I really found this book to be a vauable source of in formation about Van Gogh. So much can be learned about an artist through studying his sketches and drawings. Its a very beautiful book and a perfect addition to an art enthusiast's collection. This book offered much more than the traditioal Van Gogh collections. Unlike the majority of Van Gogh books, it offered more than reprints of only his most famous works.

I just finished this excellent biography this afternoon. After reading Stone's Lust for Life, I was curious to read a regular biography about Van Gogh. This is not exactly a "regular" biography, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. Meier-Graefe blurs the line between historical fiction and biographical nonfiction. The result is really fantastic. I felt like I got a sense of Van Gogh's tortured soul, his complex relationships (with his brother, with Gauguin..), and how it all worked together to create his art.

Vincent Van Gogh only painted for ten years of his life but his paintings are still compelling to modern audiences. This biography of the painter is directed to ages 10 and older and provides a discussion of not only his works, but why he went mad and why he cut off his ear. Letters from Vincent to his brother and patron explore his behaviors and thinking.

Magnificent

This is a magnificent, indispensable book. It includes all the self-portraits, photographs of Van Gogh as a child and a young man, portraits of Van Gogh by other artists, Van Gogh's portraits of his family, a chronology, and a few pages of impressions by people who knew Van Gogh.
Paging through the portraits can only be described as a devastating experience. The mad genius, on his way to hospitalization, self-mutilation and suicide, drawn to the self-portrait in the interest of self-knowledge and perhaps self-therapy, shown in all his avatars. Some of the pictures are so beautiful they take your breath away. Others are so frightening you wouldn't want them on your wall. But they are all haunting, all unforgettable.
Amazon says Courage Books, but my two copies say Running Press, Philadelphia. Printed in England. The reproductions are small, but you get the idea, with a vengeance.
My copies were bought at a discount, but the book is worth every penny of the list price. I would have paid $100 for it.
Not to be missed.

Visiting Van Gogh is not only a great book for kids to simply flip through and look at the pictures, but also for adults and educators. It is written with such imagery that kids and adults alike feel they actually hear the floor creek in "The Bedroom" and can touch the paints he uses. It also gives a short history of Van Gogh and highlights several of his most impressive paintings. This is not only a book to be used at home, but also in the classroom. I am pursuing an elementary education degree and I plan on using this book in the classroom for it can be used very easily to generate an early interest in art. I give this book a thumbs up!

Solov'ev in renewed Contexts

Vladimir Solov'ev: Reconciler and Polemicist by International Vladimir Solov'ev Conference, William Peter Van Den Bercken, Manon De Courten, Evert Van Der Zweerde (Peeters) Vladimir Solov'ëv (1853-1900) is regarded as the most original and systematic of the Russian philosophers in the 19th century. Ηe has once again become the subject of international scholarly attention both in Slavic countries and the West. This volume contains selected papers pre¬sented at the international conference on Vladimir Solov'ëv held at Nijmegen University, The Netherlands, in September 1998. The scope of this conference was wide-ranging, dealing with theological, metaphysical, philosophical and historical themes.
Though SοΙον'ëv's broad intellectual activity defies any strict attempt at categorisation, the editors have classified its major themes under the dual characteristic of reconciliation and polemics. Solov'ëv was pas¬sionately committed to the reconciliation of all beings under the idea of all-unity, which he attempted to achieve by engaging in uncompromis¬ing polemics with his contemporaries.
The thirty contributors to this volume are specialists from Russia, ,Ukraine, Bulgaria, Western Europe and the United States. The volume makes a significant contribution to the intellectual reassessment of Vladimir Solov'ëv since the rediscovery of his philosophical heritage in his own homeland in the late 1980s.

Loved this booklet! It really made our time in Mumbai less of a mystery. Many travel guides recommend so many things to do that one can get discouraged when under time constraints. This book has a great "what to do in 24 hours" section that seems like the must do's while you are in a place. Also, the nightlife and restaurant recommendations were amazing! I will definitly get one of these for my next destination.

Review Date: 1999-06-29
This is not just another book about the occupation of Holland, Evert Hartman tells a story about a young boy who's father is with the NSB, a dutch nazi collaborators party. The boy is indoctrinated and believes in the nazi-ideals. Hartman tells the reader in a very realistic way how this boys live is in occupated Holland, how all the children in school hate and bully him, how he enjoys the nazi party rally end how tough it is for him to understand his difficult father. But slowly things start to change and the boy realises that the nazi's may be wrong. His whole world gets turned upside down and a dramatic climax concludes this amazing story. If you want to know what happened between 1940 and 1945 from both sides read this book. It is a anti-war and anti-nazism book but still it makes you understand how it all was for somebody that actually bought the nazi nonsense.

Rembrandt van Rijn, a favorite artist of the Dutch school, was very young when he began studying to be a painter. He was 'on his own' by age 23 after only six months with a successful painter-instructor. It wasn't long before he was sought-out and moved to Amsterdam, a more convenient location for the many portrait commissions he accepted. Rembrandt never traveled very far from Leiden where he was born in July 15, 1606. Try to imagine - - tulips were not introduced to Holland until his lifetime! The flower had a tumultuous history of its own (read "TULIPOMANIA" >> isbn # 060980765x << & similar titles) - - fortunately tulips were NOT banned as an invasive plant. There is one beautifully shown in the floral "crown" worn by "Flora" - a painting now hanging in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia. It demonstrates Rembrandt's delicate brush strokes and use of his palette.

Light and dark always played a primary "role" in van Rijn's works. The contrast, called by an Italian word >chiaroscuro< is often used when describing Rembrandt's painting style. The artist was famous for this use of light & dark to show contrast; he avoided symmetry, 'toyed with' perspective - -and the paintings included in this book serve to illustrate these important characteristics of his art.

Rembrandt often chose topics to paint that reflected his interest in married love, and in Biblical stories. In the latter, Dutch people were painted in familiar, not Palestinian, settings. The painting of the Mennonite preacher and his wife was new to me, and of particular interest. The author tells us that "the Bible dominates one half of the (entire)canvas." Anatomy lessons were another traditional subject for large canvases at that time. These were called "memento mori" - - Individuals in such group paintings often paid to be included.

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art inaugurated this series of books for young readers and it was an inspired project. The author sheds true light on the art without condescending to readers. There is something encouraging about the author's tone as he instructs us about the many artist 'tricks' that were used & now aid our understanding & appreciation of the Rembrandt's mastery. Muhlberger also points out how changes in personality can be detected in self-portraits done at different stages of Rembrandt's life. These self-portraits involved the complicated positioning of two mirrors.

Thank you, Rembrandt van Rijn, for your works that have enriched lives through the centuries. And mcHaiku adds sincerest thanks to Richard Muhlberger, who compiled and edited this excellent & very readable book for young people (and fortunate others).
