What a refreshing perspectiveReview Date: 2008-04-15
Thanks for multiple persectivesReview Date: 2008-05-13
Where was this book 7 years ago? I am an RN who is the Grandparent of an 8 year old Grandson with Autism. I worked in a Pediatric Neurologist office. I saw the classic signs of problems with my Grandchild when he was 9 months old. I needed the ability to share with my daughter my concerns. Dr. Sanders is able to give clear concise information to the Professional, suggest anticipatory guidance of concerns to parents, and speak as a parent (often emotional). This book is a comforting assistance to those of us who have worked with children diagnosed with autism (ASD). Parents need to know that empathic and caring professionals who have walked in their shoes can give rational logical guidance of care for their child with ASD. I hope more parents will read and use many of his recommendations. Thank you for writing a book based on science (intellect) with a loving parental perspective (emotion).
Finally, a compassionate, concise voice for ASD!Review Date: 2008-03-03
This book is written with compassion. It gives the perspective of both a first-rate clinician and a parent of a child with autism.
I was both impressed and moved by Dr. Sanders' insight and expertise.

I.Q. wiggles his way into readers' hearts, and the book's illustrations delightfully document the goings-on of a classroom throughout the seasons.

This is a wonderful book for several reasons.Review Date: 1999-12-28
In particular, its proofs are rather clear, concise, and meaningful. There are only a couple points where Gouvea uses trickery (a la Rudin) to prove things, and he is honest enough to warn before they come. Indeed, the footnotes are quite entertaining, especially for one who has read enough math books to catch his jokes. Overall, the read is casual. It is good for independent reading.
The problems in the book are also worthy of praise. They are interspersed after proofs and in the middle of exposition, as ways to make sure the reader is following. Indeed, they are always pertinent and carefully planned. In addition, they point out ways in which mathematics authors often skip over details which the reader should actually verify for him/herself. Specifically, they perpare a student for reading graduate-level texts (which are notoriously full of this occurrence). Pedagogically, therefore, this is a very important tool, and useful book for a budding math student.
Finally, for the graduate student who wants to go down the path of p-adics, Gouvea does a good job of pointing the reader in the several different directions the literature can guide him/her. He gives references to other texts, giving just a taste of their contents, throughout. His eye towards further study is keen.
I must point out again that it is a joyful and entertaining read, in addition to being an exposition of a deeply fascinating (and deeply odd) area of math. This book, because of its clarity, its organization, its promotion of good mathematical reading skills, and its wonderful style occupies a spot on the very exclusive shelf of highest-quality texts in mathematics.

Still the best introduction to sociology text.Review Date: 1999-10-19
Why do I like this book so much? Well, let's face it, most textbooks are dull and laborious to read. Robertson's SOCIOLOGY is actually a pleasure to read. It has fascinating details which keep the reader's interest, is easy to understand, and above all, the writing is so good that reading this book is enjoyable. Above all, Robertson is able to accomplish this without sacrificing intellectual rigor.
If it has a weakness, it is a little old now and some of the material is obviously out of date. However, despite it's 1987 publication date, most of this book is still relevant. Many texts try too hard to stay current, only to include issues and examples that quickly become "old hat" (Monican Lewinsky, O.J. Simpson, etc). But Robertson's text is a classic, and still worthy of a serious look both by professors and the general public.

It can be difficult as a parent to find out what signs to look for in your child if you suspect things aren't quite right in his or her development. It can be even harder to figure out where to go for help and what questions to ask when you do go for help when you think your child might have asd.
Dr. Sanders is a rare resource for parents and families who have someone who is diagnosed with asd or someone who might have asd. He speaks not just as a doctor but also as a parent of a child with asd.
He raises the same questions many parents raise, and he provides both concrete information and guidance on how to navigate the waters of diagnosis, treatment options, advocating for your child in a school setting, and finding ways to help you help your child to lead a life connected to his or her community. He lets you as a parent have a sense of what to expect as your child grows older.
We are fortunate that Dr. Sanders has taken the time to write his findings and share his wisdom with the rest of us.
