I don't need to summarize b/c of course the all powerful Scott "Pope El Siglerino" has done a beautiful job in an earlier review. So, what I would like to get across is that this book, this series of crime novel is what makes my day do-able. I am, like many, an unfortunate desk jockey (gotta' pay the bills b!$tch) and the only way I can do my work is with some quality story telling, which is exactly what this is. Characters that pull you in, they spawn emotion responses as the story goes, I love the good guys, I love the bad guys, I love this book!! Reading this book is so easy b/c the writing is so ridiculously descriptive that my imagination can instantly produce the mental movie I always can see as i read/listen. Great book, read the sequels and pray for a continuation of this story...

Seth Harwood introduces us to the world of JACK PALMS in his first novel, Jack Wakes Up. Jack, a one-hit movie wonder finds himself in a world of crime and drugs after a close friend turns up dead after a deal gone bad. Who's responsible for the death, and can Jack actually trust the policeman investigating the case after finding out that he was the one who helped destroy Jack's career.

A definite must read.

I could not put this book down! Jack Palms is richly drawn. You feel for this man and sense his world, like you do when reading Chandler or Cain. But Jack is contemporary, young, and fun, and his story is fast-paced and full of action and surprises. Whether it's the girls and the goons, or the dealers and the Ducati, Harwood lovingly describes everyone and everything that is keeping Jack up past his bed time. Don't let this book slip by if you love a good noir or crime story or are just addicted to the action. Jack Wakes Up will keep you up even after the last page.

What a great book. What a great writer.

Jack Gets 5 Stars???
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-11
I read this a few months ago and somehow wound up on the page again this morning. I saw that this book had gotten five stars from over 50 reviewers and the only other ratings are two four star reviews. That bothered me just enough that I felt like I'd better weigh-in for the sake of balance. C'mon guys, this was a great book and tons of fun, but on my meter a book has to be really special to hit five stars. Scott Sigler, the author of "Infected", and who pens the first review here, awards it five stars which is very kind of him and I know he is supporting a talented fellow podcast author. Yet Sigler's book "Infected" just blows away this book. Of course, it blows away most books. "Infected" is one of the most exciting and stunning novels I've read in years and if you haven't read it yet then don't waste any more time getting yourself a copy.

While "Jack Wakes Up" is a great book, I can't honestly place it on the same level as "Infected". Therefore I give the former four stars, maybe even 4.5 stars, and the latter five. Neither book is literature, but that's not what they are trying to do. They aspire to be edge of your seat entertainment and they both succeed. They're fun, enjoyable, exciting, packed with action, put a grin on your face, and are stories that will stick with you long after you finish the book. Maybe we just need more than five stars to work with so we can have more subtle gradations of quality and enjoyment. OK, that nitpicking over with, hey, please believe me when I say "Jack Wakes Up" is an extremely fun book and is done very well. If your a fan of action books in the Lee Child vein you're are definitely going to like this book. I bought it on a whim from Amazon based upon some good reviews, which it deserves, and was thoroughly happy with it.

Jack himself is a very well done character. A cast aside action adventure actor, wrecked by an ugly and publicly-messy divorce, down on his luck and short of dough, he let's a somewhat sleazy friend get him tangled up with some Czech guys looking to score some drugs. In the midst of the deal Jack finds his friend murdered in his house. Jack wants to stay away from the cops but also needs to make sure he isn't in danger too. The story hurtles forward from there with a cast of drug-dealers, cops, ex-KGB rogues, strippers and pissed off Colombians. Harwood writes well and doesn't fall prey to cliches, making his characters intelligent and believable. I enjoyed this book start to finish, admired the three-dimensional characters, and loved it that the plot refused to be drawn into stereotypes or any type of predictability. Harwood always happily surprised me as the story unfolded because people acted rationally except for when excellent reasons were provided for irrational behaviour. In other words his characters act in a self-beneficial manner except for when angry, stressed, or under the influence of hubris. Harwood does a great job of keeping things wildly fun but within the realm of possibility. The story was slightly more predictable than chaos theory, In other words, not very predictable at all. There was plenty of great action in this book, but it too was reasonably believable with the good guys getting their butts kicked as often as the other way round. If Seth Harwood publishes more books you can bet that I'll buy them. I'll also add another recommendation: if you enjoy this story, and you've already read "Infected", I'd suggest looking up Charlie Huston's "Caught Stealing" trilogy next. Those are great books in the same vein as this one.

