My name is Jack and I am a 7 year old first grader. This book is the first Jigsaw Jones mystery I have read. The mystery solver's nickname is Jigsaw. His nickname is Jigsaw because he solves mysteries like puzzles. I like the book because the mystery is cool. I like it that the kids are about the same age as me. These books are good for active readers.

Mellow introduces the reader to a person and a period of time that makes the book a vacation from our modern world. He introduces us to personalities of the nineteenth and early twentieth century who remain names to most of us. How delightful to attend the parties, hear the gossip, and take part in pre-World War I Paris, with this astonishing woman and her friends whose literature and paintings are recognized the world over.

nice story, very descriptively written. It's about the people of Cloone, Ireland back in 1925. It's a true window into a bygonne age, written by one of Ireland famous Kerry writers, Bryan MacMahon.

The book is happy and upbeat, and shows the happiness people in Ireland have and had. instead of the dreary versions put forth by McCourt, et al. It shows that happiness is found in everyday occurrences of life. The stories within it touch on many aspects of Irish life that I wanted to learn more about. Everything from thatched roof country villages, irish language, church, tinkers, american wakes, fish, the countryside, cattle, food, traditions, sports, life after independence in 1925, love, mating rituals of that time, clothes, transportation, relationships between the generations, proverbs and sayings, irish wit, description of musical instruments, and much more.

PS read it with a dictionary nearby. MacMahon's command of English vocabulary is impressive. You can learn many new words.

Excellent textbook on general knowledge of C.O.s in WWII

While many of the statistical facts are outdated and many have surely been revised since the book was published in 1952, this textbook has an excellent general account of Conscientious Objectors (C.O.) in World War II. It covers the broad range of their stance (be it religious or social or political), how they were treated during deliberation of their C.O. status, as well as many other topics. An excellent resource for research papers, as I'm finding.

As a side note, as Amazon.com's information is slightly inaccurate, the book was authored by both Mulford Q. Sibley and Philip E. Jacob. Including the Appendix and Index, it is 580 pages long.

I picked this book up for a dollar at a sidewalk sale in Philadelphia. I don't know why I bought it - I should be throwing books out. Nevertheless, I just finshed it. The writing is solid. The action is good. I never figured out what was going to happen; the plot was relatively complicated. It draws some interesting contrasts between people who are men of action,e.g., people who have been in combat, and people who shuffle paper: here insurance claims people. Additionally, there is a lot of local color having to do with rural Scotland. The action centers around a salmon fishing stream; and people seem to spend more time IN the stream than fishing. The best part of the book is its murkiness which comes through in the descriptions of the landscape, streams, old buildings and characters. The final chapter could have been cut in half - we don't need to have everything spelled out with a diagram anymore; I guess that was the style of the day. Otherwise, this book is better written (or, perhaps, edited) than most of the genre that I have read.

I bought this book, along with some others, for my 2nd grader this past winter. It is more basic than others of the same sort, and is probably geared towards the younger child, rather than an older. That being said it's perfectly acceptable, and was useful to us in it's limited way, and a good price too.

But a nice book, easy to read.

I really enjoyed reading this book with my class for information about tornadoes and hurricanes. The book presents many facts about these storms in a very kid friendly way. the format for the book is questions and answers. The book provides just enough information to keep it interesting for student readers. The pictures are not real, but are realistic. I like how the authors write a note in the beginning of the story inviting the reader to read their book. This book will be appealing for students in the upper elementary grades. It is a good beginning book for research.

Elizabeth Taylor, an actress and sex symbol who is one of the most sought-after celebrities by the media, has published several books during her lifetime. Elizabeth Takes Off: On Weight Gain, Weight Loss, Self-image & Self-esteem is one of them. I first picked up this book because of the words "self-image & self-esteem" in the title, rather than the "weight gain, weight loss" portion. Well, it turns out the book would be an excellent source for those who want to lose weight, but that was not what I was interested in.

Nevertheless, the book itself is highly commendable. Even if you're not planning to go on a diet - like me - the first half of the book is still worth a read. Miss Taylor writes briefly and frankly about events that occurred in her life which affected her self image and consequently, self esteem. She writes how being a senator's wife caused her to divulge into a period of extreme inactivity and boredom which unconsciously turned her to overeating. She also mentions the dire effects of binging, nibbling, or grapple-snapping. Unlike those strictly diet-focused books, Elizabeth Takes Off offers insightful explanations and reasons for weight gain while also presenting a dietary method which to me looks superb.

If the first half analyzes the impact of events in Miss Taylor's life, the latter half offers diet menus, recipes and exercises that could help keep your body in shape. The Taylor-made recipes mainly consist of nutritious food, notably fruits and vegetables that have low calories. Her daily menus seem reasonable, diverse and easily followable because it is not a starving course, but a replacement for your typical diet. The exercise portion contains several beneficial stretches which, again, are also simple and effective.

Overall, I found this book to be a smooth, easy read. I also found myself nodding to many of the things that Miss Taylor says in this excellent book - which needs to be more in circulation today.
