A Visit to the Mountains

"Perfect for Framing" was a like a trip home to the mountains. Maggie Bishop has created a dude ranch near Boone, North Carolina, and now I wish there really was one there!

The illustrations in the book add a surprisingly nice dimension to the story and an authentic look at the locale. [As a little insider tidbit: the cover photo is a house Maggie knows well -- she and her husband lovingly built it, piece by piece. That's what she does when she's not hiking the mountains or writing murder mysteries.] Maggie knows whereof she writes, and it shows.

Who wouldn't love a book that has folks who go to UFO meetings, vicious battles between property owners, romance, and even Elvis [who is, incidentally, a real person ... but you need to either live in Boone or read the book to know him]? Oh, and don't forget murder. It has all the good stuff!

Maggie Bishop does it again! An excellent read with unforgettable characters and great set-up. A perfect book for someone wanting to curl up and get comfortable. Her homespun voice brings the town of Boone, NC to life and I felt like I was part of the small town while reading Perfect for Framing. A must read!

Perfect for framing has a good plot, and is mixed up enough to sound believeable. Ms. Bishop uses some real characters in her book who make it realistic. Good story

Jemma Chase and Detective Tucker return for another suspense-filled escapade in Perfect for Framing, the latest addition to Maggie Bishop's acclaimed Appalachian Adventure series. With the advent of winter, Jemma turns from helping run Chase's Dude Ranch to utilizing her skills as photographer and wood worker. Jemma is hired by Petula Windsor, president of a local property owners' association, to build cabinets in her guest house, but before Jemma can collect her pay, Petula burns to death in the same house. Jemma, a CSI wannabe, would like nothing more than to be in on the investigation, and Tucker has a hard time trying to keep her interest at bay. But when Petula's husband is found dead and Tucker's life is jeopardized, Jemma won't be stopped until she finds the murderer.

Once more, Maggie Bishop delivers a thrilling whodunit, peppered with lovable characters and set against the beautiful backdrop of the mountains of North Carolina. Packed with breath-taking action and nail-biting suspense, with a twisting plot that guarantees constant speculation, this is one book that will have readers quickly turning pages, eager to find out what happens next. Highly recommended.

This book has fantastic lessons that include graphic organizers along with a hands-on approach to learning. Incorporating picture books with the lessons, it makes the lessons motivating while educating across the curriculum. The book is easy to use and the graphic organizers are "student friendly". This book is highly recommended.

Authors and classroom veterans Karen Ansberry and Emily Morgan know you're short on time...so they've integrated science and reading in a natural way to help you teach both subjects at once. They know that students who aren't strong readers may be turned off by science texts...so they show how to use high-quality fiction and non-fiction picture books to engage students in grades 3-6 in hands-on, standards-based science inquiries. This book contains 15 ready-to-teach science inquiry lessons, complete with reproducible student pages and assessments. It covers a broad range of topics, and draws on such diverse children's books as Dr. Xargle's Book of Earthlets, Sheep in a Jeep, and Weird Friends: Unlikley Allies in the Animal Kingdom.

This is a must have for every elementary school science teacher. I've used just a few of the lesson plans and I'm already the most popular teacher in school. Kids that hated science before now look forward to coming to my class for the next science lesson & lab. I'm convinced that this book will have a significant impact on our standardized test courses. Thank-you Karen & Emily for the outstanding effort you've put into this book. My students and I will be forever in your debt.

Mandatory

Review Date: 2008-05-16
This is a mandatory book in an urban planner or college bookshelf, for it has all the necessary information to complete urban projects. It is my handbook and that says all. It is also very well presented with a hardcover in good leather. The only shortcoming that I see is the absence of folded pages with urban plans in a larger scale, or renderings of zoning plans.

Excellent as a broadly scoped reference book

Review Date: 2008-05-31
This book is tremendously broad in its coverage of planning topics, though not in depth. Most topics get only 2 pages, though some get 4-5. References are listed for each topic to help you find more detailed information. The book is well organized and indexed. It's loaded with illustrations such as graphs, diagrams, flow charts, line art, photographs, and maps. Most are black and white, but there are 16 color plates that are grouped together and stuck in a seemingly arbitrary position in the middle of an unrelated topic.

Some information is already out of date. For example, on page 580 it says that the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) expired in 2003 and Congress was still debating reauthorization. The new act (SAFETEA-LU) was enacted in August 2005 and is not mentioned.

My only real complaint is that the type is quite small and can be difficult to read for 40+ year-old readers. On the other hand, I understand that if they used larger type this huge, heavy book would be even bigger and heavier.

I also got the electronic, online version of the book and was disappointed in that, again because of the small type. Even using a 20" monitor I had a very hard time reading it. The viewer application that Amazon uses has very limited capability to zoom in on the text so it does not help.

