Great pictorial treasury of Lucille Ball's life and career

This is Cindy de la Hoz's first book, and judging from this and her next two books (_Platinum Fox_ on Marilyn Monroe and _Lana_ on Lana Turner, written with Turner's daughter Cheryl Crane), de la Hoz is going to be a major writer on classic films in the years to come. I've got all three of her books and expect to keep buying them as long as she keeps on putting out work as good as this.

As with her next two books, _Lucy at the Movies_ is a substantial, high-quality hardback, with the accent on outstanding pictures in both color and B&W, many of them not previously published. De la Hoz begins with a good, concise biographical section and then goes on to the meat of the book, a film-by-film discussion of Lucy's movie career (again, accompanied by numerous first-rate photographs). De la Hoz carefully researched this book, with extensive endnotes and a long bibiliography.

I only own one book on Lucille Ball so far, but I'm glad it's this one!

A True Must Have

This book is truly amazing. I am 47 and have been a huge fan of Lucille Ball since I was young. HERE'S LUCY was on prime time then, both other shows were in constant reruns and MAME was released - a huge treat. I have always loved the whole package that is Lucille Ball - not just Lucy - and this book glorifies exactly that.

Lucille Ball became a legend and a never equalled comedienne when she became Lucy on the infamous I LOVE LUCY. Of course this is her tour de force from herr entire career but many don't know that Lucy was around for decades before I LOVE LUCY with an expansive film career. She was considered the QUEEN OF THE B MOVIES. There was some true quality work here like LURED and the truly exceptional THE BIG STREET. She also made many films after becoming Lucy.

This book is not only a beautiful coffee table book which it indeed is. There are hundreds of amazing pictures both in black and white and color - candids plus pictures from the films. But this book is also a true encyclopedia of the film history of Lucille Ball. Every film she made from the beginning to MAME and even her final television movie STONE PILLOW are thoroughly researched. There is an in depth synopsis of each film, wonderful pictures and multiple critics reviews of each piece. It is priceless.

There is also a full biography and a detail of all the film shorts she did before she was in her first film ROMAN SCANDALS. So to sum it up - this book is the rare exception. It is a true beautiful coffee table book filled with beautiful pictures but it also provides the fully researched in depth film history of Lucille Ball which has never been tackled like this before.

For all you Lucy fans this book is a must and you will learn how much more there was to this multi-faceted artist. You will run out to get and watch all these films to discover the true Lucille Ball. But this book is not only for Lucy fans for Lucille Ball is one of the greatest artists ever and this book is her true film history. It is a must for any entertainment library as well.

But for all you true Lucy fans - rejoice!! You will devour the beautiful pictures and all the info on the film career of the glorious Lucille ball. Enjoy!

To start off this is a great book and not being much of a reader myself I really love this one. It has great large pictures, hard to find pictures and the words are fairly large in this one also. Not being overly large like a kids reader but being the perfect size! But not only this, it has a lot of informative info aobut all of Lucy's movies that she has appeared in and also a despription of each movie. This is great because if you have never seen any of Lucille Ball's films you will get a thrill out of reading about all of the movies as well as jotting them down and looking online to buy them on DVD. This book has so much more also as well as the biography of Lucille Ball and a whole lot more! This is not a boring book but a nice fun book to read and to also make you want to read as well as some great info about the bright and talented star. The book itself is very large and very well made, as well as being thick. It looks like it costs about $50 it is so big and thick but I bought this through a book store in my local town for $29.99 which on the back of the book is the retail value so Amazon has a GREAT price!

I'm 16 years old now but when I was little my father read "Maia" to me every single day. It is one of my all time favourite books. It's perfect for any kid who loves dinosaurs, just like I did. The pictures are great and the story is wonderful. I still have my copy and keep it in my room so it's always nearby for whenever I want to read it again.

