"Horse Schools" is amazing. It details horsemanship educational schools internationally by the discipline, costs, degrees offered, location, etc... It is easy to follow and has saved me much time because this book has done the initial searching for me.

This book is GREAT as far as helping narrow down what schools offer the degree or program that your college-bound student is looking for. It's a fabulous resource for parents as it lists tuition costs, etc., all in one place - no more searching websites, calling schools only to find out you can't afford it. I would recommend finding a book that helps you and your child narrow down their field of interest first, though, since it really doesn't go into detail what the different degrees mean to "lay persons."

I bought this book for a class I was taking. It provided a very complete information about the topic. Although I consider that the information was complete I still think that it needed to talk more about higher education for African-American women. The book focused a lot only on white women.

This book documents the history of women in education. It is a wonderful resource for those of us who did not run across the obstacles that our mothers and our grandmothers did when they pursued education. I feel that this should be a required text for all women in higher education instituitons.

I used the book as an optional text in a course on the history of higher education. It adds a dimension to the topic that is missed by most text books-yes there were women involved in the history of higher education!!! While most texts mention women, they tend to highlight the unique rather than the norm. This book does an excellent job of explaining how the average American woman faired in higher education beginning in the early 19th century.

I didn't buy this to pass any tests. I have been reading David McCullough's book John Adams and watching the DVDs too. And I wanted a way to "move around" within US Revolutionary War history quickly when I had questions about what was happening (or had or was going to happen). So regular history books would be way too detailed. I got what I wanted with this book: Helpful "Timelines" and short essays that cover the main events of each phase and period of the war that can be read quickly and are well-written and hence easy reading too. Also, it's great to have the whole sweep of US history in one book that I can dive into at any point and not only get interested, but invest a little time to get a good understanding of what was happening. So it's useful as a reference book too.

An Amazing Book that Will Gain You 100 Points!!!

I bought this book in May to prepare for the June SAT II in US History and it was amazing!!! Before opening the book, I took a practice test through the OFFICIAL SAT SUBJECT TEST BOOK published by the College Board. I scored a 650 or 660, or something low like that. I was a little agitated because I bought a book for the AP US History Exam and read through that entire tome. Anyway, after recieving the book 2 weeks before the test, I read it cover to cover and took all of the 3 practice tests. Though the highest I recieved on the practice tests was a 690, I somehow pulled a 750 on the real SAT II. This book definately helped a lot and went into great dept on post-WWI. The main reason to purchase this book definately lies in the chapter reviews. They are great and give you the exact knowledge you will need for the test. Also, with review questions at the end of each chapter, the knowledge stays in your head and you retain all of the information. Two of the chapter review questions were word for word on the actual test! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to recieve a 700+, because with just a small amount of backround knowledge in US History you can learn all that it takes to ace the exam!!! A+, 5 stars, and my highest recommendation!!!

Hey it worked for me, It will work for you!!!!

I will make this short and sweet.
I bought both this book as well as the barons sat US history book.
This one dominates in that it makes it 10 times easier to understand. Barron's has a lot of unnecessary info but it is much more thorough in basically all the reading. BUTT it is many times more boring and often very hard to read and understand.
I read this book about 3 times (takes about like 3-4 hours, short read!!), did the tests and skimmed over the barrons and amazingly got a 760!!! it was weird cus on the practice tests in this book, i score no higher than 720. the barrons tests are RIDICULOUSly hard!!!! might be good just for info review. If your like me, where if the reading gets to complex then you tune out, get this one!!! Barrons is unnecessarily cus i did not learn anything from that to be honest..
*make sure you memorize the ammendments, acts, court cases, and important election dates......which leads to (down)

BUY the sparknotes flash cards!! They work pretty. welll i thought soo.
good luck kids!!!

I read about 45 pages @ my desk and then had to go home (39 miles), read a few more pages, went to bridge club, came back and finished about ONE am. Could not put the book down.

