"Nurse anesthetists annually administer approximately half the anesthetics in the United States, yet they remain---in the words of a national news publication---"the best kept secret in medicine." Watchful Care tells the story behind that "secret," and, in the process, CHALLENGES PHYSICIAN-ORIENTED HISTORIES OF THE FIELD....."

One of the most effective ways to devalue a profession, or any group for that matter, is to ignore their history. Anesthesia texts written for primarily a physician audience have for decades systematically avoided mention of the considerable contributions made to the specialty of anesthesia by Nurse Anesthetists. This book tackles, and successfully masters the task of tracing the development of anesthesia as a nursing specialty from the 19th century to the 1980's. The author also chronicles the multiple, albeit unsuccessful, attempts of organized medicine to stifle the development CRNA's, the profession that has been providing the majority of anesthesia care to Americans for over a century. The book is a "must read" for anyone, nurse, physician or patient, who has an interest in the subject of anesthesia. It is worth the search to find the "out of print" work. Hopefullly, it will be reprinted!

Whether you're a seasoned librarian, a student, or just a lover of libraries, this book is for you. It is written by many, many different authors who had the best and most practical advice and stories in small, digestable articles. This is a book I will keep and use for the rest of my career.

This one's a keeper!

The title, "The Whole Library Handbook," is suitable, for this book covers it all in short, easy-to-read sections. It provides a brief overview of the practical aspects of librarianship: an example of a MARC record, job-hunting tips, issues in librarianship, available scholarships/grants, basic preservation tips, underserved populations, etc. It is actually an enjoyable read. If you're assigned this text for an MLS class, consider yourself lucky.

This book contains a wealth of information on libraries and librarianship! It is an amazing resource for the librarian, containing information on everything from staff development to useful addresses to discussions on library issues. It is especially helpful to the student in a Library Science program; it is answering questions I didn't even know I had! A helpful (and fun) read.

This book opens to view the commitment of a wonderful mother who stood as an island in the midst of a sea of turmoil for her faith. It is an inspiring example of how others respected her for her integrity, even though they followed a different life stlye and belief. We need more roll models like this in our current floundering moral abyss and absense of prominent moral leaders.

Set prior to and during World War II in what is now Serbia, this book is the dramatic story of a woman who made faithfulness to God her highest priority. Ann Vitorovich, tells a story rich in detail and drama. Whom Shall I Fear? is a quick read; not because it is written at an elementary level, but because it is a hard book to put down. The excellent writing carries the reader along chapter after chapter.

Exceptional . . . a must read given the challenging times we are living in today!

"The book is awesomely inspiring!! A powerful testimony rarely
received out of the pulpit. Outstanding "Bible study" that connects
with lay people. It embraced everything desirable in a book -- drama,
humor, counseling, and courage. The twins' childish antics added a
human perspective to the book and people. Mara was one impressive,
strong and courageous woman. The story of how the homes were saved from German tanks was breathtaking. This book reminds readers it is important to avoid complacency with regard to world events."

I've read and re-read this book, as it's always a refreshing look at the worth and dignity of a boy, and recharges me for another day of working with troubled youth.

The philosophy should be read by anyone caring for youth. The program described by Loughmiller is intensely practical, and very insightful. The concepts he pioneered are used all over the United States, and internationally.

It's an account of the concepts, mission and story of the first long term residential wilderness camp, Camp Woodland Springs in Dallas, Texas. Kids in Trouble, his second book, is also a great read.

Wilderness Road by Campbell Loughmiller is the story of a camp probably unlike any you have known.

In the woods of East Texas groups of ten boys and their counselors live close to the land...building their own shelters, providing their own food and recreation, and sharing the experiences of creative group living.

For almost two decades Camp Woodland Springs, sponsored by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, has operated on a continuous year-round basis in the treatment of emotionaly handicapped boys. In an atmosphere of novelty, intensity and adventure, hundreds of youngsters have been given the opportunity to develop a sense of relationship and individual worth.

Shaping and directing the program, Campbell Loughmiller has skillfully combined education and therapy. Always striving to offer on-the-spot help in concrete situations, he states, "We don't spaend a lot of time helping a boy see what made him behave as he did in a particular situation. Our emphasis is upon helping him see how he can improve next time."

