Peter Costello's Conan Doyle: Detective is one of the most fascinating true crime books published in the 21st Century. Like
his fictional creation, Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a detective.
However, Doyle was strictly an amateur and many of his cases, such as that of Jack the Ripper, were approached as an armchair detective who based his theories more from newspaper accounts and gossip rather than from first hand investigation.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may have been a disappointment as a would be detective, but this absorbing, well written book is anything but a disappointment.
Most recommended.

A testimony to the principles of this text

Upon graduation from Georgia Tech's building construction program in 1982, I went to work for Nick Ganaway. One of the many
reasons I selected his company was his obvious knowledge of business. Even more, I appreciated the motivation he placed in
us (and himself) to always become better as contractors and as businessmen. We met frequently to "log in" new discoveries,
efficiencies, risks, and methods of profitability that he had wisely accumulated for us. As I "ventured out" into the world
and developed my own business with very little experience, I quickly noticed that although I was a "great" project manager
that running a construction company was an entirely different issue. For example, do you understand the unique requirements
of the construction firm owner? Terms in the project owner's construction agreement that can unfairly shift major risk onto
your plate and what to do about them? How to ensure that you get paid for change orders? What to do when hard times suddenly
strike (and they will)? After 25 years of experience in operating a commercial construction company, Mr. Ganaway explains
chapter-by-chapter these and every other risk area you must manage if you are going to survive in construction. I know these
explanations well as they ring in my mind from discussions with Mr. Ganaway concerning my very first projects and through
calling for help with running my own construction business. You will feel like you're having these same discussions with him
as you read this book. Every contractor, project manager, and construction student should read it. Today I use this very text
to teach our students at Georgia Tech's building construction program how to run a business, as well as consulting in the
same area. His principles work!
An added bonus to this text is the final chapter, where Mr. Ganaway makes the case for specializing in chain store construction. To "outsiders" who have not reviewed this market segment, I think you will be surprised at the benefits. If you are not already specializing in a niche market, this chapter is sure to start you thinking about it.

Is that a weird suggestion? NO! Reading about food while hospitalized somehow 'works' for me. Your mouth will water at these
smashing photos that ZOOM IN on each & every morsel, and you'll feel your determination to be healed increase with every
imagined bite.
The cookies pictured are bigger-than-life. You can easily tell the pistachios from the pecans, the walnuts from macadamias. And you will be challenged to choose a favorite. Mine is the very last: "Tangy Lemon Bars." The author writes "This recipe does not freeze well." I consider that the sweetest of messages: an invitation to treat yourself often!
I adore biscotti, and the Lemon Poppyseed cookies are another favorite. Reviewer mcHAIKU recommends Linda Collister's delectable recipes with unbridled enthusiasm.

Mastbaum, Blair and Will Fabro, editors." Cool Thing: The Best New Gay Fiction from Young American Writers", Running Press,
2008.
18 New Stories
Amos Lassen
Today gay young people have it so much easier that I did. They can, in most cases, come out without the fear and pain that many of us felt and they are certainly more open that my generation was. This collection of short stories, wonderfully edited by Bair Mastbaum and Will Fabro is full of the excitement of youth and the stories deal with all of the aspects of GLBT life. These are the voices of the young and they bring a new dimension to gay literature--one we have not had much of. They look at sexuality in a different way, it is not a struggle for them and their coming out stories are wild, happy and enthusiastic and not important as they once were.
The stories are like the colors of the rainbow--diverse and beautiful. I do not have much is common with the writers in this anthology as they did not face the same challenges and obstacles as I did but that does not mean that these stories do not speak to me. The writers here are also searchers and they sometimes find and sometimes don't. And as they search, they also flee from certain issues. What they do more than anything else is give us a picture of what it means to be young and gay today. They are also willing to write down their experiences and share them with us.
The stories deal with drug abuse, looking for sex, imagining sex with Brad Pitt, of an eco-terrorist action plot, of a dead boyfriend, and other topics. They represent youth in all of its aspect and they are great reading.

The ERWA puts out some of the best erotica on the web, so this book was a long time coming. The story selections are great
(and actually sexy, unlike a lot of so-called "erotica" collections). Highly recommended.
