Girls Rock!Review Date: 2002-01-05
This book begins with most likely the most famous woman ruler of them all, Cleopatra. Blessed with riches from the beginning, this girl had all the makings to become a woman who would rock the world, and she did. She faced incredible responsible at the age of only 18 when she was crowned Queen of the Egyptian Empire. Ruling her empire was a difficult task when she was thought of as inferior, for being a women to other male rulers, but that didn't shake her confidence. From the start things went rough for the Queen and she found herself exiled from her own country because advisors felt threatened by her ideas and independence. However, determined, and clever, she devised a plan in order to get into her country to meet Julius Caesar, and the rest is history. The significance of her story is to prove to the world that girls can succeed in a position dominated by men. With the right skill and attitude shown by Cleopatra for her country, any girl can become good at her passion. Cleopatra's heroic courage and willingness to put her life on the line for the sake of her beloved country, is an admirable quality every girl should have.
Unlike Cleopatra, Phillis Wheatley was born at a time when it was unheard of for African-Americans to be anymore than slaves, let alone women. However, Phillis Wheatley decided to change her stars, and follow her love for writing. Writing was a way for Phillis to express her feelings, a privilege that any girl should have. Unfortunately no one would listen or hardly appreciate the poetry of a black girl, no matter how good it was. But knowledge is power and as Phillis advanced in her studies, she gained respect. Her life proved that even a black girl could be an intelligent and an educated person if given the opportunity. She opened new doors for the rights of African-Americans and took society a step closer to accepting her race. She taught the world to look past superficial things like skin color and take a deeper look into what the person has to say. It takes a lot of courage to do this at a time when the slavery issue was so controversial, but Phillis Wheatley dared to be different and never gave up on her dreams. Her patriotic spirit but unwillingness to accept the injustice she was forced to live among made her one of the most respected heroines in our society and an excellent role model for girls to follow.
Left blind and deaf when she was still a baby, no one could have guessed Helen Keller would become one of the most important advocates for the disabled of her time. Although very intellectually bright Helen was never given the chance to learn because it was the common idea that disabled people were not worthwhile to educate. Finally a teacher decided to take a chance on her and suddenly concepts started to make sense to Helen. She became a rapid learner up to where she could read, write, and speak as well as anyone. The rest of Helen's life dedicated on trying to break down the barriers of education discrimination and to change the way people thought of the "disabled". Girls who have disabilities can relate to Helen's story. The significance of Helen Keller's life is that she not only had to overcome a huge disability herself, but then went on to help others overcome the same obstacles so they could have equal opportunities. She fought her battle by educating and spreading awareness to others, so disabled people wouldn't have to face the discrimination she had. She rocked the world by speaking out and was devoted to her life's goal no matter how impossible it may have seemed. Helen devoted her life to help others so they wouldn't have to go through was she did. All these characteristics make her a heroine in everyone's eyes, including the disabled.
All the women in this book possess very admirable characteristics that allowed them to follow their dreams against all odds. Along their journeys they encountered obstacles that only girls could take on. It takes courage and spirit to attempt what they did, and even more strength to succeed at it. But they believed in themselves which took them far and made them heroines who undoubtedly rocked the world. As the young orator Anna Dickinson said, "The world belongs to those who take it", these girls did, and so will the girls of today after they read this book!

The Conte crayon kingReview Date: 2004-01-21
Examples of Ward's comic art, shown in several color covers (Love Diary, Love Confessions, Love Scandals, Heart Throbs, Flaming Love and Torchy) clearly show how good a draughtsman he was but the clean-up of the market in the early fifties meant he had to find another publications to work for. Abe Goodman's Humorama titles solved the problem. These were cheaply-printed digest size magazines full of bad jokes, cheesecake photos and girlie cartoons. The author Alex Chun says Ward produced thirty cartoons a month for Humorama titles and over twenty-fives years probably drew an amazing 9,000 pin-ups.
Ward's Humorama art was probably the only reason anyone bought these tacky publications. Because he had to produce so much work quickly he developed his own unique style of using Conte crayon to draw pin-ups. This had the advantage of showing tonal quality almost like an airbrush and when the originals (up to eighteen by twenty-four inches) were reduced to the digest size pages they looked impressively slick.
There are 117 whole page Ward pin-ups, all from his Humorama period, in this book. The majority are printed in four-color sepia with white highlights (the front of the book has an essay and examples of his early comic and color pin-up work) and the sexually suggestive, exaggerated females with their black stockings, filmy negligees, skin-tight dresses, coiffure hair and impossibly high stilettos leap of the page. If you are interested in this little corner of American male pop culture I doubt there will be a better book of Bill Ward's voluptuous art.