Wilderness Road is an indispensable work on the philosophy and spirit of Therapeutic Camping. Loughmiller's approach is not a program, but an adventure of discovery. This book captures the author's enthusiasm and innovative spirit and is essential reading for anyone interested in helping troubled youth grow. This seminal work covers Loughmiller's philosophy of camp, education, groupwork, therapy, counselor selection and training, and briefly details how to set up and work with a board and sponsors.

Not much can be said about this book: you get exactly what you have in mind. First part of the book lists every problem from 1985-2000 Putnam exams, the second part provides hints to each of the problems in case you are stuck. The last part contains detailed solution(s) to every problem. It is an excellent book... Good luck on the test if you will be taking it.

Good reference for the budding problem solver.

I did Putnam in 2002 and solved 6 full problems. The future Putnam competitor should make it a point to consult past Putnam problems to successfully make the switch from olympiad problems to the Putnam. Not that it is a big change, but to do well in Putnam you have to know at least some basic trick in calculus, analysis and such. This is a good starting point in making that transition.

On a whole another level, even research mathematicians (problem solver type) can benefit from the 'tricks' and nuances of the 'toy' problems (e.g Putnam problems) in honing their problem solving instinct.

A superb collection of women's experiences of battering!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-07
This extraordinary collection of fine women's stories collected and introduced by Susan Koppelman informs and reminds us of the widespread battering of women for over a century. And in the introductory notes prior to each story, Dr. Koppelman gives the reader extra information about the author and often about the times and conditions surrounding the depiction of abuse the woman, or women, suffer in each story. Still, every story left me feeling uplifted and proud to be a woman. What I found in these stories, over and over, is how little present day assumptions of entitlement held by abusive and battering men has changed! Batterers, then and now, assume they have the right to mistreat a woman or women as they do because they assume they are inherently superior and that they are preordained to do whatever they deem necessary to control and dominate women. These stories, however, tell us far more then the usual clinical 'case histories' of women victimized by men. These stories tell of courage, ingenuity and an almost super-human strength of spirit although some stories do tell of the eventual death of the battered women. As a woman, myself, who has found her own freedom from overbearing, abusive and cruel men...I am grateful to Dr. Koppelman for giving me and other women the collection of gems she has brought together in "Women in the Trees"! Other collections gathered together in other books edited by Susan Koppelman and introduced by her are equally remarkable and nurture the feminine spirit! I highly recommend "Women in the Trees" as well as her other books.

I found this book some years back while I was wandering through a bookstore and I was immediately drawn to it. As a Women's Studies major, I have always been interested in fictional representations of domestic violence and this book was just what I had always been looking for. It is actually one of the resources I have drawn on for my senior thesis and I cannot recommend it enough. My copy is a little worse for wear because I enjoy sharing it with every woman and man I know. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in how the representations of violence against women have and have not changed in our mother's and grandmother's lifetimes.

A rare collection of abuse and strength

Susan Koppelman has created a marvelous and inspiring collection of women's stories about abuse and resistance.

Before each story. she includes a quote to elucidate the following piece. My favorite: "Some abusive people are adept at picking out a trait that a woman is most pleased about and using it against her...When an abused woman begins to doubt that she has that one special trait she has always felt secure about, the rest of her self-concept is quickly called into question." This quote, as well as many others, provide answers to the smug and uneducated who question how this could happen, and who might be the victims of cruelty and violence, both physical and emotional.

Koppelman has, through this varied collection, clearly shown us that there's no common profile of an abused woman. We could all be.

This book is a must read for everyone!

This book is a companion volume to the same authors' "Wisdom and Compassion", which came out a few years ago. Both are sponsored by the Tibet House in New York and both have the same layout, typography, and approach. As far as I can see there are no duplications between them, though both books are quite large. People who loved that book, as I did, will definitely want this one too, since it is basically more of the wonderful same.

This volume focusses on one vast private collection of Tibetan painting. There are two hundred featured paintings, all shown in full-page reproductions, many with full-page details as well, showing the detail of the tiny figures in the backgrounds which are half of the fun of these pictures. There is some repetition from the first book in the text, but this book goes into more detail about who the figures are and what they are doing.

