This book covers everything you need to know to pass the Dantes Health exam. It's well worth its cost, if you want/need a high passing score.

I just completed a health class and this was the textbook we used. I learned so much from using this book. This book is precise and to the point. It provides you with colorful pictures, charts, and definitions that's superb. It provides great information on Weight Management, Cancer, Heart Disease, Illicit Drugs, and Alchohol.

No health class should go with out this book. This is defintely a great teaching tool for those that are taking a health class, or simply a great reference guide. I give this book five stars.

The 1999 Edition of Access to Health by Donatelle and Davis is excellent! User friendly writing style, colors, charts, references, and a comprehensive collection of chapters that cover all the key personal health related topics. From human sexuality to societal violence, the text covers all the bases. The authors have worked hard to bring this Edition up to date with the most current health research references/topics. I strongly recommend considering adoption for any introductory personal health course.

I think I read all of Max Schulman's books while attending Florida State University in 1947, the year FSU was born. Until then, except for The Holy Bible, I had read little fiction and suddenly realized what I'd been missing. The best part was talking with girls about my new reading habit. It apparently impressed them and I got laid a lot. Thanks, Max.

At the suggestion of my father, who read the book while in the AirCorp in WWII, I decided to read this book. I believe it to be one of the funniest books I have ever read! It is a timeless classic about a small town boy and his transition into college life. It covers all the problems that freshman face: going to see an advisor for suggestions on classes, the courses themselves, the attempt to make friends, the different type of people one meets on a university campus, and the homesickness one feels for their family and an old love. This book is a well written comedy that you will not be able to put down!

When I was in high school I was a big fan of the writer Max Shulman. He published "Barefoot Boy With Cheek" in 1943 when he was in his early twenties, a new graduate of the University of Minnesota. ("The University of Minnesota is, of coure, wholly imaginary.") There he had earned a reputation as the editor of "Ski-U-Mah," the campus humor magazine. He published a half dozen novels, two of which became musical comedies on Broadway, while two others became television series and movies. He is probably best known for "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," which became a successful TV series, and "The Tender Trap," a movie starring Debbie Reynolds.

I recently came across a well-worn copy of "Barefoot Boy---" in a used-book store and read it again. It's an outrageous satire of college life, a story of the hilarious freshman year of Asa Hearthrug at the (imaginary) University of Minnesota.

"St. Paul and Minneapolis extend from the Mississippi River like the legs on a pair of trousers. Where they join is the University of Minnesota."

Asa is promptly registered into a liberal arts program in order to become a "well rounded-out personality," and is then recruited into the Alpha Cholera fraternity, where he emotionally joins in singing the frat song:

"Stand, good men, take off your hat
To Alpha Cholera, our swell frat.
In our midst you'll find no rat,
And don't let anyone tell you that."

He soon meets Yetta Samovar, and is promptly recruited into the Minnesota Chapter of the Subversive Elements League, where he emotionally joins in singing:

"Workers, workers,
Don't be shirkers,
There's a job we have to do.
Flee your prison,
Collectivism
Is the thing for you to do."

Back at Alpha Cholera he gets invited to a sorority song-title party at Beta Thigh, which he attends as "Tea for Two," with a silver tea service balanced on his head. His date, arranged by his frat brother, is the beautiful Noblesse Oblige, whose song title costume includes a smudge pot attached to her navel. "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," of course!

Asa becomes torn between Noblesse, the fraternity, and the Belongers, or Yetta, the Subversives, and the Unbelongers.

He loses his bid as the dark horse candidate for the student council, flunks all his classes, and returns to his home at Whistlestop and his girlfriend Lodestone La Toole.

Each chapter of the book is preceded by a penetrating quotation in French or Latin, like the one I chose as the title for this review.

An appreciation, or at least a tolerance, for silliness and absurdity is the minimum requirement to enjoy this outrageous satire of college life. I will highly recommend the book to those with that appreciation or tolerance.

You may or may not be aware of this characteristic of Minnesota Scandinavians: We LOVE to make fun of ourselves!

I first read this book in high school (in the mid '50's). I still haven't stopped laughing when I think about it. I want my h/s son to read it, since he's thinking about going to college soon. I think Asa's adventures would help him. Or, have I misspelled "Asa's name." I sure hope not. It's a great book, really, and are Shulman's others.

I don't know why Amazon says this book is from January 2003, as the used one I ordered says 2001. I already had this edition and used it well to seek out a Bachelors completion program in 2001. I read it cover to cover and selected a school based on some of the more specific comments on completion programs - very good advice, and a very good school - great personal service. I also have Bear's Guide to Earning a Degree by Distance Education, which I used to search out an MBA in the UK, and I've loaned that one to friends. He does a great job. I've also read his work on accreditation extensively, since I work for a non-accredited school. Too bad this book isn't up to date as now I want an MSc in Education and Technology and there have been alot of changes in the past two years particularly in this area. For example, the London program I liked in 2001 has been discontinued and the new one won't start til 2004. I was hoping for more ideas on where to turn now.

