Wonderful, simple exposition of a sometimes complicated sportReview Date: 2000-07-11
This book started with the basics of football (the field, how it is played,it's history, the equipment, et cetera). After that, a wonderful review of both the defense and offense and all the actions they could take It then moved on to the positions and all the actions they could take ( This was of the most interest to me because this has always been the part I've had the most difficulty with). This, along with the section on plays, were essential to my growing knowledge of football. The last chapters on the essential players and coaches of football proved to be a great appendix to reference back too.
All in all, a great guide to football for someone who has no knowledge of the sport.

Useful and inspiringReview Date: 2003-02-07
Although the book was written for teachers it's equally useful for parents of middle grade
students who want to recommend good books for their children or find a great book for a family read aloud.
The book is divided into two parts-The Inner World, books to help students think about themselves and their own lives
and The Outer World, books to help students develop understanding of and compassion for others. Each chapter focuses on a
theme such as peer pressure or growing up in another culture and contains reviews of books coupled with student comments on
the books and ideas for teaching.
The book inspires the reader to think about how to engage young adolescents with literature that is meaningful to them and that stimulates them to think about their lives and the world.
I'm the author of this book
so you may want to take my review with a grain of salt!

Best metaphysics book of the year!Review Date: 2003-07-16
What is the book about? Mainly the question of whether physical objects have temporal parts. A temporal part of x is, roughly, an object that exists for a shorter time than x but that exactly overlaps x throughout its existence. Sider believes, for example, that you have a temporal part that exists (only) from noon to 1pm today, and that perfectly overlaps you throughout that time. His view allows him to give neat and clean solutions to all manner of metaphysical problems (including the problem of how a time traveler who meets his former self could be both sitting and standing at the same time), and to do various other wonderful things.
Although this is primarily a work for academic philosophers, it is clear enough that non-philosophers will be able to follow it, and to benefit from a careful reading of it. I highly recommend Four-Dimensionalism to professional philosophers, philosophy students (both graduate and undergraduate), and anyone else who is interested in questions about time and space.

Practical Snow Analysis Examples and infoReview Date: 2004-01-28
Info is straight forward, has practice examples to test your knowledge on when to ride and when to walk away from certain conditions, lots of pics to help explain terrain features and in depth "how to's" on testing snow strength, as well as detailed instructions on correct probing technique.
Added bonus: Craig Kelly helped contribute to the info in this book, and hence there are many pictures of him throughout. Much love to our fallen hero.
Worth $8.00? Oh heck yeah. Small price to pay to save the life of your friends and your own.

Retrospective 2000-A New Look at the DownwaveReview Date: 2000-04-19
(1) Collapse of the interest rates from 18% to 6% (2) The Collapse of Gold and Silver prices from a high of $850 to $280 per ounce. (3) Rise of Conservative Republican politics for the 1980's to 1993. (4) The coming creative destruction of the old technology in favor of the NEW TECH ECONOMY. (5) THE COLLAPSE OF THE STOCK MARKET AND RISE OF BLUE CHIP STOCK MARKET ECONOMY. (6) The rise of the new underclass known\ as homeless and other blue collar groups. (7) The bottome of crisis in 1999-2000 formally ending the deflation cup.
The updates to his theoretical analysis can be seen in Myron H. Ross, A Gale of Creative Destruction which gives a brilliant analysis of the 5th Upwave of wealth and prosperity and Harry Denton's The Roar 2000 builds a baby boomer portfolio on the theoretical foundations of these two early works. Beckman has to be credited with giving the general public and scholarly community a wake up call on the impact of economic cycles on the daily lives of American citizens. He even gave all the readers the greatest investment advice of the 1980's buy Treasury Bonds at 18% for the 20 year period. Bravo, to Mr. Beckman for being right!

A difficult process made easier by this bookReview Date: 2008-07-08
My spouse and I did not know whether we wanted to mediate or collaborate; after reading one chapter we went the collaboration route. (The info on litigated/contested divorce kept us on the path to collaboration!)
Ms. Stark writes clearly & concisely. The chapters are well organized to follow the chronology of a divorce. Frequent icons in the margins call attention to certain aspects of your decision making and give advice on the steps involved. The layout is clean and highly readable.
Many references in the back of the book help one find support, services, and materials to get you through. I purchased three other divorce books at the same time, but found myself relying on this one alone.
Consider this a necessity. Consider this helpful even if you don't live in Connecticut!
Amazingly helpful!Review Date: 1998-08-22
Besides outlining the value of the mediation process in reaching closure and saving money, Stark provides a step-by-step how-to guide. Just as important, she offers an overview of the psychological stages of divorce that offers reassurance and preparation.
As a person using this book myself, I can recommend it to other Nutmeggers who find themselves needing to end a marriage. Doing so is always painful; Stark offers a guiding hand to help manage this passage.

Life in the early NBAReview Date: 2006-02-14
If teams such as the Syracuse Nationals, Rochester Royals, and Fort Wayne Pistons mean anything to you, or names such as Dolph Schayes, Bob Pettit, Bill Sharman, and Bob Cousy ring a bell - or merely wonder why they do for many people - you will enjoy this book. It's a look at what professional basketball was like in the '40s and '50s, when the NBA was first coming to light (a mix of teams from various regional leagues) and developing. Charles Salzberg conducted 15 interviews with players from that era, asking them to relate their experiences - how they got started, what they thought of their teammates and opposing players, highlights of their careers, how they think the game has changed, what they think of basketball today (1980s) - and the results are interesting and informative.
The game was played differently back then, before the 24-second clock went into effect: it was a much more deliberate game, slower in execution, lots of passing, the set shot the main weapon. Just about all the interviewees note how the 24-second clock changed the game, made it more exciting (especially near the end of the game), some thinking it actually saved the NBA from extinction. Bill Russell is someone mentioned by many of them as having a profound influence on the game, too, and the reason for the Boston Celtic dynasty in the 50s-60s. Most of those interviewed believe that players today have more talent, especially when it comes to shooting the ball, but regret the loss of team play the way it was for them. There aren't a whole lot of surprises here (most of the interviews talk in generalities rather than specifics) and no skeletons in the closet are revealed, but for anyone getting a little long in the tooth it's a nostalgic look back at the game before multi-million dollar contracts and schoolyard antics became the mainstay. And for younger fans it's a reminder that there was basketball before Michael Jordan.

In any case, the book is divided by meal courses, beginning with appetizers and running through soups, salads, main courses, vegetables, breads and desserts, none of them run of the mill. In the salad section, for example, one finds Mrs. Poole's Fresh Cauliflower Salad, contributed by Susan Katzman in St. Louis, Mo., in tribute to a friend named Pebble Poole. The ingredients include cauliflower, of course, but also Parmesan cheese, lemon, romaine lettuce, and garlic. It's delicious.
Then there is sweet and sour pineapple chicken, no-noodle spaghetti ( made with spaghetti squash onion, tomatoes and olive oil), a delightful chicken casserole and spinach lasagna.
There is a wide variety of food types here, all of them delicious, economic and healthy. Try it.