My almost 6 year-old daughter loved Maia and when her teacher read it in school during "Dinosaur Week," she came home asking if we could buy it. It is the story of Maia, the Maiasaur,of her growing up and learning about the world outside the nest. The story tells of the wonder and fright as she discovers she must make it on her own, that she must become independent. It is the story of Maia becoming a mother herself and knowing that while she must nurture her baby dinosaurs, she must also move them toward independence so that they can survive on their own. The illustrations are fabulous and the story teaches children about dinosaurs and about growing up in a caring and thoughtful manner. Beautifully written and illustrated.

Its amazing that this book was written by a man. This is a must read for every female especially those who take the many freedoms they have today for granted.Misogynistic practices, behaviors and attitudes are entrenched in many cultures(some more extreme than others)and it would be wise to take note that freedoms were fought for(not just generously handed over by kind hearted men)and that we have made a little progress in some areas but still have a long way to go to eliminate deeply rooted prejudices against women everywhere.

So much beauty and horrific honesty in this book with prose like poetry, I find it difficult to some up all I've learned from this extrodinary book in a single reveiw. But for those of you who are considering buying it I strongly urge you to do so - it will change your perspective on our world and your own place in it. I, personally, plan to purchase a copy of this book for every womyn in my family and share this wealth of knowledge - which reads easily and makes it hard to put down. A moving and disturbing look at the other half of the human race - Womynkind. You are a fool to let this beauty and this history pass you by. Like I said, it will change your world and your view of your place in it - be you womyn or be you man. Best book I've ever read...ever. I'm so very thankful a MAN WROTE THIS BOOK so that other men who might be threatened by an account of crimes against Womynkind have no way to bash the author as "a man hater" or "old bitter spinster" as they did with my second most favorite book "Are Men Necessary" by Maureen Dowd. Goddess bless the womyn behind the man that brought this book into being. All my gratitude and my future generations gratitude - for this book will no doubt be passed down thru generations in my family. Thank you for giving us a voice, Jack Holland, and rest in honor as well as in peace!

This is a terrific book. Very informative and well written. It's making me a little angry though as it drives home the fact that some women around the world have such terribly tough lives. Even in western society there are still so many inequalities. We should all be aware of them so that they can be eventually overcome.

So, maybe I'm just *old*.

This book didn't exactly rock my world. In full disclosure, I am a feminist (meaning, I don't think anyone's better or worse than anyone else based on what's between their legs), and have been reading feminist books and theory for a long time. The reviews of this book made me think, maybe, a REALLY long time. It was a very readable (I hesitate to say 'enjoyable') study over the long span of human history about the institutional and cultural biases against women. Holland is right: it's outrageous that 51% of the human race has been discriminated against for all of written history, but there's been no major outrage. It's accepted as 'common sense'. Just think of your reaction to me stating I was a feminist. I'm sure someone reading this review conjured an image of a hairy legged flannel shirt wearing manhater. Why? Because 'we all know' that women who complain are weird.

Holland's honestly at his best with the more modern events. He mumbles some facts--all crusaders were male (ummm, Eleanor of Aquitaine?) he says. Also, he seems to think Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for witchcraft. She was sentenced, actually, for the 'crime' of refusing to wear women's 'proper' clothing. I could go on, but you get the idea. Little squibs that detracted from my enjoyment of his historical broad view, but nothing that would directly contradict or nullify his claims (the Joan of Arc thing would have actually *strengthened* his point). But, it's a huge task to cram the whole of history into under 300 pages, so we'll cut him a break.

The reason this isn't five stars for me is that really, there's nothing NEW here. If you've read _History of Women_ or _History of Their Own_ or _Chalice and the Blade_, etc, there's really not much that's going to make paradigms shift. If you've read current feminists like Faludi or Kilbourne's work on advertising, again, nothing particularly new. So, if you read feminist books as a hobby, most of this book might be...unsatisfying. If you're new to the stuff, this is as good an introduction as I can think of. And his coverage of recent history, ranging from the Taliban to abortion clinics in the US, is quite good. It's useful for bringing together between two covers the 'cliff's notes' of historical feminism.

If you would like to have your thoughts stirred up more, in the same 'grand overview of history' scheme Leonard Shlain's _Alphabet Versus the Goddess_ is my pick.