This book was exactly what I was looking for. It not only has great recipes in it but also explains the whys of baking. Want to know WHY you don't stir muffins or brownies too much? Want to know WHY your bread dough sometimes doesn't rise right? This book has it all. A great read along with the recipes. Plus, it was $10 cheaper through Amazon than from King Arthur itself.

An amazing must have for the serious baker!

Review Date: 2008-07-30
I received this book as a gift this past Christmas, and it is by far the most-used cookbook I own. I have a special penchant for baking, but am only still learning (before this cookbook, I'd only ever really baked cookies).

I can say, then, that this cookbook is excellent for the learning baker. This is the book I used to learn to bake bread (like their delicious and easy Vermont Maple Honey Bread, and the much more complex but oh-so-worth-it Crostini with Basil, Chevre, and Sundried Tomato), and bagels, and the Simple but Perfect Pancake.

The only possible criticism I can muster is that sometimes I cut down a little on the salt and sugar (I don't like things very sweet), but I think with every cookbook you have to learn the writer's taste so you can adjust them to yours.

I LOVE to bake, and I love that just about anything I could want is contained in this book -- along with extremely detailed commentary so that you understand what you're doing, instead of just following directions.

It's those very clear directions, interesting facts, and the indispensable elaboration on specific ingredients in the back of the book that make this a book from which you learn not just recipes but actually how to bake.

So good job, King Arthur Flour -- I'm incredibly grateful I received this book!

My mother bought me this book when I was a little girl (about 6 or 7). At the time I was learning to play the violin, but absolutely hated it. I tried in various ways to tell my parents this...even going as far as to tell my mom when she was pregnant that what I really wanted was a cello. None of my requests to switch instruments were heard until one day my grandmother happened to look inside this book. There is a page which asks you what your favorite instrument is. I of course had scribbled out the violin and circled the cello. Well, with the help of this book, and my grandmother, I finally had my wish come true, and started on the cello. I have been a cello teacher now for 19 years, and when I saw this book, (I was looking for a book for my own children), I remembered what a difference it made in my life. I also remember the book being a lot of fun to do as a kid, and I still have it!

Stunningly beautiful cookbook

Review Date: 2008-08-26
I have to admit, this may not be the most practical cookbook out there. It does feature some tough-to-find ingredients (such as "barberries," "Persian lime powder", etc.), and there are a lot of kebab type recipes that call for grilling - not the most practical for a busy weeknight cook. Some of the recipes here will require a commitment of time. However, that said, there are also many recipes here that are not too complicated, and a lot of very unique and exciting dishes: truly a culinary adventure. The "Khoresh" chapter is especially exciting to me - one pot meals that use exciting flavor combinations like dried or fresh fruits with meat and vegetables, reminiscent of the Moroccan tagine. If you're on a budget, there are also several ground-meat and egg dishes here, which are easy on the wallet. This book includes a huge number of recipes, all courses and with meat, poultry, fish, and protein-rich vegetarian options. The photographs are the most amazing I have ever seen in a cookbook. This is a very high quality book, and worth the bit more it may cost than other cookbooks. If you are interested in exotic flavor combinations and either willing to skip the ones with hard-to-find ingredients or track them down on the internet, this book will bring you much pleasure to both browse through and cook from.

If you can get the ingredients--and these days there are Arab/Persian food stores in most cities--you will not go wrong with this book. It's totally authentic food, cooked the way they cook at home in Iran. Persian food, if you happen not to have tried it, is unusual--pomegranates, compotes of greens, meat and fruits in same dish, pistachios, saffron and rose water --but always delicious and kind to the stomach. Beautifully set out, clear instructions, mouth-watering photos. Highly recommended both as cookbook and as guide to a vital part of Persian culture (they take their cuisine very seriously, and rightly so!)

