The Finest of Art

For some people this book is a substitute for visiting Yosemite. I suppose that is legitimate. For Neill this book is clearly act of devotion to something he loves, even adores. For me the portfolios are pure art. In them Neill shows me ways of looking at things I never imagined. The contrast of snowy shore and black water. El Capitan veiled in mist and inky trees. Half Dome grey and majestic foregrounded by a glowing tree. Neill is especially good with the color black. I love the way he sometimes offers up a deep green that shades into black.

Not every photo is a masterpiece, but a high percentage of them are. They are stylized without being candy-coated, like the works of so many other landscape photographers. They condition consciousness so that after looking at them I see even my humdrum little suburb in a new way. This effect is surely due in part to the majesty of the subject, but it is mostly the achievement of William Neill. I revere this book and recommend it to any lover of beauty. Go to Mr. Neill's website and see the pictures for yourself.

Yosemite, magical and mysterious

A long time fan of William Neill's amazing photography, this book is a work of love. It is obvious in the beautiful images that his passion for Yosemite is revealed, page by page. Yosemite is one of the most visited and most photographed national parks in the US. Made famous by the images by Ansel Adams, among others, Half Dome and El Capitan have been photographed by millions every year for decades. Just when you think that every possible image and perspective has been taken, Mr. Neill's book opens your eyes up to more unique and varied possibilities.

To truly reveal the magic that is Yosemite, you must explore it during all the seasons, time and time and time again over the years. Mr. Neill clearly did as this book explores the beauty and uniqueness that is Yosemite through all those seasons, all the weather. With each page memories and enchantment flood the soul as I remember standing in the same spot, but seeing it anew through the magic of his camera, surrounded by the magic of the place. Even if you've never visited Yosemite, you will come away a friend with this book.

I highly recommend it to everyone who visits or considers visiting Yosemite. If you are thinking about a book that represents some of the magic that is nature and the wild in the United States to give to a friend from a foriegn land or someone city-bound, this book will feel like a hike through the woods and some magical place.

William Neill has done it again! Be sure and check out the rest of his wonderful books. I highly recommend "By Nature's Design" and "The Color of Nature" books. His images are timeless.

While Yosemite's splendor is introduced to the reader in the photographs, it is impossible to really capture the beauty of this great park with just a picture. The beauty of this book is a combined effort of excellence in photography and prose which sings the praises of this absolutely amazing corner of the world.

I highly recommend this book for those heading to Yosemite, want help in remembering a trip, or, for those of you not fortunate enough to have the chance to get there (go-go-go!), you'll read it and book the next flight!

For the first time in history, a Sufi scholar explains the meaning behing prayers and remembrance. The author integrates the spiritual, physical, and psychological faces of the human being when examining the true, Divine meaning of prayer and remembrance. I have never come across such a straight-forward analysis of prayers. Interested in learning about the heart of Islam and Sufism ... buy this book.

My copy of this book is worn from reading and re-reading. It not only explains the words, postures and other requirements for the Muslim prayer, but it directs the student beyond the senses to the heart where the true prayer is performed. This book contains information that is to be found no place else, explained by the foremost holy Sufi master of our time.

Understanding Islam

In a traditional Islamic upbringing, we are shown how to repeat gestures and given very broad, surface explanations of our actions. Yet, we know from the rich tradition that there is more to all that we do. Finally, a book has been written to show Muslims and non-Muslims the true meaning behind the actions of prayers ... both spiritual and physical.

The book details the motions and sayings of prayer and includes commentary on their outward and inward meaning. The author is clearly an individual with immense spiritual knowledge, beyond that of ordinary people. This stengthens the insights in the book.

Now, I honestly understand what it means to be a Muslim and begin to understand the profound implications of simple acts of prayer. Truly has changed my perspective on how I go about everything in life.

This book is a gem

This book is one of the most amazing resources to read, review, and read again. It's depth is amazing and yet it simply and clearly shows the reader how to pray and the meaning behind prayer in Islam. There is information in this book that cannot be found in any other book on Islam or prayer. Highest recommendation.

We first checked this book out from our public library to test it and now we can't live without it!