Powerful, Essential Reading

I agree with other reviewers--Jack Holland's book should be part of the world's curriculum. In MISOGYNY, THE WORLD'S OLDEST PREJUDICE, Holland writes an intelligent, well-researched, and gripping narrative, covering the many manifestations of misogyny from ancient to modern times, in the religious, social, scientific, and political spheres. Holland clearly illustrates the dangers of the two-valued orientation, with its appeal to the dogmatic, who have persecuted women throughout human history.

Beyond the heartbreaking and horrifying examples of misogynistic cruelty, Holland presents an insightful analysis of the core of this oldest of prejudices and offers a glimmer of hope for its transcendence.

This was fantastic and everything I expected. I was familiar with Pekar from his appearances on Letterman in the 80s and could not locate the graphic novellas at that time. When the movie came out, I began my search again and someone informed me the collections were on Amazon.

If you can't love Harvey Pekar, you can't love anyone. He is a lovely man, with as many neuroses as the rest of us, who listens and watches and reports on the people and world around him. His kindness and caring for the people who populate his world - these are real stories with real people Harvey knows, including his family- is obvious and makes reading his work a delight. I found the Pekar books to be like peanuts - I kept wanting more and more and hate to finish one - unless I have another ready to read. Harvey's 'comics" are the first graphic novels I've spent time reading, and I am hooked. The drawings add immeasurably to the story - a format I would like to see developed further in the future.

This new collection of Harvey Pekar's quotidian American Splendor comic is not only an excellent introduction for those new to his work; it's also a great anthology for those of us who have read and loved him for years (especially since, toward the end of the volume, some of his very early stuff is collected).

Some of the most gemutliche, warmest pieces in the collection feature characters from Pekar's VA hospital days. Toby is present several times, but my personal favorite of all the VA panels is "Walkin' an' Talkin," where in just two pages Pekar captures the warmth, humor, and generosity of his co-workers. Three stories beautifully speak to Pekar's paranoia and his obsessive-compulsiveness: "Hysteria," "Lost and Found" (a story which introduced me to the novelist Italo Svevo, whom I've since come to really love), and "Time Flies...Time Drags." Three more stories speak to Pekar's painful history with David Letterman, including a documentary on his final appearance on the Letterman Show in which he tried to let the world know that GE, ABC's owner, engaged in morally dubious practices. (If you get the chance to watch any of the Letterman/Pekar exchanges, it's a real experience. Letterman comes across as such a smarmy yuppie, who really seems to delight in trying to humiliate Pekar.)

Also included in the volume is one of the delightful oral histories of Cleveland's Jewish life in the early twentieth century, illustrated by R. Crumb, and three single page stories illustrated in Drew Friedman's wonderful faux-photographic style.

But there are also a couple of disconcerting stories: "Broken Window" and "Festering." Both of them suggest that Harvey was attacked on at least a couple of occasions by an out-of-control father. Could this be true? Just a couple of years ago in a radio interview, Harvey described his father in quite different terms.

A great collection from a guy who walks an' talks the ordinary life.

Please welcome back Harvey Pekar

This is the second American Splendor Anthology. It features material that was written after the first Anthology came out, plus some older stuff that was left out of the first book. If you like Harvey Pekar's stuff, you will love this book. For people who became interested in Harvey because of the movie based on his life, you will be interested to find the comics based on his David Letterman appearances here. Also, Toby and the "Revenge of the Nerds" story is featured here. For Harvey's hardcore fans, there are some rarities here, such as pre-American Splendor comics from the early '70s, and Harvey's Forwards to other people's books. Buy this book, Harvey can use the money.

Seinfeld, a show about nothing? Pbbbb. Never thought it was that special. Heard about this guy named Harvey Pekar who writes comics about well, nothing. Not nothing really but ordinary, mundane everyday things. Saw the movie, liked it, picked up the Anthology at the library. Hooked. Want more. More. The first friggin' page had me hooked, the old fella telling Harvey about the rag peddlers cry. 'PAAAY-PER REGGS'. The thing is I don't think Harvey needs every dollar now. Between the movie and his work being reissued and the new found interest in him and his comics, he's probably laughing, or brooding, all the way to the bank. Good for you Harvey Pekar!