This book is written by the same author of "Persian Cooking for a Healthy Kitchen", and shares with this one the simple way in description of different recipes. This book has a more wide content of dishes, a chapter devoted to ceremonies and a lot of pictures, many with food and many devoted to Persian culture. It is not generally known that Persian Cooking was and is rather modern, previewing rules for a balanced diet, there are foods hot and cold and they cannot be mixed indifferently. It is a world to discover and this book gives a good help.

Insightful for understanding autism & other human primate thinking processes

Review Date: 2008-06-22
A very readable & enjoyable book. I especially enjoyed the chapter on autism & the origin of language. Fritjof Capra's book "Hidden Connections" referenced this informative & amusing text including the link between brain function involved with hand gesture, signing, & tongue movements that unexpectedly led to the promotion the uptake of speech in autistic.
There are many insights into the shared psychology of humans & other primates. Despite the physiological and genetic similarities of all primates that have made chimps attractive model organisms for research,it was interesting to read about the reluctance of biological scientists to accept the anthropomorphic traits of chimps. There can be little room for a claim to "value-free" objectivity by biomedical researchers who can apparently dismiss the psychological effects of enforced confinement & sensory deprivation, on the effectiveness of anti-viral medications, or a range of other pharmaceuticals. The author has shown considerable bravery & commitment to expanding this area of learning, despite the threats against his personal career by people with vested interests in ignoring or denying the contradictions to their implicit or explicit values.

At age 62, I still look for writers who will change and deepen my sense of our human nature and our place in the natural world. More than writers about religion per se, I think these writers are able to help us advance our moral and spiritual understanding and reconcile our human/animal natures. For some years I've been reading Goodall and others on primates, but Next of Kin was, for me, a pinnacle illumination. Even if you aren't interested in these types of questions, I think this book will move you deeply. If you ARE interested, may I also suggest the recent Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets.Take Me With You When You Go

the chimps touched my heart

Review Date: 2007-02-25
Although this book was written some time ago, it is exceptionally timely because the relevance of chimp behavior to our own continues to unfold. The devotion the author invests in his charges and the passion he feels about the atrocities visited on chimps both in the laboratory and in the wild drive his story. This abuse is reinforced by the backward and ignorant thinking that stems from bible thumpers who fear the truth about evolution and man's close relationship to apes. Roger Fouts and his wife have provided an invaluable service to our understanding of chimps, and their research related to sign language is truly stunning. They have succeeded in accomplishing their observation and reporting against considerable odds. All these aspects, and the Fouts' fully rounded examination of their subjects make for a gripping and emotional tale well told.

"Next of Kin: My Conversations with Chimpanzees" is one of the most amazing, heartbreaking, and inspirational books I've ever read. The book is written by Roger Fouts, a primatologist who devoted his life to studying the language patterns of chimpanzees. While in graduate school, Roger was introduced to Washoe, a precocious young chimp who became fluent in American Sign Language. Eventually "Project Washoe" expanded to include many chimpanzees, all who learned to communicate with humans using ASL and demonstrated unique personalities, complex emotions, and astounding intelligence.

I've always been a big animal lover, but reading this book taught me so many things that I never knew before. Anyone who questions an animal's ability to think or feel will get a sharp reality check after reading this book. Chimpanzees are people, too, just as much as human beings are. Unfortunately, the majority if humans in this world don't agree with that logic, and thousands of animals, including chimpanzees, are routinely kidnapped from their natural habitats and bred in captivity for the sole purpose of participating in biomedical research. In many cases, medical laboratories house animals in appalling conditions and literally torture them to death. "Next of Kin" details the horrors that go on behind closed doors at biomedical laboratories, and chronicles the steps Fouts and other animal activists have taken to protect chimpanzees from being treated inhumanely.

I absolutely loved this book. Reading it made me feel close to Washoe and her chimpanzee friends, even though I never met any of them before. (Sadly, Washoe passed away last fall at the age of 42, but I hope to visit members of her family at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute in Washington someday.) Parts of this book are incredibly depressing and difficult to read, but hopefully learning about the terrible ways animals are treated will inspire people to take action. I admire everything that Fouts, his family, and his colleagues have done to protect chimpanzees, who are our next of kin on the great evolutionary scale. I hope other readers get as much out of this book as I did.