If there is a prize for quality of reproductions in an art book this book should win it. Every shot is beautiful -- nothing too dark, everything evenly lit. It is impossible, of course, to reproduce the soft powdery glow of the Tibetan pigments on silk, so the pictures look different here than they did in the museum. The printing process necessarily gives them a gloss that the originals don't have. That said, the book is still a beautiful object in its own right. Exactly THAT rosy pink next to exactly THAT acid orange next to exactly THAT slate blue are what make these paintings engrossing from the first minute, even before you get down to work and figure out what's going on in them.

If you want a gift for the budding Buddhist in your family, or if you want to start with only one giant volume on Tibetan art, I would advise you to start with the first book, "Wisdom and Compassion", for the simple reason that it includes sculpture as well as painting, and those little gold demons and tiny brass Buddhas are not to be missed. Real fans, though, and anyone serious about learning all they can about Tibetan art, will want both. Also people like me -- that is: gluttons for color.

The number of pages given above is wrong -- there are 512 pages. And please note that this price is NOT expensive for such a book. (Are all those movie stars who have their picture taken with the Dalai Lama bankrolling this book somehow? If so, we should forgive them all those horrible movies.) It is wise to preserve all the beauty in this book; it is compassionate to sell it so inexpensively.

Superb introduction to a troubling concept

Robin Robertson has a real knack for explaining the complexities of Jungian psychology in a straightforward, even comfortably casual way, without ever dumbing it down. And in this slim but informative volume on the Shadow, he's in top form. Using vivid analogies, as well as experiences from his own life, he takes us into the depths of the Psyche & introduces us to the Shadow, the part of ourselves we tend to fear, deny, and project onto others rather than face outright. Not only that, but he makes clear that the Shadow isn't simply our "evil" side, but everything about ourselves that we've refused to acknowledge & accept -- including many positive things that can lead to personal growth, if we only have to courage to go through the darkest places to claim them.

The unfortunate cover might put some potential readers off, looking something less than slick & professional -- but isn't that what the prospect of facing the Shadow does anyway? We tend to judge by outer appearances too quickly sometimes, especially when we project our own fears outward. Just look a little more deeply within, and you'll discover that there's treasure to be found. Highly recommended!

Great introduction / layman's guide to the Shadow!

Concise, easy-to-read, and practical introduction / layman's guide to the Jungian concept of the Shadow self.

Robertson avoids the stuffy, technical writing so often found when reading about Jung's ideas, and instead presents the material in a very down-to-earth manner, - aimed squarely at the average reader.

And unlike other materials I've read on this topic, Robertson's purpose is to give the reader some practical ways that they can begin to acknowledge and re-integrate their Shadow.

Quick, worthwhile read!

As a healthcare professional who lectures on foot health, I found this book to be concise and to the point. The potential effects from lack of proper foot care are not soft peddled. The steps to take for preventive foot care are written and organized in an easy-to-digest manner.

With managed care taking it's toll on the time allotted for doctor visits, our patients need to become better informed. "101 Foot Care Tips" will help diabetics and their families know when to seek urgent treatment for what may seem to be a minor foot problem, hopefully, before infection and possible amputation become a real threat.

As The Foot Nurse, I whole-heartedly recommend this book!

101 Foot Care Tips For People With Diabetes is an excellent self care guide and reference for diabetics and their caretakers. Questions about exercise, the relevance of blood sugar control, nail clipping, choosing appropriate footwear, what to do about ingrown toenails, and preferred forms of exercise with diabetic foot complications are answered. All questions are succinctly explained with authority. Types 1 and 2 boxes at the top of the page tell if the question refers to both or either types of diabetes. Amusing illustrations lighten the tone and pique interest. Chapter 11 lists additional resources valuable to the diabetic. 101 Foot Care Tips For People With Diabetes is a good manual for any diabetic. Its brisk, no-nonsense explanations of complex interrelationships of diet, exercise, skin care and health management are presented in unavoidably clear lay terms.

This is an excellent book and a "must read" for everyone who has diabetes or who plans meals/shops/cooks for people with diabetes. I am a registered dietitian who works in an endocrine clinic and I also have a private nutrition practice. I recommend this book to all of my patients/clients with diabetes. So many people with diabetes think in terms of can't eat this or can't eat that. It's time to think about what you can eat as well as debunk the myth once and for all that people with diabetes can't eat any sugar. This book was updated in 2007 and contains everything you need to know to eat well to manage diabetes. Also covered in the book are the lastest summary recommendations of the American Diabetes Association's 2006 updated medical nutrition therapy guidelines.