We had dinner at the Palm Restaurant in Chicago. Loved it. When I saw this cookbook and read the reviews on the steaks- I just had to order and see just how to cook the steaks the reviewers were raving about. We have tried many different steaks using this process. They are fantastic! No longer does my husband have to stand out at the grill in the freezing winter temperatures or the hot humid summer temperatures. We often opt for this indoor method. I'll be buying more of these cookbooks for gifts!

After an enjoyable dinner experience at The Palm Restaurant in Las Vegas, I thought about purchasing the restaurant's cookbook as a souvenir remembrance of our Las Vegas trip in January 2007. The book arrived last week and I prepared beef tenderloin steaks using the book's steak recipe. Wow, this is the only recipe I will now use for cooking steaks. I've already bookmarked several seafood dishes for the coming week. Buy the book, it's worth the price just for the steak preparation recipe.

When people ask me about a book that has changed my life I now tell them about this one.

I used to think I knew how to cook a steak. I had no idea. I takes a long time (which is mostly waiting, not much working, so buy some wine too) but it is definitely worth it. I've never been to the Palm so they probably do it even better there, but for me the New York strip I made following this recipe was just about the best meal I've ever had! Sorry mom.

Buy this book right now. Pick up a couple of NY Strips when you get it. Follow the directions exactly. Write a thank you note to the publisher.

The side dishes, especially the creamed spinach and the mushrooms are also top notch. I may get to the pasta and the rest eventually, but for now I'm eating an unhealthy amount of steak.

This book is an easy read with a common down -to- earth simplicity that strikes at the very root of your heart. The authors Irish wit and love of his fellow man (in whatever background they may be from) is so very apparent that it will make you think twice before judging another human being. The stories are short, diverse and sweet. This is a must read for anyone that needs a lift and a different perspective on the every day comings and goings of life. This little book of gems left such an impression on me that I ordered 3 more copies of it and sent them for Christmas presents. Thank you Patrick Hannon for your humor and wit and keep on writing!!

Father Pat has a unique way of allowing the reader to experience the love of God in everyday, human lives. I laughed, I cried, I marveled, I prayed during my reading of this book. Father Pat also allows us insight into how to accept all of God's beings with dignity, humor and grace, no matter how challenging the situation. I liked how each story was in itself an encounter with God's mercy and love. This book is worth several reads!!

Anyone who likes a good story should like this book. It is a delightful and enlightening work that I have been recommending to my friends. Patrick Hannon, a young Holy Cross priest, generously shares with us tales of his family and his life. They are warm and engaging stories in themselves and Hannon is a great storyteller. And in his faith he reveals to us another dimension of reality -- that of prayer which is laced through the fabric of ordinary life, usually not recognized or recognizable as prayer until a book like this points it out. You will enjoy the book, you will want to pass it on.

Pat is truly a man with a tremendous spirit...and a very talented writer. I read the library copy and quickly bought a copy...it is definately a book you will want to read again and again.

You don't normally think of spirituality as a "fun read" but this small book can put a whole new spin on the concept of relating to God and when is it, exactly, that we are praying. It is engaging, poignant, thought-provoking (in a positive, non-troubling way) and conveys an optimism about how to live and experience life. I recommend this book to everyone who believes that life has a larger purpose --- if you take its meaning to heart it can make every day of your life a fair bit richer. I received this book as a Christmas present and, in turn, have now given it out as a gift to many of my closest friends and family members --- getting unanimously positive comments in return. This one is really worth it.

What a wonderful, ingenious book. I am shocked this book isn't more widely known, particularly in homeschooling circles (at least, the ones I moved in), where the wealth of creative ideas for making construction toys out of common, inexpensive, everyday materials would seem right up most homeschoolers' alleys. These materials can be used to make simple, elegant, and incredibly appealing projects.

There is also an excellent discussion of structures, both in nature and man-made, of buildings, of bridges and towers and so on.

