A Look Back at the Six-Team NHL

This book is a true treasure-chest of puck history for any fan
of the National Hockey League. "Years of Glory" chronicles the pre-expansion "Original-Six" -team era of the NHL. On the inside front and back covers are shown old-style tin table hockey players in the uniforms of the "Original-Six" team members: the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Inside you will find colorful stories and photos of a bygone era when players went without helmets and goalies without masks. Many of the all-time greats are featured: Gordie Howe, Rocket Richard, Bobby Hull, Jean Beliveau, Jacques Plante, Glenn Hall, Terry Sawchuk, and Bobby Orr among many. There is even a chapter on minor-pro hockey during the six-team era with players Johnny Bower, Guyle Fielder and Andy Hebenton featured. Many interesting statistics like Stanley Cup playoff scores and league draft results are listed. The catalogue of dozens of great old photos alone makes this volume well worth its price.

As great as a Bobby Hull slaphot

Fantastic year-by-year account of the postwar Original Six era. Each season is covered with extra reading on things like the Habs' unforgotten dynasty (i.e. the '60s) or the Wings' 7(?) straight first-place finishes. Photos are superb and the writing is first-rate. I never lived through this era but the book made it come alive for me.

Tuesday's game was great! It was so phat. I think the blazers are ill. The best part was when pippen sunk that 3 to win by 1. Bryon Russell was gaurding him but pippen faked him out and launced the long range 3-pointer from way downtown.Pippen was throwing excellent passes 2 his teammates. Stoudamire was outstanding. He was scoring 3's every 5 seconds. The book deserves 5 stars.peace.e-mail me at caseyc@adelphia.net ,or casey@krazymp3z.com , or pimpflex88@hotmail.com .e-mail me.my sn is pimpflex88 . bye.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that has followed the pistons throughout the years. This book talks about the pistons in their championship run in 88-89. It has a nice summary of each game throughout the playoffs and some critical plays and moments that helped get them there. It also has some very good insight from Isiah Thomas who scored an amazing 16 points in a measely 93 seconds. It talks about the huge rivalry between the pistons celtics, pistons lakers, and pistons and bulls. I learned a lot of things that went on specially behind the scenes. There is also a bunch of pictures from great moments throughout the playoffs. One of Kareem Abdul Jabaar shooting his famous skyhook in his final game. And one of Jordan vs. Isiah in a jump ball. I also learned a lot from reading each players statistics which are located in the bacfk of the book and in some pictures. I never knew who contributed and who was all even on the team. So as u can see i would high recommend this book and enjoyed reading it very much. If you have any questions just email me.

Why I like this book, by Joey Arthur, age 6.

This is the best sports book I've ever read (and the only football book that I've read.) The book tells most of the details about the Carolina Panthers. The book has good photos of the players and coaches. Since I live near Charlotte, NC, the Panthers are my favorite team. I'd love to see a live game sometime.

Great highlights from the '98/'99 season w/photos.

I loved this publication, especially the reviews of various games from the regular season, along with many good quality color photos from the games and of the team. It was a great way to recap the championship season of the Stanley Cup winners of 1999, and to keep the memories forever. "'99 NHL CHAMPS" is recommended reading (by me) for all Stars fans and hockey fans alike.

This is a true behind the scenes look at an NFL team

Review Date: 2002-01-01
I have read and reread this book countless times over the years and it never fails to educate me about the harsh and cruel life of an NFL player or coach.
Fred Moody did an outstanding job of capturing EVERYTHING that an NFL team has to deal with during a season (and this was a very extraordinary season).
It also harkens back to a time when NFL football was revered in the Northwest, now it is just a lame excuse.

The National Pastime With A Washington Focus
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-07
Jim Roberts has produced a highly readable book dealing with the game in our cruelly deprived city from before the Civil War through his T-ball and Little League adventures in Great Falls, VA in the 1990s... Along the way, the author shows us a winning sense of humor...Mr. Roberts escorts the reader through the "mostly dismal" history of Washington's primary team, noting that the first Nationals (later known as the Senators) took the field in 1859, rather than when the American League was founded in 1901... There is a gentle chapter on one-time basball broadcaster Ronald Reagan that tells how he wrote Cleveland Indians start Bob Feller requesting an autographed ball for a boy who had been shot by his father, a mentally unstable World War II Hero Mr. Feller sent the ball. More than 30 years later, meeting with President Reagan at the White House, the Hall of Fame pitcher found that the Gipper rememembered the incident... Mr. Roberts interviews and writes movingly about two late area residents who played outside the major leagues, Lacy Ellerbe in the Negro Leagues and Claire Schillace Donahoe in the wartime All-American Girls Professional League. He relates how Mrs. Donahoe, irritated by a called strike, once hiked up her skirt and told the male umpire, "Would you please look at my knees." Said the cooperative ump: "I am - believe me I am."...Other topics include the annual Congressional baseball game (featuring suc former star athletes at Jim Bunning, Wilmer "Vinegar Bend" Mizell, Steve Largent...Mr Roberts also gives us a look at the Shenandoah Valley summer league and writes sensitively about Jimmy Trimble, who was a star pitcher at St. Albans School in the District and considered a likely major leaguer until he was killed on Iwo Jima near the end of World War II...In his introduction, Mr. Roberts describes watching the Montreal Expos play an exhibition game last spring in Fort Lauderdale, Fla, and noting a team press release in which pitcher where described as "lanceurs," catchers as "receveurs," outfielders as "voltigeurs" and coaches as "instruceurs." He adds, "What a disgrace. The capital of the United States - where baseball is the national pastime - doesn't."... Someday "this outrage" will be rectified. Until then, Mr. Roberts has given us a wonderful book that should at least partially assuage our pangs.
