Join Maximum Boy in Maximum Girl Unmasked, where his obnoxious sister Tiffany uncovers her secret identity. In this book the President of the United States calls Maximum Boy and says "Max I'm feeling a little strange today". What will happen to the President? Will he be okay? Find out! Read Maximum Girl Unmasked. If that isn't bad enough, when Max's older sister Tiffany (who's also a superhero) wins the high jump in gym and jumps 21 feet, she almost uncovers her secret identity. I strongly recommend this book (especially if you don't like to read). It's exciting and funny and full of adventure.

I love Joanna Trollope's books. She's perceptive and literate. I think her understanding of children in complex families is very well portrayed. My only quarrel with this book is that she let Mark off the hook. Kate's relationship with those in the shelter, especially Helen, should have led to real action instead of the acceptance we saw. Is shelter the only way to help victims of violence? I think not. I hated that part of the book!
Give this book to a friend.

I greatly anticipate each new Joanna Trollope novel that comes out, and this one did not disappoint. I re-read it for the third time recently.

I don't always like Joanna's characters. Some I can't stand. But I get so caught up in their lives, I honestly feel as though I know these people. She has a talent for drawing you in, without you being aware of it. Ups and downs of daily lives, menial and/or dramatic things we all experience. She has a talent of making it all so interesting. Of making her reader care for even those characters that aren't very lovable. And each character is so uniquely different, Joanna does not rely on cliches or tired character development. No two characters in any of her books are alike.

My advice is to be sure you have plenty of time when picking this book up. You won't want to put it back down until you're finished. I can say that about all of her books.

I read this book years ago, but it's one of those that lingers. Trollope knows the human heart and it comes through in this tale about lonely people who form a bond and a home together. I became a Trollope fan after this, but Men and the Girls remains my favorite J. Trollope novel.

This is the most beautiful childrens' book! It is a true story, I have been very fortunate to meet this pilot, Gail Halvorsen. This is a wonderful way for children to read about an important piece of history that had a lasting impact on not only a city but the millions of people saved by a great act of kindness. This particular event should not be lost, but kept alive. I highly recommend this book to children of all ages! Beautifully illustrated!

We had the pleasure of meeting the legendary Col. Halverson and Mercedes during one of his visits to Berlin this year. We invited the beloved Chocolate Pilot to speak to a small group of American Scouts and organized a book reading beforehand. Word got out and over 350 people showed up to hear this story! The audience was mesmerized. Everyone, both parents and children alike, were touched by the story of human kindness. Margot Theis Raven does a wonderful job recounting the true story of Mercedes, a seven year old German girl, who dreams of receiving a little happiness, in the form of candy, in postwar Berlin and of a kind American pilot who makes her dream come true. This beautifully illustrated book honors both Col. Halverson and Mercedes. My children absolutely love this book. And so do I! It's a true family keepsake.

Some years ago, I "dragged" my wife and son to meet the Candy Bomber when he came through town. He gave a really nice speech in which he told the story of Mercedes. Amazingly, I had finally found a pilot who hit a sweet note with them. A year or two later, they even went to meet him again, and my son caught candy he dropped at the airport. Well, when the book came out, my wife latched onto it in an instant. She was so taken with the book and the retelling of the story of Mercedes, that she has incorporated it into her class room. Super nice man and touching story. The author did a splendid job that does both justice. You'll enjoy this one!

A lovely story of a little-known episode in post-World War II Europe, the Berlin Airlift, and the American pilot who knew that for children, chocolates and sweets were almost more important than the basic supplies the Airlift was providing the citizens of West Berlin, so he sent those along with the rest of his cargo, and in doing so, gave them hope.

Margot Theis Raven movingly depicts an important time in history and the gallantry and heart of the man who `rained down sweets' on a city that needed it. A wonderful read with fascinating historical information that kids and adults will enjoy.

Bravo, Ms. Raven!

I think that "Meri Strikes Back" was a great novel for fun reading. It's witty, fast-paced, and is a definite page turner. It leaves you at the end wishing that the next book "Dark Cindy" was already released, so that you could continue the tale of Cindy Bixby and Alpha Beta Delta...