Modern nutrition research is a mess. As a scientist who's interested in health research, I find the field to be amazingly full of bias and unscientific thinking. It's driven more by popular consensus than logic.

"Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" slices through modern nutrition BS with devastatingly simple logic: Price found the healthiest cultures in the world, and recorded what they were doing. It's as simple as that.

For those who are concerned with the credibility of the book, I'll mention that it's very consistent with what anthropologists and field physicians were saying at the time. Price also published some of his findings in respected peer-reviewed journals like JAMA and JADA during his lifetime. His genius was in consolidating information from many different cultures and examining what they had in common. Modern Western food habits have left a trail of destruction throughout the world, and it was painfully obvious to anyone observing a transition from traditional foods to industrially processed Western foods.

Price and other groups of researchers have shown that modern degenerative disease is caused by a modern diet, yet mainstream nutrition research continues to fumble around in the dark. These days, researchers conduct studies that compare the sick to the sicker and confuse correlation with causation. This information then gets conveyed to us by a media that is completely unscientific and more concerned with creating a big story than conveying sound information. Leave them all in the dust and learn how to be truly healthy by reading the most important and most overlooked piece of health research ever published.

I purchased this book as a gift for my friend.
It was shipped promptly, and I was able to give it to her as I intended.
The book provides a signficant amount of useful information regarding the impact of eating habits, the impact of food processing relevant to what is eaten, and the impact upon the human body that is incurred as a result of eating various processed and unprocessed foods. Although the author is a dentist and much of the perspective of the book provides information regarding how components of the mouth are affected, there is a great deal of information provided regarding foods, nutrition, and patterns.

Would it be crass say this book is the answer to new couples wanting to conceive and raise children who will grow up to have straight teeth, model beautiful cheekbones and manly square jaws? ;)

I fear that is the only way we can get past our current culture obsessed with lowfat oversugared fake food.

This book changed my life and the life of my son. In a time where vegetables-lowfat-tofu eating dietary principles are held up as the answer to health we are eating beef liver and cod liver oil, pastured meat and eggs, wild seafoods and raw grassfed milk, butter and cream, bone broths, soaked grains and nuts and fermented vegetables to try to achieve the 10x the RDA of fat soluble vitamins and 5x the RDA of minerals and water soluble vitamins that protected people around the globe from disease and enabled them to achieve their full genetic potential (ie. the wide palates, model cheekbones and manly square jaws!)

I already know the 3 years following the principles in this book and the WAP Foundation has helped my son as his palate his widened and tooth spacing increased from age 2 to age 5. I'm excited to see if his secondary teeth will come in straight and avoid braces like I had!

Price was a DDS who was the head of research for the ADA of his day... someone very learned with the scientific method. His ten years of travelling the globe has given us most vital information on a natural human diet and how this relates to health and the growth of a child most especially.

I constantly look around me everyday and see the result of modern processed food: the weak chins, narrow palates, crowded teeth, narrow nostrils, "deviated septums" and underdeveloped faces. This is NOT a results of genetics, is is a result of your diet!! That is mind blowing!! As a relatively new mother, that is life changing to know that I can effect how my child will look by what I feed him.

I especially see the results of physical degeneration in the faces and teeth of my son's generation. Interestingly enough, I rarely see it in my parent's generation! (Both my parents were raised on cod liver oil btw.) This alone has been fascinating to consider and it spurred me on to learn more about how proper nutrition effects our bone structure and our health.

With respect to myself, this book inspired me to get tested for vitamin D deficiency, and supplement with cod liver oil. Learning how much vit. D can effect your immune system and breast cancer risk is only secondary to how good I feel... much less fatigued, happier and more resilient on this diet. I used to be a healthy vegetarian eater, but a traditional diet based on WAPF principles is hands down much better for me.

