Guity by association ... a good book.
I found myself sucked into the story, just wanting to see what happens next. The characters themselves have a familiar appeal, and their interaction makes them all the more real. I look forward to more from Brad Cooper ... and maybe something in a different direction.

Rarely does a piece of literature come along that keeps you so engaged, and is so riveting, that you read the title in one sitting. But that's exactly what "Guilty By Association" is guilty of. While working a 12 hour overtime shift, i found myself doing more reading than working. Every time I would try to put the book down to get work done, the desire to pick it back up was just too strong. You really get to know the characters and what drives them, and you can't wait to know what is going to transpire and what awaits the next page.
Buy this book and be ready to devote some time to not being able to get anything accomplished until you've read the last page.

Guilty By Association is a wonderful debut by author Brad Cooper, whom I definitely hope to read more from in the future. From the first page, I was sucked in to the small town real-life story. There is at least one character that I believe most everyone can relate to in one way or another, which makes it even more exciting to read. Full of surprises, this book kept me in suspense the entire way through. I already look forward to a second book from this author and highly recommend this book to any suspense lover.

Great first time author! Hope to read more from this guy in the future. Not your ordinatry big city tale. Interesting setting and story line, even though story done before (drugs) still great plot and intersting twists and turns including characters and detail. Written with just the right dose of humor and wit.

I would strongly recommend this one! Tell your friends!

What little J. Dave Miller, another original
Arena League player, the author misses is what
should have been more on the very fine QB-RB-KR
Shawn-Ke'ali'i Withy-Allen. Withy alteranted with
the erratic but lovable fellow islander Tim Chang
for 7 of the lat nine games in the 10-4-0, '02
season.

Also, Withy played four years of Indoor Football
and won one Championship and his Fayetteville
Guard played in another Championship. The team
played in several leagues. This book is very good
but not as good as 'The Perfect Season' followup,
which turned out to be ['07] June Jones, III's
last season Coaching the Warrriors [not Rainbows]!

I just purchased this book and it's excellent! The photos are great, the flow of writing easy to follow and keeps the reader enthralled! There were tear-jerking and funny moments mixed with the hard work and serious work ethic of these boys turned men. Overall, it's an inspirational book for anyone who's ever been at the bottom and had only hope to bring them back up again. This is definately one of my favorite books! GO WARRIORS!!!

I live in Hawaii and never realized the unbelievable story of the University of Hawaii Football's dramatic comeback from being an all but forgotten footnote as a loseing fooball program to becomeing one of the nations best! The book is uncompromising in detail of the foritude and perseverence of what one man, coach June jones can do. It's what legends are made of. I haven't played football in over 37 years but it brought back the spirit and love for the game I thought I had forgotten. This book has soul and love for the players outside of the game. This book is hard to put down...I reccommend it to every father who has a son. Every person who loves Hawaii. Anybody who wants to read a 'true hero story!' And the Hawaii football story is still not over yet!

A book that it what it says...

This book has a well-executed literary "gameplan". It discusses the history of the Hawaii program, the origins and meanings in its culture and traditions, the respective backgrounds of so many key figures, and an undeniable thread (Faith, Hope and Redemption)that weaves step by step, through from start to finish, the finish of course being the incredible achievements of an overlooked and under-funded football program long given up for dead.

If someone submitted a movie screenplay of the true stories that make up this book, they'd be laughed off the studio lot. Or at best, the film would be marginalized down to cheap laughs, stereotypical characters and situations.

This is an amazing and compelling story, whether you're a fan of Hawaii football, if you're a fan of sports in general, or even if you've never heard of June Jones or Colt Brennan but just want to read an uncommonly uplifting book. Highly recommended and very timely with their recent success and national recognition.

This book is all you will ever need for any existing hiking trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It details hundreds of trails and includes a trail map of the park. Each trail description is highlighted with an altitude profile that shows elevation changes over mileage. The profile also pinpoints junctions with trailheads, scenic areas, or other landmarks. The book is lightweight so it is easily carried in a pack and it is a bargain for the information it contains.

This book (sometimes called "The Little Brown Book" is by far the best guide to hiking trails in the Smokies. By some miracle of book design, they managed to get comprehensive descriptions of all the officially-maintained trails in the park into a book that you can fit into a jacket pocket. If you only get one book on trails in the Smokies, this is the one you need.