It is all absolutely fascinating and I'm going to plan a class for the spring using this book as the spine.

Well worth the money. An amazing resource.

Aprons & Icons is for vintage clothing fans and for those who have a warm spot in their hearts for the unsung heros of the wardrobe. Documenting everything from groovy '60's styles to early 1900's workaday models, the book is well researched and beautifully presented. It makes a great gift. Each time I open it I discover something new.

I just loved Joyce Chaney's book, Aprons:Icons of the American Home. It is the only book to date on the history of the american apron. The photographs are beautiful and the content is complete. Every page brings a memory of mom, grandmother or an aunt. This is a must for anyone interested in american icons, aprons or vintage clothing.

This book is full of large, colorful photos of many beautiful aprons. It is also filled with pertinent information for anyone interested in vintage aprons. Reading it makes me feel "home again." I've been an apron collector for years, and I had the opportunity to view Ms. Cheney's apron exhibit in my town's museum recently. It was fabulous! This book is my new favorite! Thanks, Ms. cheney!

This book will take you back through vivid memories of aprons for cooking, home, and just fun. It also inspires a fashion sense because these aprons are timeless and fit today's world as much as yesterday's. Thank you Mme. Cheney for a great book and one that fills a void in the history of fashion and textiles.

As a quilter and vintage fabric lover I found this book to be a beautiful feast. The photos are large and clear, all aprons shown are displayed over period dresses, or on their own. This book is fabulous for collectors, or people like me that love to recreate vintage designs. I hope aprons come back, but even if they don't I will still wear them. This book is very timely, and it does deserve five stars. One word of cation, it isn't a pattern book, there are no projects, or patterns. It is simply aprons, in all their glory. A great coffee table book!

I bought this for a college friend of mine and she absolutley loved it. The only problem we saw was that some of the shot combos have really obscure liquors that you cannot get at a normal liquor store.

Bought it for a friend who could really use it while on the road to share with others and expand his alcohol erudition. Not sure how far he is yet in the alphabetically-listed line up.

Easy to use - all the shot names are in alphabetical order and directions are simple. You don't have to be a certified mixologist to understand how to make them.

A coach for the ages

Anyone of a certain generation - i.e., baby boomer - with a particular interest in long distance running and track & field will love this book. Bill Bowerman was a one-of-a-kind and the world is a better place because of him. A tough coach, a real driver of men, he was one of those unique individuals able to get the best out of his athletes, stuff they themselves (Moore included) didn't think they were capable of.

I was a high school distance runner back in the late 60s and we all knew Bowerman's reputation and admired him and his teams. Even our cross-country coach emulated his training techniques. Heck, we all figured everyone knew who Bill Bowerman was.

This book, for me and others like me, is a great trip down nostalgia lane - as well as providing lots of behind-the-scenes details and information that I found fascinating. Great read!

Loved it, BUT...

This was a fascinating read. However, I must take Mr. Moore to task over his writings about Steve Prefontaine's accident. Yes, Mr. Moore, you never met Karl Bylund, because if you had, you would have understood exactly why Karl would have been no help if he had stayed to lift the car. This kid was all skin and bones; everyone who knew him would attest to this fact.
Your lack of complete research has produced an unfair, false and mean judgement.

My sister already has a copy and loves it so much she wouldn't let my mother borrow it. So, I copy as a gift for my mom and she can't put it down. For anyone who is a runner and loves reading about the history of the Oregon running team and the history of Nike, this is the book for you. This book has history and sports. Enjoy!!

Great Man, Great Book

I knew that Bowerman coached Pre and had an influence on Nike and the jogging boom of the 70s, but Moore's biography fills in all the gaps from Medford to Mexico City. Bowerman's life reads like a case-closing defense of the Great Man theory of history, at least for track & field. His accomplishments are truly remarkable and well-rendered by Moore.

This is an invaluable read for anyone involved with coaching. The first chapters on Bowerman's ancestors also offer some insights into Oregon life in the small towns in the late 1800's early 1900's. Finally, the book is well written and easy to read. All around a worthwhile experience!