Dr. John Bear has once again provided the distance learner with an excellent resource volume. This newest addition to the Bears' Guide collection is a must have for those interested in educational programs via distance learning. Co-authored by Mariah Bear, Tom Head and Thomas Nixon, "Bears' Guide to the Best Education Degrees" profiles over 350 fully accredited distance learning credential and degree programs, ranging from the bachelor's through the doctorate. An entire chapter is devoted to meeting teacher licensing requirements, along with contact information for all fifty states.

As in previous editions, the value and importance of a properly accredited degree is discussed. Since degree mills have become problematic, both in the US and abroad, a degree from a properly accredited school is essential. Accreditation by an agency recognized by the US Dept. of Education, or its foreign equivalent, assures broad utility and recognition of a degree. By profiling only schools with this type of accreditation, Bear provides the distance learner with credible, legitimate and substantive options.

Several specific areas are detailed in terms of degree emphasis and specialization, e.g., administration, educational technology, religious education, library science, special education, distance education, K-12 and early childhood education, curriculum, etc.

Without reservation, this book is recommended for anyone interested in distance learning educational programs, as well as for reference use.

You can trust Bear to give you acurate, honest information on the schools he covers. This book is specifically written for anyone looking for a degree in the education field. Childhood development, elementary, ect. He covers it all including teaching credentuals, bachelor's degreees, master's degrees, and doctorates. I've bought other distance learning books but it's hard to go through each school looking not only for creditionals you can trust but also for the degree you want. I like the fact that this book only covers the type of degrees I'm interested in. Bear's also has several other distance degree books if education is not your field of study.

I have a few of John Bear's books in my study and this book is a terrific publication. If you would like to earn your Education degree via distance learning...this is the book for you. You will find its authors have compiled an excellent resource pointing you in the right direction. Plenty of information is given concerning specific state certification and how you can navigate the need for student teaching via distance learning.

Buy this book if you are serious about earning an education degree!

I absolutely loved BEHIND CLOSED DOORS...it was such a romantic book! In this one, Jessica is mistakenly signed up to take a course in Medevil History when she asked for Film History. But then she learns that her Medevil History professor, the new, young, hot, sexy, mysterious, and popular, Louis Miles, feels attraction toward her...and she begins to feel attraction AND confusion when she knows he likes her but keeps trying to push her away because of some dark secret from his past.

And all this while, Elizabeth and Todd are trying to track down who attacked Todd. And Winston cheats on his pyhsics exam because he is failing pyhsics and if he does not pass, then his parents will send him to a different school and he won't be able to see Denise, his girlfriend, anymore. Tom goes off to Las Vages for a reporting job.

Great, well-written novel! I congradaulate Laurie John for an excellent novel and a terrific addition to the SWEET VALLEY UNIVERSITY series. If you're an SVU fan, this is definitely for you! The romance and affection between Jessica and Professor Louis Miles will have you engrossed 'til the end and be begging for more! I totally recommend this book.

As well as all the other books in the SVU series, I thought this book was FANTASTIC. As I read, I realized Winstons experiences were simalar to other College, or even High School or Middle School, students inwhich they are tempted to cheat on exams or even a simple thing like Homework. The Way Lourie John expresses the Character's Feelings throughout the book made me feel like it was a true story.Students and other young girls that have followed the Sweet Valley Characters through all the Sweet Valley series will defintely enjoy the SVU adventures of Elizabeth, Jessica, Winston and all the others while they come across new characters throughout the years. This book is excellent. Each storyline is exciting, and everything is intense. Jessica Wakefeeld is depressed after her losses. SHe has loved many men, but afetr many relationships goen wron, she decides to cry to dodge love, but fails. She, who usually parties all day and night, decides to go to a bookstore. She feels out of place, but meets an interesting guy there. Louis Miles is unlike any guy she's ever met, but totally not her type. But, he manages to get her itnerested in Midevil history. But, when she fidns out that he is her professor, she is shocked. She soon falls in love with him. They share nice talks, and one day, at the beach, she sees Louis walkign around on the rocks. It turns out Louis was thinking of her at the exact same moment, and there she comes. They talk and have romantic thoughts about eachother. Louis, meanwhile is trying to escape his wife, wo has been giving him death threats. Jessica is his only pride and joy. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Wakfield is sad that Tom Watts, her boyfriend, is leaving for a few eeks in L.A. Suddenly, whenever she mentions Todd WIlkins, her ex-boyfriend and Tom's worst enemy, he begins to grow cold toward her. He gives ehr a supposedly boring assignment. She is furious that Tom won't let her work on helping Todd get back on the team. But she agrees. Little does she know that this boring assignment is the most exciting story ever! Slowly she finds out more and more. SHe works on it with Todd, which infuriates Tom. Tom tells her to stop, but Elizabeth doesn't give up. As Elizabeth and Todd come closer and closer to exposing the story, it keeps on getting more and more dangerous. It's really interesting. Meanwhile, Lila Fowler and Bruce Patman are moving in together. Also, Winston Egbert is working hard on a test, but he's worried that if he doesn't pass it, him and Denise Waters will be separated. This book is exciting, engrossing, and a real page turner. This book is great!