The recipes are delicious and real-life friendly. We do not have diabetes in our household, but want to put healthy nutritious foods on the table.

In my view, any recipe that passes diabetic guidelines will keep the appetite satisfied and fuel our bodies appropriately. But most importantly to us, these recipies appeal to our senses in making mealtime a pleasure with foods we want to enjoy again and again.

I was diagnosed prediabetic with high numbers 8 weeks ago. After meeting with a nutritionist and trying to make sense of adjustments I needed to make with eating, I really felt confused...there is a lot to learn! Luckily this is the first cookbook I purchased and am so glad. I can whip up many of the dishes in just a couple minutes. The ingredients are not complicated and are easy to keep on hand. I made my Easter dinner for my whole family all from the book and no one but my husband knew it was "special" food! My husband likes how I have been cooking so no cooking two separate kinds of meals. I have bought other diabetic cookbooks but not found any other as good and simple. Most recipes in the other books have longer lists of ingredients and take much more time to prepare. I am a cooking kind of gal who ran my own bed and breakfast for ten years...I love pretty and great tasting food...this book gets gobs of stars from me!

A welcome and very highly recommended addition

In "The 4-Ingredient Diabetes Cookbook" cookbook author, food consultant, and nutritionist Nancy S. Hughes has compiled simple and delicious recipes for entrees, side dishes and desserts using four ingredients (or less) that are especially suitable and suited to the dietary needs of diabetics. Quick and easy to prepare, the recipes range from Pineapple-Apricot Fizz; Lemony Asparagus Spear Salad; Peach Barbecued Chicken; and Chili Stuffed Potatoes; to Taco-Spiced Rice; Skillet Roasted Veggies; Zesty Beef Patties with Grilled Onions; and Frozen Chocolate Peanut Butter Layered Pie. Of special note are the 'Cook's Tips' that accompany each of the recipes. "The 4-Ingredient Diabetes Cookbook" is a welcome and very highly recommended addition to diabetes relevant cookbook collections.

Smart Storytelling That Truly Entertains
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-23
All I Can Truly Deliver is a refreshingly brazen collection of fiction that combines intellectual grit with sumptuous storytelling. The first two-thirds of the book is divided into six "cover" stories - new versions of canonical tales. Matt Vadnais explains, in a postscript to the collection, that he has hijacked "the cover" and applied it to fiction to "explore, challenge, reinforce, and defy" the "theory that there are no new stories." For him, "the cover merges the experiences of creating and enjoying art in a way that few artistic or cultural artifacts do."

Whatever one makes of the theory behind the writing, there's no doubting the allure of reading and rereading these cover stories, experiencing the reverberations of classical tales and themes while enjoying finely drawn characters in compelling circumstances. Starting with a bold and overtly theatrical retelling of Franz Kafka's classic story, "The Great Wall of China," and ending with an audacious, witty, and just plain fun retelling of Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" (with a wink and a nod to Joyce Carol Oats as well), these short stories do deliver.

Building on the thematic arch from the first two-thirds of the book, the remainder of the book is a novella that follows three characters - a wealthy Marxist from Kansas, a once-famous child star, and a former bassist in a big-time rock band. A virtuoso with dialogue and unconventional twists and breaks, Vadnais weaves a tale about these unlikely colleagues, who are bound to one another through a simple vocation: buying the houses of famous dead people.

In the end, if there's one criticism I have of this book, it's that there isn't more of it. In an age when so many talented writers merely churn out stories with conveyor-belt characterization and cereal-box plot surprises because they fear that readers just won't get it, Vadnais has reclaimed the right to tell smart stories that truly entertain.

This has become my favorite of the dozens of cookbooks I own. My family and I have enjoyed very much every one of the recipes I've tried -- I haven't come across a single dud yet!

The recipes also include very complete nutrition information, which is helpful for those watching what they eat.

I can't recommend this highly enough!