I didn't think it was possible to top Hazing Meri Sugarman but M. Apostolina has done it. This latest offering of teen debauchery, Meri Strikes Back, has the reader engaged from start to finish. The heroine, Cindy Bixby, goes up against arch enemy Meri once again while at the same time searching for her own authentic self. This book gets into more detail with Cindy's cohorts, my particular favorites are Lindsey and the vulgar yet lovable Bud Finger ( hasn't everyone dated a Bud Finger at least once?!). The action was nonstop and I could not put the book down. As I finished each chapter, I was giddy with excitement wondering what awful predicament Cindy would find herself in; on pins and needles as I waited for Meri's deliciously torrid next move. The only thing this book left me wanting is more, more, more! Can't wait for the next installment, Dark Cindy.....Will the tables be completely turned on Meri once and for all? Will CIndy finally find a solution for that "tragic hair?" Will the journey for CIndy's authentic self take a deep, dark turn??????
I look forward to going on more adventures with Cindy and the gang at Rumson U.

Just when poor beleaguered Cindy Bixby thinks it's safe to go back to her college sorority, after vanquishing uber-_itch Meri Sugarman in Apostolina's debut Hazing Meri Sugarman, Meri rises in Martha Stewart-like phoenix fashion to return to Rumson U. What devilish plans does Meri have for Cindy this time and how will Cindy fend her off? Readers absolutely do not have to read the books in order, since each stands alone, but it is fun to do it that way. As for this reader, I can't wait for more adventures with Cindy and the sisters - good and evil - of Alpha Beta Delta.

MERI STRIKES BACK is a continuation of the story introduced in Hazing Meri Sugarman. Meri Sugarman, evil sorority president whose downfall was brought about by Cindy Bixby and her friends, is back. Criminal charges against her amounted to nothing but a few hours of community service to be done. This time around, Cindy is being set up so that her sorority sisters will think she's the crazy one, instead of psychopath Meri.

Meri's not alone this time, either. Even though her old vice-president, Gloria, is in prison, Meri has gotten the help of some evil Catholic schoolgirls--miniature Meri Sugarmans. With their help, Meri's plan is working. Everyone sees Meri as the victim, and Cindy as the crazy girl who just won't forgive poor, apologetic Meri Sugarman. Only Cindy knows the truth, and she's got to convince her friends, the Dean of the college, and the rest of Alpha Beta Delta that Meri's just as dangerous as she ever was.

Readers of Hazing Meri Sugarman will love its sequel! It might be even more hilarious than book number one. The great characters are back as well. The only reason this book might not live up to the very high expectations set by the first book is the ending. MERI STRIKES BACK ends in a way that is very obviously setting it up for a continuation. Cindy's last diary entry hardly wraps up any loose ends, and even creates several more questions. Certainly, I'm glad there will be another story, but it would be nice if each book was also a story in itself, not just a continuation of one long story. Hazing Meri Sugarman stands on its own very well, but this novel, unfortunately, does not.

Still, though, it's a great read that is not to be missed! It's not entirely necessary to have read Hazing Meri Sugarman first, though it is recommended (certainly don't read that one after reading this one; there are a lot of spoilers). MERI STRIKES BACK is a fairly quick read that will have readers anxious for the next book about Meri and Cindy, Dark Cindy.

Nancy Drew
The Message in the Haunted Mansion
By: Carolyn Keene

This review was written by Marilyn (age 9) of Stockbridge Central School
Imagine this: A fire happened while you are gone; a window crashed almost on top of you and a lot of other accidents happened
in the same house as you are staying in. Well that's exactly what happened to Nancy Drew in an old mansion in San Francisco on California Street. Nancy and her friends Bess and George are trying to solve the mystery. I liked this book because it is a mystery. There are accidents they can't explain. I also liked this book because it is a ghost story. They think there is a ghost in the mansion! One other thing that happens is they think there is gold in the mansion. I loved this book! I recommend it to kids (and adults!) who like mysteries and suspense.

Review Date: 2005-02-06
Nancy Drew discovers another mystery when she, with friends Bess, George, and her housekeeper Hannah, help Rose Green and her niece Abby renovate an old Victorian mansion so they can turn it into a Bed and Breakfast. This book takes place in San Francisco, in current times. As the renovating begins, "accidents" that don't seem to be accidental, begin.