I wasn't picking out the book because it seemed interesting. I picked it out thinking oh something to do. It ended up that I couldn't put it down once I started Reading it. It kept me very well interested and wanting more after i was finished reading. So if you like the romance mystery novels this is the one.

This book is absolutely essential if you want to understand what television has done to Western Civilization. It is not a rant against shabby programming but a brilliant analysis of what the medium itself does to us, regardless of content. Marc is a compassionate and witty writer and his book deserves to be widely known and discussed.

The main point of Bonfire of the Humanities is that there isn't a difference any more between what used to be called High and Low Culture. These categories might have been hard to define, but at least academics used to know where to put Titus Andronicus and where to put Star Trek.

The Low Culture David Marc is most interested in is television, which he points out controls us by delivering pleasure, not pain, as dystopian literature sometimes predicted.

But there were artists who foresaw how we would get hooked on TV. (Even the expression "hooked on" reduces the viewer to just another plug-in.) I remember a scene in Francois Truffaut's film Fahrenheit 451, where the fireman's wife is is watching/participating in a TV soap opera. The characters stop and address her by name, asking what they should do about the latest plot complication.

What's worse is I don't remember if the scene is in Ray Bradbury's novel, which I read, or not. But I still remember the image from the movie. I've been educated out of the reading culture and into the viewing culture just like the character in Truffaut's film.

What makes Marc's essays so informative (and a lot funnier to read in places than most university press books) is that he isn't a partisan of one culture over the other. He criticizes teachers who have allowed their students to graduate without developing a love for reading and writing as well as the professional curmudgeons who want to limit "education" to some cannon they've decided on.

Did you know that reading Madame Bovary and watching Beavis and Butthead might drive you to the same kind of antisocial behavior? Huh huh huh.

The film critic David Thomson said that there have been two terrible threats to humankind in the second half of the twentieth century - - nuclear weapons and television, and that the way it turned out television was the more insidious, beamed into our brains every day.

I am a doctoral student in English and I teach multiple sections of Freshman Composition. This is the first book this presents a recognizable picture of the contemporary classroom: a place where literacy is taught as a specialist's skill to students immersed in television culture. If you are interested in the future of reading and writing, I recommend this book highly. It is also hilariously funny.

To his credit, Marc, an erstwhile literary scholar, doesn't delve into the pseudo-academic question of whether television is or isn't a cornerstone of contemporary American culture. Instead, he examines what actually has transpired in the US -- the wholesale acceptance (and enjoyment) of the medium -- and describes its impact on the ever changing landscape of the Republic. With an oftentimes acerbic wit, Marc, lifts the curtain on the great Oz, allowing us to see who we are and what we've become, intellectually and culturally, whether we want to admit it or not. Ample notes let the reader discover further musings on the effects of this commonplace appliance. Overall, a brilliant -- if not disquieting -- social critique of Americans and our often reviled, often beloved boob tube.

Having attended Brandeis University, this book is very accurate. It tells of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The college prowler series is great and I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking at a four year school.

Everyone looks at different things while searching for colleges. Some want rural, others want suburban, but really everyone just wants to find a place that feels like home to them. This information cannot be found using statistics alone. What high school students need is to hear about other people's experiences at college, and that is exactly what these guide books give. I am confident that Brandeis University is the school for me after reading this guide, and I recommend this product to anyone who is in the process of searching for their own college that would feel like home to them.

If you're having a hard time figuring out what college to go to, there's no better resourse than the College Prowler books. In most college guide books you get 3 pages about a college and most of the information is so generic, you can look it up on the school's website. College Prowler gives you about 150 pages of the purist information out there: information that comes right from the students. If you can't make up your mind about which college to go to, definitely check out these books. I think shelling out a couple of dollars to decide the next 4 years of your life is definitely worth it. And there's no better value than the College Prowler. Check it out for yourself.