I have several books on the trails in the Smokies, but this is by far the most comprehensive in terms of the number of trails covered and the information covered on each trail. A "must have" for anyone planning a hiking trip in the Smokies. The trail profiles are great.

Excellent book for short or overnight hikes in the Smokies.

This is an excellent reference book for hiking trails in the Smokies. All maintained trails are listed and a description of the trail is given by qualified personnel. The length of the trail, highlights (i.e., interesting features), cautions (i.e., steam crossings, poisonous plants, hunting area), map key, use (horse or hiking), and directions on how to get to the trailhead. Very good book for beginners or experienced hikers. The book is compact and easily fits in a daypack for reference along the trail: also comes with a trail guide map of the Smokies. I like the book because maps are included of each trail showing elevation changes in the trail and a precise description of the trail outlining junctions with other trails, stream crossings, and historic features of the trail.

This book emphasizes the essential connection between research in cognitive neuroscience and designing effective teaching methods. "Brain compatible teaching works." The book explains seven steps of the learning/memory cycle. Through out the book, important concepts are conveniently labeled as mental notes and are placed in boxed off areas. The book is easy to read and even though it contain terms such as: working memory; visual/spatial intelligence; mind mapping; episodic pathways; procedural memory; and metacognition, it is very applicable to classroom teaching. Appendix A "Brain Briefing" offers an excellent review of basic brain function.

This is a fine book: it's crisp, witty, and practical. Academic writing is timid, boring, and wordy, so academics wishing to write for a general audience (also known as "normal people") need a lot of help. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett's book will help professors translate their gnarled text into lively, normal English.

I bought this book out of idle curiosity---its title resembles my book How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing, also from APA Books---but I got a lot out of it. Although aimed at academics, Kendall-Tackett's book would be useful to anyone who wants to publish work for a popular audience. Academics struggling to write the typical fare of journal articles and grant proposals will benefit from this book, too.

First Howard learned to listen
Then he listened to his heart
Now he's facing nasty bullies
And not feeling very smart

No matter what he said or did
He'd always lose his lunch
To bullies like the Snorton Twins
Who loved to rabbit punch

He didn't want to rat them out
He was afraid to tell
But every day they'd beat him up
And make his life a hell

He wished he'd turn invisible
Or fly above the trees
Transform into an Autobot
Or even try to please

But nothing worked until at last
He'd simply had enough
He knew just what he had to do
Before things got too rough

I'd get this book for younger kids
Now starting off to school
So if they're faced with bullying
They'll use the "Howard" Rule

The illustrations are divine
They tell the tale so clearly
This is a book that kids should read
And I say this sincerely

The overall colorful/creative writing skills of the author contributed to my positive acceptance of this novel. I found the book to be paced well as it gave me an opportunity to understand the emotions of the characters. Several scenes had me laughing. There are mysterious forces at work here. The steamy romance coupled with imagination will take you on a journey of passion and eroticism. Definitely one book I was not able to put down. "

Human Masquerade is just that, an enchanted, sensual journey that had me asking myself, "Isn't that what life is"? All we have to do is stop and remember to feel the experience; don't get so caught up in the masquerade that we forget to taste and smell life, even let it touch us. Right from the 1st chapter you lose all sense of conventional time and space. Through the book, we are reminded that life won't always be nice, neat or pretty. As a matter of fact, it's sometimes downright bitter, but that's still part of the journey. As long we let it touch us and acknowledge it, we become real. A special thankyou to the author for putting all that into a language I could understand.

Jenna has gone through many trials to accomplish what she desired. There were strangers watching and listening. These strangers come from the depths of her conscience. Her mind and body are on an emotional rollercoaster. The conversations between her and her conscience are vividly described.
The author has written not just the ordinary,"Let's go have an affair story." It's about an affair of the heart, mind, body and soul. THE HUMAN MASQUERADE is deliciously written. THE HUMAN MASQUERADE is waiting. It could be like the twilight zone. It will leave one continually thinking that the password to life is LOVE.

Playful meeting with psychoanalytic thinking!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-12
"I Have Heard The Mermaids Singing" is a truly remarkable book about a character who works as a psychoanalyst. We are allowed to follow his life both from behind the couch and in his private life, which is a surprising and pleasant way of meeting with Bollas' profound and creative thinking.

