I am at a small college but I felt the ideas presented in this book (aimed at a large college) give really wonderful perspectives towards protecting a campus. Even very simple ideas like crime prevention, adding bushes and trees to make a campus look visually less inviting to criminals, can inspire more ideas. Good for the basics.

This is a comprehensive handbook without being so overwhelming that you never finish it. The wisdom is from the seasoned careers of professional officers in college and university fund raising, yet translated well for the lay person.

I attended a conference presentation where two of the editors outlined some of the ideas that are presented in the book. The information about negotiating salaries, finding a mentor, and dealing with departmental politics and the personal stories presented will provide invaluable for anyone starting out in academia, or even for those who have been there a while!

It too bad that this talented author devoted herself to such arcane topics. Had she exerted the same effort with more popular themes she would have easily qualified for a Pulitzer. This text is so perfectly edited I challenge anyone to find substantial fault anywhere between its covers. Bravo Virginia!

"Catholic Women's Colleges in America" finally addresses a notable gap in women's history, American educational history, and Catholic educational history. From the last third of the 1800's, congregations of Catholic religious women - nuns - created more than 225 institutions of higher learning for women. Numerous generations of women (and later men) were educated in these institutions. Because of the students' modest economic circumstances, many would not have received an education but for these institutions and these religious women. Recent histories of American higher education and Catholic higher education either ignore or pay only passing attention to the fact that more than half of all present-day Catholic colleges in the United States were formed by these women. The multiple authors of this edited book examine the colleges' history, importance, failings, and present challenges stemming from the steady disappearance of nuns from the American landscape. Along the way, and perhaps more importantly, they tell many of the individual stories of these religious women and their colleges. The chapters are well-written, and easily accessible to the lay reader. While my own judgment is that the religious character of these institutions is currently at more risk of disappearing than the editors allow, one cannot but be moved by the story, faith and determination of these religious women to educate women in the United States. Thanks to Schier and Russett for bringing this story to print.

This is one of the best books about Cambridge that i own. It's a hybrid of a picture book, full of dazzling photos of the colleges and surrounding town, and a brief history of each college and the town of Cambridge itself. It isn't as long or as wordy as a full history might have been but take it for what it is.
For those who've been there, it is a trip down memory lane which showcases the most beautiful, the most intriguing, and the most fascinating sights in Cambridge, with a good bit of information about each.
For those who haven't been, or are planning to go, this book acts as a tourguide, complete with map. It points out the very best there is to see and how to get there.
I would (and have) recommend this book for anyone with an interest in Cambridge. It's almost like taking a daytrip there.

This book examines state policy and higher educational reform in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The dearth of attention to the postsecondary experience of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean makes this a very special contribution to the literature in the field, where present literature focuses primarily on Central and Latin America, the larger context of globalization, or specific issues like financing, equity, and quality. The authors weigh variables of economic environments, political institutions, and culture as they analyze the evolution of higher educational policy and post-secondary institutional change. Their analyses at once show the commonality of problems across Caribbean national boundaries, and illuminate the ways in which processes of educational change and reform differ between the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.
The authors conclude that the convergence of higher education trends and reforms in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic are not serendipitous (including the shared experience of "brain drain" emigration to the continental United States), underscoring the need for Caribbean post-secondary institutions and their respective states to explore new linkages and deepen existing transnational interconnectedness. Numerous barriers and challenges remain; the book ends with an extensive discussion of future agendas in higher education and public policy on these islands and in New York City.

This book is a lifesaver, complete with flowcharts of possible problems, descriptions of illnesses, what to do for your child and when to call the doctor. Most helpful of all are the many pictures of what rashes, etc. actually look like. I heartily recommend this for anyone with children.

An important study of Higher education in China
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-08
Review Date: 1999-11-08
This is an outstanding and well researched book which discusses how the Chinese higher education (University and Institute) system has modernised and developed relations with foreign education providers, particular universities. A case study analytical approach is used to add specific aspects to the book, which is one of the finest assessments of how East can work with West to the mutual benefit of both. Hayhoe combines an erudite approach with an enthusiasm and freshness for her subject which makes this a compulsive, yet academically thorough, read. Her perspective is that of an educationalist; but her analysis and overall discussion has value for researchers from other disciplines such as international marketers seeking to develop an understanding of the Chinese higher education system as a market for foreign cooperation and entry. Anyone interested in the Chinese higher education system should read this book. Similarly no university should enbteer the Chinese market without gaining an understanding of the complexities of the market, and the nature of Sino-Foreign academic cooperation as discussed in this (and other Hayhoe) books.