I was an ASU football fan before having the pleasure to read this book. I am now a huge App State Mountaineer football fan, and a great admirer of Jerry Moore. Dick Brown does a fabulous job of chronicling Coach Moore's life and the principles that drive him. The unique thing about this book is that Brown began interviewing Moore and writing this book the year before ASU won their first national championship, so he was there, writing this book, while history was happening, during ASU's run to three straight national championships. I highly recommend this book to football fans and to readers who are looking for a truly inspiring story.

Great Insight and Down to Earth Advice

This is an essential read for NEW presidents. I also would recommend it to ALL presidents. Although the focus is on the smaller, more "hands-on" institution; my experience as a past president at small institution ($48M annual budget), as well as a larger one ($300M per year); leads me to believe that the principles introduced here apply well to BOTH.

The author strikes a good balance between defining the specific and environmental complexities of the president's job, and presenting practical, straightforward best practice. I especially liked what I percieved to be an underlying theme of how to deal with change-- such as not coming in as Mr/Ms fix-it (my words)-- a common mistake often made by new presidents.

The book is well written, experientially based, and darn good advice.

This work is packed with insight into the position of college president and takes into account more of the aspects of presiding than many of the other books on this subject I've read. Its emphasis is upon people, culture, interactions, and relationships - precisely those fundamentals a college president has to understand and grapple with in pursuit of excellence in learning. Dr. Peterson's suggestion to see oneself in the "middle" of the organization makes good sense. His knowledge of leadership and vision, given his years of service, certainly shine through. A brief but weighty read.....

As a new college president, I am grateful to Harry Peterson for the observations and insights he has shared in Leading a Small College. Dr. Peterson's book has given me a number of ideas to consider. Especially helpful are the strategies he suggests for dealing with the issues I am confronting as a new president. His conversational style and practical bent make this a book I will return to regularly. Anyone seeking a cogent guide to the college presidency should read Dr. Peterson's book.

As a former college president, I found this one of the most practical guides to success in the presidency I have read. It should be read by any first-time president. It is a book that one will reread every year or two as a continuing president to keep focused on the truly important issues. It was written by a person who clearly was successful as a president and presents a helpful and practical guide to the many areas of conflict and decision a president faces. I wish it had been available when I became president.

I bought the book just because I am a fan, but I am very pleased with its overall quality. It's a well-made hardcover book with durable sewn binding. Printed on thick, glossy paper, the large color photographs look bright and extremely sharp. The book includes Woody Durham's broadcast on 2 CDs. The book is not organized into game-by-game stories like the News and Observer's book. Instead, it has two main sections. First is a section of essays on various topics like "Workdays in Maui," "Senior Day," and "Two Steps to St. Louis." Second is a section of essays by all five members of the coaching staff and eight of the regular players. The book also includes an essay by Dean Smith, a record of the season, and list of awards and honors.

There are two great things about this book. The first being the freshness of the information. When a team wins a championship, the win is almost covered to death so to speak, so I was definately pleasantly suprised when the book contained many stories that I had not yet heard. Secondly, and probably the best thing about the book was the complete Tarheel Sports Network radio broadcast of the Championship game and the post-game press conferences. This book is a must for any Tarheel fan, and the CD is something you will listen to over and over.

Let's End America's Dirty Little Secret: Widespread Functional Illiteracy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-29
Functional illiterates suffer very serious physical, emotional, mental, medical, and financial problems. The most accurate studies of English functional illiteracy proved that the 48.7% of individual U.S. adults, in the two lowest of five literacy levels, earned significantly less than poverty level wages and 31.0% of their families were in poverty! We do not see this suffering because illiterates are very good at hiding, there are more than one employed adults in the family, and they get government and private help. In 2008, illiteracy costs everyone --- even good readers --- an average of $5186 per year. Students in over 98% of alphabetic languages except English become fluent readers in three months or less. Most U.S. adults who've learned to read English well required at least two years because every word in their reading vocabulary must be learned one at a time since there are NO invariable rules of spelling and there are 1,768 ways of spelling 40 sounds in English! Nothing done since 1755 has significantly improved English literacy. The solution: spell words the way they sound --- the way the rest of the world does!

