, container growing, medicinal uses, other uses, and culinary applications & more! I made the Chive Butter and it's hmmmm, hmmmm, good on sweet corn on the cob! Next I plan to try the Sweet Marigold Muffins. It also has info on planning a herb garden with 10 sample plans, beautiful photographys throughout, how to preserve herbs by drying and freezing, and making and using natural dyes! It's a 5 star addition to my extensive herb library.

This book has it all -- great pictures, great ideas, even great recipes. A good resource for those who want to build their own herb garden.

Mark Anderson's account of his life growing up in the 60s and 70s and his relationship to pop music, Christian music, God and teen sin is immensely fun and entertaining. I hope he writes another book soon!

I purchased "Jesus Sound Exposion" yesterday and became quickly captivated by Anderson's engrossing memoir of navigating his adolescence and young adulthood between the twin poles of Evangelical Christianity and Rock n Roll.

Anderson transports his readers to a parallel universe riddled with dualisms: Heaven or Hell, Jesus or Satan, chastity or making out, etc. The book presents an honest look at the conservative end of the Christian spectrum and the narrow-minded worldview that accompanies it. Picture a typical 17-year-old boy compelled to share "The Four Spiritual Laws" with his high school classmates, motivated by visions of hellfire awaiting the unrepetant.

But Anderson leavens the tale with humour and musical discoveries while dispensing grace to his parents, siblings, and Sunday School teachers. While no longer a believer per se, Anderson reveals a significant amount of personal growth and maturity, eschewing fundamentalism and black/white thinking for a catholic (little c) worldview that encompasses divorce, teaching, retail work, and the horns blaring out on Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run."

The book on the Salons was part of the Jewish Museum (NYC) show last spring. I saw the show and the book is now a tool I use for research. The women and their salons include some of the most influental and creative forces through the centuries. The book is also worth having as table top book, for your salon/living room as a way to stimulate converstions when your friends gather. Biliski is to be commended for her work on a topic Jewish Women have been waiting for.

For the earlier part of this analysis, I would like to retitle the book 'Salons'.
I know of no book that devotes its contents to the past two hundred years' cultural entity of the 'salon'. [For that matter I don't know of any book that devotes itself solely to the cultural entity of its 'equivalent' -- the 'musical(e)'.]
By provisionally eliminating the 'Jewish' or 'female' associations in the book, the study of the 'salon' as a cultural entity is unique itself.
Then coupled with the 'female' as the main creator and motivator of the salon is surely mind-expanding.
Then, in addition, (to those interested) to add the Jewish aspect (which, again, if one is interested) with its many associations (Jew and still German or Austro-Hungarian; the 'Court Jew'; voluntary conversion (or 'slipping away, or intermarriage) of some Jews, and its association with anti-Semitism, or just the desire to be 'less Jewish', the prominent place of many Jews in European history, etc., etc.) is surely a plus.
Now, to the physical aspect of the book: Its binding, quality of the paper, and quality of the (many colored) reproductions, are first quality.
Its content is unequaled with its seven introductory articles by the editors, the four monographs by other authorities; then the most interesting biographies of the female 'salon-keepers' [!!!]; and finally the fine notes, biblography and index.

To recapitulate: Physically this is a fine production; the subject (the salon) is a real contribution; plus the important function of the female (I can't think of any male 'salonniere'), and, to those interested, the importance of the Jew in the cultural history of particularly Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this a unique and entirely 'satisfying' production.

Jew or non Jew, if you are at all interested in this contribution to the culture of the 'western' world, the purchase of this book is a MUST.

What a WONDERFUL book!!! This book is for any individual who has ever been interested in what the "journey" on the path of spirituality is all about.

It is ideal for a novice who simply wants to become more familiar with esoteric principles and it is perfect for any practioner who wants to find a new way of looking at things.

I would HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who wants to become more familiar with spirituality.

A Sufi Master herself, Dr. Angha has been practicing Sufism all her life. The Journey is an introduction to the subject of spiritual travelling which is the Sufi's experience of the Divine. This work explores many dimensions of spiritual travelling, from explaining the differences between mere philosophy and actual mystical experience, to discussing stages of the heart and the different illuminations that attend each stage, to revealing the meanings hidden in the symbolism of Sufi poetry so popular today, though frequently little understood. A fabulously written and immensely interesting book.
