On The Wings Of Modernism: The United States Air Force Academy is the unique architectural study of the 50-year-old U.S. Air Force Academy, examining both its history and the forces both artistic and practical that permanently shaped this long standing edifice. Black-and-white photographs enhance this tasteful and commemorative discussion that reveals a modernistic institution with deep roots in bureaucratic and political processes.

I did study at Kent State Uneversity, where this field is studied at high level. This book was always in great demand and I would advise to anyone to get the book whatever it takes. I also purchased the 5th edition of this ASHE Series in this field and it really is very professional one. Edited By Mr. Christopher Brown, the book really should be on the table of everyone who is in this business of higher education administration. The book includes articles about organization, organizational structure and many aspects so much well known to the people, who are familiar with this business.

A landmark book on the history of composition studies

Brereton's work is a must read for all master's and doctoral students, since it gives the historical background of the scholarly field of composition studies and rhetoric. Knowing this history is crucial for scholars, foundational as it is to composition theory, and to teacher-practitioners if we are to continue to make writing meaningful for out students.
Unfortunately, it seems to have gone out of print. Perhaps Brereton is preparing a second edition. This book is important as public perceptions of the teaching of rhetoric and of writing in the United States continues to be linked with the competency (or lack thereof) of students emerging form our high schools and universities.

An off-beat, totally charming look at college life.

Our heroine, Evelyn, is a freshman at college, and we follow her exuberant experiences as she plunges into the discovery of quirky acquaintances and the oddities of college life, pictured by Langton at her whimsical best. Most charming of all are here passionate "unsendable love letters" to the professor she has a mad crush on. At once savvy and innocent, determined to meet life head-on, Evelyn's first year of independance is a joy to share. Read this book, it's a treat!

The title and seemingly narrow focus (and, indeed, the introduction) of this book might make it seem like a study suited only for academics. However, it most clearly is not. What is most remarkable about this book is how Baker paints portraits of the many, many ordinary (yet extraordinary) African-American individuals who were truly the prime movers in the struggle for educational opportunity in Charleston. The stories of these individuals and the durable obstacles they faced in gaining access to the most basic educational rights are both inspirational and deeply troubling.
In the course of the book, Baker also lays bare the way in which the white establishment of Charleston fought in every manner possible to insure that blacks would not be educated with whites and then, when it lost that battle, did everything in its power to insure that few blacks would "enjoy" that right. Baker rightly raises, but does not answer, the question of whether a strategy of dispensing with the hope for integration and instead creating well-funded black institutions might have, in the long run, better served the African-American community of Charleston.
Equally interesting and equally disturbing is the book's argument that the genesis and use of standardized testing--so much a part of the educational landscape today--was rooted in an a conscious attempt on the part of the white establishment to deny access to equal pay for black teachers and equal educational opportunity for African American students.
Anyone interested in issues related to the history of African-American education, equity in education, or testing--be it of teachers or students--would be wise to read this book.

Collectible nirvana plus an entertaining read

This goes way beyond being simply a football button book. Yes, it is button collector's nirvana for certain. But it's also an informed commentary on the history, highlights, and championship teams produced by Penn State and Joe Paterno over a 32-year period. From the feisty Lions mascot on the front cover to the photographs sprinkled throughout, this book is loaded with intriguing trivia and presented in a fun, charming, and entertaining style. Both authors grew up in the shadow of Mt. Nittany. Penn State and Beaver Stadium have always been a large part of their lives. Both are PSU alumni and witnessed the Paterno years up close and personal.
The booster buttons represented in this book were produced by bank sponsors, free to everyone, and are a tradition at Penn State. PSU football buttons represent the longest continuous promotion of a college sports program in the nation. Every button for every game is featured. Not coincidentally, the button promotion began in the early years of Paterno's position as head coach for PSU. I'm from Nebraska - Cornhusker country - and know very little about football, but even I know that Paterno is an icon among college coaches.
Featured with each button are game summaries, statistics, and memorable moments. Even to a non-fan, these tidbits of trivia were enlightening. In particular, I found the origins of Paterno's master plan for succeessful athletes to be of interest. Paterno believed it possible and desirable for world class athletes to maintain academic integrity while playing football. His holistic approach has been proven sound for almost four decades. His three point philosophy is simple: teamwork, high academic standards, and personal responsibility are required to be a Nittany Lion. Season by season, cycle by cycle, he applies his formula and philosohy for the long haul. Paterno and the Lions may be bent from time to time but never broken for long. Further commentary examines the Lions' Top 100 Games, and the team's up and down cycles, which in retrospect demonstrate a certain predictability.
The authors and publisher arranged their book in large font and easy-to-read layout. The collectible buttons were delightful. No review would be complete without listing a few of my favorites, all of which were a sly play on words:
Driving Mich Crazy -- PSU vs. Michigan 1997
Crimson Cried -- PSU vs. Alabama 1989
Irish Go Blah -- PSU vs. Notre Dame 1982
Kick Wisconsin's Dairy Air -- PSU vs. Wisconsin 2003
Get Reel, Virginia -- PSU vs. Virginia 2001
For die hard Penn State fans this book is a must have, but it would be entertaining reading for both fans and foes. Devotees of college football will enjoy the inside information and fascinating trivia. Button collectors will have a field day. And even those like me, who know nothing whatsoever about football, will be entertained by what the authors offer in this book. It would make a wonderful gift for any sports fan you know. Adding to its considerable appeal is the knowledge that a portion of the price of each book sold will benefit the Penn State Blue Band, cheerleaders, and dance team.