There's a legend about the house that it was once the hotel of the famous actress, Lizzie Applegate, who married the famous bandit El Diablo. She wrote a play called "The Bandit's Treasure". When Nancy, Bess, and George are fixing the house, they find some old documents proving that it was Lizzie's hotel, and she was the wife of El Diablo. A song in the play "The Bandit's Treasure" also suggests that maybe the bandit's real treasure is hidden inside the house.

Meanwhile, the renovations aren't going well. Someone is trying to stop them from succeeding, and wants them to abandon the project. The "ghost" of Lizzie Applegate keeps appearing. A window breaks with no reason. The chandelier chain is cut, and it falls and shatters. A fire is started inside the house. Nancy falls through the roof trying to fix something, and Nancy, Bess, and George receive a message saying "Leave the mansion at once!" A bathroom floods and ruins the downstairs wallpaper. Food from the kitchen keeps disappearing. A car tries to run over Nancy and George while out on a jog.

The house contains all kinds of surprises including two-way mirrors. Bess finds an old key hidden in a bedpost. Nancy, Bess, and George find various hidden rooms throughout the old hotel. One room contains a trunk that has to be opened with the key they found. It holds Lizzie's will, her diary, and the once-hotel house plans.

But who could be causing all this to happen? There are many suspects. Abby, Rose's niece, might be behind it all. Or what about Charlie, who is helping around the house, but also drives the same kind of car that tried to hit George and Nancy? Louis is helping also, but seems to be hiding something. Cassandra, Charlie's daughter, is being mysterious, and what about the blond teenager who keeps hanging around the mansion?

They find the blond teenager, named Tim, who's been taking food from the kitchen and living inside a secret room because he has no other home. Tim helps them look for more strange happenings.

The song in "The Bandit's Treasure" leads Nancy to the treasure under the floorboards where the fireplace used to stand. But Charlie and Louis try to stop them from taking the gold. They have been causing the "accidents" all along. With the help of Tim and the police, they land Charlie and Louis in jail and save the mansion.

I would recommend this book to any readers interested in mystery fiction. If you enjoy being a detective and solving mysteries, this is the book for you.

Nancy has done it again!!!

Sallie March, 11 year old spunky, tomboy and her older ladylike sister Maude live with Aunt Ruthie until their Aunt has the misfortune to be accidentally shot dead by the notorious Joe Harden.

The two girls are taken in by Reverend Peasley and his wife, who immediately put the girls to work running the household while they take it easy. Maude, on whom falls the brunt of the work and being courted by an elderly gentleman, decides it is time to take her's and Sallie's fortune into their own hands and brave the wilds of the frontier in search of their last living relative, Uncle Arlen.

But Maude and Sally soon find that losing their Aunt Ruthie is only the beginning of their problems as they ride out of Cedar Rapids and into the kind of trouble Sallie has only read about in her beloved dime novels.

Told by Sallie as she tries to set the record straight and punctuated by the erroneous newspaper reports of "Mad Maude and her gang", this rollicking Wild West adventure story will leave you begging for more.

Ms. Katz and Tush is an excellent choice for educators and parents to use when explaining diversity.
In the book, a young boy is introduced to an elderly jewish woman through his mother. The boy develops a bond with the elderly lady, and the two are friends forever.
This book enables children to develop an understanding about life in different cultures. It shows them that different is good and you can learn a lot from someone of a different culture.

A wonderful story, even if the illos have some bloopers...

This is the story of a loving friendship between an elderly Jewish lady from Poland named Mrs. Katz, and an African-American child named Larnel. Mrs. Katz lives alone in her apartment and doesn't have anyone to visit her. (It's not stated in the book, but, since this appears to be a predominantly African-American inner city neighborhood, one wonders if she was left behind by the Jewish community when the more affluent members moved to the suburbs? In real life it has happened...) Larnel's mother stops by to visit her every other day or so, and brings Larnel with her.

One day, Larnel gets the idea to give Mrs. Katz a kitten from the litter that was born in the basement of his apartment building. (Get the pun -- Katz/cats? Actually, the name "Katz" has nothing to do with "cats," but it's cute anyway.) Mrs. Katz names the kitten Tush, which is Yiddish for "bottom," because it has no tail. Larnel agrees to help her care for Tush, and from this sharing, a lifelong friendship grows.