Having grown up in Maryland and evolved into an ACC basketball fanatic (even attending dreaded NC State), Cole Classics brought back wonderful memories of idols, games and the cold, crisp days of college basketball on Tobacco Road. I kept turning pages and saying, "Oh yeah, I remember him"! From great triumphs to mind-boggling losses, it all came back with a smile and a story for MY young kids. Fantastic reading, great stories and even greater memories!

In March 2002, a great piece of sports history closed its doors for the last time...Cole Field House. Home to the University of Maryland Terrapin basketball teams for 47 years, the 2001-2002 season was the last season that Cole would be host some of the greatest college basketball ever played. "Cole Classics" is a wonderful way to journey through the past and remember all the great moments that were visited upon hardwood there. "Cole Classics" remembers all the great games, from Maryland's 'slowdown' victory over #2 South Carolina back in the early 1970's to a stunning overtime victory in 1998 over a #1 North Carolina team just 10 days after getting dismantled by Duke, to 2001's 35-point season finale destruction of a good Virginia team that foreshadowed Maryland's run to the Final Four for the first time in history. In addition to highlighting the great games, "Cole Classics" also remember the great players and coaches who graced the Maryland program through the years.

Published prior to Cole's last season in order to capitalize on the nostalgia and demand for memorabilia of this arena, "Cole Classics" is missing a key element, the final season. In this final year, Maryland added another #1-ranked victim to its count when Maryland hammered Duke 87-73 in the last game to be played by these two teams at Cole. There is probably no other arena in the country that has proven to be a graveyard to as many #1 ranked opponents as Cole. In addition, Maryland finished the season undefeated at home for only the third time in school history. Oh, and there was that little think about a National Championship. This would have been a satisfyingly complete remembrance of Cole if the publishers had waited and the last season had been included. Aside from that omission, however, "Cole Classics" still serves as a marvelous scrapbook at one of the true sports landmarks in college basketball.

The book has a great way of jogging your memory of those great ACC battles from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Each mini-chapter tells the story of the old Maryland stars and big games. The book has lots of great photos and terrific quotes like this one from Derrick Lewis:

"We ran one play all year and we got away with it because Lenny [Bias] played like Superman. He was double-teamed and triple-teamed every night, and they couldn't stop him. I remember asking him, 'How do you do it?' Lenny said, 'If you want it more than they do, they can't stop you. You have to be intense all the time and you won't have a problem.' "

The final chapters bring you up to this year's team by including profiles of Gary Williams, Juan Dixon, and Lonny Baxter. Terp fans will really enjoy it.

Fear the Turtle!

I never missed a home game in 4 years in the ACC. This book brings back the feeling of a game -- the heat, the noise, the raucous fun. Great stories and quotes from players that I'd never heard before, they open up to tell what they loved about the game and the forum and what drove them to win. A quick read, an excellent gift for any fan of the ACC or college basketball. When Cole Field House goes inactive, it'll be a sad day in Maryland (although a happy one in North Carolina!).

This book is really good for those interested in Sweet Valley. However, you must remember that once you have read this particular book the series must be continued.

Elizabeth spends the money on a cruise and treats the gang on a cruise for all the trouble William caused. Jason Pierson,Danny Wyatt's best friend since 6th grade is going to get married. Nicole is his fiancee,and Tom Watts dated her in high school. Todd Meets Gin-yun Suh,a pretty asian girl. Lila meets Tisiano's brother,Leonardo.Nina meets the ship's doctor,and falls in love with him. something about pickpockets.Denise and Winston get marooned. Elizabeth,Danny and Isabella catch Tom with Nicole.

LIZ SHOULD JUST HAVE SEX WITH TOM AND STOP WORRYING SO MUCH ABOUT JESSICA. SOMETIMES I JUST WISH THAT LIZ WILL DIE, BUT THEN THE BOOKS WON'T BE EXICTING BECAUSE LIZ IS ALWAYS LIKE HAVING 2 B-FRIENDS. JESSICA IS ALRIGHT ,BUT HER BOYFRIENDS ARE ALWAYS DYING.

The book was alomost perfect. The only part I don't like is the fact that it takes so long for them to finally get on the cruise. I think Elizabeth should get her mind of Jessica and stop being so overprotective of her...she CAN take care of herself, and sh's more...experienced. Anyway, instead of worrying about Jessica, Liz should just go ahead and sleep with Tom! Actually, I kind of hoped that Tom would go with someone else and Liz could go with Todd... But Todd met a girl... And Bruce and Lila are really a hit, until the end of the book... Danny is drivin' Izzy crazy with his ethics... Jason and Nicole are getting married, but it turns out Nicole and Tom used to go out together! Bryan is being a bore... A doctor's hitting on Nina... Winston is drivin' Bryan crazy... And Denise and Win are together and better than ever...
