Almost perfect with very few errors about the June Jones Era in Hawai'i FootballReview Date: 2008-05-28
Arena League player, the author misses is what
should have been more on the very fine QB-RB-KR
Shawn-Ke'ali'i Withy-Allen. Withy alteranted with
the erratic but lovable fellow islander Tim Chang
for 7 of the lat nine games in the 10-4-0, '02
season.
Also, Withy played four years of Indoor Football
and won one Championship and his Fayetteville
Guard played in another Championship. The team
played in several leagues. This book is very good
but not as good as 'The Perfect Season' followup,
which turned out to be ['07] June Jones, III's
last season Coaching the Warrriors [not Rainbows]!

A book that it what it says...Review Date: 2007-12-17
If someone submitted a movie screenplay of the true stories that make up this book, they'd be laughed off the studio lot. Or at best, the film would be marginalized down to cheap laughs, stereotypical characters and situations.
This is an amazing and compelling story, whether you're a fan of Hawaii football, if you're a fan of sports in general, or even if you've never heard of June Jones or Colt Brennan but just want to read an uncommonly uplifting book. Highly recommended and very timely with their recent success and national recognition.

No Rest for the WordyReview Date: 2007-07-10
I bought this book out of idle curiosity---its title resembles my book How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing, also from APA Books---but I got a lot out of it. Although aimed at academics, Kendall-Tackett's book would be useful to anyone who wants to publish work for a popular audience. Academics struggling to write the typical fare of journal articles and grant proposals will benefit from this book, too.

Then he listened to his heart
Now he's facing nasty bullies
And not feeling very smart
No matter what he said or did
He'd always lose his lunch
To bullies like the Snorton Twins
Who loved to rabbit punch
He didn't want to rat them out
He was afraid to tell
But every day they'd beat him up
And make his life a hell
He wished he'd turn invisible
Or fly above the trees
Transform into an Autobot
Or even try to please
But nothing worked until at last
He'd simply had enough
He knew just what he had to do
Before things got too rough
I'd get this book for younger kids
Now starting off to school
So if they're faced with bullying
They'll use the "Howard" Rule
The illustrations are divine
They tell the tale so clearly
This is a book that kids should read
And I say this sincerely

THE HUMAN MASQUERADEReview Date: 2006-09-19
The author has written not just the ordinary,"Let's go have an affair story." It's about an affair of the heart, mind, body and soul. THE HUMAN MASQUERADE is deliciously written. THE HUMAN MASQUERADE is waiting. It could be like the twilight zone. It will leave one continually thinking that the password to life is LOVE.

Playful meeting with psychoanalytic thinking!Review Date: 2005-09-12
This book made me both laugh in recognition about what it is like to be a human being and think for a long time afterwards about the profoundness in the character's thoughts. Beautifully written, the richness of the thoughts in the book has made me return to this book several times, and also to read out passages from it aloud, both to psychoanalysts and people not working in the field, and they could all share the joy of Bollas' outstanding writing.
Above all, this book is another excellent example of Bollas' creative ways of living with independent psychoanalytic thinking, something I find fundamentally important in these times of psychoanalysis in crisis.

Psychoanalysis from the inside outReview Date: 2005-09-14
Because we experience the world from the perspective of "the psychoanalyst," we get a glimpse of the inner workings of an active mind as the analyst attempts to find the unconscious meaning of his patient's discourse. Most readers will find I Have Heard The Mermaids Singing funny, thoughtful, provocative and challenging. Bollas's psychoanalyst speaks forcefully about depression, the aftermath of the "catastrophe [9/11?]" and the unremitttting attack on imagination and the inner life that defines the contemporary ethos. While these are serious topics, the adventures and misadventures of the psychoanalyst provide comic relief. This novella is a pleasure to read -it defends psychoanalysis, develops a complex and rich theory of depression but never takes itself too seriously even as it deals with the most vexing problems of our era.
Inspiring, funny, and disquietngReview Date: 2005-09-25
While some readers may be made uncomfortable by Bollas's srikingly expressed views of the psychoanalytic profession, all readers will be confronted by a fertile, intelligent, and funny mind at work.

