Raising Quality Care Through Careful Observation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-12-02
Now in its Fifth Edition, Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children, by Dorothy H. Cohen, Virginia Stern, Nancy Balaban and Nancy Gropper (Teachers College Press, 2008) is a valuable resource for family child care providers. Observation is a key element in a providers training background, a requirement in many cases such as with the Registry, the CDA and NAFCC accreditation. Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children gives providers a handbook of information to using appropriate observing and recording techniques as well as how to use this information to make decisions regarding a child's development and educational plan.

The authors carefully examine each aspect of a child's day and the opportunities it presents for observation, teaching providers to do more than record what children do, but how, and in what context. "If we could say that understanding a child is like unraveling a mystery, then taking records is the gathering of clues," they tell us. This information allows providers to make discoveries in regard to why children do what they do.

The book offers hundreds of examples of specific situations of observing a child, such as: during routines, while using materials, their behavior with other children, their behavior during dramatic play, their general play, their relationships with adults, and their cognitive functioning, among others. There are multiple lists of questions for the provider to ask themselves during an observation to help them get the most details. There is also a chapter discussing the use of language as a tool in recording, showing how the use of verbs, adverbs and adjectives can lead to a more accurate account of a child's behavior.

There is also discussion on a child's temperament and culture and how it affects their behavior. Other chapter topics include: recording developing language and emergent literacy, observing and recording behavior of infants and toddlers and recording the behavior of children for whom there are special concerns.

Finally, the book shows how to pull all this observation together to find patterns, and create a summary and interpretation to be used when discussing a child's progress with parents.

Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children is a valuable tool for family child care providers looking to enhance their curriculum through individual observation and recording of children's behavior.

One of the joys of reading is losing yourself in a good story. The fact that the story is based on truth makes it even more delectable. Set in the Victorian era, the women of the Raub family become connected to women of all ages as they rise to the challenges of life's trials with God's grace and human fortitude. My spirit was enriched as I rapidly turned the pages of this remarkable book.

Written by 2004 Gold Medallion finalist Mark Tabb, Own Your Faith: The Adventure of Following Christ in College is a guide for college students to the sticky problems of living out one's religious beliefs in an increasingly secular postmodern world. Chapters discuss learning to embrace faith in God through thinking for oneself, rather than simply accepting beliefs spoon-fed by others; the value of forming connections; preparing for "the inevitable storms that will confront your faith"; and much more. "The difference between being told what to think and learning how to think is the difference between a faith that is your own and one that is nothing more than an extension of those who programmed your mind. How can you tell which you have? You've already experienced the difference in your relationship with every math student's best friend, Bob, aka, Mr. Back of the Book. When brains lock up and an answer is nowhere to be found, Bob comes to the rescue... as long as the problem has an odd number." Highly recommended for Christians of all walks of life, not just those about to begin college.

I read this book in one sitting. It is a must read for any high school graduate - not just those going to college. Tabb does a great job identifying the strange feelings that everyone experiences as they transition from high school to adulthood, and the process of making a faith that has been shared by many - thier own. Parents and youth pastors should read this book as well!

This book really captures the spirit and essence of what is the Penn State Blue Band. I've marched in the band for 3 seasons and have, at times, tried to describe the exhiliration of the pregame show, or the dedication and pride I felt when I donned the uniform. This book does that perfectly. As years pass, and my memories fade of my experiences in The Blue Band, I will have this book to call upon, and help relive some of thos moments.

Excellent Historical Account of a Great Band

Man what a book!!!! Fortunately for me, I was a student at PSU when this game was played. Some of the players were in my classes and some of them I knew on a first name basis.

This book took me back to a time when life was simpler and simple satisfactions, like football, at the time meant little, but over time they mean a lot more.

The author takes you into the game. Not just what you saw on TV and how the announcers made it look, but really takes you into the pre-game, how the Fiesta Bowl people did what they did to get this game played on Jan 2.

He takes you on the field with each of the players 20 years later as they relive the greatest college game that they ever played. Even the insights from the Miami players makes this book totally complete.

I couldn't put it down and am glad I bought it. I gave it to my Brother and he read it in about 4 days.

Great book, great story

This almanac is an extremely useful tool for people like me, teenagers who are wanting to go to college, but don't know where to go. This book gives a few useful facts for thousands of colleges and universities and tells you where to write for more information once you have narrowed it down. It is especially helpful when you still have a year or two to plan. I would reccommend it to anyone who is still unsure about where they want to go to college.