This book made me both laugh in recognition about what it is like to be a human being and think for a long time afterwards about the profoundness in the character's thoughts. Beautifully written, the richness of the thoughts in the book has made me return to this book several times, and also to read out passages from it aloud, both to psychoanalysts and people not working in the field, and they could all share the joy of Bollas' outstanding writing.

Above all, this book is another excellent example of Bollas' creative ways of living with independent psychoanalytic thinking, something I find fundamentally important in these times of psychoanalysis in crisis.

Like a dream, Mermaid weaves an unpredictable course along the fuzzy border between psychic reality and the powerful pressures of group life. Anyone who reads this book encounters Bollas's song, a song which, if allowed, will disrupt the reader's internal sea. Those who listen will find that unlike most investigations into the troubled waters of psychoanalysis, this book introduces corruption within psychoanalytic institutions, psychoanalytic technique, and the practices of even the most well meaning practitioners, using the medium of fiction rather than the hard hitting and ostensibly straight forward style of theoretical writing. By using this medium, Bollas offers readers a new way of grappling with the dark regions of psychotherapy, group existence, and private corruption. Through the voice of characters and use of humor, Bollas shakes and loosens our unconscious, inviting the reader to dream one's own solutions and insights into traumatic areas of the human condition. For those interested in developing new dimensions of social consciousness and contact with unconscious life, I highly recommend this book.

Review Date: 2005-09-14
Anyone concerned about the relentless attacks on psychoanalysis as a mode of thinking will learn a great deal from I Have Heard the Mermaids Sing. In using the form of a novella, Christopher Bollas gives us a glimpse of what it feels like to be a psychoanalyst at the dawn of the twenty first century. He effectively punctures the myth of the analyst as arbitor of reality or member of a cult.
Because we experience the world from the perspective of "the psychoanalyst," we get a glimpse of the inner workings of an active mind as the analyst attempts to find the unconscious meaning of his patient's discourse. Most readers will find I Have Heard The Mermaids Singing funny, thoughtful, provocative and challenging. Bollas's psychoanalyst speaks forcefully about depression, the aftermath of the "catastrophe [9/11?]" and the unremitttting attack on imagination and the inner life that defines the contemporary ethos. While these are serious topics, the adventures and misadventures of the psychoanalyst provide comic relief. This novella is a pleasure to read -it defends psychoanalysis, develops a complex and rich theory of depression but never takes itself too seriously even as it deals with the most vexing problems of our era.

Review Date: 2005-09-25
Christopher Bollas's second very personal, fictionalized account of the current state of psychoanalysis and of the deadly elements inherent in mass movements (following "Dark at the End of the Tunnel") cooks up a complex brew of laughter, sympathy, and unease: laughter, because the novella portrays a character who, despite his wisdom and seriousness, can spy the antic in the midst of tragedy; sympathy because any reader familiar with contemporary psychoanalytic controversies, world events, and the capacity for self questioning, can place himself in the protagonist's shoes; and unease because the book captures a prevailing fantasy of impending (and current) worldwide catastrophe. But set against the elements of darkness is Bollas's faith that individual men and women, while being hijacked by social and cultural forces beyond their control, are at the same time creators of their own destinies.
While some readers may be made uncomfortable by Bollas's srikingly expressed views of the psychoanalytic profession, all readers will be confronted by a fertile, intelligent, and funny mind at work.

In Pursuit of Business: sell more, grow more, earn more...live more

This little book packs a big whallop! In nearly 30 years of reading business books this book is simply the best book on business I've ever read. It's the most specific in delivering practical, pragmatic actions you can take now to build the business of your dreams. And it's written in clear straightforward, easy-to-understand language.

It begins with who we must BE in our businesses to succeed and thrive. Then goes on to explain the focus that is mandatory - the customer is the only boss we'll ever have because they pay the bills. It's clearly laid out and explains what business systems are, why they are invaluable, and what to do to get them (don't reinvent - look for mentors - it saves time and gives you certainty that you are using time-tested systems as the basis for building your own business). And there's so much more - all of it practical and clearly laid out.

Let this book be your first (or next) mentor. It's worth every bit of effort you'll put into implementing Mr. Wallin's recommendations. And they are SO worth implementing. As I'm taking my own business to another level I'm using it as a refresher and guide. And having a lot of fun doing so!

