College and University Books

This charming small volume is an alphabetical dictionary of terms common to and distinctive of Cambridge University in England. Stubbings is a Classicist by profession, and he explains both the origins of the terms (many of which come from Latin of course) as well as their present and past meanings. Far from being a simple dictionary, many of the entries are delightful small essays on some aspect of university life, from colleges to fellows, from gowns to orators, from scholars to sizars.

While many of the terms in the volume refer to practices and offices that no longer exist, others are very much alive today, and some deserve wider currency. My own favorite is the verb "to be progged" (to be caught by a proctor while committing some offense).

If you are fond of life in the academic world, or of the history of education, or of odd dialects and strange vocabularies, you will derive much pleasure from this volume. It is a window into a rich and often quirky social environment that is very different from the bureaucratized and slogan-filled universities of today.

By the way, "bedders" are (or were) college bedmakers, largely supplanted today by modern custodians of one sort or another; "bulldogs" are university constables; and "bedells" were once the attendants of the head of the university but now their office involves little more than carrying the university mace on ceremonial occasions.

This guide is easy to read and to the point, yet it is packed with inside information and helpful hints. The author really knows what college is all about and gets you to think about creating a plan for success. He has a knack for pointing out all the trouble spots of college that most students don't realize until they are in trouble.

I highly recommend this book!

Sue Lonoff has done a tremendous job in collecting, transcribing and translating the Belgian Essays of Emily and Charlotte Bronte. The essays are represented first in their original/French version, including M.Hegers corrections, then in translation. The comments Lonoff made are very instructive, however, this book will mostly attract the scientific Bronte enthusiast. After all it has to be admitted that school essays, however elaborate they may be, cannot be regarded at as literature.

This was the first text on women's history that I read back in Junior high, and I absolutely loved it. Until this point, I dod not realize how complex and developed the women's movement had become by the 1970's. Being born in 1979, I always assumed that feminism was perpetually around.

Since it's a safe bet there are more young people (and future generations) who will also believe that way, this book should be required reading for anybody who wants to learn how the women's movement really impacted America. Unfortunately, women's histrpy is underrepresented in public schools and we are paying dearly for the gap in knowllege.

My only reservation about this book, is that there are no pictures of the various protests and deomstrations in the 1960's and 1970's. Considering feminism:the career was not really feasabile until the 1980's (monetary and logistic reasons)it neverless would be inspiring to see women (and men) changing the system with what they did have. It still deserves all the stars for a well written and acessable book.

If you're considering attending a Midwestern university, I highly recommend this book. In addition to typical information about universities, there are also testimonials from students about student life, organizations, and whether the campus parties are good. Some comments include: "There's not really a lot to do", "The faculty care greatly about the students", and "Everyone drinks and the parties rock". That's certainly not information the school's P.R. department would disclose!

All in all, a wonderful guide (which I used) to determine which school fits you best.

This book took over eight years to research and write, and is a labor of love yet grounded in sound historical research. You will get to know Donna in a very personal way, experience her growth into a thoughtful and caring adult, share her enthusiasm for her new teaching career and delight in her introduction to falling in love (and out of love)! You'll hold your breath as she rides with student pilots across the frozen tundra and wind and snowswept mountains, landing in remote bush villages as they stop to ask directions, and let go a huge sigh of relief as they land on fumes. It is a book of hopes and dreams fulfilled and lost. It is a book Donna had hoped to write, but could not---so instead, I wrote it for her with the help of her twin sister and older sister, best friends, colleagues, former students, and even a landlord; as well as extensive research in local, regional, state, and national archives.
Please enjoy it! I think she would be proud!

You can tell from Publishers Weakly's humorless, ignorant, and anti-intellectual "review" that this is an intelligent and significant book, which therefore doesn't matter to those who see books as commodities.

This book should be read by everyone, I felt it was interesting and found it educational for those of us not exposed to the Gay, Lebian or BiSexual culture around us.

I really dug this book. It looks great on my coffee table at work and everyone always picks it up. I also like "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football." It's a good one too.
I highly recommend both titles.

Go Vols!

I think that it is a good book because many educators, sign language interpreters, counselors, and paraprofessionals at schools for the deaf and public schools are not trained to teach the children of color from multicultural perspectives. Often, the children are victims of racial beliefs. I believe that the book will help them to re-evaluate the curriculum, attitudes of personnels, and change the things in Deaf education programs. It is highly recommended for African American, Hispanic, Asian American, American Indian, and White school employees.