When I'm looking to try a new dish, this cookbook is one of the top three books I pull out. One of the best things about it (besides the awesome recipes) is that it offers suggestions about what other dishes to serve with whatever you're making. It also has a lot of good recipes for vegtables and legumes, which aren't as easy to find in some traditional cookbooks. I also really love that a lot of recipes are more ethnic-not just American style. (And by ethnic I don't mean tacos and pasta)

They have a decent array of healthy desserts-many fruit related. What's best about the dessert advice is that they realize fat, to an extent, is essential in baking. Their recipes do some subsitions for fat, such as applesauce in place of oil, but they also recognize that people want to eat chocolate cake. Their recommendation is just to eat less of something that tastes great but is high in fat and calories.

Overall this cookbook (the AMA really)advocates a sensible eating style, offers basic advice on nutrition. You will find both the standard food pyramid and the Mediterranean pyramid but no fad diet advice.

You can't tell from the title of this book just how good it is. It features excellent nutritional advice, smart tips, and recipes that include old standards and new stuff for curious gourmets.

As someone trying to control her intake of cholesterol and fat as well as lose weight, this book is a fantastic springboard of ideas and suggestions. Newcomers will find explanations for more exotic names and ingredients, and old pros will learn tips on how to make their favorite dishes healthier. And those of us watching our weight will find caloric and nutritional breakdowns.

My only complaint would be that you have to do a little math to figure out how much a serving is. This isn't too hard to do, though.

Very recommended!!

A miraculous three-quarters of the recipes I've tried from this book have been keepers. The authors have somehow managed to avoid the pitfall of trying to make palatable meals out of skim milk and celery. Instead, they have chosen dishes that at their best do not rely on unhealthy ingredients. Butter, cheese, and the like do appear in some recipes, in moderate amounts, just enough to prevent feeling that there's something missing. Among the best of the book: Fennel and prosciutto risotto, Bulgur taboule, Butternut squash soup, Minted couscous salad, Fiery pork tenderloin, and a gingery won ton soup that will be in heavy rotation at our house for years to come.

Gives detailed pictures, and great Illustrtations of skelton, combs, faults and defects of Birds. Includes all Waterfowl, but not Wilds. No Guineas YET,,, but hopefully SOON*Be VERY careful,,as some of the sellers are selling the Yearbooks, NOT the actual Standard of Perfections, and they are NOT what you want, they simply list breeders names .NO color pictures, NO discriptions. They are Free to club members.

This reference is a great resource to support your Psych studies at University. I use it while studying to help me remember the things I am learning. The defs are sometimes clearer than the lecturer or the textbooks. Another reviewer sugggested highlighting words as you learn/reference them. I started doing this and it is fun to see the book fill with colors that show what I am learning. If you are not at school but want to learn Psych just out of general interest, I would suggest a Psych for dummies kind of book over this one. However, if you're a student this book is great.

After reading BASEBALL STRATEGIES and knowing it's available as a valuable reference, I'm looking forward to referring to it during the playoffs and World Series. BASEBALL STRATEGIES provides insight into the finer points of the game. It provides the rationale for the strategies used, and the decisions made regarding all of the individual match-ups in countless offensive situations that make baseball such a "complex simple game".

Besides baseball fans, the book is obviously written for coaches and players who want to develop their understanding of the game and improve their ability to react and anticipate in any given situation. Contributors to the book are successful college coaches who, as life-long students of the game, have brought their own experiences and perspectives to this well-written, informative book of offensive and defensive strategies and tactics. Pitching is also explained, from fielding the position to developing mental toughness to developing a plan for getting the batter out.

This book contains a wealth of information for "students of the game". If you play, coach, or just enjoy watching, BASEBALL STRATEGIES can provide valuable information for many seasons to come. There are so many pearls of wisdom, it should be guaranteed to improve the quality of play and understanding of everyone who reads it.

I highly recommend this book to any coaches that want to take their game to the next level. The one thing that this book does is break down every aspect of the game and gives you many, many ideas on how to implement the strategies explained.

I have been coaching baseball for 7 years at the high school level and have attended many baseball coaches clinics throughout the United States. I have learned many things at these clinics.

The beauty of this book is that it something that you can continue to reference back to again and again. This book has definitely aided to my players development. From defensive strategies to times to use the run game, this game covers it all.

I have also loaned this book out to other coaches and they have enjoyed it also.

If you are looking to take your coaching to the next level, I highly recommend this book.
