Milan Books

This book is an introduction to partial differential equations (PDEs) and the relevant functional analysis tools which PDEs require. This material is intended for second year graduate students of mathematics and is based on a course taught at Michigan State University for a number of years. The purpose of the course, and of the book, is to give students a rapid and solid research-oriented foundation in areas of PDEs, like semilinear parabolic equations, that include studies of the stability of fluid flows and, more generally, of the dynamics generated by dissipative systems, numerical PDEs, elliptic and hyperbolic PDEs, and quantum mechanics.

The battle for Leyte was one of the big ones. It was one of the few where Nimitz and MacArthur worked together to come up with the forces needed to begin taking back the Phillipines. In this book Mr. Vego shows an extraordinary amount of research in what both the Allies (mostly American) and the Japanese were doing to prepare for and fight the battle.

The most famous part of the battle was Halsey's decision to take virtually all of his carrier force north to fight the Japanese northern decoy force. This, of course, left the naval forces around Leyte very weak. This event again shows the careful research that characterizes the book.

Years later Halsey still defended his actions saying, 'given the same circumstances and the same information ..., I would make it again.' The author's conclusion, 'no decision can be considered sound if the commander does exactly what the enemy wants him to do.'

Writing many years after the battle Mr. Vego has the ability to draw a whole series of conclusions about the battle (too many to go into here) and his final chapters are a masterpiece of conclusions and lessons learned.

This beautiful book was written in 1980 and is not outdated at all. The drawing illustrations are fantastic. I am purchasing 25 books this Christmas for my daughters, sisters and special ladies in my life. Please buy this book!

This is book 2 of the six part "War of Powers" series by Robert Vardeman and Victor Milan. It's first=rate sword-and-sorcery type fantasy with a large helping of adult-oriented humor, graphic sex, and violence. Not for children, but well worth reading if you like this genre. Books from this series often turn up in used book stores.

When I open this book I was amazed at the quality of the color pictures and all the info on each mineral. This book is an extreme value for the pictures alone. The pictures of rare and beautiful minerals are exceptional. The mineral information can be used for beginner on up, A must have book for any rockhound.

I am a pre-school teacher for nursery, pre-K and kindergarten students. I have found this book of songs and c.d. along with the rest of the series extremely useful in teaching the children vocabulary and traditional french songs. the songs are typically traditional songs which have been updated to today's music which makes listening and singing lots of fun. i would highly recommend this book and c.d.

My husband is American, I am French and we live in the USA. I would like our baby girl to listen to French children songs (and maybe learn). I bought some other CDs but I was disappointed.

However this one is a gem!
I was so happy to "rediscover" the songs I learnt and sang when I was a child and happier to see my daugther seemed interested.
She is 9 months old and listens very carefully to the different voices, instruments, rhythms etc...

The melodies and voices are very pleasant, the arrangements are updated (more modern without losing the spirit of the songs).

The cover of the book is thick (will last long) and the pages are colourful, cute drawings... (lyrics + music notes)

This CD/book could be used in a French/international class also.

We listen to the CD pretty often and I am not tired of it...

Vivant aux USA et mon epoux etant americain, je voulais que notre Puce de 9 mois s'habitue a entendre (et apprendre) des comptines francaises chantees par des personnes autre que sa mere (c-a-d moi, pour etre honnete, j'etais a court de chansons et la memoire flanchait un peu). Apres avoir ete decue par un autre CD pour enfants, je redoutais un peu cet achat.

Mais les commentaires de cet article m'ont encouragee a le commander.

QUELLE AGREABLE SURPRISE !!!

Ce fut un plaisir de redecouvrir ces comptines qui ont berce notre enfance et de les faire decouvrir a nos petits bouts.

Ma puce a 9 mois et ecoute avec soin les differents sons, voix, instruments, rythmes etc...

Les melodies & voix sont tres agreables, entrainantes, douces et pas du tout crispantes (instrumentation mise au gout du jour)

Le livre est tres colore, les illustrations sont douces et mignonnes. La couverture est bien epaisse et rembourree :-)

Le seul petit truc que je regrette est qu'il n'y ait que 5 chansons instrumentales (Karaoke pour Bebe )

This is a fine history of a particular convent/religious order (the Angelicas) in Milan from its origins in 1530 to around 1630 in detail, and then a quick epilogue to its suppression in 1810 and refounding in 1879. While there is lots of good, primary source information about the convent itself, in many ways the convent history is a springboard to larger issues of the day -- various class and gender issues, along with a general look at Milan, church politics, etc. I found it particularly interesting because I have always viewed the Tridentine enclosure as a positive, freeing act for the nuns. This book, however, has a slightly different, though quite fairly and well delineated take on it.

I should also comment that the book seemed especially well written to me. The author has a good command of words and I look forward to any future work she may produce.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of the period, in general, and gender or Church history in particular.

A real treat to read! This book contains reviews/critiques of all of Kundera's major works begining with his first novel, The Joke, up to 1996's Slowness with heavy emphasis placed on analysis of The Book of Laughter and Forgetting. The highlight of this collection are the four interviews with Kundera. He is a fantastic interviewee and we, of course, gain further insight into the workings of his mind. To maximize enjoyment of this collection I recommend that the reader be familiar with all of Kundera's output.
