I bought the book just because I am a fan, but I am very pleased with its overall quality. It's a well-made hardcover book with durable sewn binding. Printed on thick, glossy paper, the large color photographs look bright and extremely sharp. The book includes Woody Durham's broadcast on 2 CDs. The book is not organized into game-by-game stories like the News and Observer's book. Instead, it has two main sections. First is a section of essays on various topics like "Workdays in Maui," "Senior Day," and "Two Steps to St. Louis." Second is a section of essays by all five members of the coaching staff and eight of the regular players. The book also includes an essay by Dean Smith, a record of the season, and list of awards and honors.

Instead of a game by game retelling, the book is more in story format. It's very well done.

There are two great things about this book. The first being the freshness of the information. When a team wins a championship, the win is almost covered to death so to speak, so I was definately pleasantly suprised when the book contained many stories that I had not yet heard. Secondly, and probably the best thing about the book was the complete Tarheel Sports Network radio broadcast of the Championship game and the post-game press conferences. This book is a must for any Tarheel fan, and the CD is something you will listen to over and over.

Management Understanding

I have just finished reading Equipped to Lead and found it hard to put down between oportunities. I read the book in two afternoons sitting on my balcony on a beautiful Ohio summer afternoon. Having been in the world of senior management for some 45 years, it appears as if Galen Walters and Dan Sanders have opened the door for many who have struggled with the chaos that seems to prevail throughout industry today. I share many, if not all, the philosophical approaches outlined in this wonderful book.

If all of us in senior management responsibilities would implement, at least to some degree, the 4P system, I believe our worlds would be more acceptable and profitable. The profit would not only be financial but personally rewarding as well. I have tried to always put people first and it has not been an easy task. When you put the people, process, partners and performance altogether, then the result will equal success.

My personal compliments to the team of Walters and Sanders for a great piece of work.

Proven and Innovative managment system

As the Managing Partner of national consulting firm, I have the privilege of interacting with senior executives of Fortune 500 companies on a regular basis. Almost without exception, these leaders are always looking for a better way to manage their company and utilize the resources with which they are entrusted. I truly believe that Equipped to Lead provides one of the most innovative and practical management systems that I have ever seen. Whether you are managing a small family owned business or a multinational corporation, this management system will provide you with new ideas that can be immediately implemented.

One section of the book I found interesting in Equipped to Lead was that of the importance of sparking passion in employees so that the employees can identify with a higher purpose and thereby "become builders and not custodians". Another interesting and unique concept was the development of a "Prioritization Table". This should be used daily by anyone in a management capacity. And finally, the 4P's used to monitor and manage People, Processes, Partners and Performance is exceptional.

I have known one of the authors, Galen Walters for over 45 years. Galen started a graphics design and printing business, literally in a back room of his house. He grew that business to be one of the national powerhouses in the printing industry. During this time, Galen developed a magnificent management system and methodology that I believe, was in large part, responsible for his success. He named it the 4P's. In this book, Galen Walters and Dan Sanders clearly and concisely lay out for the reader this refreshing and unique approach to management. This is one of those rare management programs that is not just conceptual or theory but was developed and proven over and over again in the building of a very successful business. It is the type of program that should make a major impact on the bottom line of any organization.

I found Equipped to Lead to be outstanding and would consider it a must read for anyone in management, in business or for anyone contemplating going into business.

Excellent review of the Nationals coming to Washington

For a Washington baseball fan like me, this book is a must-have, for those who want to read a very good account of the events in the return of baseball to the Nation's Capital, this book is the best that I have seen about it.

I am a longtime fan of Washington baseball, loving the Washington Senators in the 1960's, and have been studying the history of baseball in D. C. for years. I attended the 2005 Opening Night game that I had looked forward to for 33 years, and also many other games since then. Barry Svrluga gives a very interesting inside account of the July 5 game when Jose Guillen threw the ball over the catcher's head and all the way to the backstop, I had wondered what on earth was going on that night, I saw that happen in person. The accounts were interesting, and told a story that is not obvious to the average baseball fan who does not know what goes on behind-the-scene.

A very good book, I highly recommend it!

A "must" for your baseball library

Many of us non-native Washingtonians see the Nationals as simply an overdue return of baseball to the DC area. But few of us are really privy to an inside behind the scenes view of the agony and ecstasy experienced by the die hard fans and baseball professionals who lived through this experience. If you thought baseball was just a game you won't after reading this compelling tale of just how DC came to have a new baseball team. If you want to understand more than just the current standings or statistics of your favority team and really want to know how the business of baseball is "played" grab a copy of this one. You'll find it an easy and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Attention baseball fans who are looking for the best reads in 2006...
The two outstanding baseball books this season are "National Pastime" and "Black and Blue." Why?? Frank Robinson is why. Robby is the "Man for All Seasons", as told in these incredible two extraordinary straight-forward non-fiction books re-capping the 1966 Baltimore Orioles and the 2005 Washington Nationals seasons. These efforts are sports writing at its finest by two of the trade's brightest and most promising upcoming reporters. I urge baseball fans to seek out and relish Frank Robinson --this 70 year-old legend and icon who epitomizes what is great about the National Pastime. "God bless you please, Mr. Robinson, heaven holds a place for those who pray. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you." Good luck, Skip, in 2006!!!!

Andy does a great job of capturing the essence of the World Cup in his book, 23 Days in Korea. The book was very easy to read (I actually finished it in one night) and brings back some of the greatest memories for any US soccer supporter. For anyone wanting to add to their collection of memorabilia, or simply get fired up for the World Cup in 2006, this is a great book to have. Well done Andy.

I met Andy over in Korea and he perfectly captured what it means to be an American Soccer fan. For many of us who attended the world cup, it has been difficult to share that experience with others because few words can adequately describe the passion that was shared amongst the Yanks in Korea. This is a great read for anyone who has fallen in love with the beautiful game and is a must read for anyone who was in Korea.

Effective Way to Problem-Solve in Schools

I have read The Care Team Approach: A Problem-Solving Process for Effective School Change and found it be an invaluable source for school support. It is a well-organized, nicely structured book that explains Care Teams, why they are effective, and how to implement one in your school system. It also provides examples of difficult situations in a school setting that people can relate to and it offers effective ways to problem-solve. As a teacher I found it to be resourceful and easy to follow- a "must read."

A model that schools can move forward with

The concept of student assistance teams has floated around schools for decades. While few can argue against the high value of the idea and purpose driving these teams, processes of implementing these teams have been flawed. The book, the Care Team Approach seems to bring new light to the necessity of these teams in contemporary USA and provides proven instructions that guarantee success. Plus, it offers a lot of trouble shooting for those instances when care teams don't go in their intended directions. Inevitably, care teams will run off course, thus it is critical that new models address how to return the team back on course. And this new book seems to do just that in a very practical, easy-to-follow manner.