Experienced sales and management professional Peter Wallin presents In Pursuit of Business: Sell More, Grow More, Earn More... Live More is a guide to the fine arts of relationship-building and networking in pursuit of a healthier bottom line in business. Written in plain terms, chapters teach the reader how to create relationships that generate referrals, apply the seven habits of successful marketers, improve leadership and management skills, and much more. "A good working board should have at least five members, perhaps more if you feel the need. Be sure to create an annual calendar of meeting dates and try to meet at least four times per year. Always have a written agenda, send meeting notices as well as minutes of previous meetings. This keeps your system organized and professional - and helps you make the most of your board." Highly recommended as a supplementary guide for business owners and anyone pursuing a business career, especially in networking-dependent fields.

Peter Wallin happens to be a good friend of mine. OK, there it is. I am biased. On the other hand, I know firsthand, this guy practices what he preaches.
Here is the straight and skinny about the man and his book from someone who knows him and his game.
* Pete is successful. Choose your definition of the word. He fills it.
* He became successful practicing what he writes about in this book.
* He writes with transparency. He is not phony or plastic.
* He is humble, continually giving credit to those from whom he learned.
* The book is written in plain english - no technical jargon. Glossary not necessary.
* No fluffy "new-paradigm" concepts to wade through. He shares practical, time-tested techniques for you to grow your business.
* What he shares in this book you can do. Yes, YOU.

Are you a small business owner? Or do you want to own a small business? If you answered either of these questions in the affirmative, then you'd probably do yourself a favor to get a copy of this book and give it a read. I'm not saying it is a masterpiece. And I'm not saying it will answer all your questions about how to start and/or run a small business. But what it has to say is something you should have at least read and though about if you are into small business. The book is broken into four parts:

1. The art of communication (1-6)
2. You, the business owner (7-10)
3. Develop your character (11-19)
4. Make it work (20-22)

And it is comprised of 22 chapters:

1. Your enterprise starts with you
2. The strangest secret in the world
3. Meeting people for the first time
4. Persistence, consistence, and luck
5. The lifetime value of your client
6. Who is your real boss?
7. Obtaining referrals
8. Five rules all businesses should follow
9. Seven habits of highly successful marketers
10. Building your network
11. The 8-step cycle
12. Creating a positive attitude
13. Creating a positive language
14. Taking risks for higher rewards
15. Constant and never-ending learning
16. Forming habits
17. Think BIG
18. Setting goals
19. Celebrate your successes
20. Coaches, consultants, and mentors
21. Lead, build, and manage
22. The magic words of success

The author started his career as a salesman of insurance products. And after 11 years he got tired of working for an employer and took his skills set and opened his own insurance agency. Like so many people before him he found out quickly that being self-employed is not as easy as it seems at first glance. To lead and manage a small business requires a whole host of skill sets. And from reading this book I think it is fair to say the author got involved in a lot of self help programs when he made the jump. Programs like Dale Carnegie, Earl Nightingale, Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, and Toastmasters. A lot of the book comes from the Dale Carnegie Course he took (and that I've taken), and the Earl Nightingale tapes I've listened to. And some of the Tony Robbins and Zig Ziglar books, too. Yes, I've read some of those books.

I would have liked the book better if it had not been so ra ra. The author comes off as a salesman rather than an educator. I also would have liked to have heard more coverage about Toastmasters and how it is BOTH a public speaking and leadership program.

Selling insurance is not your typical business. You make a sale once and often times that sale comes back each year whether your sell again or not. The way the author advocates to build relationships works well for someone who sells insurance products (and the nice margins that come with them). But I doubt he would spend all the time and energy he puts into building relationships if he was selling a different product that didn't have the margins or the automatic repeat business he enjoys.

This book is dated to a degree, too. The author did his fair share of cold calling and telemarketing. And that method of prospecting and selling is going by the way side these days. Internet marketing is taking its place and this book says little about Internet marketing. To learn about that topic consider taking a look at Make a Fortune Promoting other People's Stuff Online (ISBN: 0071478132) and read my book review for it on Amazon.

The content included in this book can be found in life coach, personal coach, and small business coaching books. It's quite a mix of material. 4 stars!
