Invaluable Guide for New Netherland Records!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-20
In this book, Gwen F. Epperson has provided researchers of 17th Century New Netherland (present day New York) with an invaluable learning tool. Mrs. Epperson shares her familiarty with available records, her experience in using European records, and her knowledge of how and where one might determine the place of origin of a New Netherland family. Mrs. Epperson explains what New Netherland records exist in the Family History Library and how any researcher can use these resources effectively . She also clearly lists records , such as the microfilmed Amsterdam church records (in Dutch), which she believes can be tackled by researchers whose only language is English. With her guidance those who have been afraid to venture into the realm of non-English records can feel more confident about beginning. Every genealogist with a family line in New Netherland will want to consult Mrs. Epperson's small, but valuable guide.

A short concise overview on the Dutch and how they settled New Amsterdam. Every word the author uses is well chosen, and paints a clear picture of how the Dutch acted in America. I would recommentd this concise work to all who want a good overview of the beginnings of New Amsterdam, i.e. New York.

I really like the format of this travel guide-- it's geared toward the type of vacation you're looking for (hip, classic, etc) and gives specific recommendations for each vacation type. The information provided in the recommendations really helps to give a feel of the place, not just hours and location.

Still an Age of Discoveries, a rare gem found: Japonicae Pars
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-25
This is a gem of a book for many reasons. It tells, in a brilliant way, the story how Shogun's Anjin san (the pilot Will Adams) came to Japan. It expands on the terrible dangers of crossing from Europe to the East and focuses on the men who dared this. Its introduction gives a splendid overview of the age of discoveries. Finally the book itself gives one the idea to be in the possession of a very well preserved 16th century book: the yellowish paper, the way it is cut, the illustrations and maps, all adds to the feeling of the story told.
The author is very erudite and has the unique capacity to make complex history a novel.

History Made Alive : a delightful read
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-06
This is history as it ought to be told: with exhaustive, detailed research, telling the known facts with a bright freshness and presenting fascinating new information and links, Hendrick Hooft has been able to credibly portray the enormous importance of the Dutch democratic movement. It is one of the ignored moments of history that nevertheless created our world: these young democrats, who preceded the French in pressing for a popular voice in government (and achieved it entirely bloodlessly), and were a source of intellectual inspiration for the American Founding Fathers. Hooft writes anecdotally, interspersing historical fact with lightfooted and elegant fiction. Truly a delightful read as well as being an important historical document. A definite recommendation.

ANOTHER LOST GEM
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-04
Published in the early 1950s this is a novel of the survival of a group of children caught in the Dutch Floods of 1953. Is is a true story of survival. A fictional account this may be, but the research is great and the writing quite realistic. This is Hartog's third novel published in this country and is probably the best of the lot. It takes a few pages to get into the flow of the author's syntax but it is well worth the effort. This is one of those books that has been out of publication for awhile which is a pity as folks are missing quite a good read.
