Activist talk

Let me put a reservation on this little review and say that I am particularly interested in those chapters that treat the subject of journalism, while I have only skimmed through the rest of the book. Kofi Buenor Hadjor has for many years practiced journalism in various settings, both as a reporter, as a journalism teacher (Tanzania School of Journalism) and not the least as the editor of New African. His approach to journalism is controversial because it is an activist and liberation approach which he calls 'committed black journalism'. However, this type of journalism must be understood against the political context of the liberation times of Ghana and other African countries from the 1960s and onwards. Towards this backdrop, Hadjor's book represents an interesting and thought-provoking comment on the journalism profession in African contexts. I can recommend the book as a path to understanding the pre-conditions for the emergence of the independent African media.

Good overview of this famous formation

Kenneth Macksey was one of Britain's foremost military historians in the latter half of the 20th Century. He typically wasn't the best writer, but he was excellent when it came to things like details: dates, times, numbers, etc., and he also did a good job with the course of a battle or campaign. He understood the things that faced a commander on a battlefield (having been one himself) and he dealt intelligently with the challenges that they faced.

This current book is part of the legendary Ballantine War Series. These were inexpensive, short books with lots of photos that described various aspects of warfare. At first, everything dealt only with World War II, but later they decided to expand things to other conflicts, though they never got far beyond a few books on Viet Nam and World War I, as far as I know. The books were divided up by category: battles, campaigns, weapons, leaders. This is the first of the campaign books, covering the life and death of the formation popularly known as the "Afrika Korps."

The formation is always linked with Erwin Rommel, the unit's commander pretty much throughout its history. The author doesn't go into detail covering the commander much, though, merely discussing his career in World War II prior to the North African desert in one sentence, and only briefly mentioning that he had served in World War I against the Italians. He also spends little time discussing the various formation changes and modifications that the Germans made with the two Panzer Divisions that served as the backbone of the Afrika Korps over most of the life of the unit. Instead, the bulk of this book discusses the battles the unit fought in, and their accomplishments.

This is a good, short overview of the Afrika Korps and its campaigns. The unit has many admirers, and it should, being the only sizable German formation from World War II not accused at some point of serious war crimes. The book is slightly hampered by when it was written. In 1968, the British breaking the Enigma code wasn't known yet. As a result, the author has alternate explanations for what we now know were the products of Ultra: Montgomery uses deduction to guess when Rommel will attack at El Alamein, and guesses what's going to happen at Mareth and Wadi Akarit. Of course in all of these instances, there was no dispute in the Allied camp, because Montgomery was given the German radio intercepts, and knew what the plan was as soon as Berlin did.

I enjoyed this book. It's not the most detailed in the world, but it has good photos and a well-written, if concise, text. I would recommend it, as I probably would all of these Ballantine books.

Review of Almgren's big regularity paper

The publication of the Tex formatted version of Almgren's famous big regularity paper makes the original three-volume, 1700 page paper much easier to read. Especially, since Almgren developed the whole new machinery, it takes time for the beginning readers to become familiar with the terminology and to consult essential materials in the Appendix. Readers who have suffered reading the original three hand typed ``telephone books'' will appreciate this all-in-one book.

As in the title of the book, the paper provides a method to deal with the regularity problem of mass minimizing surfaces in higher codimension. This paper not only gives the optimal upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of the singular sets, but also provides a possible approach to understand the structure of the singular sets of mass minimizing surfaces. This deep but famous paper contains several ingredients to be understood and explored. It is worthwhile for people who are interested in geometric measure theory to spend some time on reading it.

This book gives clear and precise instructions on how to use the 'power' of personal magnetism. With the teachings in this book, such things as influence, telepathy, and suggestion can be made to serve the user of. In terms of occult books in the west, this book--and just about all the other books from the same publisher--Yoga Publication Society are excellent in giving clear instructions without the usual obscure veils meant to illude the inexperienced reader.

I was entertained and educated with this book and never considered napping to be an art until now. Napping is something we must give ourselves permission to do and to cultivate the habit. With short stories and quotes, along with relaxing pictures, it's an easy read.
As a speaker on child development, I often talk about the value of sleep for a child's mental acuity, development, and behavior. However, now I have a book to recommend to parents so they get their allotment of restorative sleep as well.

A contemporary intellectual reads the New Testament
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-20
A friend suggested that I read this book because it dealt with the problem of how to regard the New Testament as a book one reads. We respect it, but we have to read it as we read any other book. Hence, the title. I have not sat down to read or study the New Testament in almost thirty years because it came with too much baggage: respect for authority, accept but do not evaluate, revere but do not question. What Beeching does is to apply all the modes of contemporay critical reading plus exceptional knowledge of biblical analysis to make one feel comfortable with this important book. I was fascinated to be invited to see the places where things do not fit together, where things do not work out, to discover that certain passages were addressed to political situations in the first century and have to be read that way. I also appreciated his sensitivity to the historical consequences of the New Testament's treatment of Jews. The result is that I am now re-reading the New Testament and am feeling free study it as I study other books. I wish that I had been taught to read it this way years ago. By approaching it as Beeching suggests, I can appreciate it better. Beeching has enriched my life, and I am grateful to him for doing so.

Good, realistic view of casino gambling for the uninitiated.

Very good, easy read that clearly and concisely explains the basics of the various casino games. I found it very useful as it is filled not with just facts, but advice that is meant to keep you out of harms way, which is after all exactly where the casinos would like you to be. For less than the price of your first bet, it's an easier decision than whether to place your bet on the pass or don't pass line

BLACKFACE by Q. B. Wells is a story about life on the mean streets of Chicago for an unpopular teen. Black is a fat, somewhat clumsy, dark skinned child who feels unloved - especially by his mother, who is something of a disciplinarian. He feels that she loves Roy Mayor, the white child to whom she is a nanny, better than she loves him because she listens to Roy's whining and complaining when she won't tolerate it from him. He is also upset at the darkness of his skin and feels that if he were lighter, he would be better loved. In one scene, we see Black scrubbing his face with steel wool and rinsing it in Clorox to lighten his skin. Finally, in a moment of rebellion against his mother, Black runs away to the streets and meets up with his friends who also have their own issues. Face is a foster child who longs for a family; Penny's mother is a drug addict he feels he must protect and Zero, who also has a stern father, stutters and longs to fit in with the crowd. All four of these young men need money and they need it right now. What will they do to get it?

Q. B. Wells's novel is a heart-wrenching picture of what life for a black teen can be on the harsh, unforgiving streets of an urban ghetto where money is everything and drugs are on every corner. It is a coming of age story where Black must decide if he is going to take the high road or the low road. Is he going to listen to his mother or his friends? Other than some editing issues that jolt the smoothness of the book, it is a captivating read. Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. I would recommend it for anyone who loves a good story.

Giroux presents a well reasoned argument about the nature of what knowledge of the poet's life is available from the sonnets. It is both informative and pleasing to read.
