Running Books

If you reading this page, you must know by now that Naxos has been issuing a series called Life and Works, audiobiographies of famous composers. Never shy of surprises, Naxos now gives us what I hope is the start of a new series, A Life in Words and Music. "Enrico Caruso" is now available on a 4-CD boxed set (8.558131-34) with a text and narration by British actor David Timson (the voice of the composers in the other series) and 30 original Caruso recordings to support and illuminate the text.

Caruso was a fascinating personality, prone to human weaknesses but seldom losing his sense of humor. Timson gives us all the pertinent facts about his incredible rise to stardom, his domestic problems, the Monkey House scandal, even the Black Hand's threats on his life, his continuing battle with throat problems. Unlike some other opera stars, he is a thoroughly lovable character and I found myself really getting to like and admire him as the story of his life spun out on these wonderful CDs.

By the way, each of the 30 recordings, dating from 1902 to 1920 (how sad he missed the age of electric recordings,) is played complete; so having this set can even be the start of a collection of all his recordings, all of which are available in 12 volumes in the Naxos Historical series.

The tracking list in the booklet can send you to any point in Caruso's career or to any one of the 30 recordings. All in all, a very worthwhile package from Naxos.

Victorian Tea Parties are so in right now, and it's really hard to get good information on them. Every page of this book is excellent. I bought it from just the picture on the cover, and when I went into the book, every page is just as good as the cover. It is the best Tea Book I have, and I have 32.

Not only does it give you excellent recipes , it also has pictures that are breath taking. The Menu's are wonderful, where most I find are too way-out for me.

Presentation for my table is very important to me when I am having a party, and this book is wonderful for helping with presentation. You will have rave reviews with using the information found in this book.

When I got my Entertaining In The Victorian Style I loved it, so I bought two more for friends.

Marilyn Hansen has done a wonderful job on this book,I wish she would do another on Entertaining.

I can't say enough about this book; it's one that when it's picked up, it's so hard to put it down.

Erica and I grew up together. Well, grew up as far as 15 years old when she was brutally murdered by 2 guys that decided to play Russian Roulette with her. This book tells her story. It was sent to me by the publisher's when it was printed with a lovely letter of condolences. I hope that this book always keeps her spirit alive and saves the lives of others who have run away or are thinking of running away.

For a long time there were two kinds of vampire books. The angst-ridden romantic kind where the sex was either sublimated or took place "off-camera," and the bloody, gory horrific kind, where if there was any sex it was there to shock or horrify the reader. In the mid-1990s I began editing a series of erotic vampire anthologies where I tried to actually get at what we erotic about the vampire. I gave my authors a few rules, one of which was "no murder." Okay, maybe a tad of murder here and there--these aRE vampires after all--but not the murder of a sex partner, and not as the point of the story. "Erotica Vampirica" was the second volume of the erotic vampire series (preceded by Blood Kiss, and followed by Cherished Blood, and A Taste of Midnight). The book sold out fairly quickly and the small press that had done it did not have the dough to put it back in print, so now Blue Moon Books has done it. This is the original book pages replicated between a new (if dull) cover. If you like this book, you will also like "BLood Surrender," which is not a reprint, but is all new stories. And a reprint of "A Taste of Midnight" with several new stories added to it will also be out from Blue Moon Books in 2006.

This is one of the smallest books you will ever own. It is completely adorable and has quotes about flowers. The cover has yellow roses on the front and the words are a pink foil. The pictures are all of gorgeous roses.

This is a tiny celebration of our love affair with flowers. This is a collectable book or one you could give to a gardening friend.

This book really opened my eyes to the damage that over training can produce on the body. Also learned lots about rest, recovery, and using speed work. I, like a lot of other runners, always heard that long slow runs are great for burning fat and getting in great shape- WRONG! The only thing the long slow run did for me was make my legs sore and I actually started gaining fat. Read this book to find out more about this. The book is written from a South African Point of view, however the concepts and principles are universal and apply to all runners across the world. I learned so much from this book. I'm a climber of some of the world's biggest mountains and I've always used running as a base training method. This is why I never took running seriously, but as soon as I started competing in some of the tougher mountain runs, I realized that I was not too far from being an elite runner. I was on the path to injury as I upped the mileage and elevation gain with little rest. I also had no idea about how to eat for distance running. This book has a great section on sports nutrition. The information in this book may have saved me from getting injured from over-training and eating the wrong proportions of Carbos to Protein to Fat. A also ate at the wrong times. This book covers everything about distance running that you'll need to know- very complete.

Wow!! what do I say. Well-- if you want to exercise but have found that you aren't consistent or are just so so about exercising--just read this book. It offers many reasons why exercising (cardiovascular) activity particularly is so very important and really helps those suffering with depression. It takes exercising goals from simply a toning/body image mentality to very real, down to earth, important reasons to keep in shape and do those cardio activities. It is an excellent motivator and once read you will really understand why exercise is so important to mental health.

A simple an informative book enjoyed by my nephews and their friends - go see for yourself!

If you are a runner, adventure racer, ultrarunner, or interested in extreme events, Extreme Running is for you. I love this book. Extreme Running features sections on races on the seven continents. Twenty-four events are profiled in the chapters. Each event is shown with plenty of photos, race information, distance, time of year, field size, ascent and decent data, contact and Web information, and maps or an altitude profile. As you read the chapters, you get a feel for the event and its difficulty. The Marathon des Sables is featured in 16 pages, Badwater in 10, while others are covered in several pages. The photos are fantastic - making you feel in the race. While not inclusive of all extreme events on the seven continents, the book does a great job of showing you popular events and enough information to help you decide if you could do any one of them. This is a book that some might call a "coffee table" book - it is that beautiful. It appeals to me because I love the draw and challenge of these extreme events. As the author of Fixing Your Feet, I patch the feet of these athletes, and have been to several of them and can attest to the descriptions as accurate.

This is the greatest book gives you an upclose look at reptiles with out haveing to hold them. Every mom's dream book, my childern and I love it.
