Running Books

So far, the Naxos Life and Works series has given us boxed sets of CDs with the lives and works of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi. They have all been written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann with the assistance of actors such as David Timson. To this impressive series we can now add "Joseph Haydn" (8.558091-94) on four CDs with a running time of 4 1/2 hours.

The running theme throughout this audiobiography is Haydn's marvelous sense of humor. This trait can be spotted from his music alone, but it is good to hear all the wonderful anecdotes concerning it that fill this recording. Musicians will be impressed by Haydn's loyalty to his players and the remarkable tact he showed in swaying his "serene highness" bosses to his way of thinking.

The recorded text is supported by many musical examples drawn from the deep pool of Naxos recordings. As with other entries in these series, I feel that some of them are a bit too long; but after all, the title of the series is Life and WORKS. David Timson is the voice of Haydn, and he is supported by actors Sam Dastor, Nigel Anthony, Steve Hodson, Roger May, and Frances Jeater.

As always with these Naxos sets, the booklet alone is worth the price you pay for the whole product. Its 146 pages include eight sections: Track lists, cast, historical background, Haydn in his time, his major works and their significance, a graded reading plan, recommended reading, personalities, a calendar of Haydn's life, a glossary, and advice on how to use the CD-ROM feature of these discs.

Highly recommended, as is the entire series.

This book is great. it really shows you the ins and outs of Arson Investigations. It keeps you entertained and makes you feel like you are their going through the cases. One interesting part about this book is that, while some books keep you on one case, this one has many different cases that are each about a chapter, and you really get to see the history and different personalitys of the Fire Marshals. If you are interested in a new kind of detective story or you are considering going into Firefighting or becoming an Arson investigator this book really helps explain what it takes, and at the same time, entertains the reader. One of the best stories is, An F.M. goes into a building and gets in a fight with a suspect, having to finally injure him by shooting him. One of the cops comes up to him and says, you damn FM, you need a real gun. So the FM goes out and buys a Magnium, and he said suspects never put up a fight again.

but all in all, this book was great, you learn about fire and the men that fight them and the stories that are told. i just wish the book had been longer, because although it was great, i wanted to keep reading, i didnt want it to end.

Wow, from the hand-written forward by Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam to the way they talk to the Journal to some of the hysterical things that happen to this band, this is a very creative, original work of art!!!

I am surprised the Journal has not sued the Hermans for defamation of character!!!

Buy this book for anyone who plays a musical instrument, and they will love you for it...

There is boy who's mom has a drinking problem and takes the power of it out on him. Through the book his mom goes to work at regular time and mood but then comes home at a later time and she is in a worse mood. But through her actions she notices what she was doing and apologizes but then does it again. Pretty soon it interferes with school activities and then he ignores God.

I thought it was an excellent book! Even though the family wasnt a real family I knew, I still felt bad. I am really greatful for my parents because they really care about me.

I've coached little league for many years with great success but the game on the bigger diamond (13 yr olds and above) is much more complicated. This book is outstanding in that it is packed with practical information for coaches. I especially appreciate the fact that the author is able to substantiate his advice with probability and statistics.

Nice. It has seperated each component of middle distance running (power, speed, speed endurance, endurance ect.)and given ways to work on each. Some good guidlines.

Patients and their families who are currently going through the involved process of liver transplant--and those who may eventually be headed in that direction--need to read this.

"The Holy Land: 5,000 Years..." One in a series of excellent interactive "treasure chests" published by Running Press. A delightful diversion for an elementary-achool age child or young adult-- a wonderful resource for the homeschooler or classroom teacher. The Holy Land chest includes a paper model of the Temple of Jerusalem to construct; rubber stamps of ancient Hebrew letters; replicas of ancient coins; map; stickers; paper figures and more. It is out of print and somewhat hard to find, but pops up here and other sites fairly often. This treasure chest will engage children whatever their learning style-- visual, tactile, hands on-etc. Useful for a wide range of ages! (Except for the very small, who may eat the pieces, flush them down the potty, put in the nose, etc) My only regret: "The Holy Land" is currently out of print. Perhaps Running Press will re-release it at some point. Whether you are religious, agnostic or just wondering 'why it's called the Holy Land'-- you will find this kit great Fun! This book gives alot to more than the price. It is like a business bible . It exaplians from basic to the most complicated issue that you will find when you run your business. Each chapter is well organized. Some complex issues are well explained and give pro & con. You can use it when you first start your business, then after you can still use it when you need. It is a GREAT BOOK...to help you to run the business. Worth to have.