Thank you Manisha and Sharon. I'm in my 30's, have traveled the world, purchased cars and homes on my own and overall done fairly well, yet I was missing so much knowledge on investing in my future I didn't know where to get the right advice for me. I read this book in two sittings, taking down notes on the type of investment plans that should work better for me and referring to my Quickbook file to see if I was saving the right amount (I wasn't). I love the tone of the book as you share financial knowledge in layman terms without condescending and making reassuring comments for those of us who might have made a couple mistakes along the way. On My Own Two Feet is an inspiring guide for women of all ages to understand and get control of their finances. This book is a joy to read and after reading each section I was eager to implement Thakor and Kedar's ideas immediately for my own personal finances. I ordered Personal Finance for Dummies several years ago and it remains on my book shelf collecting dust. Not so with On My Own Two Feet; it is a guide that I consult and use often. Thakor and Kedar have included many useful tables, examples and summaries. When my younger sister called me the other day wanting to buy a new car; I consulted Thakor and Kedar's table "How much car can you comfortably afford?". It turned out she couldn't afford much, so she decided to keep her current car. I wish this guide had been available when I was fresh out of college; every young woman deserves to give herself the gift of financial freedom and On My Own Two Feet provides a great roadmap to get there.

The absolute best book to teach ANYONE how to manage their finances--and an easy, interesting read, too!

I absolutely LOVED this book. I saw this book in my community library a few months ago, and liked the cover, so I decided to check it out. Little did I know it would change my life! It changed the way I looked at budgeting, and taught me many different things--HOW to save your money, WHERE to save your money, and WHEN to save your money, among other things...and made it all easy to understand. I am 16 years old, and am going to college next year, so this book will be a great help to me, especially in the budgeting area. This book will be a lifetime finance companion for me! =)

A Life-Saving Book

This book has been life-saving to me. I'm from a surface-affluent (actually financially volatile) family, and nobody ever taught me anything about personal finance except to pay bills on time, use credit cards "wisely," and save when I can. It wasn't enough, and I made choices based on perceived (and sometimes actual) needs that put me in a hole I was too embarrassed to talk about and too ignorant to save myself from. When I saw this book last April, I was instantly drawn in by the introduction. The clear, positive, and straightforward advice empowered me. I now have $4000 in savings instead of $4, my credit card debt is down from $14,500 to $8,500, I am saving for a down payment on a house I can comfortably afford, and I am contributing to my employer-sponsored savings plan for retirement. In short, I am on much more solid ground. I can even navigate [...] with reasonable confidence! Every woman should buy this book. Even if you think you know it all, but it: there are true gems here. And if you have never thought much about personal finance, DEFINITELY buy it for yourself and any woman you care about!

Exquisite Writing

Meryl McQueen's use of language is exquisite.

In ONLY SALT REMAINS, she paints a vivid picture of a tiny Italian village. So lyrical is her prose that one can smell the air there, see the houses, hear the sounds. Her understanding of this place seems to be thorough and complete.

McQueen has created an intricate and clever plot which would thwart a lesser author. This story is gripping. The author has a full understanding of the relationship between brothers -- both the affection and the rivalry -- and of the interconnected feelings of extended families.

I look forward to reading a full-length work by Ms. McQueen.

The Mediterranean Sun

As the imaginary makes one feel the warm sun together with the two main characters that stand out as real people, one feels compelled to find out how the plot evolves. Even though the narration is somewhat rough around the edges, the well-developed characters immediately grab one's interest. The setting provides a detailed backdrop that appears natural in all aspects. The speedy introduction of a "mystery" and the brewing "love conflict" make this introduction more reminiscent of a detective thriller, but they sit well in a short excerpt for catching one's attention. There is great potential both in this story and in the author.

Sicily 1935

Review Date: 2008-02-15
In this excerpt Meryl McQueen confidently sets the scene for her novel with graphic, well-researched descriptions of the location (Solunno, Sicily), main characters (orphaned brothers Francesco and Antonio Vigneri) and the harsh realities of daily life working the saltpans of Sicily in the mid 1930's. Much of the storyline is kept hidden but the reader is left with the bare outlines of a double tragedy that orphaned the Vigneri brothers eight years previously as well as hints of underlying tension between the two brothers themselves and also between them and their paternal uncle Mauro and aunt Pia. Circumstances have made life a struggle for the brothers and conservative small village ostracism has left them social outcasts in their community. Many questions surface in the mind of the reader, the answers to which can only come from the complete novel.
The style of writing and the intermittent use of local dialect seem to constantly remind the reader of the novel's Sicilian setting.