I was introduced to this book by a talk that one of the authors (Arthur Benjamin) gave at the MAA Mathfest in Albuquerque in August of 2005. The talk was one of the very best mathematics talks that I've ever attended. Everyone in the audience could follow what was going on, and we all left with an understanding of the basic approach to combinatorial identities used in this book. The authors' approach is to prove combinatorial identities by defining a quantity and then obtaining different formulas for that quantity. One formula becomes the left hand side of an identity while another formula becomes the right hand side.

When I read the book I found that it was just as clearly written, with lots of beautiful examples.

I haven't read this book yet, but I have a signed copy after seeing Jenny Quinn speak at the 2005 meeting of the Northwest chapter of the Mathmatics Association of America. If her written work is anything like her speaking, then this should be a great book. Her combinatorial proofs are an interesting approach to old equations, and she presents them in a very clear manner. A most enthusiastic lady.

This book is an excellent read, not only for the football history, but also for the context of the times. This paints a clear picture of what it was like in Stalinist Hungary after the war, and how even a man in a position of privilege could decide to leave. You don't need to be a football fan to appreciate this book, as it is an easy read, broken up into sections where other key figures are interviewed and offer their take on the same topics. Highly recommended.

This book depicts not only the life story of Ferenc Puskas who without any doubt should always be the member of the World Select, but the intrigues of the Communist system. I happen to personally know some of the participants named in the book, as I have lived In Hungary during the years of the Golden Squad! To have a team such as the Hungarian Select of the '50s may happen only once in a 100 years. The book, brings to life not only the achievements of the players but the intrigues of the totalitarian system that used such talents as Puskas & Co. to prove the superiority of the "Socialist Man".You don't need to be a "soccer" footbal fan to appreciate its true to life account of an era and its players gone by. The play-by-play reporting is outstanding. There was only one Puskas and this book immortalized him forever. It sure brought back the memories of the '52 Olympics, the "6:3" match in London and the thrill and the horrible end of the'54 World Cup... This book is a microcosm of man against the system and the system against the MAN...

Excellent book focused on the Longitude act's of the 1700's. The primary emphasis is on the two technologies Lunar-distance and chonometer for determining longitude with a precision under 1 degree. The relative percentages are: 50% chonometer, 30% lunar distance, 10% Jupiter's moons, 10% general history pre-1600's. I gave it four stars instead of 5 because I thought the book was going to be a balanced discussion ( i.e. equal time)encompassing all methods of determining longitude irrespective of a 1 degree precision. All that said, I would still recommend the book to anyone interested in the topic.

This beautifully presented large hardback is actually a series of essays covering the story of the search for Longitude from the 16th century to the 19th. The essays deal with a range of subjects from the mathematical to the absurd, from astronomy to cartography and has 4 excellent appendices. The book is well laid out with both black&white and color photography in a manner that means you don't need to be a student of the sea of chronology to understand it. A good book to have on the shelf.

This review is top notch and comprehensive. It's the book of choice to cover the background and the technology. I'm not a watch or clock fanatic, but I slam dunked this whole book in just a couple days; a 15 hour Qantas flight kept me captive. I wish there was more discussion on the nature of astronomy and how the clocks were calibrated. I want to read up on octants, sextants and basic navigation now. This book deserves five stars. The A&E four hour documentary, "Longitude", this month also deserves high marks. If someone knows of a good read on navigating with astronomy that's more layman oriented, please email me (thanks).

Previous reviewers say "lavish"; I say gorgeous.

This book considers the problem of longitude from a number of viewpoints. While Dava Sobel's book concentrated on the Harrison/Maskelyne controversy, this volume uses historical, mathematical and geographic viewpoints. What is impressive is the genius, dedication and tenacity of the Renaissance scientists. They may not have had GPS but they knew what they were doing.

This was written in 1980. Its only shortcoming is, it needs to be twice as big - no, make that 5 times as big. More pictures of every location, longer description. Tell every writer you know: This would be a sure-fire success, simply building on this fine foundation. Note that there are 200 used copies available: people recognize the value of this, and know others will want it too. It's one of those books I believe I need two copies of, just in case something happens to one of them. I've read and re-read it more than any other book I can think of. How is it that no other writer or publisher has figured out that it is fascinating to know about these little-known natural features?

It's simple. This is a book you really ought to get.

This book is out of print, and that's too bad. It lists over 200 places around the world, most of them natural features, that are truly amazing. Some are large, (Antarctica), some are small and very remote (Rabbitkettle Hot springs in the Northwest Territories.). While North America may have a few more items listed, even Africa has it s share, including many little known waterfalls and mountain ranges. I was a geography major in college, and I was stunned at how many of the overseas phenomena I had never even heard of before. The book is a continuing voyage of discovery.

The descriptions of each feature are factually excellent and well written. The photographs are all in color and excellent.
The maps supplied, in some, but not all, instances are clear and well drafted.

Your world will be much broader and more full once you obtain and read this excellent volume. Don't even try it all at once. Just leisurely peruse a few items each time, and your sense of wonder and beauty will grow each time you do. Very, very highly rated.
