Should Be Used As A Textbook

I purchased this expecting some advice on legal issues, but this book is so much more. It talks you through the whole process of producing a film from start to finish, including valuable information on finding investors, attaching stars, behind the scene terminology, production advice, sample legal forms and what do with your film once you've made a cut. All of the advice is indispensable. This is a must have for any independent film producer, especially those new to the industry. It should be taught as a textbook in film schools. The most helpful book on producing I've stumbled upon yet.

Indispensable

I highly recommend this book. As a first time amateur independent film producer, with about 30 film books resting on my shelf, I believe I was constantly thumbing through this one the most during preproduction. This book contains so much useful information and helpful insights, it's almost like having an industry consultant right there with you. Unlike other books, there weren't a lot of sections where they seemed to rush on to the next chapter without exploring the present topic in some depth.

Great Resource

If it's not already, this book will soon become the industry standard for substantive knowledge of the film business for independent filmmakers. Deal points, standard contract provisions, the often technical and confusing jargon, and the historical context for many industry practices are all covered here in comprehensive yet concise fashion. Topics of interest that are covered in depth include standard talent and producer agreements, developing a screen play, financing, and digital distribution. The book was a tremendous asset to me when I had to help an independent filmmaker comply with complicated federal securities laws in order to raise $200,000. Highly recommended.

It was a book with that gave you a good background on how film production works from a legal perspective. So you should read it if that is your concern. The authors are lawyers, not producers.

This book is a serious but very readable approach to educating filmmakers on the maze of legal hoops that must be jumped through in order to create a film. Indispensable resource to have.

I thought about writing a long and detailed review of this book. But the following will suffice: I have bought three copies of Moondog, as previous purchases have been loaned to freinds who adamantly refuse to return them! One of the funniest books I have ever read. Don't read it on a train, you'll have everyone staring at you as you burst into fits of laughter. Can the stories be true? Who cares...

Funny if you are a pilot. It might not be for young children, though, due to a few words used however, it is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Good flying book

Most books that are self published or turned over to a POD service have a deserved stigma attached to them. Mr. Fusco's engaging account of the first part of his aviation carear from flight instructor to charter and cargo pilot defies any such preconception.

This book is about pilots and flying, not in the technical sense of _Stick and Rudder_, or in a philosophical way like _Fate is the Hunter_. It's a reminder of a time when engineering safety margins were there to be used and confindence counted alongside experience. Although the book is humorous, it pulls a little at the heartstings to read about planes being broken for salvage-- made slightly better when you realize that these planes are being flown right up to the end.

This book is also a good picture of an industry that isn't the same and never will be. Current charter and cargo operations operate under FAR part 135, which effectively requires a pilot to have 1200hrs of flight time. Most pilots get this by being a flight instructor, but the days of a $50 solo in 4 hours are long gone (and that's a good thing!). Still, it doesn't hurt to remember our roots.

Probably the funniest flying book I ever read. Found myself laughing out loud over and over. Especially for people who learned to fly in a Piper Cub. I've given many copies to my old flying buddies.

If you enjoy good humor, you should read this book. If you are a pilot, you should definitely read this book. If you are a pilot who enjoys good humor, you MUST read this book. I laughed aloud so much that my wife bought a copy for our friend, a retired airline captain. He laughs aloud continually as he reads it. The vignettes are over the top, but within each chapter are aphorisms that you will recall with a grin long after you have finished the book. The plot line is aviation, but the humor is universal. Those who are not pilots will enjoy it; those with any aviation experience will love it.

I checked this out of the library and read it when I was 4 and have loved it ever since. It's one of those "must-have" books. It's a children's book but adults can enjoy it as well. The idea of the book is very sophistocated but can be easily understood by kids due to the simple language and color artwork.

I asked friends who practices Buddhism about any books that they could recommend that I could gift to a young friend who lost a companion very unexpectedly. Although they said that the content does not strictly follow Buddhist principles they suggested it with rave reviews. I was intrigued by the delicate simple manner of the story and noticed an interesting element in the illustrations ( read it to discover for yourself!)The story seems to soften the sadness of losing a loved one, reminds the reader of how dying is a part of living and raises hope that there is life after. It also beautifully narrates how fulfilling and rich a simple life can be. The illustrations are soft and enchanting like the story and the ending is all embracing....

Explains the process of death and rebirth/reincarnation in a gentle and interesting way. Not weird at all and so suitable for children of non-Buddhist background as well as it provides an valuable insight as to how Buddhism/other belief systems explain death and the afterlife.

What a clever and easy way to entertain. We used the ideas in this book for a large gathering and offered multiple tastings. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot about extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, dark chocolate and cheese. I highly recommend the book to anyone looking for a new and fun entertaining idea.

I am always looking for a new party idea and this one was great. This book tells you everything you need to know background wise for each tasting party theme. The best part is you can assign different items for each guest to bring. It's win-win.

We used to have a couples dinner club but it just got so complicated to organize. Someone gave me this book along with some beautiful small appetizer plates. What a great gift! Since then, we've had a few tastings, and it really has made for some variations to the usual "come over for wine" get togethers. It's quite a revelation and ultimately, helps you as a consumer to taste a variety of similar things. We've tasted olive oils, coffee (at a brunch), wines, cheese and tonight we have people coming over to taste olives and tomatoes. Really a worthwhile book if you entertain often.

I felt ripped off

Review Date: 2007-08-16
Okay, it's my fault that I feel ripped off - I'd purused the olive oil and balsamic vinegar sections and said to myself "This is great" - the advice on what accompaniments to serve, the vocabulary of the product, the grid to evaluate each item being tested with its emphasis on one's own palate... the material is well done. The book is beautifully laid out.

