The best Shakespeare Works You Can Find
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 27 total.

The Complete Illustrated Shakespeare, edition of 1979, edited by Howard Staunton, and containing over 800 magnificently beautiful steel engraving illustrations by Sir John Gilbert and Ray Abel, is treasure which belongs in the library of any true lover of the bard. The physical size alone, 8 3/4" x 11 1/4" x 3", is impressive, with every play preceded by a short historical introduction, and followed by several pages of illustrative comments and diverse critical opinions.

This book is worth a high price and a long wait.

This scarcely passes for Shakespeare

The are numerous excellent modern editions of Shakespeare's works that will reward the reader for years to come. This edition (ISBN 0517278901 ) is NOT one of them.
The "1979 Park Lane" edition is actually a reproduction of a century-old (1858) edition by Howard Staunton. Numerous publishers have, like Park Lane, re-released this edition - often without acknowledging that the scholar who edited it has unfortunately done little to modernize this volume since his passing in 1874!
Let's forgive the editor for his posthumous sloth. At the same time, let's warn potential customers they'll be far better served by a handsome modern collection of the Shakespeare works such as David Bevington's (ISBN 0321012542 for the 1997 4th edition). Even a used copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition of Bevington is a great catch.
Reprints of the Staunton edition (by the likes of Park Place or Gramercy ("Globe Illustrated Shakespeare") or Random House 'Value' Publishing) are barely readable. The only interest Staunton reprints may have is to viewers intrigued by their quaint 19th century illustrations - although the quality of their reproduction limits even that value.

This book is on a topic that is evolving so quickly across the world that its usefulness must have lasted a whole 9 months. It is written from the perspective of an international lawyer, which means there is little actual applications in here for the practitioner from the banking or user perspectives. It includes some interesting information that would save a lot of time to compile, such as the existence of "true sale" financial flow transactions in certain countries, but it is sparse.

To me, the most interesting aspect of this book is the historical one, showing how much emerging markets securtiizations have evolved since it was published.

I find the Collaborations-English in Our Lives workbook and student books to be very useful in my ESL classroom. The beginners series has provided my students with a great jump start into English. The workbook and student book make planning lessons easy and the students can organize themselves with the useful notes on when to use the two books together. The books are very specific to learning about the United States. This is helpful especially if your students are very new. These books would be very useful in an Adult ESL classroom, but I use them in a beginning middle school classroom. They also provide great support for learning needed vocabulary and verb use for outside the classrooom. They are very good classroom tools.

A Well Written Book Using Life-Experience Illustrations

It is not my intent to critique your book but I would like to mention some things that impressed me and one thing that I learned from studying Jesus life that might be of benefit to you.

Firstly, is the simplicity of the book and its anecdotal form. There is a television program extant that has a title that asks Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? As a man of 85 years I have come to believe that the present generation is not as smart as a ten year old as to their knowledge of the Bible & Christianity. Therefore it is good that you are writing at the upper level of their comprehension of the subject at hand.

An example of that is page 23 in reference to the word "Grace", a much used but little understood word in the Biblical sense. After reading page 23 I made a concerted effort to pin down a definition of "Grace" on the Internet. "Fred Astaire was a graceful dancer." "The woman took the compliment with `Grace'" But you phrased it undeserved favor, a phrase ripe with meaning. I might paraphrase it as "unearned favor" if you like. The ransom sacrifice was exactly that--an unearned gift sorely needed by imperfect humans doomed to death by the inherited imperfection from the first pair, Adam and Eve.

The one thing that I would like to say though is--never usurp an area that is reserved exclusively for the Creator. Jesus said: "JOHN - kjv 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise." I haven't been able to find the page in your book but I remember you dismissing certain religions sort of "out of hand". Would it not be better to let the Creator do the judging since it is a privilege reserved to himself to do through the Messiah. I do not believe in Universal Salvation but I feel that we may be surprised at some who are resurrected--Catholics, Mormons, Jews, etc. I don't agree with the tenets of those particular religions but the Creator judges the hearts of individuals and that is something that you and I can't do. Whatever transpires from the Creator & his only begotten son will be completely just and with agape love.

An Ocean of Words; towards a comprehensive biography of Kamehameha I

Desha's biographical essay on Kamehameha the First follows all the others I have read on this important historical figure, the first to unify all the Hawaiian islands under one rule. This author has one great idea in mind---to create in the mind of his native Hawaiian readers pride in the accomplishments of the great king. This idea is certainly in line with the goals of the school whose press published the work ,and so is appropriate. Other authors of biographical essays on Kamehameha seemed to have other goals in mind, such as promoting the king as the greatest of the Hawaiian warriors.
What is missing, however, from all the works published are the elements of a comprehensive biography of Kamehameha, as opposed to biographical essays such as Desha's. What would be most valuable in a biography would a set of maps on his wars, a list of key advisors, period illustrations, etc.-all of which are missing in Desha's work.
This reviewer, while admiring Desha's devotion to the Hawaiian people, is still looking for the publication of a comprehensive biography of Kamehameha.

We Need an Updated North Carolina Reconstruction History
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Richard Zuber's 67 page booklet "Reconstruction in North Carolina" is on a high school reading level. The booklet includes useful details on the events of reconstruction but little in-depth analysis. If a person wanted a very concise record of political events, this booklet would be good. There is little content concerning socio-economic events. Popular history from the time period when the booklet was first published (1960's) had not yet reached into those areas.

The book, taken with a grain of salt, is useful for scholars and state history teachers. For historians, this book borders on being part of the old Dunning School, which was discredited by the Revisionist School, and has been replaced by the Post-Revisionist School. Because the work is over 40 years old, the Dunning School was still alive during this time period.

The book is factual but the scant analysis is outdated. It is worth the affordable price but there needs to be a better study.

pretty good source of information. It misses some of the beauty of what the country offers: the food, the arts, the beaches, traditions, etc... Other sources that can help paint a more nicer picture of Vietnam: Vietnam by Olivia Skelton or Vietnam by Audrey Seah

Hohne did it better, as have others. I read the first third of this book and found nothing new or particularly insightful in it. This is a re-telling of a familar story that's been told more compellingly by others. "Once put down, it is impossible to pick up again," as someone else said.... In one word: mediocre.

Not well researched or written. Not a good book.

This book appears to contains no new information or research.

This is not surprising since, if you look at the author's bibliography, the book is based entirely on the works of other authors, all of which are written in English, with perhaps one exception. (In my opinion no credible historian can write a work on any aspect of the Third Reich without a working knowledge of German so that original documents, particularly autobiographies, can be consulted and assayed.)

The author is never too afraid to use colorful adjectives to describe persons and events, although how he has any idea which adjectives to apply to which persons and events is unclear since he is basing his story on secondary and tertiary sources, at best. His personal prejudices are also self-evident throughout the book and repeatedly stated with enthusiam, further diminishing the quality of the work, which at times reads more like an unfinished novella than an historical piece.

It's puzzling that this book, written in the 1970s, is still in print. The reason is probably that the author has somewhat of an engaging writing style, even if what he writes lacks substance. Also in the book's favor is that it does contain several interesting photos, although 19 of the 21 photos in the book were obtained from the British Imperial War Musuem (further showing a lack of originality and initiative by the author).
