...with nothing to show for it, except a dream of winning the Boston Marathon. Anyone who has struggled with accepting the responsibility of adulthood -- marriage, children, a "real" job -- will appreciate Myle's desire to escape by running everywhere around Cambridge and Boston, with an obsession that borders on madness. I really enjoyed the way this book blended hilarious situations like Myles "sleep-running" through the subways at night with the dangerous and dark ways his obsession jeopardizes his marriage, friendships, even his own physical and mental health. I highly recommend the book!

I have the set of books, that for me, started with "Lord, I keep running back to you" book. I then went out and immediately bought another complete set of books to send to my sister in Pennsylvania. I am now in search of another set of books to send to an e-mail friend of mine in Canada who has, what the doctors are saying, uncurable cancer. These are precious books that say so very much of what we all think deep down inside. If you have a chance to obtain any of these books -- it would be a blessing to you to do so

We really enjoyed this story, because it is such a good example of how you must work to accomplish your goals. Since George procrastinated and did not prepare for his big race the outcome was not what he would have wished. The pictures are charming, and George is so typical of all of us. We are buying this book, so that our children, (as well as the adults) can be reminded from time to time to do the work today and not tomorrow.

This tiny, pop-up book depicts how love is not as perfect or as glamorous as maybe we'd like it to be. Using just a few words and lots of whimsical, three-dimensional artwork, Love Stinks parodies love's many challenges. A great little girlfriend gift.

Gems from two who know
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-24
Les and Leslie Parrott are two Ph.D's (clinical psychology and family therapy, respectively) and they are also married. They talk with honesty and humor about their own and others' marriage experiences--the beginning thrills, the let-down, the not-really-listening phases, the attitudes that develop over time, and many other themes familiar to newly married and seasoned married couples. Quotes from the Bible and from Christian and secular writers highlight the beginnings and endings of most of the topic sections (usually a reading of about 3-4 pages per topic).

One favorite quote is from George Saantayana "When men and women agree, it is only in their conclusions; their reasons are always different." The title of the reading by the Parrott's is "Talk By Numbers" and discusses how in deciding what to do, what to watch, what is important or not to the individuals, a rating scale may be applied. Asking your mate: "HOW MUCH do you want to do...?" And also asking yourself the same question. Then, telling your mate (or casting a written ballot)a number between 0 and 10 indicating your desire to do the activity suggested or watch that certain show (10 being "Definately want to do it", 5 being "Neutral" and zero being "Definately do not want to do under any circumstances". My husband and I have found this to be a useful technique in making decisions about where to eat, what movies to watch, and for larger issues such as whether to spend time and money on remodeling projects or on holiday relative get-together decisions.
This is just one example of the quotations, marital situation/issue examples and discussion and practical, non-threatening, non-blaming ideas for improvement that abound in this little volume(136 pages in the Hallmark gift edition we own).

Our regular Sunday prayer time as a couple involves us at the totally cleared kitchen table (an UNusual occurence at our house!)with various devotionals and prayer books spread out. We follow our order of service and select readings from a book or two that strikes a chord with us. We have discussion, thanksgiving, discussion of concerns, prayers, and end with the Lord's Prayer. This book is one of our favorites and we often open the book to a topic that seems to fit especially well (because God feels especially near when we are at the table during our weekly Prayer Time). The Parrott's book has helped our marriage because it has opened the forum to learn from their suggestions and discuss many of the situations/issues that are common to the process, work, and joy that is happy marriage! A highly recommended book for your own marriage or as a gift to another married couple who may be receptive.

From handwritten notebooks and journals belonging to her great-grandmother, a Victorian white witch, Nahmad has gathered a unique collection of romantic spells - all of them authentic and some extremely ancient. Published here for the first time in their original form. Heavy on Celtic lore. Each spell or group of spells is accompanied by beautiful color illustrtions.

Magic: The Gathering -- Official Encyclopedia, Volume 6: The Complete Card Guide

They're learning!

Volume 6 covers Invasion, Planeshift, Seventh Edition, and Apocalypse. As usual, this volume only deals with expansions released since the previous volume of the encyclopedia. If you've *never* collected previous volumes, you might want to look into _The Complete Encyclopedia of Magic: The Gathering_ instead (which is no longer complete, what with the expansions released after the summer of 2001).

Before launching into the expansion chapters, the usual introductory material includes 'how to use this guide' and a Collector's History - a few paragraphs of introduction plus the usual Magic timeline, including the 'for beginners' decks (e.g. Portal), the basic sets, and the expansions. The introduction to the Collector's History gives the roll call and price list for the Power Nine - the most notorious and expensive cards of them all: Black Lotus, the 5 original Mox cards, Time Walk, Timetwister, and Ancestral Recall.

Each set of cards covered in Volume 6, as usual, is provided with an introduction, the style of which has been updated to make it more useful. Each introduction begins with 'At a Glance': Release Date, Size (number of cards), Featured Mechanics, and The One-Sentence Story. For example, Featured Mechanics for Invasion lists 8 features: multicolored spells, kickers, Dragon Legends, dual lands, Kavu, and 'divvy' cards. After 'At a Glance', each introduction continues with the kind of material provided in previous volumes, still broken into segments but now given a framework and consistency by conforming to At a Glance. The framework begins with the story segment (a few paragraphs fleshing out the one-sentence version), the development segment (design history), individual segments for each of the entries in the Featured Mechanics list, concluding with Standout Cards. All the segments are interspersed with images of the relevant cards. After the Standout Cards discussion, of course, we come to the main body of the chapter for a given set: the cards.

The individual cards for each set are listed in alphabetical order; they're shown at about 3/4 actual size. The versions of Magic that included those cards (at the time of printing) are specified, as well as any errata. The card lists' images are enough to hold the attention of even a casual collector, since the flavor text is legible and the artwork is printed well.

The introduction for the 7th edition chapter adds a new item: a table listing Cards Removed from the Basic Set (compared with 6th edition): 31 each for white and blue, 35 for black, 26 for red, 24 for green, 24 artifacts, and 6 lands. (On the bright side, Serra Angel has been brought back - I thought it was gone for good.)

After covering the individual sets, the book gives an overview of 2000 World Championship decks, this time including photographs of the World Champion and the other 3 quarterfinalists. The book concludes with a "Deckbuilders Indexes" section, as in the earlier volumes of the Magic encyclopedia.

Awesome Stocking Stuffer
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-02
I've got to say, this thing is cool. It'd make a great stocking stuffer for almost any age, from a 7-year old to a 25-year old (like me). I expected to find a junk toy, but then was so fascinated by the way that the magnets interacted --- before I knew it I had been playing with it for 30 minutes. It's tiny, just about two inches by an inch, but surprisingly curious to play around with. I like mine so much I bought two for my brothers :-)
