Five Years Later, This Is Still The Best Sports Book I've Ever ReadReview Date: 2008-10-30
It's the combination of fascinating mini-biographies of Seabiscuit's owner, trainer and jockey that make this book so entertaining. These were fascinating people and if you were a horse racing fan, the era was just about perfect. People went nuts over horse racing, baseball and boxing. It's not like today where football, basketball and hockey share the limelight, sports-wise.
Author Laura Hillebrand's account of owner Charles Howard, trainer Tom Smith and jockey "Red" Pollard are just incredible. These man have amazing stories and what they and Seabiscuit attained in racing, are almost unbelivable.....yet everything in this easy-to-read book is true. From the early pages on, the book hooks you in to the point where you care deeply about all the main characters.
I'll always remember getting to the chapter which told about the famous match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral. Hillenbrand had done such a great job of building up to that, I almost didn't want to read on for fear I would be greatly disappointed. That's how involving her book was for me, and for many others.
I guess the highest praise I can give this book is so good that it got me back reading, after a long absence.

The "Bible" for ropework and knotting...Review Date: 2008-08-29
The Root of All KnotsReview Date: 2008-07-31
Although the book can be hard to understand when trying to tie knots, no colors, videos or animated gifs, it is quite useful when trying to identify a knot that I want to tie.
I knew what I was getting as I had read the libraries copy before making the decision to purchase so I am not at all disappointed with my book.
This is also an excellent book for reading if you enjoy tying knots.
If you have more than a passing interest in knots then you will want to consider buying this book.

Maui on a budgetReview Date: 2008-11-08
Guided around by following the highway milepost markers was brilliant and we never missed a turnoff. They also tipped us off to not leaving anything on our car seats and not parking where we saw broken windshield glass. The Keanae Arboretum (free) and Twin Falls (free) were two favorite stops. There's a nominal entrance fee at the Maui Swap Meet but it is also a must do.
These are not your typical guidebooks. The graphics are clean and the information is easy to get to. There are tons of photos. If you like to travel independently, even if you're not on a budget, I recommend these popular books.

Take it with you on the road. I strongly recommend seeing the Hana Highway in a convertible. Our twisty ride out there in the early morning was awesome.

Fifteen day vacationReview Date: 2008-02-24
The tips for getting out to Hana were treasure trove status and put us out in front of the chain of cars we saw heading out at 2pm. Leaving at 7:30 am before the tour buses made all the difference. We could have used another few days on Maui and regret taking only one hike down into the crater. We plan another visit in 2009 and our first order of business will be watching the sunrise on Haleakala and taking a helicopter tour.
Thanks Trailblazers for sharing and demystifying wowie Maui.

The world of professional swimmingReview Date: 2007-12-24
Water is goldReview Date: 2007-08-23
Narrative of the Pursuit of ExcellenceReview Date: 2008-10-11
The characters are almost too distinctively defined - they seem like players in a Dickens novel. From the hard working underdog (Wilkens), the confident veteran (Grote), the cold technician (Wales), or the scarred phenom (Blahnik), anyone who reads this can find a person and a situation that they can relate to. The book is so much bigger than just swimming; it describes the process and pitfalls, the "agony and the ecstacy" of choosing to follow a dream.
I have never attempted to compete at the Olympics, but I have won and lost my share of races. The author uses his own firsthand experience as a competitive swimmer to provide surgical insights into the emotions of the athletes. He discusses the hunger for victory, the confusion of failing to meet expectations, and the eventual tedium of training as only a person who has felt it for himself can.
I would recommend this book to just about anyone, but especially anyone interested in studying how different personalities face a challenge.

Behind the Gold MedalsReview Date: 2008-06-19
Greg Louganis is not alone in recovering from this paradoxical situation, but his story is a moving and powerful one nonetheless. It also provides hope to us who will never be Olympic medalists but still suffer from self doubt and self destructive ways.

The author has made great introspections on his life and through the chapters on his childhood, family, diving career as well as relationships, you will be inspired to think along of your own and relate it to his stories. It is not only readng a story of the author but also a soul-searching journey of your own.
It does not matter that you are not a professional diver or have little interest in the sport since the chapters on diving do not include technical details that bore the non-sportlovers. Instead they display how Greg Louganis accomplished his achievements through years of hard work and perseverance rather than depending on his good look or luck, if any.
His story of success in career is as thought-provoking as the later chapters on his struggle to live with HIV-positive and pursuit of the cause of non-discrimination against gays.
Also the photos in the book are fantastic. You can see some on his childhood, friends and family, diving and a few of them are gorgeous and sexy(e.g.centerfold in Playgirl)that won't disappoint you.
We must give the author a credit that he did not show off how many important people he had ever taken pictures with but included those who are important to his life. If you challenge me about the two photos of the presidents, don't judge him too soon, look at the caption and you will know why.
The third last sentence of the book is "I just hope I have enough time to make a difference". After reading the book, you will agree with me that he did and did it amazingly. Thank you, Greg Louganis.
Insightful and interesting.Review Date: 2005-08-24
Greg and Eric put together Greg's story very well, never once causing me to wonder what was going on. From the very beginning I was amused by Greg's thoughts and concerned although he was talking about something that had happened over a decade ago (seven years ago when the book was written). Greg did not tell his story from a casual perspective. He was upfront with his emotions and I felt like I really got to know who this guy was and I came to care a great deal about him.
Greg Louganis is the sort of person that should be admired and respected not only for his athletic and acting (let's just think about Jeffrey here...) accomplishments but for his strength and courage. For someone who used to have such a distorted self-perception he grew into a rather wise and very beautiful man. He tells his life story with such compassion, humour, and care that it's difficult to believe he used to think so poorly of himself.
This man is one of my role models and I highly suggest that anyone and everyone read this book.

Your Personal Swim CoachReview Date: 2008-10-28
I am looking forward to starting the various workouts. The workouts are categorized into 6 levels, ranging from "Basic Skills Workouts" to "High-Intensity Workouts."
There are 60 workouts, 10 for each level:
Level 1: Basic Skills Workouts
Level 2: Skill Development Workouts
Level 3: Full-Stroke Swimming Workouts
Level 4: Lactate Threshold Workouts
Level 5: Speed Workouts
Level 6: High-Intensity Workouts
Part IV of the book is entitled "Training Over the Long Haul." Chapter 14 puts it all together in terms of scheduling your workouts with recommendations for swimming programs (for example: Level 1, workout 1 on Sunday; Level 1, workout 2 on Tuesday; etc.). These sample programs/schedules are presented in an easy-to-read chart form that you can jot down in your training notebook and adjust to fit your week.
Coach Hines writes in a conversational style, and the book contains many helpful illustrations. I have no doubt that incorporating this book into your swimming program will reap huge benefits for a swimmer at any skill level.

Next Best Thing to Studying with Emmett in PersonReview Date: 2008-08-25
I was at first skeptical that a book format of these concepts would be possible or as good as swimming with him personally, but this book completely blew that notion out of the water (so to speak). As I read the text and studied the diagrams, I was completely impressed with his abilities to communicate via the written word. It is an easy read, and the ideas are explained clearly and woven together beautifully. Studying this book, applying the concepts, and following the workouts will take you from complete novice highly skilled and efficient swimmer. I keep a copy of it on my nightstand, and it will probably remain there for many years to come. This book is a must read for anyone who thinks he might be interested in learning to swim or improving their already advanced swimming skills.