The story is well-written, the characters are well-developed and "real." The illustrations are vibrant, beautifully done, and ethnically accurate. Well, almost. There are a couple Jewish bloopers. For one thing, the menorah sitting by Mrs. Katz's window only has seven branches. A Hanukkah menorah has nine -- eight for the eight days plus an extra for the "servant" candle. The seven-branched menorah mentioned in the Bible was specifically for the Jerusalem Temple, and is not usually found in the home. Since Hanukkah was mentioned in the story, I have to assume that this was supposed to be a Hanukkah menorah.

The second blooper is the scene in the bakery. Mrs. Katz is shopping for PASSOVER -- a time when no leaven is to be found anywhere in a Jewish home. It is not just a matter of eating matzoh. The entire house is cleaned of anything even resembling leaven, and even owning leavened products is forbidden. That being the case, why is she shopping for her Passover feast in a bakery, of all places? She is clearly pointing at a cake or some rolls, and these would NOT be served on Passover! So nu, maybe she's a Reform Jew and not so strict? But in that case, why is that very Hasidic-looking gentleman in the corner shopping there? Surely HE would not serve bread for Passover! (...)

These are relatively minor quibbles, given the overall good quality of the book. But when it comes to children's books, I insist on total accuracy with regard to Judaism, because these are the images that will stick in the mind for years to come. Granted, this is not a "Jewish" book per se, it's a multicultural book -- which is all the more reason to pay more attention to the Jewish details, lest the reader(s) be misled. For the bloopers I'm docking it a star, but it's still a great story and I highly recommend it to both Jews and gentiles.

What struck me about the Mystery of the Tolling Bell was its setting-- coastal New England! (Maine, maybe?) such a mystery would delight a Maine-iac like me! Also, it turned out that there WAS a tie-in between that mysterious cave and the
case that Mr. Drew sought to solve for Mrs. Chantrey. It was in this cave where the phonie cosmetic business was in operation. When, after boating accident, Nancy climbed to top of cliff to get her bearings, she felt weak and dizzy and went to sleep. In her dream, two elves carried her away and put them down. The elves were in fact part of the racket, Grumper (who did the chemical work) and his cousin Franz. So, this dream helped Nancy solve the case and bring the swindlers to justice (as she was able to identify two of the crooks). The ringleader, Harry Tyrox,
had a dozen ailases, like Monsieur Pappier, Mr. James et al. So did Mary Smith, the apparent front woman, who called herself Madame, Spanish Senora etc. Like all of the original Nancy Drews, this one is throwback to when many things we take for granted did not exist: there were no computers, transistor radios, dial phones, DVD's, audio CD's, or television (NOT EVEN MUNTZ TV's!) All in all, a very nice one.

This book is pretty good

This book actually deserves 3 1/2 stars. This is probably my favorite Nancy Drew book but they're not as good as the Annette books.
If you're going to read a Nancy Drew, read this one, but if you want a good mystery, try the Annette books which are better.

This was the eighth book I read, and possibly the best! When Nancy goes on vacation she ends up in a mystery. Her father isn't there yet so she goes out looking for him. She also is sloving the case of the tolling bell which tolls right before water comes rushing out. Aperson dies and a ghost has been seen the end is for you to find out.

Friendship Can Make New Moons Shine

Sometimes I forget how wonderful friendship is. Being a young girl, I love my friends very much. I cherish and enjoy the time I spend with them. Friends can help you dance to your own rhythm, help your flower bloom, help your dreams come true. New Moon's new book about friendship, definitely supported these feelings of mine. There will never be anyone more wonderful than the people we love, and those people are our friends. I think what made this book so wonderful for me was how inspirational friendship was expressed within its pages. The poems and stories made me realize how our friends can be inspirations for our writings, for our art. Friends not only illustrate feelings, they let our feelings blossom. I am so happy to read this book, because from reading it, I know someone is supporting my feelings.

two thumbs up!

This book was written by girls just like you. It will make you laugh, smile and even cry. But most of all it will give you a wonderful sense of self confidence and help you reach out and make friends. I highly reccomend it, that is, if you want to be sure of yourself in friendships, self confident and happy with your friends. I give it a big smile and two thumbs up!