BEST BOOK EVER!!Review Date: 2006-08-30
love this book. It helps you deal with problems of
self-esteem and gives you reassurance about yourself.
Whenever you are feeling a little down, you just have
to remember that you have to feel good inside, first,
to have your confidence shine through your outside. It
also has soooo many helpful hints that you couldn't
get elsewhere. Joanna knows what she is talking about and
gives a great flair of her "how-to-do"s instead of
just boring steps. The fantastic layouts and colors in
the book add a sassiness that is essential to make me
actually look at the book and pick it up in the first
place. I also love the fact that they use "normal"
girls, we can all get so caught up in the idea of
thinking we cant look like the "it" stars, but with
the help of this book you actually can. This book is
just fantastic, nothing can top GLAMOUR GURLZ.

An excellent introduction to the Bible for young peopleReview Date: 1999-08-08
I believe that the editors have made a mistake in targeting this Bible for ages 2-4. This edition is suitable for children up to age 6 or 7. Our 6 year old granddaughter loves this little book and I am sure she will continue to use it through 1st Grade.
I highly recommend this beautiful little book.
You can start much earlier than age 2. Great beginner BibleReview Date: 2003-08-25
We read the stories to her in their entirety and then summed it up in one sentence like, "Jacob had a dream." or "Sarah had a baby." By the time she was 18 months old, she could repeat those sentences back and give us small details like what the dream was about ("angels"). She could also identify every character by their picture by then. This is a great Bible for very young children and if you use it wisely, you can establish a hunger for God's Word early. Our daughter is now 4 1/2 and still loves Bible stories more than any others, which I believe started with this Bible when she was an infant.

Good Girls Do and so does Leto . . . again!Review Date: 2000-05-21
Delightful, Sexy - Great Summer Reading!Review Date: 2000-05-27
I LOVED this book! I'd never read one of Ms. Leto's stories, but I intend to correct that oversight. She has drawn very likeable, sympathetic characters to whom I was drawn immediately. Her dialogue is true and snappy. And the 'thunderstorm' love scene is guaranteed to leave your pulse pounding. [It was my favorite in the whole book].
This is a great book to tuck into your beach tote this summer. If you think it's steamy at the beach, just wait until you read Good Girls Do!
Entertaining romantic rompReview Date: 2000-04-27
Noah always wanted Miranda, but she seemed aloof and remote to him. Instead, he chased after various skirts, but made it clear that he had no intention of forming any lasting relationships. He apologizes for his role in degrading Miranda albeit even if he had no idea what her sister was going to do. However, Miranda decides to teach Noah a lesson even as she decides to earnestly win the CISS award, but soon the duo begins to educate each other on the meaning of love.
GOOD GIRLS DO is a humorous romantic romp that will please fans that enjoy a campus love story. The tale is fun, breezy, yet provides a deep message on safe sex practices without preaching. The lead couple is a delightful pair and the secondary cast augments the novel with a feel of college life. Julie Elizabeth Leto is a talented author who owes her audience Teri's tale.
Leto's shines and her characters burnReview Date: 2003-01-09
Is there anyone who can get you into trouble more than a sister? That is the premise of Good Girls Do. At the University in Southern Florida (sorry, Julie did not use New Orleans again for she give such a texture to her works with that as a background!) Dr. Miranda Carpenter's sister pushed the CISS - Campus Institute for Safe Sex and Dr. Noah Yeager into nominating Miranda as woman of the year role model. Teri makes sure the papers pick up on it, and next thing Miranda is label "practically a virgin" - and as the late Robert Mitchum would tell you, there's nothing worse than a semi-virgin!!
Miranda is humiliated by this all, and Noah understands this, and had no idea Teri would shout it everywhere. Added to Miranda's humiliation is an attraction to Noah, but she has started away from the Party Animal that was known for his one night stands and love them and leave them attitude. Noah has been attracted to her for some time, but stayed his distance because he has had two bad relationships, one which ended in divorce.
However, Miranda is just ticked enough to take out her anger and frustration on Noah by winding up his clock and then teaching him a lesson as she decided to go after and win the CISS virtuous award.
As with all Leto's work, the banter is rapier sharp, warm and light, yet this story still manages to get the safe sex message worked in there.
Now, WE NEED Teri's Tale, Julie!!!

A gourd-geous taleReview Date: 2007-03-25
The parallel stories of her struggle to live life to the fullest, both in her life and her life's work, are portrayed with honesty, humor, and sadness. You travel these twin journeys with her and her life partner Janice Lymburner and find yourself laughing with them as they learn the ropes of hoeing and gourd gathering and running a business as such delightful greenhorns, who are open to the lessons and generousity of their neighbors, friends, and some wacky strangers who all seem to become lifelong partners in the gourd life, as they call it. She also shares the sheer joy of life with her true love and the pain and fear of years in the closet.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It inspires and instructs and makes human the whole public debate on gay marriage and rights. It is a beautiful book.
Strongly recommended reading for anyone who aspire to have a business of their own one dayReview Date: 2006-05-04
