Mary Slessor is a real heroine. The book is a comprehensive and inspiring account of her life. I will look for more biographies of Christians from this publisher.

I highly recommend this book. It gives an in-depth, historical view of the Scots/English struggle for supremacy in Scotland's politics. I found the portions dealing with appeals to the Pope and the documents used to bolster the arguments particularly fascinating. I hope this text comes out in paperback to make it more affordable.

At the heart of this charming story lies a meditation on the uncanny power and beauty and mystery of music. The watercolor illustrations are quite lovely and fit in smoothly with the mood of the tale. It took me just five minutes to read, but I immediately wanted everyone I know to read it, too. (Makes a great gift for your favorite church musician!)

Mystery, ancient magic, loneliness, loosing a loved one.

The Maze Stone has been a favourite book of mine since I was quite young. It is a memerable story, one that no person can ever forget, and which will take the imagination to different levels. Fanny is a a girl who has been heartbroken by the recent loss of her grandmother, who has raised her since her mothers death. She is to now live with her father, step-mother, and step-sister Heather in a new housing estate. Because of her sadness and unfamiliarity of her surroundings, Fanny withdraws into herself, rejecting her new family, and spends most of her time alone on top of the big hill that shadows their house. It is a mysterious hill that contains the ruins of an ancient stone circle. Her new house was once part of of much bigger house that contained a mystery that was lost through the ages, until now. A young man dissapeared in that house many years ago, as Fanny soon found out at a display at the local library. And it was uncanny how similar his picture looked to the new English teacher at school that Heather had a crush on. After finding a strange round stone with a maze design on while digging in the garden, Fanny decides, for some strange reason, to hide it away in her room. But during the next few weeks the design seems to pop up everywhere; on a stone on top of the hill, on one of the old stones in her fireplace, and even on a pendant worn by the strange new English teacher. The book becomes more and more exciting with every new mystery that Fanny uncovers, and the ending is by no means predictable with Fanny and Heather facing off with the most evil beings imaginable, and finally forgetting their differences and becoming true sisters. I would recommend this book to any child or teenager that has an imagination that likes to wander, or who has had hardships moving to a new area. Gemma Smith, Wichita Kansas, Mizogg@aol.com

A Cousin's Perspective

I first read Elijah (Jay) McIntyre's ancestry a few years ago and was inspired by Ms. Fisher to pursuit my own ancestry research. I found "The Family Tree of Elijah Jackson McIntyre" to be a must-read for anyone related to him or his immediate ascension. What impressed me the most was the completeness of the family tree and the amazing head-start it was able to provide me in my own search. I was especially touched by the transcribed letter from Jay's brother at the end of the book ... wow!

It's taken me the last few years to firm up my own opinion of the early MacIntyres, and I think Ms. Fisher could have used some of the background available in Martin MacIntyre's "The History of Clan MacIntyre" to add to the beginning of her book. I felt like her introduction, which includes the Ancient MacIntyre History, could have used a little more explanation like that illustrated in Martin MacIntyre's text. Also, the book ended rather abruptly and left off without really elaborating on Jay's children.

Regardless of the criticisms listed above, this book is really wonderful and I am extremely grateful to have been honored with a copy.

I really like this small tome. It is well written with very good illustrations and gives a thorough account of the medieval castles around the Isle of Skye.

After the first (1990) edition went out of print, I've searched far and wide for my own copy. I even traveled to Skye but was unsuccessful in finding a copy for sale. So I was thrilled when this 2007 edition came out.

I recommend it for anyone with an interest in Scottish castles and history.

all the songs i've been searching for

i have collections of the corries, the tannahill weavers, silly wizard, and, oh yes, a scotch-irish mother, so i know almost all of the songs in this book already.

which is fine when i'm singing a capella. not so fine if there's a pianist or guitarist in the offing.

these are NOT arrangements--thank goodness. the words and melodies are here, with chord progressions marked, so a guitarist or pianist who's worth the name can supply an accompaniment.

even with my other books of scottish songs, there is almost no overlap. and, oh joy oh rapture, it has jeannie robertson's 'son david.'

first rate selection--can't understand why it's oop. if you sing scottish, you need this book.

I bought this book not necessarily to learn Scottish music but because it provides the best "quick start" to playing reels, jigs, and traditional music in DADGAD and Open G tuning (I keep my OM in DADGAD and my slope shouldered 12-fretter in Open G).
While browsing through a large selection of books on Celtic music in DADGAD at a sheet music shop, I happened upon this one by Rob MacKillop and immediately purchased it. This shop had about ten books in the "Celtic" section and this was by far the best one. The first section is on technique, second section is songs in Open G, while the third section is on DADGAD. Lot of songs to learn. Highly recommended!

A personal look into the past

Elizabeth Grant of Rothiemurchus' biographical volumes offer a very personal look into the past of Scotland (in the first book). Her account of her family's lives and what Scotland was like in the early 19th century would be fascinating to anyone interested in that country or interested in the lives of women of that era. In some ways she seems very contemporary and in other ways she seems very far removed from life today. But her memoirs offer a unique view of how life was lived that long ago and in a place so remote from the mainstream. I found the first book totally enthralling and look forward to reading the other volumes of her later life, after she married an Anglo-Irish landowner and moved to Ireland, and her later travels.