A heartfelt book dealing with issues about girls in sports

I'm a girl editor for this book. I feel that there is not enough writing out there by girls for girls. This book is just that:by girls and for girls. I feel that girls and sports mix wonderfully. They let you free to jump, kick and just be you. They let your spirit free. You don't have to worry about getting dirty(not that you have to worry anyway) and you can let passion fly. This should be known by all girls. All girls should know the adrenaline rush in jumping into a pool or surfing or kicking a ball to a teammate. This book shows you, you can go out there and get the rush of feeling strong and being part of something bigger than just you. This book shows you girls and women who are great athletes or just girls who enjoy sports. It gives you some advice on how to get started in a sport and helps you find your particular sport made just for you. I know that I have put my heart into this book for all girlkind and hope I have opened girls eyes to the wonderful opportunities they have in sports and how they can take hold of those opportunities and fly. This book is only one in a series of books written by me and seven other girls as a source for girls and their dreams. We want girls to know that they can pursue anything they want. If you have an opportunity, take it. If you have a passion, follow it. Please, disregard my rating and rate it for yourself.

This book is fantastic, it needed to be written.

Girls thrive, learn, question and speak through their friendships. From secrets to shyness and boys as friends, New Moon's Friendship book, created by girls themselves, is a robust account of the essence of relationships penned by the voices of girls for their fond readers. I facilitate conferences and workshops for young women all over the country and have researched many successful methods to support healthy self-concept in girls. Girls are impassioned and curious about their relationships with other girls and are anxious to read and talk about shared experiences. They often become confused about competition, anger, trust and loyalty among their peers. These fun girl pages, filled with interviews, stories and advice, are springboards for discussions and connections with parents, educators, advocates and all kinds of adolescent girls. An essential for girls and girl-advocates!

As a mom of an 11-year-old, I look for books which are supportive of friendships, against cliques, and supportive of maintaining individuality and integrity despite peer pressure. This book does it all.

Very interesting mystery

This is the first Molly Blume mystery I've read, and I really enjoyed it -- enough that I will probably go back and read the earlier ones, to find out how Molly got to where she is. As an Orthodox Jew, I'm impressed with the accuracy and understatement of Ms. Krich's depiction of modern Orthodox Jews -- it's so accurate, without painting the lifestyle as the source of all ills or the source of all happiness as a lot of other writers try to do.

I'm also looking forward to the next book. There are some hints in this one of Molly's possible infertility, and I really hope the author delves into that -- having her deal with fertility issues and treatments rather than just providing a miraculous baby. It's such an important topic, especially within the Orthodox world. I would love to see how Molly deals with it.

Probably one of Rochelle Krich's best.

Molly Blume, the imperfect heroine, sounds an important wake-up call

Krich hits her best stride ever in dissecting the intricate relationships that exist between teacher and student, mentor and protege, and lovesick, confused teens. Molly Blume comes through again as her imperfect, human self gets personally involved in helping a HS senior save herself from a series of bad decisions.

The Orthodox Jewish world should take extra note of this important book that analyzes, albiet fictionally, the challenges facing the majority of teens today, in varying levels and consequences. There is also a veiled indictment of the tunnel vision that exists among many adults and educators that "its not happening in my backyard".

Kudos to Rochelle for taking on a difficult topic with grace, and with a great plot twist at the end.

I just LOVE all of Ms. Krich's novels! I am in the middle of "Speak No Evil" (been up since 4:30 a.m.!) because I just HAVE know... "who done it?!"

I have enjoyed all of Ms. Krich's novels and am waiting with baited breath for her next one.

A CONTROLLED, FINELY NUANCED READING
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-23

Voice performer Deanna Hurst delivers a controlled, finely nuanced reading of Rochelle Krich's fourth episode in the adventures and misadventures of writer Molly Blume. As many know, Blume's Orthodox Jewish faith is very much a part of her life - Krich describes this beautifully and Hurst reads these passages with dignity and respect. Further, it's a bit of a dual performance for Hurst as the story revolves around a missing girl, Hadassah, and Hurst imbues this character's lines with guilelessness and gullibility.

Finding the missing Hadassah is not a job Blume sought, but she feels she owes a friend a favor. Seems the girl may have run off with someone she met on an Internet chat room, but the plot becomes murky with murder when the man in question is found dead. Surely the ingenuous Hadassah couldn't have committed such a crime....or could she?

Takes an expert voice performer to inhabit the voices of two rather disparate characters convincingly, but Hurst carries it off.

Listen and enjoy!
