The format of the book looked promising: following a group of students through the college application and acceptance process. However, except for the math student, the characters came off as totally shallow. As a whole they seemed more interested in getting in a `big name' college than finding the right fit for their interests and abilities.

The author provided little additional insight into the application process than other books. Furthermore, when a student's paperwork was due "on April 31" I wondered how much fact-checking went into writing this book.

Interesting book about five young people trying to get into major colleges. All have their own ways and different backgrounds. You will find yourself hoping for the best result for all five. A must read for high school seniors, but I think anyone would enjoy this book.

This book leaves me amazed by both the focused young ones out there and the rigorous climb to get into the right college. I started college in 1998 and even then, the desperation was evident. But today the process seems that much more saturated in complexity. Jager-Hyman has introduced a new era with her book-- she is a fresh voice of reason. Out with the books of plain old "How to" and in with this excellent documentary style "How to." Jager-Hyman gives us the real scoop. Any parents or would-be college students should be grateful!

A must read for parents and their college-bound kids

At the most esteemed collegiate institutions applications far exceed the amount of available slots. The reality is an increasing number of exceedingly qualified candidates are denied admission to the university of their choice. Joie Jager-Hyman offers engaging and informative insight into five-students' quest for Ivy League acceptance. And perhaps, most importantly, leaves the reader questioning a system that equates a person's self-worth with the name on their degree.

Fantastic book! This book is so well written and engaging. I felt like I really felt like I knew the students whose college application journeys were portrayed. I even cried when one of them had (his or her - don't want to give it away) dream come true. It was also beautiful to read how their views of what will make them happy in the end changed over their senior year. I hope to share this book with other parents whose children are applying to colleges. Although my own children are presently at (and also looking at)state colleges, it's such an honest and personal portayal of the pressures of senior year. I hope the author will write a follow-up to describe the pleasures and challenges of college.

This is the same organization that formed the Wall Street Review of Books before becoming BLRI. In any case, BLRI review of this book says:

Wow-- this is this honestly the best book about college ever... EVER. I am graduating high school next month and I read this book as soon as it came out, and it helped me get into my top choice! There is so much information in here, I even made my older brother read it, and even though he graduated from college already he said it was a really great book, very interesting and lots of facts you never would have known.

Fantastic value and a great help!

College Prowler puts out some great guidebooks, they're all written by current students so readers are given a real insider's look at these schools. The guidebooks typically retail for $14.95 each. For those who are looking at one or all eight Ivy League schools, this book is a great value. You're basically getting eight guides in one, not to mention bonus chapters on admissions, athletics, secret societies and more. I've been flipping through this book since buying it from Amazon and have to say I'm quite pleased with my purchase. I'd recommend it to those currently in the midst of the college admissions process!

This book is incredible! There are so many facts, figures, anecdotes, statistics etc. about The Ivy League (PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE) in this book that I was not aware of until now--and I am a Junior at Dartmouth--I attended Yale for a year, and I have visted four other Ivy schools on several occasions. After looking over College Prowler's grading criteria for each of the eight school sections, I determined that their grades and analysis on each aspect of each individual school (including: Academics, Local Atmosphere, Nightlife/Social Scene, Campus Strictness, Athletics, Drug Scene, Overall Experience, and even Parking) are actually very accurate and on-point. College Prowler has seemingly gained credibility over other Ivy League college resources, because they utilize actual Ivy students to author their individual guidebooks--which is why "Untangling" is a steal for under $20, because it includes content from each of the eight individual guides within.

I read this book after my 13 year hockey player finished. This is a life lesson book. She is one of the top in her field and like C.Gunn had things to overcome that made them stronger. This book lets girls know these are real people that worked hard, and it is possible to shoot for the stars.

My daughter is a 10 year old girl hockey player and both she and I read the book, she actually did a powerpoint presentation for school on the book. This book is more than just a hockey book but an insiration to all girls about the obstacles Angela overcame in her life. After reading the book myself I am glad to know that my daughter looks up to Angela and wants to be like her, there is NO better role model for a young girl to look up to than Angela. This book is a must for all young girls, no matter what sport or activity they are involved in.

This book is less about hockey and more about getting a peek inside the life of one of the greatest athletes of all time. It details the dedication that excellence requires, combined with personal stories from Angela's life. This book should be a part of every female hockey player's library. As a bonus, Ruggiero is seriously hot.

This book talks about some of the early formings of girls/womens hockey in the USA. This is a very good book to read if you are familiar with hockey. Even if you are not involved with hockey you will like this book, because it talks about overcoming the odds and moving up in the ranks.

Sweet revenge. Those foolish young men at Dartmouth thought they'd haze the newly arrived coeds because as Dartmouth men, they were superior. Well, Barreca balances the ledger in this book--and big time. Those men are unmasked as nothing more than boys who think that by acting smart they were really smart. Think again. Barreca has seen through masculine insecurity and has shown us what a really smart, sensitive, and observing woman can make out of a difficult situation. This is a snappy, funny, really surprising and charming book. Give a copy away to that young woman heading off to college. She'll love it.

College Prowler books are well worth the investment for students and parents investigating colleges. They give a detailed picture of the school, written from current students' perspectives. Once you have narrowed your list of schools to 10 or fewer, I would recommend buying the College Prowler titles for all of those. It's a small investment compared to the cost of visiting the campus, application fees, and -- of course -- TUITION!

If you're apply to colleges this books is great!

College Prowler books are stupendous for helping you with your college search. The Cornell University guidebook is especially great if you are considering applying to Cornell, if you have already been accepted, or if you would like to compare it to other Ivy League schools. It is even a good resource if you are visiting the school, as it contains tour information, addresses and recommendations for restaurants, and information on places to visit in the surrounding community. As for the school itself, the Cornell College Prowler book considers subjects admissions officers would never tell you about like what the drug scene is, how the parties are, and even if the population is hot! It also gives you the down and dirty on academics, stress, professors, and more. It's a great resource and a small price to pay for having piece of mind on your school of choice.

Being from philly, i know alot of the characters in this book. that being said, i know alot of the characters in alot of gangster books written about philly, and alot of them suck or are a bunch of lies. this one is an exception! it's true, interesting and very detailed. so detailed that there's a chapter that basically tells you step by step how to re-rock coke. Carol Saline did a great job. i was impressed. AAAAAAA+++++++

also, 'doctor dealer' is pretty good too. it was written by mark bowden, the guy that wrote 'black hawk down'. both authors are local philly writers.

An interesting tale of Larry Lavin. A dentist with a career ahead of him. The Lure of money led to him dabble in the "Candy" of the 1980's. Intriguing was how he hid so close to the authorities as a fugitive. Good reading. Perhaps he was pursuing what many of taught is the American Dream....well worth the read.

This medical suspense is a real thriller! The author, Dr. Rob Litman really captures the reader's interest by defining the characters and bringing the reader into the story to make the reader feel as if they actually are involved in the story. It is creative and a real masterpiece! The entire story is brought together in the end where you are left sitting at the edge of your seat from the fast-paced medical thriller. I highly recommend this well-written novel! Definitely one of the best I've ever read.

In this book the author examines a Puerto Rican population and an Anglo-American population that live in upper New York. The book examines the relationship between the socially constructed ideologies of race, and race relations in the context of schools. If you are doing research on Culturally responsive curriculm, or if you want to be an informed member of the community of educators for our children, read this book.