Honestly, I was already familiar with every strip in this book; however, these strips never fail to make me laugh, cry, die, laugh again. The book also has the ability to trap souls. I've personally collected many of my friends' souls. Collect them all!

The Perry Bible Fellowship is a hilarious comic available for free on the internet, so why would you pay for a book that you can read on the internet for free?

The answer is because of the book. Perry Bible Fellowship is a kind of comic with art and humor rarely found in other comics. The book itself is high quality, with a very nicely drawn cover and comics not on the site that are definitely worth the price of the book. You can also spread the joy of PBF by putting it on your coffee table and not having to sound like a nerd by telling everyone about "this awesome webcomic that you have to read!"

The title is how I described PBF to someone who hadn't heard of it before.

It's a wonderfully perverse and hilarious comic and this collection is presented very well. The comics have been produced in really nice color and the cover art is awesome. This book is a great way to have an offline copy of the comics you've enjoyed on the web site.

A Real Source of Comfort and Encouragement for Girls

I purchased this book for 12 and 10 year old daughters. I thought that perhaps we could read a prayer each night as a devotion and that it would give us an opportunity to talk about issues in their lives. It has done that and more. My oldest daughter now refers to it frequently, whenever she needs a lift or a little extra encouragement. I also purchased the sequel and I rate it equally well. I have given this book as gifts to my daughter's friends for their 13th birthday, and they have all loved it.

Spiritual Lift

My mom gave me this book a couple of years ago, and I just stuck it in my closet. Recently I was cleaning out my room and uncovered this book. I started reading the prayers inside. I looked for prayers that connected to my everyday life and that I could relate to. I typed up my favorite prayers on my computer, printed it out, and put it by my bed. Every night I read the prayers. One night, I was feeling lonely. I was reading through the prayers and I came across one that went like this:

I need someone to comfort me
To tell me it's okay
To stroke my hair
And kiss my cheek
To hold me tight when I feel weak
To make hurt go away.

I need someone to care for me
Someone who's always there
To take my hand
And wipe my tears
To stand on guard against my fears
To help when life's unfair.

I trust in God's great[...]love [...] for me
When I am all alone
To hear my cry
And fill my heart
With faith that I can do my part
And manage on my own.

I read it over and over, sobbing the whole time. About the fifteenth time, I was reading it and I just stopped. Something happened and I stopped crying. I just read it over again, this time without crying, and laid down in my bed. I felt so much better. I don't know what happened, but something about the prayers made me feel better.

These prayers have changed the way I feel spiritually. They have also given me a greater belief in God. This book provided me with the words I needed to get by. I highly reccommend trying it.

When I first saw this book, I passed it by since I am the mom of two boys. The next time I saw it, I was looking for a gift for a friend with three teenage daughters.(Her copy is well worn and she's buying extra's to give as gifts) Thumbing thru it, I returned to buy a copy for myself. "Dreams on Your Pillow" is inspirirational for any parent of teens and can be applied to boys, also, as they take the journey to manhood.

A great gift for the young lady in your life!

Celia Straus wrote this snappy little book for her daughters, and it shows a mother's love. Each page contains a small "prayer" written for a teenage girl, all of them dealing with courage and becoming (at least that's how a father sees it :-). All of them are written in enchanting verse, though not all of them are necessarily directed towards God. For example, on page 103, there is "I am not helpless/I am not weak/I will not shatter/I will not weep/I stand alone/Yet I stand strong/I can be me/Without being wrong."

Overall, I found this to be a wonderful little book, a great gift for the young lady in your life!

This is a book of poetry for your daughter's inner self.

I just bought this book for my daughter as a graduation present and she and I have both already read all the poems in it. Now it stays on her pillow! I don't know why these simple poems connect so instantly to the soul, but they seem to touch a cord inside. My daughter, who is 12, has thanked me more for this book than anything I have given her in years. For any girl who is going through an identity crisis, this book is a great help.