How to get this accepted
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-27
The quickest way to get this accepted world-wide is to build an English to NuEnglish translator into the Firefox web browser. Push a button, and the browser goes into phonetic mode.

All someone has to do is submit the darned thing to the open source project, and it'll get into the hands of about 100 million people in a few weeks.

It is not an entirely trivial undertaking... A simple dictionary obviously will not do the trick, because of the bizarre patterns latent in English.... Some kind of semantic filter algorithms would have be developed (and remain in a constant state of development....) to get the translations right. However -- suddenly about 300 million people would have access to the web in "English", and could drag and drop any form of computerized English into the web browser and be able to read 99% of it. Every English speaking illiterate and functional illiterate in the world would be screaming at the top of their lungs in praises of glory.

Someone really should organize this....

A must-read if you care about society

This book, I have come to learn, is the first one to both present the alarming extent and consequences of illiteracy in the U.S. AND to propose a real solution to the problem. If the author had laid out only the problem, the reader would be left depressed. If Cleckler had given only the solution, the reader would wonder, "Why bother?" But the 2 together make a solid case.

There's an abundance of documentation and detail, in places too much. Just skip over the heavier tables and graphs. Better too much detail than not enough. I don't agree with Cleckler about renaming the letters of the alphabet, or including 35 pages of sample text in NuEnglish when 5 pages would have been plenty. And that sample text showed inconsistent and sloppy use of NuEnglish, but that criticism is more of a quibble when considering the scope of his work. We need to roll up our shirt sleeves and start applying the solution!

A must read for everyone as it affects everyone!!!

As one who has been on a 30 year journey from illiterate to author, I was stunned by this book. Bob hits the nail on the head and it is an incredible read full of facts and solutions, which blow your mind to the problems of illiteracy and how it affects everyone.

This is not just a problem for the U.S.A but any English speaking country and for those learning our language. It is a book you have to read from cover to cover and as you question, Bob gives you solution leaving you wondering why governments will not implement ideas that would benefit us all.

Bob also reveals the feelings of those affected by illiteracy, things we would not dare confess, yet we should, if we are to get support and change to this epidemic. I would highly recommend this book to everyone, as it affects everyone. I would especially recommend this book as a must read to authors of any genre, as it will answer why there is a decrease in readers, which we can do something about.

Hope this book gets on Oprah!!! And in the hands of those who have the power to implement change!!!

Tony Bates writes an immensely practical guide for coping with changing technological needs and developing a rational and strategic process for making sound decisions. As a manager in a university department, I appreciated a resource that focused on the academic environment. In addition, I think the issues he raises and the process he proposes have relevance for other educational institutions and training facilities, especially those in the public or non-profit sector which tend to be financially conservative by nature. Bates offers best practices and expert advice on factors to address when confronting technological change, especially as it relates to teaching. As he points out, technology is a means to an end, so in order to best manage technology one must be aware of the inevitable impact technology has in society and, consequently, position the institution within changing markets and needs. Major investments in technological infrastructure must be paired with a corresponding vision of the organization. This book is about the art of managing cultural change as much as it is about incorporating new tools, taking into account the human factors and the hazards implicit therein.

The format of the book is also helpful. It begins with an executive summary, provides concluding summaries at the end of each chapter, provides a balanced perspective on the pros/cons to choices that the institution must make, and presents real-world case studies to give a flavor of principles in action. I highly recommend this reading for anyone in an administrative or teaching capacity who finds himself or herself faced with the difficult choices inherent in a technology transformation. The only thing that would have increased the value of the book for me is a deeper discussion and emphasis on the role of the library or technology center within this transformation.