The Best Little Business Book in ...Review Date: 2007-10-25
This little book packs a big whallop! In nearly 30 years of reading business books this book is simply the best book on business I've ever read. It's the most specific in delivering practical, pragmatic actions you can take now to build the business of your dreams. And it's written in clear straightforward, easy-to-understand language.
It begins with who we must BE in our businesses to succeed and thrive. Then goes on to explain the focus that is mandatory - the customer is the only boss we'll ever have because they pay the bills. It's clearly laid out and explains what business systems are, why they are invaluable, and what to do to get them (don't reinvent - look for mentors - it saves time and gives you certainty that you are using time-tested systems as the basis for building your own business). And there's so much more - all of it practical and clearly laid out.
Let this book be your first (or next) mentor. It's worth every bit of effort you'll put into implementing Mr. Wallin's recommendations. And they are SO worth implementing. As I'm taking my own business to another level I'm using it as a refresher and guide. And having a lot of fun doing so!
Highly recommended as a supplementary guide for business ownersReview Date: 2007-10-06

A mix of self promotion books, self help books, sales books, and leadership books. Not bad!Review Date: 2007-10-24
Are you a small business owner? Or do you want to own a small business? If you answered either of these questions in the affirmative, then you'd probably do yourself a favor to get a copy of this book and give it a read. I'm not saying it is a masterpiece. And I'm not saying it will answer all your questions about how to start and/or run a small business. But what it has to say is something you should have at least read and though about if you are into small business. The book is broken into four parts:
1. The art of communication (1-6)
2. You, the business owner (7-10)
3. Develop your character (11-19)
4. Make it work (20-22)
And it is comprised of 22 chapters:
1. Your enterprise starts with you
2. The strangest secret in the world
3. Meeting people for the first time
4. Persistence, consistence, and luck
5. The lifetime value of your client
6. Who is your real boss?
7. Obtaining referrals
8. Five rules all businesses should follow
9. Seven habits of highly successful marketers
10. Building your network
11. The 8-step cycle
12. Creating a positive attitude
13. Creating a positive language
14. Taking risks for higher rewards
15. Constant and never-ending learning
16. Forming habits
17. Think BIG
18. Setting goals
19. Celebrate your successes
20. Coaches, consultants, and mentors
21. Lead, build, and manage
22. The magic words of success
The author started his career as a salesman of insurance products. And after 11 years he got tired of working for an employer and took his skills set and opened his own insurance agency. Like so many people before him he found out quickly that being self-employed is not as easy as it seems at first glance. To lead and manage a small business requires a whole host of skill sets. And from reading this book I think it is fair to say the author got involved in a lot of self help programs when he made the jump. Programs like Dale Carnegie, Earl Nightingale, Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, and Toastmasters. A lot of the book comes from the Dale Carnegie Course he took (and that I've taken), and the Earl Nightingale tapes I've listened to. And some of the Tony Robbins and Zig Ziglar books, too. Yes, I've read some of those books.
I would have liked the book better if it had not been so ra ra. The author comes off as a salesman rather than an educator. I also would have liked to have heard more coverage about Toastmasters and how it is BOTH a public speaking and leadership program.
Selling insurance is not your typical business. You make a sale once and often times that sale comes back each year whether your sell again or not. The way the author advocates to build relationships works well for someone who sells insurance products (and the nice margins that come with them). But I doubt he would spend all the time and energy he puts into building relationships if he was selling a different product that didn't have the margins or the automatic repeat business he enjoys.
This book is dated to a degree, too. The author did his fair share of cold calling and telemarketing. And that method of prospecting and selling is going by the way side these days. Internet marketing is taking its place and this book says little about Internet marketing. To learn about that topic consider taking a look at Make a Fortune Promoting other People's Stuff Online (ISBN: 0071478132) and read my book review for it on Amazon.
The content included in this book can be found in life coach, personal coach, and small business coaching books. It's quite a mix of material. 4 stars!

I found myself sucked into the story, just wanting to see what happens next. The characters themselves have a familiar appeal, and their interaction makes them all the more real. I look forward to more from Brad Cooper ... and maybe something in a different direction.