The problem: The only tasting items discussed are wine, cheese, beer and tea which all need a book of their own; chocolate, honey, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and apples which are the highlights of the book and cured meat which, to my mind, is too broad a topic. There are many other items which would work well in the book's format - salts, chiles, mustards, olives, potatoes, greens, breads, butters ... Some of these could easily replace the weaker portions of the text. But what is really missing is the resources to discover how to plan one's own testings of products not include in the book. Either skeleton chapters for other products or references in the resources section could fill this gap. But I can't consider $22 for 5 probable "tasting club" menus a good buy.

I purchased this book because I love to entertain. However, it's just such a tiring process. I also needed new supper club ideas. This book solves both problems!

This book covers the basic wine tasting, but also provides foodie treat tastings such as:
chocolate
cheese
honey
tea
olive oil
cured meats
balsamic vinegar
apples
beer

The author provides worksheets to help conduct the tasting, recipes and menues. Each tasting section is organized as follows:

Know your food
Find your food
Choose your accompaniments
Oranize your tasting
Learn your palate

If you want a head start for your tasting, try Crate & Barrel. In store and online they have tasting honeys, salts, chocolates and olive oil.

This book is a must-have for any foodie!

In this book, Abby finds out she and Anna have scoliosis. Abby only has a little bit of it, so she dosen't have to wear a brace. But Anna has to because of the way her spine is. Scoliosis is a thing where your spine is not completely straight. As a result, if it's bad you might have to wear a brace. Anna's brace, she will wear underneath her clothing. Since if she wears bulky clothes so nobody will notice her brace, Abby gets an idea to buy her some clothes. That's one of the many things Abby does to try to make Anna feel better. But the clothes she chooses are things only Abby would like, meaning she bought clothes Anna hates! Abby also cuts her hair to look just like Anna. Abby even wanted to try on Anna's brace! Also, the BSC is planning a Winter Carnival, but the snow is dissapearing! How will things get back to normal if they are already this bad? Find out in BSC#4, Abby's Twin!

This book is TOTALLY AWESOME! DEFINATLY one of Bonnie's best. You see, Debora,(Max's wife) is getting ready to have a baby. And Debora asks The Saddle Club to tell her a story, THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HORSES! LISA tells about how her mother sent her to "Charm School." STEVIE tells about some of the "Pranks" she played when she was young. And CAROLE tells about how she found a "Puppy Dog",NOT! A LIE TO BE SURE! (A fun lie, I might add.) The, "Puppy Dog" was really a horse, OF CORSE!

This is an interesting book I'd found at the library, and ordered it on Amazon as soon as I could. It tells four different stories per page, and you have to figure out which story goes where, and when each one starts and ends, and how they're all connected somehow. I really like this one more than the children do. It's too illogical for most of them.

I find that I can follow the connection between the stories better with each reading. It is one of my 10 favorite children's books of all time.

Black and White is a children's picture book, but I have shared it not only with little ones but also with groups of high school juniors and a group of adults who also enjoyed the fun in this book. The "warning" on the title page tells you thatthis could be one story or four stories. Each page offers four quadrants with a story in each, and it is up to the readers to put the pieces together. It is a great book to read with others and have a ball as you play with the author through a lot of fun!

Simply geniusly told, it's amazing how someone can come up with such a story-riddle. Is it four stories or is it one story? Certain to spark discussions as one hint after the other reveals a little more. A book unlike any other. Smart and fun entertainment. Beautifully illustrated. David Macaulay at his best.

I bought this book because of the author's reputation and was not disappointed. Several story lines appear to occur simultaneously and enjoyably. I plan to use this book with small groups of students and ask each student to narrate a different story line. This is a fairly complex picture book that I'm sure all will enjoy.

My opinion: The most creative of the Caldecotts
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 39 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-23
David Macaulay is known for his architectural books: Pyramid, Castle, and City: a Story of Roman Planning and Construction and their accompanying videos. However, this Caldecott winner is a demonstration of that soaring Macaulay imagination!

Macaulay posts this warning right on the title page: "This book appears to contain a number of stories that do not necessarily occur at the same time. Then again, it may contain only one story. In any event, careful inspection of both words and pictures is recommended."

I'll say this at the beginning: As a children's librarian, I would never read or show this to a class. There is no way to explain this complicated, interconnected book of four stories that run into and out of each other.

Here is how they look. There are four stories on the two adjoining pages with two stories per page. Each story has predominant colors of blue, green, brown, and black and white. Colors and patterns spill and slip from one story to the next, but the thrust of the story is done in black and white. It must be noted that Macaulay is NOT saying that everything is black and white. Oh no! If anything he is saying that everything is NOT black and white, but he uses black and white, both words and pictures, to say it.

What I just wrote in that last sentence gives a sense of the story. It is brilliantly creative! I had a special story time with some gifted students last year, second graders. They had so much fun with this book. I had to get them started on "reading" the pictures (this is a picture book with narrative on each story block), but once they caught on, they rip-roared with the story!!

Remember the admonition to stay in the lines and not think outside the box. David Macaulay failed that class because he both colors outside the lines--literally--and his characters get outside their cartoon boxes and into each other's boxes. The story is one big paean to imagination, creativity, whimsy, flight of fancy, freedom to explore, and freedom to see the Big Picture.

Wow, this is one great book. Every child should own it! I certainly do!

I knew about Fred Gwynnes'writing and artwork in children's books. This was the first one I bought, what a delight!.. I'll be back for more!

Yet another fine book of play-on-words from Fred Gwynne. Kids love the pictures that literally illustrate the text, and these books usually have us a giggling hysterically. I'm on the lookout for "A Little Pigeon-Toad" and "The Sixteen Hand Horse".

Excellent book for young students who are exploring language and homonyms. Colorful illustrations grab attention and nearly every page gets a reaction.