Review Date: 2003-03-13
This book is an institutional history of the College of Pharmacy of the University of Cincinnati prepared in commemoration of its 150th anniversary. Begun in 1850 as a private school of pharmacy under the sponsorship of the Cincinnati Pharmaceutical Association, the school remained independent until its merger with the University of Cincinnati in 1954. The book is divided into eight chapters, the first four of which deal with the independent school, and the last four (organized by College Dean) with its history after the merger. The book concludes with six appendices listing students, faculty, etc., a bibliography, and a section of notes. As is to be expected, the book deals largely with administration, faculty, and building changes, though the authors' also make some attempt to trace changes in the curriculum and to set their story within the context of the city's history and important developments in the history of pharmacy as a whole. Indeed, each chapter concludes with a time line, summarizing both local and national developments.
Though books of this type are seldom of interest to readers who are not among the faculty, students, or alumni of the school itself, they are of vital importance as the first stage of documentation for larger, more generalized histories. And, as any one who has ever worked on such a history knows, they involve an incredible amount of painstaking research to track down names and dates. The authors are to be congratulated on a job well done and the College of Pharmacy for its willingness to support this historical endeavor.
As the book's acknowledgements indicate, among the rich archival sources available to the authors were the wonderful collections of the University of Cincinnati Medical Heritage Center, assembled over the last 30 years by Billie Broaddus, and strongly supported by the College of Pharmacy. Consequently, it is ironic that this book's publication should be followed by the announcement that the University has seen fit to close down the center and disperse its holdings - a tragic event, not only for the Cincinnati medical and pharmaceutical community, but for historians in general.

Book Brought Back Memories of U.C. College of Pharmacy

Review Date: 2004-07-12
As a graduate of the U.C. College of Pharmacy, I found this book most interesting and memory jogging. It is a great undertaking that chronicals the history of the oldest school of pharmacy west of the Allegheny mountains. The important book took a massive amount of work to compile, with the help of scores of individuals who are credited in the book. The period from 1850 when Cincinnati College of Pharmacy was founded, through joining with U.C., to the offering of the Pharm D degree is covered. History is divided into chapters to show the earliest years (1850-1871) to the Fennel Years, depression and war years, to the 4 "Dean" years. A complete register of students by year and name, along with their degrees from 1873 to 2000 is provided !! It is fascinating to review how the practice of pharmacy has changed dramatically over this period and how the curriculum has been updated to meet the changes, challenges, and the needs of patients. 14 pages of detailed notes regarding the book are provided. Anyone believing that pharmacy is not a dynamic ever-changing profession will discover the truth in this volume. Most intersting is the chronicalling of pharmacy education during its infancy all the way to the 21st century. The University of Cincinnati periods are titled with the Deans' names: The Kowalewski Years, The Glasser Years, The Warner Years, and the new century with the Acosta years. There is a wealth of information in this book's 235 pages, along with some interesting pictures. They brought back memories to me personally, from the mid to late 50's, with Dean Joe teaching the freshmen "History of Pharmacy." Dean Joe personally interviewed each student prior to admission, and knew each student by name, and the pharmacy where he or she worked. This book is most informative, interesting, and well worth reading.

A spectacular book! The photographs are beautiful and are reproduced exquisitely Although this is a retrospective book, a number of the images are published here for the first time. Although I own most of Tragers books, I wouldn't be without this deluxe volume. Seeing Trager's lifes work provides insight into the artists iconic, expressionistic images.

A complete overview of a life in photography. A superb, comprehensive book full of forty years of Tragers landmark, expressionistic photographs with excellent essays and an interesting interview. This book is a model for all that a retrospective book should be. Trager has a distinctly personal vision. He has made a unique contribution to dance and architectural photography. He deserves the critical plaudits he has always received.

"Naming the Elephant"

Review Date: 2004-10-04
Toni McNaron spent 30 years in the classroom at the University of Minnesota. During that time, she looked directly into the varied faces of homophobia. Most times, she looked without blinking.
In "Poisoned Ivy" McNaron, to paraphrase a comment she makes in the book, names the elephant in the living room of academia. She addresses, head on, the issues of blatant homophobia and heterosexism which are faced by lesbian and gay academics on a daily basis.
As an educator at the high school level interested in lesbian and gay scholarship, McNaron's book has remained near and dear to me; I have read and re - read its pages repeatedly. When I first read it, I lost sleep attempting to complete it. The writing is engrossing and (although I do not as of yet teach at the college level) very familiar.
"Poisoned Ivy, arguably McNaron's magnus opus, is strongly recommended for all gays and lesbians who are members of the work force. For those working in the field of education, it is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ. McNaron's story and the story of the other acadmeics who participated in her survey, is the story of thousands upon thousands of people in this country who continue to suffer in silence.

Must Read for all Academics

Review Date: 1999-07-03
As a woman starting her own academic career soon, I found this book wonderfully helpful. It has given me a deeper appreciation and respect for lesbians and gay men who struggle with how out they can be on their campuses. It has also made me think about how I will approach and respect gay and lesbian issues in my own classroom. Just as straight people may look at their collegues and students and wonder who may be gay or lesbian, gays and lesbians are looking at straight people and trying to figure out who they can safely come out to.

McNaron's work also emphaszied the vital connection between our personal lives and our academic work. When the two are painfully separated from each other, they both suffer. Her story, and many of the others she includes, demonstrate how much more fruitful and satisfying your work can be, for yourself and the larger acadmic community, when your personal and academic lives can work together. This is a lesson all of us, regardless of sexual orientation, can learn from.
